I Hoard Supplies and Raise a Child in the Wasteland World by Drawing Cards (GL) - Chapter 16
Zhang Wen looked at Mo Shuyu behind Lin Ran, feeling a sense of being caught between a rock and a hard place. He didn’t succeed, and someone else had swooped in and taken Mo Shuyu from him.
After dealing with the three useless men, Lin Ran turned to look at Mo Shuyu, only to see her standing five or six meters away behind her. She was clearly scared by Lin Ran’s actions.
Lin Ran had transmigrated into this body. She was not an Alpha in her past life, and her former profession had made her a cold and composed person. Concepts like “cherishing the fairer s3x” were not in Lin Ran’s dictionary. She would only do what was most beneficial for herself and make the most advantageous choices. Saving her neighbor was already an exception to her rule. Now, seeing the look on her neighbor’s face, it was clear that she was scared of her and probably wouldn’t want to leave with her.
This was perfect. No one owed anyone anything, and she didn’t have to carry this burden. Lin Ran’s eyebrows furrowed slightly as she walked toward the door that led from the medical supply room to the corridor.
Mo Shuyu then came to her senses. Lin Ran had just saved her. Although it seemed a bit cruel, if Lin Ran hadn’t appeared, she would have ended up worse than Xu Xiongwei. She would either have been tortured to death by those beasts or bitten by a zombie. Therefore, what Lin Ran did was not wrong at all.
Mo Shuyu quickly chased after her and asked cautiously, “Lin Ran, where are you going?”
Lin Ran didn’t expect Mo Shuyu to follow her. She frowned slightly and looked at Mo Shuyu, a hint of impatience in her expression. She had wasted at least 15 minutes of her time to save Mo Shuyu.
“I need to find where this music is coming from. I’m leaving. Take care of yourself,” Lin Ran said, about to leave.
In a moment of desperation, Mo Shuyu grabbed Lin Ran’s wrist. Lin Ran was her neighbor. She was going to go home eventually, so if she followed Lin Ran, could she also go home? Her mother and daughter were still at home waiting for her. Even if the hope was slim, Mo Shuyu wanted to try.
Lin Ran’s expression darkened when her wrist was grabbed. She stared at Mo Shuyu coldly. “What? Something else?”
Seeing Lin Ran’s cold expression toward her, Mo Shuyu quickly said, “Can I go with you? I mean, we’re neighbors. When you go back, can you take me with you? I know this is a big ask, but my daughter is waiting for me at home. Or, if you want me to agree to some conditions, as long as I can do it, I’ll agree to anything.”
Mo Shuyu saw that Lin Ran still looked impatient and gritted her teeth. “That includes what you were thinking before.”
When a person is at their most desperate, they won’t easily let go of a lifeline. Mo Shuyu couldn’t believe these words were coming out of her own mouth. She never thought she would one day use her body as a bargaining chip. But for the sake of her mother and daughter, she was willing to endure it. If the outside world was really filled with monsters, what would her mother and daughter do without her?
Lin Ran sized up Mo Shuyu, looking speechless. What was this Dr. Mo talking about? She wasn’t interested in any of it.
“Dr. Mo, is it? To be honest, there’s nothing I want you to do. Besides, I said I’m going to look for this music, and it will be very dangerous. You shouldn’t risk it. Also, I’m not a charity. I won’t keep useless people around. I helped you just now purely to repay a favor. You didn’t make things difficult for me when my house was being renovated, which shows that you’re a reasonable person. That’s why I helped you.”
Mo Shuyu had considered a million possibilities, even starting to think about having an intimate relationship with Lin Ran after they got back. She never expected Lin Ran to reject her so directly. For a moment, she was stunned. Seeing Lin Ran reach for the door, Mo Shuyu again gripped Lin Ran’s wrist tightly. She could feel Lin Ran’s expression had turned truly cold.
Mo Shuyu’s mind raced. She quickly said, “I’m not completely useless. I’m a doctor in the emergency department. You also said just now that the outside is full of zombies. People get sick. If you get into an accident, I can help you. And we’re neighbors. It’s on your way home to take me back. The more chaotic the world gets, the more you need a doctor by your side.”
Gritting her teeth, Mo Shuyu continued, “And I’m an Omega. If you go into a susceptible period, I can act as your soothing agent, so you won’t need to inject suppressants anymore.”
Lin Ran’s mind raced. If the apocalypse came, keeping a doctor by her side was indeed useful. And this Dr. Mo was an emergency room doctor, so she should be experienced in saving people. More importantly, she was her neighbor. If she were to get into an accident, this neighbor might actually be able to help.
Although Lin Ran knew some basic first aid, she couldn’t compare to a professional doctor. She thought for about half a minute and then nodded at Mo Shuyu. “Alright. Stick close to me. If something happens, I won’t have the time to save you.”
With that, Lin Ran took a machete from her backpack and handed it to Mo Shuyu, saying coldly, “Take this. If you want to live, don’t show any mercy to the zombies. Aim for the spine. You’re a doctor; you should be more familiar with human anatomy than I am.”
After she finished speaking, without waiting for Mo Shuyu to react, she turned the doorknob and walked out into the hallway.
There were fewer zombies on the first floor now. It seemed they, like her, had gone toward the music upstairs.
Mo Shuyu looked at the machete in her hand and, gathering her courage, held the hilt and followed closely behind Lin Ran.
Lin Ran wasn’t familiar with the hospital’s layout, but judging by the zombies’ behavior, the music was probably coming from the higher floors. However, she was a bit unsure which way to go. Given the zombies’ frenzy, Lin Ran was afraid that if she took the stairs, she would be torn to shreds and eaten by the zombies.
