- Chapter 18 - Master of Human Silhouettes
Ling Yuexi, as described in the original novel, could be summed up with just two phrases: moody and utterly insane.
Reading about her in the book was one thing—the words felt hollow, lacking any real weight.
But now, Su Cheng was experiencing it firsthand once again.
Just yesterday, they were all lovey-dovey and sweet as sugar. Today, in the blink of an eye, she was pointing a gun at her. Yuexi’s mood flipping faster than pages in a book.
The moment she landed, Su Cheng was so startled that her knees gave out, and she collapsed straight to the ground.
“……”
“…Have mercy, Your Majesty.” Her brain short-circuited, and somehow, those words just slipped right out.
But… in this moment, she really did feel what it meant to serve by the emperor’s side like living with a tiger.
A peerless consort, favored for a few days, thought she had charmed the emperor—only to find she was never truly in her heart. To her, she was just a toy: pampered when she was pleased, discarded—or killed—when angered.
Everything Ling Yuexi did was dictated by mood, utterly unrestrained.
What a truly unpredictable and ruthless sovereign.
The more she thought, the more wronged she felt. Su Cheng covered her face and sobbed, “I’ve been so wrongly accused, Your Majesty! It’s all that wretch Hu Ziyuan’s fault…”
Wronged?
Ling Yuexi let out a cold laugh. “Your silver tongue is good for lying. First you got close to me, then to Ziyuan. Just what exactly are you after?”
The room was dimly lit, with only a single candle flickering. Ling Yuexi stood by the wooden table, where scattered gun parts lay—a pistol that had been taken apart. Beside them sat a basket of peaches.
They were freshly picked from the peach grove down the mountain. People from Red Sleeve would bring some to Ling Yuexi from time to time, but Su Cheng had never seen her actually eat one.
Her room looked the same as before. Even though she’d looted quite a few things last time, aside from the original Chaofeng’s knife, there seemed to be nothing new.
Su Cheng’s heart began to pound. She couldn’t believe this woman was still suspicious of her. She’d sacrificed so much—dragging a bum leg and still sneaking into enemy territory! All that effort, all that risk—didn’t that earn her a wave of favor?
But facing the demon queen in a foul mood, any attempt to explain would probably just make things worse—it’d sound like making excuses.
So she decided to flip the script.
“You could tell I was scheming?” Su Cheng calmed herself, raised her eyes to meet those jade-like ones, and curled her lips into a wicked smile. “Since you’re so clever, how about guessing my true intention?”
Ling Yuexi’s brows furrowed. A pressure rose in her chest, and her face turned even colder. “You’d better know what you’re saying.”
“What’s wrong? Can’t you guess, or don’t want to?” Su Cheng took her time getting up, sauntering forward with a sultry smile. She only stopped when the gun’s muzzle touched her chest.
“My goal—wasn’t it you all along?”
Her gaze softened as she stared at the woman before her, eyes full of tender affection. Maybe it was fear, or maybe something else—but as she said those words, her heart skipped a beat.
She slowly reached along the gun and gently placed her hand over Ling Yuexi’s.
“Can’t you tell? I tried so hard, worked so carefully to get close to you… because I just wanted you to fall for me too.”
Ling Yuexi froze, clearly not expecting this response. “Sweet talker.”
Sensing her hesitation, Su Cheng acted fast. She flipped her wrist and pinned her down in one swift move. “Then—don’t you want to know the secret between me and Ziyuan?”
“What is it?”
Oh?
Their eyes met. Su Cheng blinked, a sly light flickering in her eyes.
So curious, huh?
Ling Yuexi seemed to realize she’d responded too fast, and awkwardly pulled her hand back, barking, “Speak! No tricks!”
“It was just a simple deal.” Su Cheng didn’t drag it out, wrapping her arms lightly around the Ling Yuexi’s waist and pulling her close with a smile. “Remember that Alpha we knocked out in Dragon Domain? I help Hu Ziyuan chase Tang Jin, and she helps me chase you. Isn’t that just fair trade?”
The woman in her arms let out a cold laugh, eyes narrowing. “You’ve got guts, daring to scheme against me?”
“I didn’t have a choice,” Su Cheng pouted, eyes full of wounded affection like a puppy abandoned by its owner. “You brought home some new fling and tossed me aside like yesterday’s trash.”
Ling Yuexi frowned, confused. What nonsense was she on about? Old love? Was she talking about Shi Yunqi?
And also—
“Going by timeline, aren’t you the new fling?”
“So you admit it?”
Her question caught Ling Yuexi off guard. She started to struggle but snapped back coldly, “You’re just a passing novelty I picked up for fun.”
“Still so stubborn,” Su Cheng whispered with a smile, tightening her arms and planting a light kiss. “Calling me a toy still means you wanted something from me, right~? Whatever makes you happy, I’ll play along~”
Ling Yuexi suddenly stopped struggling, raising a brow. “Anything?”
“Of course~ Anything you say.”
At those words, the Yuexi’s lips curved upward. Her smile was wicked and her red lips are dangerously tempting. The look in her eyes was like a hunter gazing at prey.
Su Cheng’s heart trembled.
Why was that smile… so evil?
A flood of vivid images suddenly flashed through her mind—
“A-Aren’t we moving too fast…?” Her ears flushed red as she lowered her head and mumbled, “It’s so late already… and I haven’t even heated my water for a bath…”
“What would you need a bath for?” Ling Yuexi chuckled as she casually stepped behind her.
No bath!? Are we jumping straight to the spicy part…?
Su Cheng stood frozen in place—-her eyes wide with fear as she watched Ling Yuexi’s every move, her whole body was trembling.
Ling Yuexi took her time closing each wooden window and locking them tight.
The candle flickered.
