Chapter 246: “The World’s Easiest Riddle” / “The Lonely Liar”
“The World’s Easiest Riddle”
“Hey, Sis…”
“Hmm? What’s wrong?”
“How long are you going to lie on top of me? Wouldn’t it be better to sleep in bed?”
“Why? Is this bad?”
“W-Well, you’re getting a bit heavy…”
At the Witch family’s mansion, Sierra was dozing off while looking at the garden from a traditional-style veranda, using Eleanor’s chest as a pillow.
“Alright, then. If you answer my riddle, I’ll move.”
“A riddle? W-What is it?”
“What’s the softest pillow in the world?”
“What… what do you mean?”
“Come on, answer.”
Sierra, half-asleep and looking like she couldn’t even tell if her eyes were open or closed, waited for an answer. Eleanor, seriously trying to think, couldn’t figure it out.
“I-I don’t know…”
“……”
“S-Sis!? Are you asleep!?”
“……”
“Hey, what’s the answer to the riddle!?”
“……”
“I really want to know!”
Shake-shake, jiggle-jiggle, jiggle-jiggle.
“The Lonely Liar”
“Sister.”
“What is it?”
At the Abitus family’s large dining hall—specifically, in the kitchen—Noblesse staff, like Milch, were on a day off. The date was February 13, the day before Valentine’s Day. Milch, wearing her custom apron, was preparing something.
“What are you doing?”
“Chocolate. Isn’t it obvious?”
She measured ingredients like cacao beans and Milch with just her eyes, not a scale, yet everything was perfectly portioned.
“…Who are you making it for?”
Milch’s younger sister, Cafe, covered her mouth in dismay, trembling in shock.
“…What’s this about?” Milch frowned at her sister’s question. Cafe pondered quietly.
…Thinking about it, my sister has no interest in worldly events. I knew she sometimes cooked during her breaks, but this must be a coincidence. She probably just wants to eat chocolate. If I tell her about Valentine’s Day, she might whimsically give it to someone else. That… must be avoided.
Actually, I want it! My sister’s chocolate—I want it all for myself!
Cafe recalled something she’d heard from someone in the royal capital: “If there’s no bread, let them eat cake.” Yes, that means—”If there’s no event, make one!”
“…Tomorrow is a day when older sisters give chocolate to their younger sisters. It’s an important global tradition.”
Before she realized it, ridiculous words had escaped Cafe’s mouth. Worried she’d gone too far, she waited for Milch’s response.
“I see. Then I’ll make some for you too.”
“…”
“What is it?”
“N-Nothing! Ehehe, hehe, hehehehehe~!”
Cafe started skipping around the kitchen like an overly joyous child, thrilled at the thought of receiving her sister’s chocolate—on the eve of this “special event.”
“…But you can do anything, can’t you, Sister?”
“Is that so?”
Milch measured sugar and a local sweet powder with perfect precision, her skills mesmerizing Cafe.
“It’ll be done soon. You can relax.”
“Okay.”
Cafe tried to hide her uncontrollable smile by having tea in the courtyard. After about thirty minutes, Milch appeared.
Her heart raced, but Milch was empty-handed.
“S-Sister!?”
“What?”
“W-Where’s the chocolate!?”
“Isn’t it for tomorrow?”
“…”
Oh… I did say that. Calm down, calm down, me. I just have to wait until the date changes, and then I can eat it.
That evening, Cafe repeatedly checked the clock. At 11:59 PM, she stationed herself in front of the magical refrigerator. At exactly midnight, Milch appeared.
“What are you doing?”
“…It’s tradition to eat it as soon as the date changes.”
“I see. But, unfortunately—”
As soon as the clock struck midnight, Cafe opened the fridge. But it was empty. Despair filled her as Milch said:
“Sorry. Some children came by earlier, so I gave it to them.”
“…W-What… what… what!?”
“What? Is there a horse here?”
“My chocolate… MY CHOCOLATE!!!”
Cafe burst into tears, catching Milch off guard. “Is this event really that important?” she muttered, before remembering something.
“Wait here.”
She quickly retrieved leftover ingredients, using a little magic to speed things up, and crafted a small chocolate.
“Sorry about that. Next time, I’ll make a bigger one.”
“…”
“What is it? Aren’t you going to eat?”
“This event requires the older sister to feed her younger sister.”
Even though her logic was increasingly inconsistent, Milch complied and fed Cafe the chocolate. With a melting expression, Cafe’s face softened.
“It’s delicious…”
“Sorry, I’m not good with events like this.”
Cafe confessed with a smile, “I lied about the event. I just wanted to eat your chocolate.”
Milch replied, “I see. Then I’ll definitely make a bigger one next time.”
“You’re not mad?”
“It must be hard having a sister like me. Thank you for handling everything at home. At least let me do this for you.”
That night, Cafe claimed, “The final tradition is for the younger sister to sleep in the older sister’s bed,” and snuck in beside Milch.
