Chapter 33: You look great without those ugly black glasses.
“Second brother, you’re so kind.” Hearing his brother was thinking of him, he instantly felt better.
Su Shixiao: “…Yeah.”
After filling his stomach, Su Shixiao leaned aside to gaze at the stars and listen to their conversation.
“Xiaobei, don’t you have any filmings lately?” Chen Fengjun asked.
Su Shibei was munching on the last of a bunch of chicken wings. He heard someone talking to him, looked up, and replied, “Yes, I’ll be joining the crew in a week.”
Fang Nanshen asked curiously, “What kind of script is it?”
“A fantasy martial arts drama.” Su Shibei thought about the plot. “It seems exciting and fun.”
“Is it the lead or a supporting role?”
“The third male lead, one of the main characters, so I guess I’m a lead.”
Yan Haojiu teased, “Why do you always play supporting roles? How about asking your brother to invest in you and let you play the lead?”
Su Shibei: “You don’t understand. This is my favorite role in this script. I wouldn’t even want the lead role.”
Chen Fengjun glanced at the man who had barely spoken all day. Everyone was sitting quietly, but Su Shixiao couldn’t help but ask, “Xiaoxiao, you don’t mind me calling you that, do you?”
Su Shixiao: “I don’t mind.”
“Are you quiet? I see you say no more than ten sentences all day.”
“Because I don’t know what to say. I’m slow to warm up.”
“We’re very familiar with your brother and your younger brother. No need to be polite with me. Just be casual.”
“Okay.”
It was one in the middle of the night, and Su Shixiao wasn’t asleep yet. The crickets kept chirping. He carefully turned over. It was his first time sleeping in a tent outdoors, and he couldn’t fall asleep. He sat up and glanced at his sleeping brother. He picked up his coat and left the tent, sitting on a chair not far away to play with his phone.
He sat playing with his phone for quite a while, completely unaware of the sleepiness. A gust of wind ruffled his hair, and he looked up at the moon in the sky. It was especially round today.
Nan Yanzhou got up to use the restroom and came back to see a figure sitting on a chair. He saw loneliness in that figure. He walked over and saw it was Su Shixiao. His heart clenched, and he called out, “Su Shixiao, why are you sitting here? Aren’t you sleeping?”
Hearing Nan Yanzhou’s voice, he turned around and smiled softly, “I can’t sleep.”
“Is it because you’re not used to it?” Nan Yanzhou walked over to the chair next to him and sat down.
“Yeah, a little.” Su Shixiao saw him yawn and said, “You go back to sleep. I’ll sit here for a while.”
“I’ll stay with you for a while.” Nan Yanzhou rubbed his eyes.
Su Shixiao asked, “Why are you up?”
He lay back in the chair, his hands wrapped around his head to cushion his gaze, taking in the stars. “I’m getting up to go to the bathroom.”
Su Shixiao: “Oh.”
Nan Yanzhou glanced at him and noticed he wasn’t wearing those ugly black glasses. He couldn’t help but stare a few times. The moonlight and the lamplight made his already fair skin even whiter, almost glowing. Without his glasses, he was still aloof yet incredibly beautiful. His eyes were beautiful without them. His heart skipped a beat when he looked at him.
He heard him say, “Brother Yanzhou, thank you for bringing me here. I’ve got some ideas for my graduation project.”
“Well, as long as it’s useful, you’re welcome,” Nan Yanzhou said.
After a moment, he spoke in a tone that was not formal but tinged with sincerity, “You look good without those ugly black glasses.”
“Huh…?” Su Shixiao was a little confused by his sudden words. When he realized what was happening, he unconsciously touched the corner of his eye and found that he was indeed not wearing glasses. “Yeah.”
The atmosphere suddenly became awkward.
Thinking of his lonely figure just now, Nan Yanzhou suddenly wanted to know, “How do you think your family treats you? Do you feel lonely?”
“Pretty well.” He was silent for a long time when asked the second question, but he didn’t answer. Just when Nan Yanzhou thought he wouldn’t answer, he spoke, “Maybe.”
He lowered his eyes, his tone tinged with an indescribable sadness. This was the first time he had ever shown his feelings to someone. He had unknowingly come to trust Nan Yanzhou.
Nan Yanzhou had also noticed yesterday that he was probably being ignored by his family, that everyone was favoring Su Shibei. After all, Su Shibei was truly pampered by everyone in the Su family, which was why she lived such a carefree and carefree life.
He knew he was feeling sorry for Su Shixiao. He propped himself up and sat down in the chair, caressing his hair with a loving hand. “If you’re ever wronged or in need, come to me. I’ll help.”
“Really?” Su Shixiao asked earnestly, looking him straight in the eye.
“Yes,” Nan Yanzhou nodded. “I’m happy to.”
Su Shixiao: “Why are you so nice to me?”
“Why so many whys? I just want to be nice to you.” Nan Yanzhou looked at Su Shixiao’s beautiful eyes, which were his own reflection. Unable to bear his gaze, he reached out and turned his face away.
Su Shixiao found him a little baffled, but didn’t turn to look at him. “Yes, okay.”
They stayed together for another half hour. Nan Yanzhou finally couldn’t stand it anymore and urged Su Shixiao to go to bed. He watched him enter the tent and then pop his head out again. “Brother Yanzhou, good night.”
He then retreated back into the tent. Nan Yanzhou was touched by his cute behavior and smiled, then went back to sleep in his own tent.
The next morning, Su Shixiao was awakened by the chirping of birds. He was hugged by Su Shibei. He helplessly raised his hand to push him away, but Su Shibei held him tighter. “Xiaobei, Xiaobei, let me go.”
Su Shibei drowsily opened his eyes and saw his second brother without his glasses. He was stunned. He knew his second brother looked handsome under his black frames, but he hadn’t expected him to look so stunning. “Second brother, you look so good.”
Su Shixiao was stunned by his words. After a moment, he smiled helplessly and pinched his face. “You look even better. Let me go.”
“Not at all. You’re the most handsome person in our family.” Su Shibei hugged him tighter. It had been a long time since he’d been hugged by his second brother.
“Yeah.” Su Shixiao leaned back uncomfortably. “Wake up, Xiaobei. Stop hugging me. I’m not used to it.”
“Oh.” Su Shibei let go of him, a little aggrieved.
Su Shixiao breathed a sigh of relief, sat up, picked up his glasses, and put them on. “If you’re sleepy, sleep a little longer. I’ll get up first.”
Su Shibei hugged the blanket, “Okay.”
After Su Shixiao finished washing up, he saw his brother also got up and walked towards him. “Xiaoxiao, now that you’re up, go have breakfast. I bought you breakfast.”
“Okay.”
Su Shizhi placed the milk in front of him. “This is your and Xiaobei’s favorite milk. I bought a bottle for each of you.”
“I like pure milk best. I don’t like banana-flavored milk. This is Xiaobei’s favorite milk,” Su Shixiao said calmly. He lowered his eyes and stirred the meat porridge in his bowl, his hand unconsciously tightening around the spoon.
Su Shizhi felt an inexplicable discomfort well up in his heart, like a lump in his throat. “…I’ll go buy you pure milk now.”
