- Chapter 10 - Stinky Brat
In the original book, maybe at this point, Ling Yuexi really didn’t have any medicine.
The quarantine zones were divided into 18 major districts by danger level—the higher the number, the more dangerous it was.
Over the past few years, all kinds of powers had explored the area, sweeping up all the resources. Now, only Zones 15 to 18 remained untouched.
And with Hong Xiu Zhao’s current strength, it was hard to say if they could handle it. Not to mention, Ling Yuexi was a real Omega.
When Su Cheng first transmigrated and took on her first mission—exploring Zone 13—Longyu had sent an S-class and two A-class Alphas, along with a team of dozens.
Was there no strength available to explore the infected zones? No wonder they kept resorting to robbery.
Su Cheng knew that even without medicine, Ling Yuexi wouldn’t die. She would just slowly turn into that bloodthirsty, violent person from the book.
But… there was another way.
“Longyu has medicine,” she said. After all, they were the strongest force in the book. Their tech might be a bit lacking, but they had tons of supplies.
Hu Ziyuan gave her a loud slap on the back and laughed. “Good kid! I was thinking the same thing! Let’s go stake them out and rob them!”
“Wait, wait! You got it wrong—” Su Cheng quickly stopped her.
Was she supposed to rob her own organization? Was she crazy?
Hu Ziyuan had already taken two steps when she suddenly froze and frowned. “Got it wrong? Then what do you mean?”
“Well…” Su Cheng turned her back, clasped her hands behind her, and began weaving her tale.
“I used to be with Longyu, so I know the place well. Instead of gambling on a robbery, I can sneak back in and grab some meds. If we don’t find what we need, it’s just wasted effort.”
As she said this, something clicked in her mind. Could it be… that in the original book, they kept robbing Longyu again and again because of Ling Yuexi?
Hu Ziyuan’s frown slowly relaxed. She clapped her hands in realization. “That’s true! Your idea’s way better. Let’s prep and move out tomorrow.”
That night, Su Cheng came by again to bring dinner to Ling Yuexi.
These past few days, Su Cheng had been cooking most of the meals herself. She didn’t expect Hong Xiu Zhao to have a farm at the foot of the mountain. On a whim, she’d made some homey dishes—surprisingly, Ling Yuexi actually ate them.
The room was dimly lit by a few candles. The two of them sat quietly at the table, eating in silence.
Ling Yuexi took a small sip of porridge, her eyes flickering, and casually asked, “I heard you and Ziyuan are going out tomorrow?”
Her voice was like a clear spring, her tone light. But somehow, Su Cheng could hear a trace of suspicion behind those words.
Her heart pounded with anticipation. The piece of food she’d just picked up dropped right onto the table.
That big mouth Hu Ziyuan—what nonsense did she blurt out? Ling Yuexi was so sensitive about Longyu. If she suspected something…
“Haha, me and Ziyuan are just going to check the fields at the foot of the mountain. You’re still not fully recovered, so you better rest at home,” Su Cheng said, poking at her food, avoiding eye contact.
Ling Yuexi’s eyes narrowed slightly. Her spoon paused midair as her voice dropped coldly. “Ziyuan? She’s come such a long way in just a few days. You’ve got quite the charm.”
Why is she upset again…?
Su Cheng’s eyes spun as she put on a smile. “But no one’s closer to me than you, right, Xixi?”
Ling Yuexi gave a cold snort. “Sweet talker.”
The next afternoon, Hu Ziyuan was all geared up and waiting at the mountain gate. From far away, she saw Su Cheng limping along slowly with her cane, turning back every few steps like she had something to hide.
“What are you doing? We haven’t even started, and you already look shady!”
Su Cheng frowned. Something just didn’t feel right. “I can’t explain it… but I’ve had a weird feeling all day.”
“Enough already. Let’s go. If we leave now, it’ll be dark by the time we reach Longyu,” Hu Ziyuan said, swinging her backpack over her shoulder and heading out first.
They got in the armored vehicle. Su Cheng sat in the passenger seat, stowed her cane, and glanced suspiciously at the divider behind them.
She didn’t remember it being there last time…
“Hey, are you sure you’re okay with that leg?”
Snapped out of her thoughts, Su Cheng replied calmly, “No problem. I know the gate guard—he’s the one who helped me escape back then.”
Hu Ziyuan nodded. “Then you better thank him properly.” She turned the wheel, and they rolled out of the base.
The sun was setting, casting the mountains in warm light.
Su Cheng leaned against the window, quietly memorizing the path down the mountain.
After they passed through a peach grove, the car entered the wilderness.
Hu Ziyuan gave her a sidelong glance, teasing, “Didn’t know you cared so much about our boss~”
Hm?
Su Cheng looked straight ahead, lips curled up. “Of course. She’s someone I like, after all.”
It wasn’t about caring; it was about using bait to catch the wolf.
“Oh right. Stop the car a bit farther from the base later. I’ll go in alone.”
“Got it!”
After a long drive through the wasteland, Long Xiao Palace finally came into view.
Enemy hiding in plain sight. They really knew where Longyu was.
