Chapter 48 Heartbeat
Su Shibei got out of the car, and Su Shizhi immediately called Nan Yanzhou.
Nan Yanzhou had just returned home when he heard the phone ring. He glanced down and saw it was Su Shizhi calling. He answered the call and turned on speaker, leaving the phone on the table. “Hello, why are you calling me?”
Su Shizhi leaned against the chair behind him. It was already dark, so he couldn’t see his expression. He said in a serious tone, “I want to know what happened with Xiaoxiao being framed and nearly fired?”
Nan Yanzhou, slumped over on the sofa, sat up at his words. Sensing Su Shizhi’s gloomy mood, he told him everything. “That woman has been fired, and Su Shixiao even called the police.” Don’t worry, he didn’t suffer any loss.”
“He finally came to me for help, but I ignored him because I heard Xiaobei was being bullied on set.” Su Shizhi blamed himself and felt uncomfortable, his throat dry. “Did you take him on the National Day trip because we went swimming at the beach and ignored him?”
Nan Yanzhou didn’t expect him to ask this, and after a moment’s pause, he replied, “Yes.”
“Yanzhou, thank you,” Su Shizhi said seriously. “I was there for Xiaoxiao when he was in trouble and needed help.”
“No need to thank me.”
After all, I was very grateful to be able to be with him.
After hanging up, Nan Yanzhou video-called Su Shixiao. Seeing that he didn’t seem very cheerful, he asked worriedly, “Su Shixiao, what’s wrong? You look down?”
Su Shixiao recounted the incident in a muffled voice. “I clearly didn’t want him to know. It’s too awkward, and he must be feeling really bad.”
Nan Yanzhou’s heart had already completely sided with Su Shixiao. “It’s okay. He was the one who forced you to tell me. Feel free to blame yourself. You’ve been feeling bad for so many years, so a few days of him feeling bad isn’t a big deal.”
Thinking of how he had been neglected and deprived since childhood, he felt heartbroken. He regretted having kept him close to him when he was little.
“I should have kept you close to me when you were little, pampering you like a little brother.”
Nan Yanzhou said with deep regret.
Su Shixiao was amused by his words. “You were so good to me when you were little. Maybe you don’t remember.”
“Then could you tell me about it?” Nan Yanzhou had no recollection.
“We’ll talk about it later when we have a chance.”
Su Shixiao will always remember when he was six years old and Nan Yanzhou and his friends came to play with his older brother and Xiaobei. His toy broke, and Nan Yanzhou fixed it for him and played with him. He had a blast that day.
For a while, Nan Yanzhou’s parents weren’t available, so they took him to school with them. One day, the four children gathered at the dining table for breakfast. Nan Yanzhou noticed that he preferred plain milk, so he gave him his plain milk and traded it with him. His mother had always thought he preferred banana-flavored milk.
During that time, Nan Yanzhou kept trading with him. He once asked him how he knew I liked plain milk.
He said he always drank only a few sips of the banana-flavored milk, and once saw him finish the plain milk.
Unfortunately, Nan Yanzhou only stayed at his house for less than a week.
When Nan Yanzhou was little, he’d always tease him and occasionally play with him whenever he came to his house. Since entering junior high, they’ve drifted apart. Nan Yanzhou rarely came to his house to hang out with his brother, instead making appointments in advance. The few times he came, he’d just watch Nan Yanzhou from afar.
If it weren’t for this internship, and he’d deliberately submitted his resume to Nan Yanzhou’s company, they probably wouldn’t have crossed paths. But he just couldn’t let it go, so he submitted his resume to his company.
Nan Yanzhou asked, “Are you alone in the hospital now?”
“Yeah.” Su Shixiao poured himself a cup of hot water. “I sent my grandma and my brother back home. Anyway, my condition isn’t that serious. I’m still well, and I should be able to be discharged in a couple of days.”
“Then I’ll go keep you company.” Nan Yanzhou didn’t realize the ambiguity of his words; he was only concerned about not leaving Su Shixiao alone in the hospital.
“No, I can do it on my own.” Su Shixiao looked at the man on the phone screen. “Nan Yanzhou, you live far from the hospital. You feel sorry for me, and I feel sorry for you too.”
Nan Yanzhou’s heartbeat quickened slightly when he heard him call his full name, a beat faster with each word he spoke.
“Nan Yanzhou, you just got off work and you probably haven’t had dinner yet. Go eat.”
Nan Yanzhou could clearly feel how fast his heart was beating. He nodded frantically, “Okay, I’ll hang up now.”
After hanging up, he raised his hand and touched his still-beating heart. “Fvck, this is real! Stop it!”
His heart beat faster and faster, so fast that he could even hear it.
On the other hand, Su Shixiao’s mood brightened upon seeing Nan Yanzhou, and he felt motivated to watch videos again.
He was scrolling when He Junsui called him. “What’s up?”
He Junsui’s teasing voice rang through the phone. “Nothing, I just heard Feiqing visited you in the hospital. How’s she? Isn’t she prettier than before?”
Su Shixiao thought for a moment. “Indeed, you’re so bored you’d call to ask that?”
“Oh, look at what you’re saying,” He Junsui said angrily. “I’m just calling to check on you. How’s your injury? Are you recovering well?”
“Yeah, you should be discharged in two days.”
“So soon? I’ll go to the hospital tomorrow to check.”
Su Shixiao was in a good mood and teased him, “You’d better not come. Let me have some peace and quiet.”
“Hey, Xiaoxiao, you’re going too far. I’m going to go tomorrow,” He Junsui said angrily.
The next day, Su Shixiao asked his grandmother to bring him his iPad. After breakfast, he fixed some minor issues with the painting he’d drawn at the aquarium and began coloring.
After a morning of coloring, he finally finished his painting. Grandma took his iPad and told him to have lunch. “Don’t paint yet. Have lunch.”
“Grandma, I’m not going to paint anymore. I’ll just transfer it to my phone.” Su Shixiao took the iPad back from her and quickly sent the drawing to his own phone.
He forwarded the drawing to Nan Yanzhou and sent him a message.
Yuanxiao: “I’m done.”
Yuanxiao: “Transfer the money.”
After finishing all that, he started eating lunch. Grandma handed him the almost-cooled soup. “Drink it first, or it’ll get cold.”
Su Shixiao: “Yes, thank you.”
Nan Yanzhou was sitting in his office, finishing up his new project plan, when he received Su Shixiao’s message. He opened it and saw a vivid image of an aquarium restaurant on the screen.
Two people sat by the glass in the corner. He was lazily admiring the whales swimming by, while Su Shixiao watched him.
With this realization, his heart began to beat slightly faster again. He smiled helplessly, “What on earth is going to happen?”
