Chapter 38: Art Exhibition
After getting the tickets, Nan Yanzhou took him to the milk tea shop up front. “What do you want to buy?”
Su Shixiao’s lips curled slightly behind him. “Iced lemonade.”
“Okay.”
After buying their iced milk tea, they headed to the cinema. Su Shixiao felt strangely relieved when he saw the figure before him.
In the cinema, they found their seats. Su Shixiao glanced around and saw that there were quite a few people around. This movie seemed quite popular.
After sitting down, Nan Yanzhou started playing with his phone and saw a message from Su Shizhi.
Su Shizhi: Where did you take my second brother?
Su Shizhi: [Knife Eyes]jpg.
Nan Yanzhou got angry when he thought of Su Shixiao’s aggrieved and sad way of telling him about being ignored, and he retorted.
Nan Feng: Why aren’t we having fun at the beach in Country Q?
Su Shizhi, who was sitting on the sofa at home, was already angry at his earlier sarcasm, but it only made him feel worse.
Su Shizhi: Xiaoxiao told you?
Su Shizhi: He usually never tells us anything, but he told you!!!
Su Shizhi: I don’t know what’s so good about you, but I feel like he trusts you.
Nan Yanzhou chuckled softly while holding his phone. Su Shixiao turned to look at him and whispered, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” Nan Yanzhou said, typing away. “Your brother checked up on me, asking where I took you.”
“Oh.”
Su Shixiao hadn’t expected his brother to care so much about him. He’d call him if he didn’t come home for more than three days, just like he did last time on a business trip.
Nanfeng: I’m wondering if your family favors Xiaobei too much and keeps neglecting Su Shixiao?
Nanfeng: When you have time, talk to your parents and grandparents.
Nanfeng: And don’t worry, I’ll get your brother home safely.
Nan Yanzhou ignored him. He’d said everything he should and shouldn’t have said, and even reminded him. It was up to Su Shizhi to see what he would do.
Su Shizhi fell silent after seeing his message. It felt as if time had stood still. All he could think of was Su Shixiao, the well-behaved and sensible one, and Su Shibei, the lively and cheerful one. As time passed, he realized he was spending less and less time with Su Shixiao, and more and more time with Su Shibei.
After the movie, they returned to the hotel. It was already past eleven o’clock when he got out of the shower. He saw his mother had sent him a message.
Mom: Xiaoxiao, I’ve been thinking about it all day, and after all this thought, I still feel like apologizing to you.
Mom: I really didn’t forget about you on purpose. I was just too busy with work. I forgot. I’m sorry. Xiaoxiao is so sensible. You won’t be angry with me, right?
Su Shixiao silently read her message for a few seconds. This was the first time his mother had apologized to him after ignoring him. He couldn’t describe the feeling in his heart. Instead of feeling happy because of her apology, he felt a sour, gloomy feeling.
Did his mother think he was angry just because of this one neglect? But in fact, he wasn’t angry just because he was ignored once in a while. It was because he had been ignored since childhood. That was the fundamental reason.
He replied to Yan Jiaxin with two words: “It’s okay.” He didn’t say he was still angry or forgive her.
His mother replied immediately after receiving the message.
Mom: “Your brother is home to pick you up. Why didn’t you come with him?”
He replied with a gloomy face.
Yuanxiao: “I have a meeting with a friend.”
The next day, Su Shixiao was awakened by a call from Nan Yanzhou. “Hello, Brother Yanzhou.”
“Are you up yet?” Nan Yanzhou turned off the air conditioner with the remote and continued, “We’ll have breakfast in a few minutes, and then we’ll go see that art exhibition you’ve been dreaming of.”
For the first time, someone remembered what he wanted to do and carried it out for him. He felt happy from the inside out, and his cold voice became more cheerful. “Okay, I’ll get up now.”
“Okay, come to my room when you’re done washing up.” Nan Yanzhou sat on the sofa and tapped the sofa with his fingertips. He felt the change in his voice and paused. Was he really that happy?
Su Shixiao finished washing up in less than ten minutes, changed his clothes, and went out to find Nan Yanzhou.
Arriving at the door, he knocked twice, and it opened. Nan Yanzhou took the power card and walked out, looking down at him. “Let’s go.”
“Okay.”
Nan Yanzhou took Su Shixiao to the hottest dim sum restaurant near the hotel. After ordering, the waiter quickly brought their meals. Nan Yanzhou gave him the plain milk and took the white peach flavored milk for himself. Seeing Su Shixiao looking at him in surprise, he explained, “I see you prefer plain milk.”
He didn’t know what the feeling was, but it felt warm. It was the first time someone remembered his preference. He smiled especially sweetly, a smile that radiated from within. “Yeah, I like it.”
Nan Yanzhou was dazzled by his smile. Su Shixiao looked so good when he smiled so sincerely. Realizing he had lost his composure, he quickly looked away. “Let’s try the xiaolongbao here. It’s a popular dim sum place around here.”
They took a taxi to their destination. Even before the exhibition opened, there was already a line at the entrance. Nan Yanzhou frowned at the sight. “Let’s go! Get in line, or we’ll be even more crowded later.”
“Yeah, let’s go.” Su Shixiao couldn’t help but smile at his reaction. He knew Nan Yanzhou would never do such a thing, and he had little patience to begin with, but he held back for him.
After waiting in line for over ten minutes and still nothing had started, Nan Yanzhou began to lose his patience. He gritted his teeth and said, “Su Shixiao, if anyone else had asked me to take them on a trip and see an art exhibition, I’d have told them to get out. You have to remember how good I’ve been to you.”
“Yeah, I know.” Su Shixiao smiled softly. “You’ve been the best to me.”
Nan Yanzhou’s heart tingled at his docile appearance. He manually turned his head back. “Tickets are being collected for the exhibition.”
Five minutes later, they finally entered the exhibition hall. They could see the decor was warmer, with a long row of paintings hanging around the walls.
Su Shixiao’s eyes lit up upon entering the exhibition. He peered at the most eye-catching painting, as if he could tell the story of the artist. Nan Yanzhou didn’t appreciate these paintings; he could only visually judge whether they were beautiful or not. He truly had no artistic talent. He boredly scanned all the paintings, leaving Su Shixiao with less than half before turning back to find Su Shixiao and waiting for him to finish. He discovered that he was only as patient as Su Shixiao; if he were to visit an exhibition with someone else, he would have simply left on his own.
Su Shixiao naturally noticed his slightly impatient expression and said with a smile, “Brother Yanzhou, if you don’t want to stay here, you can go back first. I can leave on my own after I’m done.”
“No, I promised your brother I’d bring you back safe and sound.” Nan Yanzhou leaned slightly against the wall, looking down at him. “I have to keep an eye on you.”
