I Transmigrated as a Scumbag Alpha and Became a Good Wife - Chapter 10
As if guided by some unseen force, Xu Xi tentatively hooked her pinky finger around Su Wenxun’s, just like they used to do as children when making promises with Wanwan. This simple gesture visibly brightened the Alpha’s eyes. Even without a word, Xu Xi could sense Su Wenxun’s elation.
She’s actually seeking praise, Xu Xi thought, marveling at how different this was from the decisive Alpha she’d seen earlier. What a childish fool.
The rest of the meal proceeded harmoniously on the surface. Afterward, Xu Xi kept her earlier promise and offered to show Su Wenxun around the estate.
The sky hadn’t yet darkened, and a gentle breeze carried the fragrance of unknown flowers. With no annoying Xu family members in sight and her wife strolling shoulder to shoulder beside her, Su Wenxun felt this was the most relaxed moment she’d had since transmigrating into the novel.
The sound of flowing water drifted from nearby. At the center of the shimmering fountain pool stood a graceful statue of a Greek goddess. Silk draped over her voluptuous form, the sculptor’s artistry so exquisite that even the fabric’s delicate folds were meticulously replicated. The hard white marble seemed to soften under the craftsman’s touch. The statue cradled a water jar, from which water cascaded, splashing silver-white droplets across the surface.
Xu Xi paused briefly as she reached this spot, then quickly resumed walking as if nothing had happened. But Su Wenxun, who was beside her, noticed the hesitation. Instead of keeping pace, she gently tugged Xu Xi’s wrist and sat down on the fountain’s edge. “Wife, let’s rest for a bit.”
They sat close to the fountain, the cool mist spraying around them, perfectly balanced to cool the air without wetting their clothes.
“When did you learn table manners?” Xu Xi asked, finally voicing her lingering doubt when they were alone. In her memory, “Su Wenxun” had never possessed such impeccable table manners—flawless, with not a single mistake.
The fountain’s water shimmered in clear turquoise. Su Wenxun dipped her hand into the flowing water, letting it cascade between her fingers, her expression relaxed. She didn’t answer directly. “Wife, did you know? I was completely different as a child. I was just a wild girl running around the countryside, my skin tanned dark by the sun, so ugly it was almost comical. I loved water, but maybe I was cursed in a past life. Whenever I got near it, I’d always lose control and fall in.”
Smiling, Su Wenxun continued, “But one day, this wild girl was discovered to have some use after all. She was thrown into the ‘water,’ while the people on the shore watched her struggle, eager to see her sink to the bottom.
But the wild girl knew that to survive in the ‘water,’ she had to keep surfacing again and again.
In the end, she didn’t drown. Instead, the ‘water’ completely washed away her original appearance.
Wife, I’ve answered your question. Can you tell me about some of the happy times you had with the Xu family?”
The Alpha’s words were casual, but a desolate look flickered in her eyes, like dark, unseen depths beneath the water’s surface, only occasionally revealed when the surface rippled.
Xu Xi frowned, unable to understand why her heart ached faintly. For once, she lowered her guard against Su Wenxun, whom she had always been wary of.
“When my mother was still alive, she would hold my hand and bring me here on rainy days. We loved watching the raindrops fall into the spring and the misty, rain-soaked air,” Xu Xi said, her eyes filled with happiness as she drifted into memories.
“Back then, Mom would collect the flowers that had been knocked down by the rain, and we’d race to see who could toss them into the stone statue’s water jar first. I was little and loved the sparkling ring on her finger. She promised that if I won, she’d give me the ring as a reward. But I was too weak and never managed to beat her.”
Su Wenxun listened quietly, enjoying hearing Xu Xi talk about herself. “What happened next? Did you ever win, Wife?”
“Out of all those races, I only won once.”
“Then why have I never seen you wear that ring?”
Xu Xi paused, glancing at her bare hand. She slowly shook her head. “The time I won was when Mom was sick and too weak to even lift her arm properly. In the end, I held her hand and we tossed the flower into the jar together. I never saw the ring again after that day. Maybe it got lost.”
The Omega spoke casually, her tone calm. “It was just a little thing. It doesn’t matter if it’s gone.”
But Su Wenxun knew Xu Xi’s personality well. She rarely took things to heart, which meant this ring held a significance far beyond its apparent insignificance. It was definitely more than just a casual loss.
“Wife, I’ll help you find it.”
Splash!
Suddenly, Su Wenxun plunged into the fountain!
Xu Xi shot to her feet, remembering Su Wenxun’s earlier admission about not being a strong swimmer. “Don’t bother looking,” she called out. “You won’t find it. This fountain is regularly maintained, and no one has ever seen a ring here before.”
But there was no response, only the sound of flowing water.
Time seemed to freeze. Even the sound of the water now felt chaotic, like frantic ripples spreading through Xu Xi’s heart, growing larger with each passing moment.
“Su Wenxun, come back!”
Still no sign of the Alpha. Xu Xi kicked off her high heels.
One thought consumed her:Â Su Wenxun can’t die.
The instant Xu Xi’s bare foot touched the fountain’s edge, the water surface crashed open!
Su Wenxun burst from the water, a small object gleaming in her hand under the fountain’s reflection. But the radiant smile on her face outshone even that light.
“Wife, I found it!”
In the next instant, the Alpha dove back into the water, moving with the effortless grace of a mermaid. In the blink of an eye, she was back at Xu Xi’s side.
Taking the Omega’s hand, Su Wenxun gently and reverently slipped the ring onto her finger.
The cool touch of the ring contrasted sharply with the warmth of her skin, adding a noticeable weight to her left middle finger. Xu Xi lowered her gaze, her eyes drawn to the supple vine-like band that coiled around her finger, a ruby-carved rose blooming at her knuckle.
She reached out to touch it, but her hand froze mid-air. The sixteen years she had lost and regained left her feeling disoriented.
“Wife, why are you crying again?”
Her eyes stung and swelled. With a blink, large tears rolled down Xu Xi’s cheeks. “Just got splashed by the fountain.”
Seeing Xu Xi’s tears, Su Wenxun’s fingers hovered mere millimeters from the Omega’s cheek. She slowed her breathing, ultimately refraining from touching her.
Wife hates Alpha touches.
Suppressing the urge to wipe away her tears, Su Wenxun withdrew her hand. Xu Xi, oblivious to the Alpha’s movement, turned her face slightly, wanting to hide her vulnerability.
Instead, her cheek pressed directly into Su Wenxun’s palm.
Both froze.
The fountain’s lights suddenly illuminated, refracting through the water to create a dazzling display that bloomed like fireworks against the night sky. The Alpha’s silhouette was reflected in Xu Xi’s eyes, merging with the radiant spectacle.
She gazed at Su Wenxun. “This ring is very important to me. Thank you, Su Wenxun.”
Su Wenxun didn’t reply, but gently stroked Xu Xi’s cheek.
