I Really Didn't Intend to Pick Up the Black Lotus Omega - Chapter 2
The moon hung upside down in the night sky, its light lonely and desolate.
The relentless wail of ambulance sirens pierced through the fine rain, a reminder that hospitals never truly knew a quiet night.
“Doctor! Please save my girlfriend!”
“Is there a doctor here?! Someone, help!”
“Doctor, he slashed his neck with an inhibitor.”
The relentless rain had soaked the world, and the disinfectant in the emergency room carried a damp, musty scent.
As a Beta, Yu Qing couldn’t detect the pheromones being frantically scrubbed from the air by the air processors. Only the red light above the operating room remained steadily lit in her eyes.
Something serious seemed to have happened in the city tonight. Yu Qing sat in the emergency room waiting area, having already witnessed countless individuals whose pheromones had spiraled out of control.
Her gaze drifted to the continuous trail of bloodstains on the tiled floor. Instinctively, she reached down to brush her knee.
Though the warmth that had been desperately pressed against her had gradually turned damp, her hand still remembered the feather-light touch of the person who had held her.
The rain had soaked her to the bone, anchoring her to the roadside and preventing her from being swept away by the wind.
It was as if the operating room door had opened specifically to await Yu Qing’s arrival.
“You’re still here?”
In her memory, the operating room door slid open automatically.
The doctor, seeing Yu Qing sitting outside, looked surprised.
“Mm-hmm,” Yu Qing nodded and stood up, belatedly realizing she could have left after bringing the woman to the hospital.
Upon seeing Yu Qing’s nod, the doctor visibly relaxed, even showing a hint of gratitude. “Thank goodness. Tonight’s chemical plant explosion in East City has affected so many Alphas and Omegas—we’re completely overwhelmed. If you hadn’t stayed, Miss Omega would have been in serious trouble.”
“Is it that bad?” Yu Qing’s attention was drawn by the doctor’s words, completely forgetting her intention to leave.
The doctor sighed and confided, “It’s severe. The chemical plant that exploded in East City tonight was a suppressant factory. The blast radius was extensive, and there was a massive leak of pheromone raw materials. As a neighboring city, many pheromone-sensitive Alphas and Omegas here have been affected.”
Yu Qing gasped. “So she’s one of the Omegas affected by the explosion?”
“Almost certainly,” the doctor nodded. “We detected signs that Miss Omega had been affected by an unknown pheromone, triggering the onset of her heat cycle. Fortunately, she didn’t fully enter heat, or it would have been much more complicated.”
Even as he said this, the doctor earnestly cautioned Yu Qing, “But once Miss Omega wakes up, you should ask her what happened. If this isn’t the cause, you must report it to the police.”
“Rest assured,” Yu Qing nodded, her sense of justice and responsibility burning brightly.
“Then let me brief you on Miss Omega’s condition. I’ll entrust her care to you for now.” The doctor opened his electronic medical records. “Mild concussion, multiple abrasions, and soft tissue contusions. The bl00d on her when she arrived was due to a blunt object lacerating her left forearm, severing a major artery. The bleeding was alarming, but she’s not in life-threatening danger and won’t suffer any long-term complications.”
“Keep the wound dry for the next two days. Maintain a bland diet. Change the dressing every four days. Apply ointment to the soft tissue contusions morning and night…”
As the doctor spoke, Yu Qing diligently typed notes into her memo app.
As Yu Qing finished taking notes, the doctor glanced at her memo and gave a thumbs-up. “Impressive typing speed!”
Yu Qing chuckled. “You have to be quick when you’re coding.”
“Dr. Lu, emergency!”
As he spoke, the emergency communicator on the doctor’s chest began flashing frantically.
The relaxed atmosphere vanished instantly as the doctor turned and sprinted away.
Yu Qing followed his gaze and saw five ambulances parked outside the emergency room, the sight of bl00d staining the scene weighing heavily on her heart.
How could such a severe accident happen?
Sitting quietly by the hospital bed, the question echoed endlessly in her mind.
Outside the door, doctors and nurses rushed about, presumably attending to other victims of the disaster. The hospital room, however, remained calm and orderly, as if in another world.
