I Hoard Supplies and Raise a Child in the Wasteland World by Drawing Cards (GL) - Chapter 14
The accuracy of her shots was a good thing, but it used up a lot of arrows. Lin Ran secretly thought that she would have to find another way to handle this later, although she had a way to solve it for now.
She could kill a batch of zombies first, and then collect the arrows afterward, reusing the ones she had already shot. This would allow her to take out several more waves of zombies.
With this thought, Lin Ran didn’t waste any time. She continued to load and shoot arrows. When the zombies were about ten meters away, Lin Ran would take them out with a crossbow bolt. However, there were some that got through.
When a zombie came at her from the side, Lin Ran didn’t panic. She threw the compound crossbow aside, and the Tang Dao appeared in her hand the next moment. She slashed forcefully with the long blade, and the zombie’s neck was immediately struck. Foul-smelling bl00d splattered out. Lin Ran kicked the zombie in the chest, pulled the blade out forcefully, and then slashed at the zombie again. The zombie immediately collapsed to the ground.
While no other zombies were crowding around, Lin Ran held the Tang Dao in one hand and quickly pulled out the arrows that had been shot into the zombies’ bodies with the other. In a short time, she had pulled out over 30 arrows.
Many of the residents of Building 5 and Building 9 saw this scene.
“Look, is that person killing monsters?”
“I think I’ve seen that woman who’s killing the monsters. A few days ago, it seems she was the one who had a truckload of stuff delivered to the complex.”
“That person is seriously amazing. She’s killed 40 or 50 zombies by herself. Can she be my bodyguard? I’ll pay her.”
Lin Ran didn’t care about any of this. After picking up most of the arrows, she hid back at the entrance of the convenience store. At that moment, the second wave of zombies, who had been attracted by the noise, arrived about 20 meters away from Lin Ran.
Lin Ran continued to aim and load arrows. Her movements were even more practiced than before. As the arrows flew out one by one, the zombies also fell one by one.
Even just loading the crossbow bolts was a huge drain on Lin Ran’s energy. After shooting over 40 bolts for the second time, Lin Ran was starting to feel a bit weak again.
“Congratulations, darling. You have now collected a total of 145 zombie cores. Keep up the good work!” the system’s voice sounded. Lin Ran finally breathed a sigh of relief. She had finally gathered enough zombie cores, but the price was that she had used up 50 of the 100 bolts in her space.
It would be too much of a waste of energy to go and collect those arrows again. Lin Ran went back into the supermarket, grabbed a can of energy drink, and ate two chocolate bars to replenish her strength. Before she could rest any longer, the system’s mechanical voice sounded in her mind again.
“The card-drawing location has been refreshed. You will need to find it yourself.”
“What? I have to find it myself? Are there any clues?” Lin Ran felt her head start to ache.
“Yes, darling. The card-drawing system will emit loud music. The zombies will also be attracted by the music, so you can usually find the card-drawing location where the most zombies are. But don’t worry, darling, our card-drawing system is very user-friendly. Within a 10-meter radius of the machine, zombies cannot enter,” the system continued to explain.
Lin Ran’s expression changed. “The music is loud? Is it only me and the zombies who can hear it, or can everyone?”
The system paused for a moment before continuing. “That’s so perceptive of you, darling. Of course, everyone can hear the music. Although the card-drawing system is your personal system, once the machine is in a fixed location, anyone who meets the requirement of collecting 100 cores can use it to draw. And there are only 10 prizes in the Grade 1 drawing machine. Once they’re all gone, they’re gone. So you’d better hurry and find the machine to avoid someone else getting there first.”
Lin Ran was completely stunned. So anyone could use this card-drawing machine?
As if it heard Lin Ran’s dissatisfaction, the system gave an awkward chuckle and consoled her. “Don’t worry, darling. Although everyone can use the card-drawing machine, you have things like the upgradable space, the Tang Dao, and the motorcycle that ordinary people don’t have. If you think about it, you have three special abilities more than others. Doesn’t that make you feel a lot better?”
Lin Ran gritted her teeth. “Thanks a lot. How thoughtful of you.”
“You’re welcome. This system is just that thoughtful,” the system’s jarring mechanical voice sounded again.
Lin Ran quickly turned and went back into the store. She went to the bathroom and then prepared to leave. As she passed a shelf, Lin Ran saw a pair of fingerless leather gloves. She grabbed a pair and put them on. Using the Tang Dao to kill zombies was hard on her hands and wrists. Having a pair of gloves would at least protect her palms.
After doing this, Lin Ran went back into the convenience store. She had a thought, and a flashy purple heavy motorcycle appeared in an empty space in the middle of the store. The apocalypse had just begun, and there were many living people in the complex. If she suddenly materialized a motorcycle outside, someone might get ideas. To be safe, it was better to be cautious. There was a wheelchair ramp at the entrance of the convenience store, so she could just ride the motorcycle down the ramp later.
Lin Ran got on the motorcycle, shifted gears, and twisted the throttle. The loud roar of the heavy motorcycle immediately echoed in the quiet complex. The sound was so deafening that many zombies were attracted to it.
Lin Ran almost ground her teeth together and cursed in her mind. “Are you sure this motorcycle is a helpful ability and not a death wish?”
System 33 gave an awkward chuckle. “Oh, you can’t blame me for that. We systems are only responsible for providing special abilities; we’re not responsible for assessing whether they’re suitable or not.”
“You guys are so responsible,” Lin Ran said with a forced smile.
