“Haaaaah…”

I let out a long, deep sigh as I sat in the vice-captain’s office of the Mage Corps.

“What’s the matter, Rolodroa?

Can’t sleep at night because your wife’s too cute?”

The one asking with a mischievous grin was none other than my boss and the Captain of the Corps, Zen.

“That’s a vulgar thing to say,” I replied bluntly. Besides, it’s not like anything like that had happened.

“Come on, wasn’t she once called the Flower of High Society?

So… how is she, really?”

“Unfortunately, things haven’t progressed to the point where you need to jump to conclusions.”

I answered wearily.

“What!?

Wait a minute—this is coming from you? The man who used to spend one night with a woman and toss her aside the next?

Are you… okay? Like, physically? ”

Zen said, staring at me like I’d lost my mind. Quite the insult.

“Not particularly…”

“…Did you fall for her?”

“I did not. Just… a little…”

“A little what? ”

“I feel… sorry for her.”

She doesn’t even know how to wash dishes. Yet now she lives in my house without any servants. What must her family be thinking, Iwonder? ?”

I said, running a hand through my blond hair.

“Well, from what I hear, they’re having a grand old time throwing balls and banquets, apparently

under the pretense of debuting her younger sister, Lady Sarana.

You know how nobles are—throwing parties is basically part of their job.

Still though…”

His tone didn’t say it, but I could hear it behind the words:
Isn’t that just too cruel?

“But anyway…

Captain, didn’t you have something else to talk about?”

“Another person’s gone missing from the capital,” Zen said quietly. 

Again?

Lately, there’d been some strange incidents. People were getting kidnapped. Strangely, they always came back after two or three days, and even stranger—they had no memory of the time they were gone. The people who returned showed no signs of injury or trauma.  After being monitored for a short period, they were sent home.

“Can you head to the Demonic Forest of Lizanne the day after tomorrow?
There might be a clue.”

Most of the kidnappings happened near dungeons. This latest person probably disappeared in the Forest of Lizanne as well.

I sighed again.
