Chapter 27 My Favorite Food is Tomato Beef Brisket
Nan Yanzhou felt much more sober after showering. He changed and left the room to find Su Shixiao sitting quietly on the sofa, playing with his phone.
He walked over and snatched the phone from his hand, then leaned over to look at him with a smile on his face. Su Shixiao looked at him, his hands unconsciously gripping the edge of the sofa. He asked, “What are you doing?”
Nan Yanzhou’s tone was drawn out and slow, “Are you looking for your brother again?”
He only finished half of his sentence, and Su Shixiao looked at him, bewildered. “What?”
Nan Yanzhou narrowed his eyes slightly. “I said you came here to see me, so you’re asking about your brother again?”
Su Shixiao tapped the edge of the sofa again, feeling a little uncomfortable with Nan Yanzhou’s fixed gaze. He calmly looked away, “Yeah.”
Nan Yanzhou got the answer, handed him his phone, and sat down next to him. “Then your brother will know you work at my company, won’t he?”
Su Shixiao put his phone away and saw Nan Yanzhou’s expression. He laid back on the sofa, glancing at him for a few more seconds. “I knew it last time.”
Nan Yanzhou was overcome by a feeling. He looked at him for a moment and said seriously, “Don’t do anything you don’t want to do in the future. For example, if you don’t want your family to know you work for my company, don’t do it.”
“Oh.” Su Shixiao’s breath trembled slightly. It was the first time someone cared so much about his opinion. He smiled at Nan Yanzhou’s serious expression. “I didn’t intend to hide the fact that I work for your company. I just didn’t tell them until they asked. It wasn’t a secret in the first place.”
“Yeah,” Nan Yanzhou asked again, “Why didn’t you just call me?”
Su Shixiao: “Your phone is turned off. I can’t get through.”
Nan Yanzhou then picked up the phone he had just casually shoved in his pocket and checked it. It was truly dead.
He stood up, grabbed the charging cable, and went out with Su Shixiao.
Su Shixiao asked Nan Yanzhou to wait in the car while he went to a nearby breakfast shop to buy some buns and a bottle of milk.
As soon as he got in the car, he tossed the buns and milk to Nan Yanzhou, “It’ll fill your stomach.”
Nan Yanzhou hadn’t expected him to buy breakfast, and couldn’t help but smile. “Thank you, our Xiaoxiao is so thoughtful. I really envy Shizhi for having a brother like you.”
Su Shixiao frowned at him. He certainly wouldn’t take such good care of his brother.
That evening, at a small party, Nan Yanzhou and Su Shizhi ran into each other. Su Shizhi glared at him unhappily. “You and Xiaoxiao get along well?”
Nan Yanzhou found him baffled. “Fine, what’s wrong?”
Su Shizhi took a sip of his red wine and glared at him again. Nan Yanzhou, baffled by the glares, said impatiently, “Stop glaring. If you have something to say, just say it. I remember I didn’t provoke you.”
“Xiaoxiao cares about you more than me. You actually got him to call me. I usually called him before,” Su Shixiao said sourly.
Nan Yanzhou was speechless for a moment, then said, “You’re jealous of this? I’m his boss, so he’s definitely concerned. Besides…” I’ve also helped him with a lot of things.
Su Shizhi pressed, “And what?”
Nan Yanzhou: “…It’s nothing.”
Su Shizhi sighed, “Xiaoxiao once drew a picture for me when we were little, but he hasn’t done anything for me since junior high.”
Nan Yanzhou rolled his eyes at him curiously. “…Are you still thinking about that picture?”
“He never drew one for me even after I grew up.”
“…He only gave it to me because I asked him for it.”
“He didn’t even draw for me even when I asked him.”
“…Would you like to reflect on yourself?”
“Hmm?”
Before they could finish their conversation, they were stopped to discuss their partnership.
“Brother, you’re back! We’re just about to have dinner. Come on.” Su Shibei’s eyes lit up at the sight of him, and she smiled sweetly.
“Well, I’ll go wash my hands first.” Su Shixiao put down his schoolbag and went into the kitchen to wash his hands.
As soon as he reached the door, he saw his mother cooking, Xiaobei’s favorite, scrambled eggs with tomatoes. He whispered, “Mom.”
“Xiaoxiao, you’re back,” Yan Jiaxin smiled upon seeing him. “I made you and Xiaobei’s favorite, scrambled eggs with tomatoes. Dinner’s ready.”
Su Shixiao paused while washing the dishes. He looked at his mother, her eyes darkening for a second. “My favorite isn’t scrambled eggs with tomatoes, but beef brisket with tomatoes.”
Yan Jiaxin was surprised and a little bewildered. “I… Xiaoxiao, Mom made a mistake. I’ll make it for you next time.”
Su Shixiao washed his hands and turned off the faucet. He uttered a faint “Hmm.” A sudden awkwardness filled the air, and he left the kitchen without lingering.
In less than two minutes, Yan Jiaxin had also finished scrambled eggs with tomatoes. Finally, it was time to eat. Su Shibei contentedly took his first bite of his mother’s tomato scrambled eggs, his face beaming with joy as he said, “Mom, your tomato scrambled eggs are truly the best.”
“If it’s delicious, eat more.” Yan Jiaxin looked at her youngest son lovingly, helping him with the tomato scrambled eggs and other dishes he liked.
Grandma, too, was helping him with food, nagging, “Xiaobei, eat more! You’ve lost so much weight! It makes me sad.”
“Yeah, eat more! Why would you lose weight when you’re this thin?” Grandpa said, his face etched with heartache.
Seeing his family so worried about him, Su Shibei felt a warm glow. “Well, I have no choice but to fit the role. Once filming wraps, I’ll eat like crazy.”
Su Ningge was very disapproving of him taking on the role, mainly because he’d have to lose over 90 pounds. Is it really reasonable for a boy over 5’8″ to lose over 90 pounds? “Xiaobei, why don’t you give up this role and do something else? Daddy’s got you covered with any script you like.”
Grandpa disagreed, “That’s right. Don’t harm yourself.”
Su Shibei smiled warmly. “Okay, I know you’re worried about me. This is a role I really love, and I want to portray it. I’ll take care of my health, and I don’t want to worry you.”
Su Ningge stopped trying to persuade him, but lovingly helped him pick up his favorite dishes. The family was happy and harmonious, but Su Shixiao felt a pang of pain because of the kitchen incident and the current situation. He was so used to it, why was it still so painful?
Art Department
“You can leave work early at 5 PM today. Our department is having a party.” Wang Fangjuan was excited when she saw the message from President Jin in the group chat. “President Nan will be there too, and he’s treating.”
Xiaoxi asked happily, “Really?”
“Another message in the group chat. Go check it out,” said a male colleague, Liu Hanjia.
Su Shixiao opened the group chat and saw President Jin’s message, along with the hotel address.
The office instantly became lively, with everyone discussing the party and the fact that President Nan was actually attending.
“I didn’t expect President Nan to come to the party with me. He’s never been to any of our parties.”
“Yeah, that’s what I meant.”
“Why is President Nan coming this time?”
One of the boys looked at Su Shixiao and whispered to the person next to him, “I guess it’s because of him?”
“Huh? Why?”
“I think President Nan and him have known each other for a long time.”
