I Hoard Supplies and Raise a Child in the Wasteland World by Drawing Cards (GL) - Chapter 10
Lin Zhong looked at the group chat messages and knocked on Lin Ran’s bedroom door. “Lin Ran, Lin Ran, what do those messages in the group chat mean?”
Lin Ran opened the door with a cold expression. “It means what it says. Go look out the window, and you’ll find out. If you don’t want to die, just stay put and don’t open the door and get yourself killed.”
“What’s with your attitude? Is that any way to talk to your father?”
Lin Ran couldn’t be bothered with him and locked the door.
Lin Zhong stood outside the door and cursed. “I just asked you a few questions. You’ve gotten so cocky you won’t even listen to me anymore. Fine, I’ll look for myself. I’m not a three-year-old; I won’t get scared.”
With that, Lin Zhong went to the living room balcony, squinting as he looked outside. At the complex’s main entrance, two people were biting each other, and the ground seemed to be covered in bl00d.
Lin Zhong was still a bit confused. He continued to watch and saw many more instances of people biting others in the complex. He nervously turned on the TV, where the news anchor was giving an emergency broadcast.
“Attention, all residents. There have been multiple incidents of people biting people in the Jiangbei City area. Investigations suggest this is due to a virus. Please do not panic and wait patiently for further instructions at home. Remember, do not go outside unless absolutely necessary!”
Lin Zhong changed the channel, and it was broadcasting the same thing. “Attention, all residents. The main affected areas are currently Wanhua Street and Jianshe Road. Jiangbei City First Hospital has become a major containment area. Please avoid this area at all costs…”
Lin Zhong was so scared he changed channels again, and they were all broadcasting similar emergency news. He collapsed on the sofa in shock.
Meanwhile, Lin Ran, through the surveillance cameras, saw zombies starting to wander outside the first-floor entrance. When a pedestrian walked by, the zombies would immediately rush over and bite them.
At the same time, Mo Shuyu, a few colleagues, and some patients were hiding in a medical warehouse.
Just moments ago, the hospital hallway suddenly erupted in chaos. Several patients who were brought in for emergency care suddenly went berserk and started biting the doctors. The scene was extremely bloody.
Mo Shuyu, an emergency room doctor at Jiangbei City First Hospital, witnessed the bloody scene and immediately hid in a medical supply room on the first floor with her colleagues and a few patients.
They were blocked by rows of shelves, and they had locked the door from the inside. The few of them were temporarily safe, hiding behind the last row of shelves.
Outside the medical supply room, screams, growls, and cries for help could be heard. There were so many living people outside that the zombies wouldn’t notice them.
Mo Shuyu carefully called home. The call was answered quickly. Cheng Yanhong answered the phone, her voice filled with sobs. “Shuyu, how are you doing? I saw on the news that there are a lot of monsters outside. Please be careful at the hospital.”
“Mom, please don’t worry. Remember not to go outside and take good care of Ruanruan. I’ll find a way to come back,” Mo Shuyu said in a low voice. But even she knew that coming back was likely impossible.
The hospital was already in such chaos, which meant the outside world must have been completely overrun. It was difficult enough for her to survive, let alone go back. She said this just to ease her mother’s worries.
“Okay, don’t worry. I’ll take good care of Ruanruan. Shuyu, if it gets too bad, just find a safe place to hide. Staying alive is what’s important. Don’t take any risks to come back, okay?” Cheng Yanhong instructed through her tears.
“Okay, I’ll remember all that. Mom, don’t worry about me. It’s a bit inconvenient for me to talk right now, so let’s keep it short.”
Just as Mo Shuyu was about to hang up, she heard her daughter’s voice on the phone. “Mommy, Ruanruan misses you~”
Hearing the little one’s voice, Mo Shuyu almost broke down, her eyes turning red. “Be a good girl, Ruanruan. Mommy misses you, too. You be a good girl and play at home with grandma. Mommy will come back to play with you as soon as possible, okay?”
“Okay!” The little one didn’t understand what was happening outside and still sounded full of energy.