Then Su Cheng asked, “When we left, Yuexi was still in her room, right?” The back of her neck had felt cold the whole way here…
Hu Ziyuan grinned smugly. “Relax. I had Pupu watch her—”
“Surprise!”
“!!!”
“!!!”
The two of them jumped nearly out of their seats.
Hu Ziyuan slammed the brakes, eyes wide as she looked toward the backseat.
The divider slowly lowered… revealing a beautiful, cold face.
Ling Yuexi leaned back in her seat, arms crossed, long legs elegantly crossed, one foot tapping lazily.
“Far down the mountain?”
The air froze. Of the four in the car, only Pupu seemed alive, poking at the two petrified people in front.
Su Cheng’s neck stiffened. She didn’t dare turn around. Her scalp prickled like she was being shot full of arrows.
Heavens!
No wonder she’d been feeling uneasy all this time—turns out, there was a goddess riding in the backseat!
Her eyes blinked once. She couldn’t help but glance at the rearview mirror.
A pair of green-blue eyes stared straight at her.
Hu Ziyuan’s panic morphed into righteous indignation. She immediately pointed to Su Cheng. “It’s all her! I had nothing to do with it!”
???
Bleeding from the betrayal, Su Cheng: Where’s my fruit knife?! I’m going to slice this fox woman up!
Ling Yuexi sneered. “You’d better have a good explanation.”
Explanation? Hu Ziyuan raised an eyebrow. Since when did she ever listen to explanations?
Su Cheng blinked, put on a goofy smile, and turned around. “Well… we were just going for a little joyride. Then we were going to come right back…”
Ling Yuexi just stared at her silently and was obviously not convinced.
After three seconds, Su Cheng’s smile faded. She looked seriously into Ling Yuexi’s eyes, leaned in, and said softly, “Chased us all the way out here when you’re still sick… you must really like sticking to me, huh?”
By now, the sunset had faded. A pale moon glowed faintly through the thin clouds.
Their eyes met. Ling Yuexi’s gaze wavered. She turned her head to escape the heat in Su Cheng’s look. “Ziyuan, you talk.”
Hu Ziyuan was dumbfounded. Wait, that actually worked?!
In the end, she explained everything honestly.
“So you’re going to Longyu?” Ling Yuexi’s voice was quiet and thoughtful.
Su Cheng explained, “They’ve got all kinds of medicine—many spiritual herbs and some really effective inhibitors too. TheThese are far more effective than the ones you’re currently using. ones you’re currently using. They’ve also got pills and capsules… we can grab a few while we’re there.”
Then she slung her pack on and looked outside. “You three stay hidden and keep the car quiet. I’ll sneak in alone.”
Just as she opened the car door, Ling Yuexi suddenly grabbed her sleeve. “You’re close with the gate guard?”
“Uh… yeah. I just need to talk to him.”
“Then tell him to pretend he didn’t see us.”
“U-Us…?” A dark cloud loomed over Su Cheng’s heart.
Ling Yuexi smirked. “What? You think I can’t walk better than you?”
Boom—sudden downpour.
“Right!” Hu Ziyuan slapped her thigh. “I’m coming too! Just tell the guard not to see me either.”
Lightning. Thunder. Torrential rain.
Ling Yuexi grabbed her gun and got out of the car. “It’s settled. Pupu, watch the car.”
“Okay~”
Su Cheng tried to protest. “You’re still sick—”
Before she could finish, Hu Ziyuan clapped a hand over her mouth and pulled her aside. “Just take her and hurry! If she goes nuts here, we’re all done for!”
“……”
Su Cheng, drenched in metaphorical rain, had no choice but to lead them toward Longyu.
With less than twenty meters to go, she suddenly stopped.
“What is it?” Ling Yuexi asked, already masked up, voice soft and cute.
Su Cheng took a deep breath and turned to the others. “You two stay here. Let me check if the guard is still the same guy. If it’s all clear, I’ll come get you.”
Hu Ziyuan nodded. “Sounds excellent. Go.”
Su Cheng finally relaxed. Yes! Mission complete!
But as soon as she turned around and took one step—
Her sleeve was yanked back again.
“One quarter of an hour,” came the stubborn, childish voice. “Or I’ll come in myself.”
Come in? What, walk into the enemy’s net?
Su Cheng didn’t turn around. She almost laughed.
But the grip on her sleeve was unexpectedly strong.
She acted like a stubborn little brat, feigning fierceness to mask her worry—all for the sake of hearing a promise.
Suddenly, her legs felt heavy. Those words she’d mocked now caught in her throat.
She sighed softly inside.
After a while, she turned back, raised her hand, and gently ruffled the “stinky kid’s” hair.
“Ten minutes.”
Ling Yuexi finally let go.
Hu Ziyuan watched the whole thing silently; her expression was unreadable.
The guards at Longyu definitely recognized Su Cheng—especially with that distinctive mark between her brows.
As soon as she got inside, Su Cheng ditched her “careful” gait, grabbed her cane, and hopped one-legged toward the nearest soldier…