Yu Qing sighed, the paper she held rustling softly in the breeze. She quickly pressed it down, carefully preserving the fragile tranquility of the moment.
Earlier, while checking in, she had learned that the hospital was still tallying the casualties from the East City factory explosion.
Because Yu Qing wasn’t sure if Miss Omega was one of the affected Omegas or even what her name was, the nurse gave Yu Qing a registration form and asked her to fill it out and return it after confirming the details.
Her name…
Moonlight streamed into the hospital room, bathing the bed Yu Qing was watching over in its pale glow.
Miss Omega was still asleep, her clean face illuminated by the silvery light. Thick bandages wrapped the left half of her face, her expression serene and peaceful, yet hinting at a recent brush with death.
Yu Qing glanced at the registration form in her hand, curious to know the woman’s name.
Could she be the protagonist of some ABO novel?
And what role would I play in her life?
Overly romantic thoughts swirled in Yu Qing’s mind as she slowly rested her chin on her hand by the bedside.
The sparse moonlight cast her cool-toned skin in an almost ethereal glow, too pure to be considered aloof. Yu Qing watched from the side, her fingers reaching out and retracting, tempted to overstep yet unwilling to defile.
This was completely different from the memory of Miss Omega gradually dissolving into the rain.
She had lost so much bl00d that when Yu Qing lifted her, she felt as if she were holding nothing but bones.
The damp, sticky ponytail swished through the air like a puppy’s drooping tail, inexplicably reminding Yu Qing of her deceased dog.
Lianlian…
Just as Yu Qing was about to sink into memories, a pair of baby-blue eyes pierced her gaze.
Miss Omega had awakened.
Her cold, sharp gaze felt like a drawn sword, causing Yu Qing’s heart to pound wildly.
There was nothing more embarrassing than being caught staring.
Yu Qing swallowed hard, barely registering her embarrassment before a cool, clear voice sounded in her ear.
“Where am I?”
Whether the image Yu Qing had just seen was a guilty hallucination or not, she now saw no trace of that sharp aggression in Miss Omega’s eyes.
Instead, those blue irises held a pure, innocent clarity, like the eyes of a newborn chick.
Yu Qing’s heart stirred. Her upturned palm felt as if it had gently landed in a cloud of soft down.
But when she closed her hand, the emptiness reminded her to snap back to reality. She introduced herself, “This is the hospital. You were severely injured. I found you by the roadside and called 120.”
Yu Qing spoke concisely, but Miss Omega looked utterly bewildered.
It was as if… she had no memory of the incident at all.
Come to think of it, the alley had been so dark, and she had been on the verge of death. How could she possibly remember what had happened?
Yu Qing lowered her gaze, feeling inexplicably disappointed.
“I know you saved me, but I… don’t remember how I got hurt.”
Her voice was so lost, as if she were adrift in this rain-soaked world.
She shook her head gently, dispelling Yu Qing’s disappointment, but couldn’t find the anchor point for her own memories.
Her mind was a blank slate.
Yu Qing didn’t see this as a good sign. She quickly began gesturing, trying to jog the other woman’s memory: “Do you remember the factory explosion? The flames, the smoke, the pheromones, the boom?”
Yu Qing stared intently into Miss Omega’s eyes. Those ordinary black eyes suddenly flared with a burst of fire.
Miss Omega clenched her hand, the searing heat of the explosion lingering on her face. She nodded slowly. “I think… I do.”
“Then you must have been caught in the blast from the East City factory explosion.” Relieved that Miss Omega’s injuries weren’t due to something else, Yu Qing let out a sigh of relief.
Yu Qing patted Miss Omega’s shoulder and said, “It’s okay now. It’s all over. You’re safe here.”
Safe.
The woman sitting on the hospital bed silently repeated the word, her eyes vacant as if she didn’t quite grasp its meaning.
Only when Yu Qing’s palm, warm from the cold air, settled on her shoulder did she seem to truly understand what “safe” meant.
Perhaps the feeling of safety never came from the environment itself, but from another person.