The corners of Mo Shuyu’s lips curled up slightly, but her eyes were redder than before. This adorable little girl, Mo Shuyu wondered if she would ever get to see her again.
“Mommy has to go now, Ruanruan. Goodbye,” Mo Shuyu said, trying to keep her voice steady.
“Bye, Mommy.” The little one just thought it was a normal conversation. Mommy would come home from work to play with her and bring her yummy strawberry candy, just like always.
After Mo Shuyu hung up, there were only two other people in the medical supply room who were also on the phone with their families. They didn’t talk for too long, afraid of anything happening, and quickly hung up. The medical supply room became quiet, with only the zombies’ mournful howls and people’s frantic cries for help outside.
Around noon, Lin Ran came out of her room. She went to the kitchen and heated a can of hot pot and steamed half a pot of rice. She planned to leave after lunch. From 9 a.m. until now, Jiangbei City’s police force was overwhelmed and had no time to worry about her. After all, it took 100 cores to get one drawing, and it would take her a good while to collect them.
After heating the can, Lin Ran started eating the steaming hot pot. Lin Zhong, however, was scared to death and had no appetite. He was even more furious seeing Lin Ran eating while watching the zombies on TV.
“Eat, eat, eat! How can you still eat at a time like this? Why don’t you try to think of a solution?” Lin Zhong said, sitting anxiously on the sofa.
“Why should I think of a solution? Didn’t you see the news? The zombies are breaking out all over Planet R2. Even if I were a living bodhisattva, I wouldn’t be able to solve this. You should be using this time to think about how to save your own life,” Lin Ran said and continued to eat.
After eating, Lin Ran washed the dishes. She then prepared a waterproof backpack. Lin Ran tied the compound crossbow and ten bolts securely to the backpack and stuffed a lot of energy bars, crackers, and bottled water inside. She also put in a high-magnification telescope and some rope.
After preparing all that, Lin Ran got dressed. Even though it was hot outside, she wore a denim jacket to avoid unnecessary scratches when fighting zombies.
When Lin Zhong saw she was about to go out, he panicked. He felt a sense of security being with her, and being alone would be too terrifying.
“What are you doing? You’re not going out, are you, Lin Ran? I’m telling you, what you’re doing is suicide. Don’t you see how many people are running back home? Who in their right mind would go out and seek death now?” Lin Zhong said angrily.
Lin Ran turned to look at Lin Zhong. “If you want to live, stay home and don’t ask so many unnecessary questions.”
Surviving in the apocalypse was an extremely exhausting task, both physically and mentally. Lin Ran didn’t want to come home after a day of fighting for her life only to listen to an unrelated person complain.
Lin Zhong was scared by Lin Ran’s look, but he raised his voice again. “You’re my daughter! What, you’re going to hit me?”
Lin Ran put on her boots and gave Lin Zhong a cold laugh. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Zombies are extremely sensitive to sound. If you’re not afraid of dying, you can be a little louder. The zombies in the fire escape haven’t had lunch yet.”
“Lin Ran, you’re crazy!” As if remembering not to be loud, Lin Zhong shrank back onto the sofa.
Lin Ran ignored Lin Zhong and left with her backpack.
She was wearing a pair of thin black jeans, the bottom of which were tucked into her black boots. She wore a black tank top and a light blue denim jacket over it. Lin Ran zipped it up and tied her curly hair up to make it easier to move.
Lin Ran had a thought, and the Tang Dao appeared in her hand.
She pulled the blade out of its scabbard, put the scabbard away, and held only the long blade in her hand.
Lin Ran didn’t dare to take the elevator down. Although the power system was still working, she was afraid that when the elevator reached the first floor, there would be a large crowd of zombies at the door, and she would be dead for sure. It was much safer to take the stairs.
Lin Ran took a deep breath and slowly went down the fire escape on her side.
She got down to the seventh floor, and everything was safe. She hadn’t encountered a single zombie. But when she reached the sixth floor, Lin Ran came face to face with two zombies wandering in the fire escape.
