I Heard I’m a Scummy Alpha? [Transmigration] - Chapter 9
Yan Zui had originally thought dinner at the Yan household would just be the four of them—herself, Qi Yunwei, Yan Zhao, and He Ran.
But not long after she returned, guests began to arrive one after another at the Yan family estate.
Yan Zhao asked Qi Yunwei and Yan Zui to stand at the door to greet them.
Not far away stood Qin Lifeng. Even without turning her head, Qi Yunwei could feel the cold, oppressive gaze boring into her back.
Distracted, she thought: Qi Fanghuai is unreliable, a complete lunatic. But Qin Lifeng, he’s more like a loyal hound. Maybe he’s a better match?
Her mind drifted further. Last time I met Qi Fanghuai, I ended up dreaming about him and Yan Zui that same night. If I look at Qin Lifeng now, does that mean I’ll dream about him and Yan Zui tonight?
Qi Yunwei sank into thought.
Suddenly, a shrill voice broke through her reverie.
“Yan Zui! Auntie wishes you a happy marriage. So this is the Alpha you married? Well, well, really heh.”
Qi Yunwei blinked back to reality, meeting the sharp, disdainful gaze of a thin, middle-aged woman.
The woman pointed at her and said to Yan Zui, “Now, it’s not that Auntie looks down on Qi Yunwei’s background, but I heard from your cousin that she dropped out after just two years of university. And after that? No job, no ambition—just idling at home all day. You’re so outstanding, Yan Zui. What were you thinking, marrying her? Don’t tell me she tricked you?”
The woman pretended to sound concerned, but her gloating was impossible to hide.
Qi Yunwei knew this type all too well—people who couldn’t stand to see others doing better than them. The moment they spotted a flaw, they’d shout it to the heavens, desperate to flaunt a sense of superiority that never existed before.
From the day Yan Zui was born, everything about her—her talent, her career—had been flawless. Naturally, everyone expected her Alpha to be just as exceptional. Instead, she suddenly married the universally acknowledged “good-for-nothing” Alpha. Shock gave way to secret delight.
So what if an Omega is more capable than an Alpha? they thought. In the end, she still married trash.
Yan Zui’s face remained cold.
“Auntie, she’s my Alpha now. If you think she’s unworthy, you can take it up with my parents—they’re waiting inside.”
A flicker of embarrassment crossed the woman’s face. “Alright, alright, Auntie won’t say any more. Kids always think they know best. One day you’ll see for yourself.” She tugged her son along into the villa.
As they passed, both mother and son gave Qi Yunwei identical scornful glares.
Qi Yunwei: “…”
Never in her life had she been treated with such blatant disdain.
Still, technically, their hostility wasn’t directed at her, but at the original owner of this body. So she felt oddly detached.
After standing for over half an hour, Qi Yunwei began to tire. Seeing no guests arriving for the moment, she lowered her lashes and closed her eyes for a brief rest.
Barely two minutes later, another family arrived—Yan Zui’s great-aunt’s household.
Just like before, their expressions made it clear: they despised her. Every glance carried the wish to sweep her straight into a trash bin.
Expressionless, Qi Yunwei stifled a yawn. She didn’t dare open her mouth under their scrutiny, so she held it back until tears welled in her eyes, glistening faintly under the porch light.
The great-aunt’s eyes lit up as if she’d stumbled on rare entertainment.
“Well, well! What’s this? Upset with me? I’ve never seen an Alpha cry before!”
Yan Zui turned her head.
Her gaze met Qi Yunwei’s wide, confused black eyes, shimmering with tears. For a moment, something unnameable stirred in her chest. Pressing her lips together, she asked quietly, “Why are you crying?”
Qi Yunwei blinked slowly, the mist fading from her eyes.
Crying? Who’s crying?
Before she could explain, Yan Zui turned back, her expression cooling.
“Please, come in,” she said to the great-aunt.