Zheng Huizhong saw Lin Ran and Mo Shuyu leave and was anxious. She simply rushed out, too. Otherwise, she would be left alone in the medical supply room, and there was no telling what Xu Jun and Zhang Wen would do to her.
But the moment she went out, she regretted it. While Lin Ran was thinking, two zombies wandering in the hallway rushed toward Lin Ran and Mo Shuyu.
The one in front was wearing patient clothes, and half of its head was missing. Lin Ran could even see the male zombie’s flowing brain matter. Even a doctor like Mo Shuyu felt her hands and feet go cold at the sight. The other zombie behind the male zombie was wearing a yellow delivery uniform. Before it mutated, it was probably a food delivery driver. Its appearance was slightly better than the patient zombie’s, with only the left side of its face chewed off, revealing the chilling white bone and terrifying flesh underneath.
Just as Lin Ran was about to make a move, she heard a piercing scream from outside the medical supply room. It was from Zheng Huizhong, who had followed them out.
Lin Ran’s expression turned completely cold. She said to Mo Shuyu beside her, “Hurry up.”
With that, Lin Ran made her move. The Tang Dao in her hand sliced through the air in a perfect arc, cutting into the patient zombie’s neck. After one slash, Lin Ran quickly pulled back her sword, but the zombie had already used that moment to lunge at Lin Ran.
Lin Ran used her knee to firmly press against her and the zombie’s chest, trying to create enough space for herself. In front of her was the male zombie’s foul, gaping mouth and its brain matter dripping down from time to time.
A vein popped on Lin Ran’s forehead. She was fighting desperately, gritting her teeth, and trying to kick the male zombie away. She had used up a lot of energy killing zombies in the complex, or she wouldn’t have been in such a pathetic state.
The delivery zombie behind the male zombie had already lunged at Mo Shuyu. Mo Shuyu was an Omega, so she was at a natural disadvantage in terms of strength. In addition, the delivery zombie was huge. Its foul mouth was getting closer and closer to Mo Shuyu’s tender, clean neck. She tried to use the sword to push it back like Lin Ran did, but the distance between her and the zombie was still closing in bit by bit.
Lin Ran, of course, couldn’t worry about Mo Shuyu. She knew that the scream from the medical supply room would attract a large number of zombies. If she didn’t get away, she would surely die here.
Lin Ran had only been reborn for a few days, and she didn’t want to die yet. With that thought, Lin Ran gritted her teeth and desperately pushed her right leg, which was pressed against the zombie’s chest. At the same time, the Tang Dao against the zombie’s neck also pushed with all its might, and the male zombie’s head was sliced off by Lin Ran.
She didn’t have time to wipe the foul bl00d from her face. She looked up and saw the delivery zombie open its mouth, about to bite into Mo Shuyu’s delicate, white neck.
Mo Shuyu tried to resist, but even with all her might, she was no match for the zombie’s strength.
Just as Mo Shuyu closed her eyes, thinking she was about to be bitten to death, she felt a lightness on her body. The zombie that had been pressing down on her was suddenly gone.
She opened her eyes and saw that the delivery zombie that had lunged at her had been pulled away by Lin Ran. While it wasn’t paying attention, Lin Ran had already slashed it heavily from behind. After pulling out the sword, she kicked the delivery zombie, sending it to the ground.
At that moment, Lin Ran raised her Tang Dao high with both hands and cleanly chopped the delivery zombie’s back neck.
“Hurry up, we can’t stay here,” Lin Ran said. Without waiting for Mo Shuyu’s reaction, she grabbed Mo Shuyu’s wrist and pulled her inside. As she walked, she said discontentedly, “This is why I don’t keep useless people around. That woman’s scream could have cost everyone their lives.”
Mo Shuyu’s heart was still pounding. Her eyes were slightly red, and she looked at Lin Ran with a complicated expression. Was this the Lin Ran she knew—so calm, rational, and decisive?
“Do you know if your hospital has any other way to go upstairs besides the regular stairs and elevators?” Lin Ran asked in a low voice as she pulled Mo Shuyu into a side triage station.
Mo Shuyu took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down. She knew that this was not the time to relax, get discouraged, or reflect on how terrifying the scene was. If she couldn’t provide value to Lin Ran, she genuinely felt that Lin Ran would leave her behind. Therefore, Mo Shuyu’s mind was racing.
“I know. We can go outside. The outpatient building has an outdoor fire escape with iron stairs and railings,” Mo Shuyu said quickly.
Lin Ran nodded at her, her expression softening a little. “Okay, then let’s get out of here. Tell me which way is closer to it.”
“There’s a side door through this hallway. We can go out the side door and walk around the building clockwise for about a quarter of a circle to see the stairs,” Mo Shuyu said, thinking quickly and giving useful answers.
Lin Ran nodded. It seemed her judgment was right. If this Dr. Mo was like that other woman and only screamed when in danger, she would have already abandoned her.
“Okay. Stick close to me. I told you I don’t have the extra energy to take care of you. If you fall behind, I won’t save you. Do you understand?” Lin Ran instructed coldly as she moved toward the side door, as Mo Shuyu had directed. She didn’t even look at Mo Shuyu the whole time.
Mo Shuyu pursed her lips, feeling a mix of emotions. She whispered, “I understand.”
She knew she was a burden to Lin Ran, but Lin Ran’s words were too direct, which made her feel a little embarrassed. But the hospital was already in this state, and the outside world didn’t seem much better. Lin Ran taking her along was already a huge kindness. She had no right to ask for more from Lin Ran.
With that thought, Mo Shuyu took a deep breath, gripped the machete in her hand, and followed Lin Ran.
