I Supported My Fiancé for 10 Years After He Said, 'Let's Get Married When I Succeed,' but When He Finally Did, He Dumped Me. By the Way, I'm a Witch and Turning 30 Next Year!! - Episode 6
The shop was originally a tavern, and it seems that the herb witch only requested renovations and then left it abandoned for several years.
It seems she had planned to open a shop in the holy city, but determined that it would be too physically demanding for her.
To my surprise, the herbal witch gave me the shop for free.
In exchange, I agreed to take care of Merv Maple, but the contract with the spirit was more of a reward for me.
Merv Maple works hard, assisting with my alchemy and also taking charge of producing herbal soap.
In addition to helping at the shop, she also keeps watch over the pharmacy at night. I can’t thank her enough.
So, together with Merv Maple and the Dryad, I opened the “Herbal Witch’s Pharmacy.”
In this area, magical medicines are only available through the guild, so there were no competing stores.
However, due to the mysteriousness of it being a witch’s shop, no customers came. I should have named the shop something friendlier, like “Smiling Pharmacy.”
For a while, I made a living selling magical medicine to the guild, but then a change came.
“Do you think the reason customers started coming was because of your meeting with Ie?”
It was about a month after opening the pharmacy. I had just stepped out of the store and into an alley when I found a person lying on the ground.
He had a tattered cloak over him like a blanket, shivering from the cold.
When I quickly asked if he was okay, he weakly responded, “I’m just resting, so please don’t worry about me.”
His cheeks were gaunt, his glasses fogged, and his eyes, peering through, looked vacant. His skin had a sickly color. It was clear he was unwell and close to death, so I couldn’t just leave him there. I gave him some of the nutritional supplements from the pharmacy.
At first, he hesitated, but after I told him that I would feel terrible if something happened to him, he accepted them. As soon as he took the supplement, he quickly regained strength.
Impressed by the effect, the man started coming to the pharmacy regularly.
Soon, a few more customers started to appear. It seemed that many had seen the moment when the man, who had collapsed, suddenly became healthy again.
That must have acted as advertisement. Sales began to steadily increase.
“So that man who was lying on the ground was Ie?”
“Did that really happen?”
“It sure did.”
I wonder what kind of work environment he was in that had him working so hard that he collapsed in the street. He definitely worked for the Ministry of Holy Affairs, though.
Ie, who was responsible for this meeting, did something amazing for me. He began purchasing around 100 herbal soaps a month for use at the Ministry of Holy Affairs.
Thanks to this, the pharmacy’s business flourished, and people who used the soap at work started coming to the shop.
“I can’t even begin to express how grateful I am for that soap contract.”
“I’m happy to have been of help.”
It seems that the corruption of the soap supplier had just been discovered, and they were looking for a new vendor.
“The herbal soap sample the shopkeeper gave me was really good.”
Thanks to Ie, herbal soap became the pharmacy’s main product.
From then on, I spent my days mixing magical medicines, gathering materials in the forest, and working at the shop.
During this time, I also made daily meals for Rymer, did the housework, and continued to listen to his stories.
A change came at some point.
Rymer began staying out more often, either due to an upcoming promotion exam or work obligations.
Even on his days off, he was out more often, and the time we spent together decreased significantly.
But I believed these actions were necessary for his career, and I never doubted that.
“And then, Rymer told me he had something to report. I was sure it would be good news—I thought he’d finally been promoted.”
I came home filled with expectations, but the reality that awaited was cruel.
“Rymer said he was going to marry Saint Sui and become her personal knight.”
Becoming the personal knight of the saint was an incredible honor. It was the kind of promotion everyone would envy.
“He said that he was able to achieve promotion thanks to Saint Sui and that what he couldn’t accomplish in ten years with me, she made happen in a short time.”
“That’s not true. His promotion was only possible because of your support for ten years. Without you, he wouldn’t even have become a holy knight.”
“Do you really think so?”
“Absolutely! There’s no doubt about it!”
Normally calm, Ie spoke with unusual firmness.
“He’ll regret this someday! It’s unforgivable to break off an engagement with such a wonderful woman!”
“Ie… thank you.”
I can’t imagine that Rymer will ever regret breaking off our engagement. Ie is kind, so of course, she would say this.
After all, his new fiancée is the renowned Saint.
She has radiant youth, beauty, and status.
From here on, Rymer will never have to struggle as a holy knight. He’ll be able to lead a glorious life.
“I guess even a hundred years of love can fade… I’ve learned that I had no judgment when it came to men.”
Perhaps it’s a blessing that I realized this before marriage.
At least now I know that Rymer was only using me as a source of wealth.
“If it were like this, maybe I should have married the man I met in early summer when I was eighteen.”
“Did you have someone like that?”
“Yes… though I didn’t know his face or name well.”
I met him on the same night that Rymer and I debuted in high society.
Every autumn, my territory was attacked by wyverns, and the livestock was eaten, causing great damage.
Despite my father’s repeated requests for knights to be sent, nothing was done, and we could only cry over the damage.
I decided to directly appeal to the knights and brought a report of the damage and a petition to a party.
I first asked Rymer, but he dismissed it, saying it was impossible.
He was only a common knight, so perhaps he couldn’t help.
But I didn’t give up.
I surveyed the party and, gathering my courage, approached the most decorated holy knight.
The holy knight was covered in armor from head to toe, so I couldn’t even see his face. The pressure was overwhelming.
But I knew such an opportunity would never come again, so I made my request.
To my surprise, instead of saying it was impossible, he said, “I will consider it.”
A while later, the holy knight came alone to my territory.
“He single-handedly defeated the wyvern.”
Covered in the wyvern’s bl00d, his white armor turned red, making him look eerie. The people in the territory were scared.
But he was a hero for defeating the wyvern.
I expressed my gratitude and invited him to my mansion.
He didn’t take off his armor, so I assumed he was a shy person, as my mother had said.
“That holy knight didn’t speak much, but he really listened to me.”
When I told him I was still living at home and hadn’t married yet, he unexpectedly said, “Will you marry me?”
He was the second son of the noble Creblek family, a member of the royal family. He had been forced into an arranged marriage with a woman he didn’t know, but he preferred to marry someone like me, who was easygoing.
“I appreciated his proposal, but I thought I wasn’t the kind of person who could marry into a noble family, so I turned him down.”
“I see.”
If I had married Lord Creblek back then, would my future have been different?
“But it’s all in the past now.”
“I don’t think it’s over yet…”
“Huh?”
“Never mind.”
After talking it all out, I realized just how terrible Rymer had been, and I knew I could never forgive him.
But I didn’t want to get revenge; I just had this overwhelming frustration, so it felt good to get it off my chest.
“Enough of this gloomy talk! Let’s have some wine!”
“Yes, let’s!”
And so, Ie and I started our little drinking party.
