Chapter 2: Submitting the Resume
Su Shixiao smiled, “It’s nothing important.”
Yan Jiaxin led Su Shibei to sit on the sofa, listening to her younger son excitedly recount interesting stories that happened at school.
Su Ningge placed his suit jacket on the sofa, lay down, and rubbed his temples, listening along to the school stories and occasionally chiming in with a few words.
When it was time for dinner, his eldest brother also returned from the company. Seeing that both of his younger brothers were home at the dining table, a smile flashed in his eyes, “Xiao Bei, Xiao Xiao, you’re back.”
The young man was tall and handsome, and his every gesture revealed maturity and stability, giving him a gentle and refined air.
“Brother, hurry and sit down, we were waiting for you,” Su Shibei was delighted to see his brother return. “Brother, sit down quickly, I’m starving.”
“Mmm, I’ll wash my hands and be right over.” Su Shizhi affectionately stroked his hair. “Mom, Dad, you two start eating, don’t wait for me.”
“Mmm, hurry and wash your hands. Let’s have a meal all together as a family,” Yan Jiaxin said with a beaming smile.
When the family of seven was mostly done eating, Su Shizhi remembered that Su Shixiao would be a senior next semester and asked, “Xiao Xiao, you’ll be a senior next semester. For your internship, should I arrange it for you? Come intern at our family company, how about that?”
Su Shixiao paused, his hand holding the chopsticks stopped. He hadn’t expected his brother to remember this.
“Brother, no need. I don’t want to work at our family’s company. I’ll find one myself.”
Yan Jiaxin was also surprised that Xiao Xiao was so grown up. Xiao Xiao had always been distant, and her moments of interacting with him were growing fewer, causing her a moment of abstraction. “Xiao Xiao, why don’t you want to work at your own company? Your brother can arrange a position you like so you can gain some experience.”
Su Shixiao smiled, “No thanks, Mom, I have my own plans.”
Su Shizhi frowned slightly, unexpected that his second brother would refuse, but he didn’t press. He smiled gently, “Alright, let me know if anything comes up.”
“Okay.”
Su Ningge was also slightly distracted. They had always been less close to this son. If his eldest son hadn’t mentioned it, he wouldn’t have known that his second son was already going to be a senior. He said sternly, “Remember to look for us if you need anything.”
His grandparents also agreed, “That’s right, Xiao Xiao. If you ever feel wronged outside, just come home.”
Su Shibei waved his arm, “Second Brother, if anyone bullies you, tell me, and I’ll help you get revenge.”
“Mmm.” Su Shixiao felt a slight pang of sadness in his heart. He didn’t know how long it had been since he felt this kind of care from his family.
He had always lingered on the edge of this family, feeling like he was in a corner. He actually envied Su Shibei all along, and he had been jealous too. Everyone in the family pampered him, loved him, and sided with him.
Sometimes he wondered if he had been the younger brother, would their attention have constantly rested on him?
But on second thought, it seemed impossible. He couldn’t be as lively and outgoing as Su Shibei, or as good at pleasing his parents and the others.
“Brother, how about the script I asked you to submit a few days ago?” Su Shibei remembered a script he really liked. He had successfully auditioned for the third male lead a few days ago, a character he loved, but the production team was short on money, so he asked his brother to invest in the team.
Su Shizhi looked at him, his eyes softening, “We’re discussing it now. It should be finalized in a few days once the contract is signed.”
“Thank you, Brother, you’re the best.”
Su Shibei’s smile was innocent and adorable, warming the hearts of the Su family members.
“Mmm. You’re going to join the crew next week, so be good, act well, and no messing around,” his tone was stern yet indulgent.
Su Shibei glanced away, “It’s fine as long as no one provokes me. If someone does make me angry, then I can’t promise.”
“Hahaha.”
His grandparents laughed, amused by his words.
“Of course. If someone bullies you, fight back. We’re your strong backup.”
Su Shibei was deeply moved by his brother’s words, “Brother, you’re so good. I love you the most.”
Su Shixiao quietly watched their joyful chatter, feeling like there was an invisible barrier between them that he could never break through.
After dinner, Su Shixiao went back to his room to take a shower. He settled down with his laptop to write his resume. After finishing it in an hour, he planned to submit it on a recruitment app.
He logged into the recruitment software and saw that three or four companies required portfolios of his design work. As he browsed, he thought of a large company—Xingzhou Technology Co., Ltd.
The hand that was about to close the webpage paused. Finally, he entered the company’s website and saw they were hiring intern game concept artists, which also required a design piece of a game character.
He stayed up late drawing a game character, using tree vines and green as elements to portray a seventeen-year-old boy.
Then, he sent his resume and artwork to Xingzhou Technology without hesitation.
After completing this, he closed his laptop and climbed into bed to sleep.
He slept until noon the next day. When he went downstairs, he saw his brother and grandparents eating lunch.
“Second Brother, you’re finally up.” Su Shibei swallowed the food in his mouth. “Come quickly and eat lunch.”
Su Shixiao smiled faintly, “Mmm, I’m coming.”
“Xiao Bei, eat more, look how thin you are.”
Grandma Su piled Su Shibei’s plate with all his favorite dishes.
She also put some food on Su Shixiao’s plate, but none of it was what he liked, especially scrambled eggs with tomatoes. He hated the smell of tomatoes.
“Thank you, Grandma, I can serve myself.”
Grandpa Su: “Xiao Bei, Grandpa has already trimmed your Natal Plum tree. Go outside after lunch and see if you like it.”
“Mmm, mmm, I’ll like anything Grandpa trims.” Su Shibei’s eyes immediately brightened. “Thank you, Grandpa. I need to eat quickly so I can run out and see it.”
Su Shibei gobbled up his lunch and ran off to see the Natal Plum tree.
Only Su Shixiao and his grandparents were left at the dining table, and it suddenly became quiet.
“Xiao Xiao, eat more.” Grandma Su put more food on his plate. “I thought you brothers liked scrambled eggs with tomatoes.”
“Thank you, Grandma.” Su Shixiao pursed his lips, feeling a little bitter, “But I don’t really like scrambled eggs with tomatoes.”
The one who likes scrambled eggs with tomatoes is Xiao Bei.
“Ah, I thought both you brothers liked it.” Grandma put another dish on his plate. “If you don’t like it, don’t eat it. Try this fish.”
Su Shixiao: “Okay. Grandma, please eat, I can serve myself.”
Silence fell over the dining table again. His grandparents never quite knew how to interact with this quiet and distant grandson, nor did they know how he developed this personality, as he was quite lively and cute when he was little.
Su Shibei, who ran out to see the Natal Plum tree, was overjoyed when he saw that his tree was trimmed the most exquisitely. Then his phone rang.
“Hello, He Ge.”
A low, lazy voice came from the other end of the phone, “Xiao Bei, I heard from your brother that your summer vacation has started. We’re going hiking now, do you want to join us?”
“Yes! He Ge, wait for me, I’m coming to find you now,” Su Shibei said happily.
The next day, a recruiter from Xingzhou Technology called him to say his resume had passed the screening and to come in for an interview at ten o’clock tomorrow morning.
He felt relieved after the screening passed. That night, he went to bed early, played on his phone for a bit, and then fell asleep.
