Chapter 41: Car Accident
At eight o’clock the next evening, Su Shixiao drove to his appointment. He reached his destination after turning at a traffic light and drove for over ten minutes. He stopped the car and waited for the red light. During this time, he watched a video his friend had sent him. It was a video of Nan Yanzhou chatting intimately with another woman at a bar.
His heart ached as he saw it.
Wang Xiaohui: “Do you know the girl Mr. Nan was chatting with?”
Wang Xiaohui: “Is she his girlfriend?”
Su Shixiao’s mind was brought back to him when he heard the car behind him honk. He quickly put his phone down, glanced at the red light, and drove off.
As he drove, he lost himself in the video. A few seconds later, he saw a car approaching from the next intersection. In its haste, it didn’t notice the car below and crashed head-on into the car.
Su Shixiao was knocked unconscious, slamming directly onto the steering wheel. He immediately slammed on the brakes, but the momentum forced him into the car next to him. He felt a sharp pain in his leg, and bl00d streamed down his forehead.
Nearby cars immediately stopped and rushed over to investigate. Some even called the police and 120.
The next day, Su Shixiao was awakened by the pain. He pressed his head and opened his eyes to take in the unfamiliar surroundings.
The nurse changing his IV drip saw him awake and quickly pressed the bell, asking, “Are you awake?”
Su Shixiao saw himself in the hospital and suddenly remembered the car accident yesterday. “Yes.”
The doctor came in with his medical records, walked up to him, and asked softly, “Are you feeling any discomfort?”
Su Shixiao: “Headache, dizziness, a little nausea, and body aches.”
“That’s normal. You have a concussion and multiple soft tissue contusions. It’s nothing serious. For about a week, stay out of bed unless you need to go to the bathroom. Wait until you’ve recovered before getting out of bed. You’ll need to stay in the hospital for a few days for observation. You can only be discharged after all your injuries have healed.” The doctor put the pen in his br3ast pocket and gave him some additional instructions.
“Okay, thank you.”
“By the way, because the accident was minor, there were no casualties, and your injuries weren’t serious, the hospital hasn’t notified your family.” The doctor continued, “We’ve just contacted the police, and they’ll be here to talk to you shortly.”
Su Shixiao: “Okay, I understand. Thank you, doctor.”
An hour later, two police officers came to inquire about the situation. One of them, a taller man, said politely, “Hello, I’m here regarding yesterday’s traffic accident. We’re here to understand the situation. Just answer our questions truthfully.”
“Okay.”
After more than ten minutes, he concluded the conversation. Su Shixiao told them earnestly, “Handle it according to the police’s procedures. I’ll pay the compensation I owe.”
“Well, don’t worry, it’s okay,” the man smiled reassuringly. “We’ll notify you when the case has a result.”
After they left, he noticed his phone on the table next to him.
He turned on the screen and saw that He Junsui had called him multiple times and sent him numerous messages every day. He rubbed his aching forehead and called him.
“Xiaoxiao, I called you so many times yesterday, but you didn’t answer. I sent you so many messages, but you ignored me.” He Junsui asked worriedly, “Are you okay?”
Su Shixiao glanced at the amount of medicine left in the IV. “No, I had something urgent yesterday.”
“What could be so urgent that you didn’t even have time to send a message?” He Junsui wasn’t so easily fooled. He pressed on, “What’s the emergency? Do you know that if you don’t contact me today, I’ll come straight to your house?”
Su Shixiao knew he wasn’t easy to fool, so he told him directly, “I had a minor car accident.”
“What? Are you okay? Where are you now? I’ll come see you.”
“I’m really fine. I just had some minor injuries.” He texted He Junsui the hospital address and asked him to buy some food.
After hanging up, he called his boss at the company to ask for leave.
After requesting leave, he lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. Thinking of the video made him feel annoyed. The image kept replaying in his mind, making his already aching head even worse. I wanted to play with my phone, but the dizziness grew worse the more I played. I could only lie down and stare at the IV drip to distract myself.
He Junsui entered the ward carrying some fruit and light porridge and saw Su Shixiao in a daze. He put his things away and said, “Xiaoxiao, stop daydreaming. Drink your porridge.”
Su Shixiao only then realized he was there and raised his eyelids to look at him. “You’re here?”
He Junsui saw that he had a bandage on his head and was relieved that the rest of his condition was not serious.
“Yeah.” He Jun helped him open the lid of the porridge box. “Get up and have some.”
He stood up from the bed and sat up, thanking He Junsui sincerely. “Thank you.”
He Junsui found a stool and sat down, smiling, “You’re still so polite to me.”
He glanced at Su Shixiao, who was eating leisurely. “You didn’t tell your family about the car accident, did you?”
Su Shixiao swallowed his porridge before answering, “No, I only told you.”
He Junsui had an expression that said, “I knew it.” “If I called you and asked you, you wouldn’t tell me?”
“I guess so.”
He Junsui rolled his eyes. “You’re just being stubborn. What’s the matter? You’ve never told me since you were a kid.” Tell your family you’ve been carrying this all on your own. I don’t know what’s going on between you and your family, but it’s not good for you to keep doing this. They probably want you to rely on them.”
Su Shixiao didn’t want to discuss this and changed the subject. “I couldn’t go yesterday. Feiqing didn’t say anything, did she?”
“She didn’t say anything, but she just looked very sad.” He Junsui added, “You should explain it to her.”
Su Shixiao: “Okay, I’ll send her a message after dinner to explain.”
Nan Yanzhou has been busy with a new project and hasn’t seen Su Shixiao in two days. He hasn’t even sent a goodnight message. He used to text him every day a few days ago, but he’s been feeling a bit bored these past two days.
He plans to go see him now that he has some free time.
He entered the office but didn’t see Su Shixiao. Only the hardworking employees were there. One of them, noticing him, greeted him, “Hello, President Nan! Is there anything you want to talk to me about?”
Nan Yanzhou asked, “Where’s Su Shixiao?”
President Huang, who was sitting in the middle, replied, “Oh, Xiaoxiao took a leave of absence two days ago.”
Nan Yanzhou frowned slightly, his heart skipping a beat. “Why did he take such a long leave?”
President Huang said, “He said something family was going on and he needs a week off.”
“Okay, I see.”
He left the room, having never imagined anything serious could be happening at the Su family. Shizhi had even asked him out for drinks yesterday, and the thought of this made his brows darken. A faint worry welled up in his stomach. He pulled out his phone and called Su Shixiao.