Yu Qing, of course, didn’t realize the significance of her casual gesture. She picked up the admission form beside her. “What’s your name? The hospital is compiling a list of affected victims. I can help you fill this out to apply for government assistance later.”
But Yu Qing hadn’t anticipated the long silence that followed her words.
Miss Omega sat quietly on the bed, her delicate eyelashes drooping like a raven’s wings, obscuring the pale blue light in her eyes.
What’s her name…?
—”You remember this! Your name is Jiang Nianyu, and you’re a daughter of the Jiang Family! You must never forget it! If you do, you’ll end up abandoned like me! Do you understand? Do you understand?!”
The woman’s sharp voice cut through the air like a military blade, her fingers digging into Jiang Nianyu’s cheeks, forcing her to remember her name.
Miss Omega—no, Jiang Nianyu—felt a sudden wave of terror, her entire body tensing.
“Ugh…”
She couldn’t remember. Her head throbbed violently.
A groan of pain escaped through the gap between Jiang Nianyu’s lips, the torment weighing heavily on her.
Yu Qing startled at this reaction, but quickly realized the Omega was trapped in a memory-loss-induced headache.
“Don’t force yourself to remember,” Yu Qing said urgently, rising to grasp Jiang Nianyu’s hand. “It’s okay if you don’t have a name.” She tried to stop the lost memories from hurting her.
In that instant, Jiang Nianyu’s racing heartbeat began to slow.
She gradually recovered from the agonizing headache, her gaze fixed on Yu Qing’s hand clasped around her wrist.
Slender, pale, with clearly defined bones.
It was… no, it was the same hand she had seen gripping the umbrella handle before losing consciousness.
Her trembling breath brushed against Yu Qing’s hand, and Yu Qing noticed the corners of Jiang Nianyu’s eyes were tinged with red.
This was the only remaining trace of her recent loss of control.
She calmed down too quickly, as if her emotional programming lacked any excess.
“Then,” Jiang Nianyu paused, asking Yu Qing in a very soft voice, “what’s my name?”
She needed a name, just as a program needs a code name.
Yu Qing pondered for a moment, then blurted out, “Miss Unknown!”
Her mind worked in peculiar ways, and she looked at Jiang Nianyu expectantly. “The doctor said you have a mild concussion. I suspect the amnesia might be related to that. It should clear up in a while. Until you remember your name, I’ll just call you ‘Miss Unknown’ for now.”
“Miss Unknown,” Jiang Nianyu murmured, slowly enunciating each syllable as if savoring the sound between her lips and teeth.
No one knew her name. No one was forcing her to remember what she didn’t want to.
It felt as if a weight had lifted from Jiang Nianyu’s chest, suddenly allowing her to breathe freely.
Unknown was a name too.
“Alright, I’ll go by that name,” Jiang Nianyu nodded to Yu Qing.
Visibly, her eyes seemed to regain some of their earlier vitality.
Yu Qing watched silently, then quietly put away the registration form. “I’ll ask the nurses about the registration tomorrow. Get some rest tonight.”
As she spoke, Yu Qing set up a companion bed beside Jiang Nianyu’s bed.
Jiang Nianyu watched her efficiently spread out the bedding, her anxiety and confusion inexplicably easing.
She nodded to Yu Qing and said, “Okay.”
Rain pattered against the window, sounding like it was striking a transparent umbrella.
The sound clearly didn’t disturb the sleeping occupants of the ward. Yu Qing’s even breathing soon blended into the deep slumber of the room.
Only one person remained awake.
In the pitch-black ward, Jiang Nianyu slowly opened her eyes.
She turned her head, her gaze, like the moon outside the window, silently climbing across Yu Qing’s face.
The other woman was sleeping soundly, her breathing steady, lips slightly parted.
She was hugging a pillow, her cheek pressed against it, looking completely unguarded.
In Jiang Nianyu’s usually still eyes, confusion and bewilderment flickered, like raindrops streaking across a window, causing her brow to furrow slightly.
Hospitals were the cleanest places in the city, where all pheromone scents were washed away.
Yet why had the scent lingering between this Beta’s lips been so impossible to ignore since she woke up?
I really want to taste it.