That look froze the woman in her tracks. Irritated, she muttered, “Yan Zui, Auntie only means well. An ill-suited marriage will only lead to trouble. My elder sister’s daughter—such an excellent Alpha—you refused even to meet her.”
“Whether she’s excellent or not has nothing to do with me. As for her wanting into the Yan Corporation, I’ll answer you now: impossible,” Yan Zui replied flatly. “You can go in. Or don’t, if you’d rather not.”
The woman’s face stiffened. “Yan Zui, I’m your aunt!”
“Family ties stretch thin,” Yan Zui said evenly.
The great-aunt bristled, but the woman behind her finally stepped forward, apologizing quickly: “My mother’s going through menopause, forgive her if she gets unreasonable.” She pulled the older woman inside.
The doorway fell quiet again.
“Thank you,” Qi Yunwei murmured.
Yan Zui only responded with a soft “Mm.”
The next few groups of guests were at least polite enough not to insult her to her face. They made some small talk, ignored her existence, and moved on.
“Everyone’s here. Let’s go,” Yan Zui said.
Qi Yunwei followed her inside. Passing by Qin Lifeng, she noticed he instinctively fell into step behind Yan Zui.
Uneasy, she leaned closer to whisper, “They won’t go tattling to Father- and Mother-in-law, right? If they hear what kind of person I supposedly am and get angry, what if something happens?”
“They won’t,” Yan Zui replied. “They don’t dare.”
Even if they did, it wouldn’t matter. Her parents only cared about grandchildren. Which Alpha they came from was irrelevant.
Qi Yunwei thought she saw the faintest curve tug at Yan Zui’s lips, gone almost before it appeared.
“That’s a relief.” She instinctively drifted a little farther away from Yan Zui and cast a glance at Qin Lifeng behind them.
His shadowed gaze made her skin prickle.
Something’s definitely off with him, she thought. Hopefully, I’m just imagining it.
As the evening’s stars, the two of them instantly drew every eye when they entered the living room.
Qi Yunwei carefully studied Yan Zhao and He Ran’s expressions—both smiling warmly.
So they do know how to act according to the situation. At least they understand who not to offend.
Yan Zhao rose personally to introduce Qi Yunwei to the relatives. The same people who had mocked or ignored her earlier now smiled and praised them as a “perfect pair.”
Qi Yunwei sweated inwardly, wondering how on earth Yan Zhao had developed such thick rose-colored filters toward her.
Her face ached from holding her smile as she accepted one red envelope after another, until finally everyone moved into the dining room.
There were too many guests, so they split into two tables—elders at one, juniors at the other. As the newlyweds, Qi Yunwei and Yan Zui sat with the elders.
Yan Zui turned to Qin Lifeng. “You should go eat.”
His harsh expression softened slightly. Glancing at Qi Yunwei’s back, he said, “President Yan, I’m not hungry.”
Yan Zui inclined her head. Under the lights, her black eyes gleamed with a hint of blue, like the depths of a midnight ocean.
Qin Lifeng’s chest constricted.
She should’ve been mine.
Throughout the meal, Qi Yunwei felt a constant chill at her back—no less oppressive than standing at the door earlier. She forced herself to think optimistically: At least it’s like free air conditioning.
When dinner was over and the relatives had all left, Yan Zhao said, “It’s late. Go back to the villa and rest. We can talk tomorrow.”
Since Yan Zui usually stayed at her apartment, there was no need to pack. They could leave right away.
Qin Lifeng drove the car around. Yan Zui and Qi Yunwei got into the back seat.
The butler loaded Qi Yunwei’s suitcase into the trunk, then walked around to the front passenger door and sat down.
Startled, Qi Yunwei nudged Yan Zui, who had closed her eyes to rest.
Yan Zui opened them and said calmly, “Uncle Jiang, with Lifeng here, you don’t need to worry. We can manage on our own.”
The butler turned back with a smile. “Miss, the master insisted. He’s not at ease leaving just the two of you. I’ll come along to watch over you.”
Qi Yunwei: “…”
See? I knew we should’ve bought that mattress.
