Chapter 30: Going Out
Su Shixiao finished showering and lay in bed, playing with his phone. He felt a little sleepy when he suddenly received a message from Nan Yanzhou, instantly waking him up. He leisurely clicked on it.
Nan Yanzhou: Are you going to the camping spot with your brother and the others tomorrow, or with me?
Nan Yanzhou asked this because he had a feeling Su Shixiao’s interactions with his family were a little strange, and he probably didn’t want to go with Su Shizhi and Su Shibei.
Su Shixiao immediately sent a voice message, “I didn’t tell my brother and Xiaobei that I was going camping too.”
Because he had never considered going with them, he could have just driven himself.
His answer was exactly what Nan Yanzhou expected. Without thinking, he sent a voice message, “Okay, sure. I’ll pick you up tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock.”
Yuanxiao: Okay.
Yuanxiao: Thank you.
The next day, the Su family gathered for breakfast. Yan Jiaxin poured Su Shibei a glass of milk and placed it in front of him. As she put the glass down, she noticed Su Shixiao pause and asked, “Xiaoxiao, do you want some milk? If you do, Mom will pour it for you.”
Su Shixiao looked at her, somewhat surprised and bewildered. “Yes, sure, thank you.”
His mother had actually noticed him this time and asked if he wanted some milk.
“You’re welcome. We’re family,” Yan Jiaxin smiled, placing the poured milk in front of him.
“Xiaobei, are you and your older brother going out to play later?” Grandma Su knew an 80% chance that Su Shibei and Su Shizhi were going out to play together after seeing them having breakfast together on Saturday.
Why didn’t she mention his younger brother? It was because Xiaobei had always loved playing with his older brother. Xiaoxiao mostly played by herself at home, while Xiaobei had always been his brother’s friend, hanging around and getting along well with Shizhi’s friends.
Su Shibei: “Yes, we’ll go camping after breakfast.”
“You’re so grown up, yet you’re still clinging to your brother,” Yan Jiaxin teased him with a smile. “Your second brother is so well-behaved, he’s always been sensible. Unlike you, you’ve always been crying and begging to play with your brother.”
“I just love playing with my brother and the others.” He turned around, hugged Su Shizhi’s arm, and said coquettishly, “Brother, I just love following you.”
Su Shizhi caressed his head lovingly and said with a smile, “Well, follow me if you want. I didn’t say you can’t.”
“See, my brother loves it when I follow him.” Su Shibei, upon hearing his brother’s response, lit up with pride. If he had a tail, it would surely be wagging with joy.
Yan Jiaxin smiled fondly at him, “Yes, your brother loves you the most.”
Su Shibei raised his head proudly, “Of course.”
Su Ningge saw Su Shixiao quietly eating breakfast and asked, “Xiaoxiao, how about you? Are you staying home or going out with your friends?”
Everyone’s eyes were instantly on him, and he clenched his chopsticks nervously. “Out.”
Su Shibei was happy to see his brother finally out with his friends, his eyes gleaming with joy. “Brother, where are you going?”
Su Shixiao: “The Yuanshan Scenic Area in City B.”
“Huh, you’re going to the same place we’re going.” Su Shibei looked at him brightly. “Second brother, where are you going?” “Brother, let’s go together in Big Brother’s car. There’s lots of delicious food in there, and I can give you half of my favorite snacks.”
Su Shizhi also wanted to go out with Xiaoxiao. “Yes, Xiaoxiao, let’s go together. We’re going to the same place.”
“I…” Su Shixiao was torn between going with his brother, but he also wanted to be alone with Nan Yanzhou. After some thought, he finally chose Nan Yanzhou and said, “No, someone will pick me up later.”
Su Shibei pouted reluctantly. He really wanted to go out with his second brother. “Okay.”
After breakfast, his brother and Xiaobei left. Su Shixiao sat in the living room, playing with his phone, waiting for Nan Yanzhou to pick him up.
A dozen minutes later, Su Shixiao left the house and saw Nan Yanzhou’s car waiting for him at the front door.
“Come on in.” After Su Shixiao got in, Nan Yanzhou turned the corner and asked, “Have your brother and younger brother been out yet?”
Su Shixiao was fastening his seatbelt. “Yeah, they just went out a while ago.”
Nan Yanzhou glanced at him. “Did you tell them you were going camping too?”
“No, but I told them we were going to the Yuanshan Scenic Area in City B,” Su Shixiao replied.
“Then why didn’t you tell them you were going with them?” Nan Yanzhou didn’t quite understand, but he joked, “If your brother sees me taking you, he’ll give me another glare.”
“They didn’t ask.”
Besides, he was going there for Nan Yanzhou in the first place, so there wasn’t much to say. They hadn’t told him where they were going.
“Have you always answered your family’s questions? Or said nothing if they didn’t ask?” Nan Yanzhou suddenly felt a little choked up, and couldn’t help but stare at his cold, indifferent face a few more times.
Su Shixiao was silent for a few seconds. He didn’t choose to hide it from Nan Yanzhou and nodded. “Yeah.”
“It’s okay.” Nan Yanzhou noticed he was quite patient with Su Shixiao. While waiting at the red light, he looked up and stroked his hair. “You can tell me anything in the future. If you trust me, you can come to me with any unsolvable problems.”
Su Shixiao’s heartbeat quickened uncontrollably. He was surprised and incredulous, but he nodded. “Okay.”
“Didn’t Brother Nan say they were almost there?” Fang Nanshen complained after waiting for half an hour. “Why haven’t they arrived yet?”
“That’s what I meant.” Su Shibei slumped against Shen Fengjun on the public bench. “I’m so sleepy waiting.”
“I’m sleepy too.” Yan Haojiu, a man with a buzz cut sitting at the other end of the bench, yawned, tears streaming down his face. Not coming anymore. He looked at Su Shizhi leaning against the wall and couldn’t help but ask, “Mr. Su, you’ve been standing for so long, why don’t you sit down for a while?”
Su Shizhi looked up at him curiously. “No, I’ll be fine standing.”
“Please, Mr. Su, sit down for a while.” Yan Haojiu pulled him down. “You’re not tired, I’d be tired for you if I were there.”
They waited a few more minutes before finally seeing Nan Yanzhou. Su Shibei instantly regained his energy. “Brother Nan, you’re finally here. If you hadn’t come, we wouldn’t have waited for you. You’ve made us wait so long.”
As he finished speaking, he saw a figure following behind Nan. Seeing who it was, his eyes widened and he shouted in surprise, “Second Brother?”
Su Shixiao naturally noticed him as well and nodded. Nan Yanzhou saw the incredulous looks in Su Shizhi and Su Shibei’s eyes and couldn’t help but smile. “Sorry, I was stuck in traffic just now.”