If she could drag the system out, Lin Ran would want to get rid of the useless system first. It seemed that only the Tang Dao and the portable space were reliable. This noisy, broken-down motorcycle was practically inviting zombies to her. It was a moving target. And the card-drawing system was even worse. The location was open to anyone who had cores. Lin Ran really wanted to hit someone.
But at this moment, the zombies were rushing at her like crazy. Lin Ran had no choice. Looking at the zombies surging toward her, Lin Ran took a deep breath, and her heart grew calmer. The system had already put her in such a mess; it couldn’t get any worse than this. With that thought, Lin Ran gave it full throttle, and the heavy motorcycle shot out like an arrow from a bow.
With the loud roar in her ears, Lin Ran felt numb. They knew it was the apocalypse, so why couldn’t they have given the motorcycle some noise reduction?
The system seemed to have heard Lin Ran’s thoughts and explained with a hint of embarrassment. “Darling, the motorcycle wouldn’t be cool without the noise reduction. With the roaring sound, you’ll be the coolest survivor in the apocalypse. We designed it this way for you.”
“Thanks a lot,” Lin Ran replied with a sarcastic smile. Whether it was cool or not was a secondary issue; it was pretty good at attracting death.
She couldn’t be bothered to argue with the system anymore. She was already on a sinking ship, and it would be hard to get off now. She could only take things one step at a time.
But to be fair, the motorcycle looked bulky but was very nimble to ride. Lin Ran even felt that the motorcycle performed better than those used for racing. For example, just now, to avoid a zombie that was catching up to her, she did a sudden fishtail. If she didn’t have good control or if the motorcycle’s performance was bad, the whole bike would have been thrown out. But this motorcycle remained very stable.
So, Lin Ran was wildly twisting the throttle while focusing intensely on dodging zombies. This whole way, even though many zombies were chasing her, not a single one could touch her.
On Binjiang Road, if someone were to look down from an office building, they would see a flashy purple motorcycle speeding down the road, with a large group of zombies chasing after it. It was a spectacular sight.
Lin Ran rode down Binjiang Road and, before long, heard a place that was even louder than her motorcycle. It seemed that all the surrounding zombies were gathering at this location.
Lin Ran could almost be certain that this kind of foolish and showy stunt was something the system would do. She just had to charge forward. Thinking this, she twisted the throttle all the way. The road section was clear of cars, and there weren’t many zombies, so Lin Ran sped toward the several-story building.
When the motorcycle reached the intersection, a few zombies suddenly darted out and lunged at Lin Ran’s face. Lin Ran made a nimble sharp turn, and the motorcycle spun out in a graceful arc, dodging the zombies’ attacks. Lin Ran made a skillful U-turn and headed back toward the music.
In contrast, if there were any living people, they would be running away. Lin Ran seemed completely out of place. She looked like she was actively seeking death.
Lin Ran’s motorcycle was very fast. So even if zombies appeared and ran in the same direction, by the time they realized Lin Ran was a living person, she had already sped away on her motorcycle. As a result, Lin Ran’s journey was smooth until she was almost there.
She glanced at the sign on the building, which read: Jiangbei City First Hospital. She didn’t have time to hesitate. The zombies behind her were gathering more and more, and they were all heading toward the main entrance. Lin Ran rode the motorcycle to the back of the hospital’s outpatient building. She had a thought and put the motorcycle away, then cautiously and quietly observed which window was open.
There were too many zombies at the main entrance. They were all rushing into the building like crazy. Even with her skills, entering through the front door would be suicide. So, Lin Ran decided to climb through a window. She checked the time: 4:15 p.m. There were a little over two hours left before the card-drawing system disappeared.
Coincidentally, a window in an office on the first floor near a bush was half-open. The Tang Dao in Lin Ran’s hand quickly disappeared. She grabbed the window with both hands, hooked her right leg up, and with a strong pull from her arms, she sat on the windowsill. This was because Lin Ran had killed too many zombies and was a bit low on energy; otherwise, it wouldn’t have been so difficult.
At the same time, the people trapped in the medical supply room were also starting to get anxious.
“What do we do? I just took a peek, and there are more and more zombies outside. Where is this damn music coming from?” Xu Xiongwei cursed in a low voice.
“Yeah, aren’t you two doctors here? You need to find a way to get us out,” another male Alpha, Xu Jun, said irritably.
“We wish we could. You’ve seen the situation outside; it’s full of monsters. How are we supposed to get out? We may be doctors here, but what good is that now? Everyone needs to be responsible for their own life,” Zhang Wen said grumpily. He wanted to go home, too.
“Everyone, let’s not panic. Let’s just wait and see,” Mo Shuyu could only say to comfort them. After all, with the environment outside, there was nothing she could do either.
“Wait, wait, wait. Wait for what? To die? Doesn’t your hospital have a secret passage or something? I’m so fed up. I haven’t even dated an Omega yet. I don’t want to die,” Xu Xiongwei said, pacing back and forth in the medical supply room.
“Shut up and stop attracting the zombies,” Xu Jun cursed.
“I don’t care anymore. I’ve already seen a lot of doctors and patients turn into monsters. Since that’s the case, I might as well have some fun first. Xiao Zheng and Dr. Mo are both Omegas, right? Perfect. With us three Alphas, you can have a good time before you die,” Xu Xiongwei said, his eyes scanning Zheng Huizhong and Mo Shuyu before finally settling on Mo Shuyu.
