- Chapter 14 - Defeating the Blood Bear and Unlocking a New Skill
With a thunderous rumble, the massive Bl00d Bear emerged from the shadows. It seemed to have tracked Ash by following the scent of bl00d—its favorite prey.
“Aah! M-my sister!”
Ash cried out in despair.
The Bl00d Bear was gripping a young girl tightly in its monstrous claws. The sheer force of its grip had left her unconscious.
“This… isn’t good,” I muttered.
Having a hostage was an unexpected complication.
In this world brought to life from a game, unpredictable situations like this were bound to occur.
Because Ash’s sister was in danger, Selvia’s Albidus Fire couldn’t be used against the Bl00d Bear. Worse still…
“Cain-niisama! That girl is being drained of bl00d!”
A grotesque appendage extended from the Bl00d Bear’s back, wrapping around the girl’s body and piercing her flesh. The pulsating appendage was actively draining her bl00d.
At this rate, Ash’s sister wouldn’t survive more than a few minutes.
Even worse, the act of feeding had triggered buffs, significantly increasing the Bl00d Bear’s stats and making it even more formidable.
“Gwoooaaahhh!”
The Bl00d Bear roared and unleashed a special attack, Flying Claw, firing its sharp claws like bullets.
“Both of you, stay back! I’ll handle this!”
I stepped forward, shielding Selvia and Ash.
My skill, Projectile Deflection, increased the success rate of deflecting projectiles by 50%. Combined with the enhanced accuracy from Swordsmanship Level 3, I could effectively neutralize most ranged attacks.
“Haaaa!”
I swung my sword and deflected the claws midair, sending them flying harmlessly to the side.
“Whoa! That’s incredible—you’re amazing, Cain!” Ash exclaimed.
“Not ‘you.’ Call me Cain,” I corrected him.
“Oh… Cain!”
Ash looked at me in awe, but I didn’t have time to focus on him.
The Bl00d Bear roared again and charged directly at me.
The sheer force and presence of the monster were overwhelming. If not for my sparring sessions with Lancelot, I would have been completely paralyzed with fear.
To protect Selvia and Ash, I steeled myself and stepped forward to face it.
“Cain-niisama, this is reckless!” Selvia cried out.
“I’ll be fine! I can handle this!” I assured her.
The Bl00d Bear’s attack patterns were clear. At long range, it relied on Flying Claw. Up close, it almost always opened with a powerful downward swing of its right arm.
The best way to evade this attack was to sidestep to its left.
“Graaahhh!”
The creature’s massive claw slammed down, but I smoothly dodged to the side.
“Hmph!”
Seizing the opportunity, I countered with a slash to its exposed side. Its thick, armor-like fur absorbed some of the impact, but the dark attribute damage from Blade of the Black Moon burned its flesh, leaving a charred wound.
The Bl00d Bear howled in agony.
“Whoa… that’s incredible!” Ash gasped in amazement.
I prepared for a follow-up strike, aiming for the weak spot—the chest. A critical hit there would deal massive damage.
But just as I swung, the Bl00d Bear did the unexpected: it used the girl as a shield.
“Dammit!”
I pulled back my sword just in time to avoid harming her.
Taking advantage of my hesitation, the Bl00d Bear slammed me with its massive arm.
“Guh!”
The impact rattled my entire body, and I was sent flying. My vision blurred as I bounced off the ground, pain surging through me.
“Cain-niisama!”
Selvia’s anguished cry reached my ears.
The Bl00d Bear charged at me, ready to deliver the finishing blow.
But before it could reach me, vines and roots burst from the ground, wrapping tightly around the monster and halting its advance.
“I won’t let you harm Cain-niisama!”
Selvia’s Saint of the World Tree ability activated, commanding the plants around us to restrain the Bl00d Bear.
“She’s controlling plants?! How is that even possible?!” Ash exclaimed, his eyes wide with disbelief.
“No chanting… this surpasses even unique skills! Could she be…?”
It seemed Ash had realized Selvia’s true identity.
Damn it… this was my fault. If only I were stronger…
Despite the pain and dizziness, I reached into my pouch, pulled out a High-Potency Healing Potion (Ex-Potion), and drank it. Warmth spread through my body, mending my injuries as if they had never existed.
Meanwhile, the Bl00d Bear roared and tore through the vines restraining it.
“Ugh!”
Selvia was doing her best, but she hadn’t yet fully mastered her powers as a saint. The monster’s sheer strength was too much.
However, the vines had slowed its movements significantly.
I could do this.
“Haaaahhhh!”
I pushed off the ground and charged forward with all my strength.
The Bl00d Bear was caught off guard, surprised to see me moving so swiftly after the blow it had dealt.
Circling behind it, I slashed through the appendage draining the girl’s bl00d.
“Gwoaaaahhh!”
The creature roared in agony, thrashing wildly. I dodged its flailing arms and caught the girl as she fell.
The correct move here, as I remembered from the game, was to dodge low under its attacks.
“Selvia, take care of her!”
“Understood!”
Selvia’s vines gently wrapped around the unconscious girl, pulling her to safety.
“My sister!” Ash cried, his voice trembling with relief.
“Now, there’s nothing holding me back!”
With the hostage secured, I unleashed a barrage of slashes, striking the Bl00d Bear relentlessly. There was no need to hold back anymore.
“Gwoooaahhh!”
The monster’s attacks became desperate, but I had already memorized its patterns. None of its strikes landed.
Dark flames erupted from its body where my blade struck, consuming its flesh and causing it to crumble. The true destructive power of darkness was on full display.
“Selvia, help me finish this!”
“Understood, Cain-niisama! Albidus Fire!”
Selvia’s flames engulfed the Bl00d Bear, forcing it to writhe in agony. Its defenses faltered, exposing its chest—its weak spot.
I drove my blade deep into its heart with all my strength. The dark energy of Blade of the Black Moon consumed its core, destroying it completely.
With a final roar, the Bl00d Bear collapsed to the ground.
“We did it! Cain-niisama!”
Selvia’s jubilant cheer echoed through the forest.
It was a hard-fought victory, one we had earned together.
Ding!
“You have defeated a monster 30 levels above you.”
“Congratulations!”
“Skill unlocked: Giant Killing.
“When fighting enemies with higher levels, if your HP drops below 50%, your attack power and agility increase by 100%.”
