Chapter 147: The Weakest of the Four Heavenly Kings
(Note: Special for this chapter, Jeanne and Jest’s telepathic voice is in ‘…’)
“Whoa!! That’s amazing!!”
Simon had just experienced the rare sensation of flying in this world. He was excitedly gazing at the scenery, as if he had forgotten the earlier impact from the powerful blow. The view felt like something from the observation deck of a TV tower. While I wasn’t as thrilled by it, gripping the exposed spikes made the experience quite thrilling.
“Don’t get so excited that you fall! Also, don’t let your guard down—there’s always a chance the minions of the Evil God might appear!”
“I know, I know!”
‘You seem rather calm up here, Master. It’s as if you’re used to being in the sky.’
Jeanne’s impressed voice echoed in my mind. I figure I’ll tell her about it one day. But with Simon here, now’s not the time.
“Not really. I’m more focused on the Evil God’s base and possible attacks right now.”
It wouldn’t be strange if an attack came at any moment. Somewhere within this view, there should be the base. As I scanned the surroundings, I noticed an area where trees weren’t growing unnaturally.
“Jeanne, could Jest’s father’s presence be coming from that treeless area?”
‘Well… the presence is too faint to be certain. However, I can sense something else from that area… no, it’s coming.’
“Simon! There’s a chance of an attack! Be on guard!”
“Huh?!”
Still gripping Jest’s spike with his left hand, Simon hurriedly placed his right hand on the hilt of his weapon. Though, even I couldn’t see the attackers yet.
‘Here they come.’
As Jeanne said this, she turned her head slightly and briefly stopped moving.
“Whoa!! That’s amazing!!”
Simon shouted in awe, just like when we moved up into the sky. From my perspective, Jeanne’s neck blocked my view. So I had no idea what had just happened.
“Simon! What happened!?”
“A group of Griffons just showed up! There was even a huge mutated one. But it got blasted in one shot by a dragon’s breath!!”
“A group of Griffons!?”
I recalled that one of the Four Heavenly Kings (I think?) was a mutated Griffon, with the line, “He’s the weakest of the Four Heavenly Kings.” Could it have been that Griffon?
‘Mom, you’re amazing!’
‘For someone of my caliber, those creatures are no more than pesky insects, hohoho!’
Jest’s dragon breath was impressive. But if it was Jeanne, it must’ve been even more powerful. If she took down the whole group in one shot, it must’ve covered quite a large area.
‘Master, let’s head toward where they came from.’
“Got it.”
As we descended in a glide, I could see the place where Jeanne had unleashed her breath. The treeless area had expanded, and the edges had turned black with char. While the ground looked like it had melted. However, amidst the melted ground, several pillars stood upright.
“Those pillars… even Jeanne’s breath couldn’t melt them?”
‘It might be the ancient ruins Jest’s father mentioned. They’re said to be extremely durable, possibly containing a temple that seals something related to the Evil God…’
Now that I think about it, there were ruins in the Taleraan Margrave, where a fragment of the Evil God was found. If this place also had a large temple and the Evil God was sealed here, it all starts to make sense. We landed on the scorched, hardened ground, which had turned glass-like from the heat. If it were summer, it might’ve been too hot to land.
“Ugh… My stomach feels weird, like it’s floating… How come the Captain seems fine?”
Simon stumbled off Jest, looking at me with complaints. I had felt a slight floating sensation, like during airplane landings or an elevator drop. But it wasn’t that bad.
“Since we’re not flying by flapping wings, it’s smoother than riding a horse or carriage, wasn’t it?”
“Yeah, that’s it! I was really surprised when I actually rode it! How does it even fly?”
“Dragons usually fly using magic. The wings are mostly just for balance.”
It was Jeanne, in her human form, who answered Simon’s question. It seems even she found her large size difficult to handle in the forest, as Jest had also shifted into his human form.
“Father…”
Jest muttered softly, staring at the ground as if sensing his father’s presence more strongly now. Seeing him like this reminded me of Hinata from my previous life, struggling to process the death of his father. It made my chest ache.
“If he’s still alive, we can save him. Let’s hurry and find your father.”
“Yeah!”
As I was patting Jest’s head, Simon drew his sword.
“Captain, it looks like we’ve got company.”
“Heh… you noticed well. That dragon over there, how dare you turn my comrades into ashes.”
Emerging from the shadows of the charred trees was a beautiful woman with a bare upper body and the lower body of a snake—a Lamia.
“Wow! She’s a real beauty! But Jeanne’s prettier. Besides, she’s got a snake’s lower half.”
Simon held his sword ready and whistled. I agreed with him. But because of that unnecessary comment, the Lamia’s previously smug smile twisted in anger. Her massive snake tail, as thick as a log, shot toward Simon.
“You insolent human! I’ll strangle you to death!!”