Just then, she turned to look back.
The warm, flickering light carved out the contours of her cold, delicate features. Moonlight carved her pale face, her lips were tinted with red, and her smile was bewitching.
Her eyes were fixed—deadly.
She moved slowly. Her steps were soft in the shifting shadows. The mink coat slid off from her shoulders, revealing a gleaming white shoulder like polished jade…
Her silver hair spilled down her back like a waterfall. That soft, slender waist curved like a serpent’s, pale and supple.
Su Cheng stood there dumbfounded, eyes locked on the approaching figure. Her heartbeat spiked; something boomed in her skull like fireworks going off.
And just as Ling Yuexi stopped right in front of her—
The candle burned out.
Darkness swallowed the room. All that remained was the sound of breathing.
Su Cheng’s nerves tightened. That familiar hint of citrus mint reached her nose again, and somewhere deep inside, she felt a strange twinge of anticipation…
A cold hand suddenly touched her.
She shuddered but didn’t pull away. Instead, she let Ling Yuexi guide her forward in the dark and whispered like a mosquito:
“…Actually… a little faster… wouldn’t be so bad…”
But… oh no, are they really going to do that so soon? Isn’t it usually the Alpha who makes the first move? Are Omegas in the apocalypse all this aggressive?
“You think it’s fast?” Ling Yuexi took a few steps while holding her hand, then stopped and gently helped her lean against the wall. “That depends on whether you cooperate.”
Co-cooperate… But isn’t she already half-disabled…
Su Cheng’s heart was pounding wildly. She’d thought she was bold enough, but clearly Ling Yuexi was the real pro here.
She was just fooling around with a few flirty lines, but compared to this woman, she was a total amateur.
No wonder she was called the Demon Queen.
She felt her arms being gently pulled apart, lifted and her palms turned upward in a cupping position.
Su Cheng couldn’t help but ask shyly, “Is… is this a new position or something…?”
Why was she turning her palms up on purpose… was she supposed to be holding something?
Suddenly, the image of Yuexi’s slender, graceful body flashed through her mind.
Tsk—
Ling Yuexi said calmly, “It’s not a new position. I just want to try something with you.”
W-want to try something with her…
Su Cheng swallowed hard. “Then be careful, don’t… don’t fall…”
Oh god, her poor little heart was trembling.
Then Ling Yuexi suddenly leaned in and whispered into her ear, word by word: “The one who needs to be careful… is you.”
Huh?
She suddenly felt something placed gently in each of her palms. Su Cheng instinctively gripped them, her fingers brushing over something round.
Wait—was that… a peach?
Confused, she wondered, This can be used as a prop too?
Ling Yuexi placed a third peach on top of Su Cheng’s head, then gently stroked her cheek and chuckled. “Don’t move, okay~”
What do you mean don’t move? How is anything supposed to happen if she doesn’t move?
After that, the woman turned around and walked back to the table, lit a new candle in the dark.
The room was dimly illuminated again, and Su Cheng saw Ling Yuexi standing a few meters away with a smile that’s breathtakingly beautiful—
Between her fingers was a spinning handgun…
WHAT THE HELL?!
Suddenly, realization hit Su Cheng like a freight train. Her expression changed drastically—anger, fear, regret, and even a bit of disappointment…
Dammit, she was being used as live target practice!
Su Cheng was about to lower her arms when Ling Yuexi immediately pulled the trigger.
BANG! The bullet flew past her armpit, tearing through her shirt and embedding itself into the wooden wall behind her.
Su Cheng froze.
“I told you not to move.” Yuexi’s red lips gently blew away the wisp of smoke from the muzzle. Ling Yuexi frowned slightly, “You said I could do anything. No backing out now.”
“There are only three peaches. If I hit all of them, I’ll let you go.”
“Be good. Just hang in there.”
Damn it all…
It felt like a bucket of cold water had been dumped over her head, instantly putting out any lingering fire in her chest.
Su Cheng stood frozen—-her eyes were wide in disbelief and her feet rooted to the ground.
How did it end up like this…
She wished she could slap herself silly right now.
No—wait—it wasn’t entirely her fault!
I mean, who wouldn’t get caught off guard by a beautiful woman sweet-talking you?
BANG! Another shot rang out, the bullet grazing her shoulder.
“So close. Missed again,” Ling Yuexi said lightly.
Goddamn it…
Su Cheng’s face crumpled. “Yuexi… I already explained everything… If you’re upset, just say it, okay? Let’s talk it out…”
“Which eye of yours sees me as upset?”
BANG! — Miss.
Whimper Oh heavens… she could see it with both eyes…
BANG!
…
Seven shots later, all three peaches remained perfectly intact.
“Bad aim today,” Ling Yuexi said regretfully as she shook her head, flicked her wrist, and removed the magazine.
Tears welled in Su Cheng’s eyes. Seeing the bullets were gone, she finally let out a long sigh of relief.
But then—
Ling Yuexi sifted through the loose gun parts on the table, casually pulled out a new magazine, and reloaded the gun with practiced ease…
!!!
This had nothing to do with bad aim—she was just playing with her!
This woman could shoot someone clean between the eyes from hundreds of meters away, and yet from this close she couldn’t even hit a peach?!
Each shot skimmed right past her body, missing by the tiniest margin—if she will move even just an inch, she could’ve actually gotten hit!
“Yuexi… I was wrong…”
BANG! — The peach in her left hand exploded into pieces.
???
Wait… did she just say the right thing?
“What exactly were you wrong about?” Ling Yuexi asked, loading the next bullet, narrowing one eye to aim, clearly amused.
“I shouldn’t have teamed up with Hu Ziyuan!”
BANG! — The bullet sliced past her hand.
Wrong answer…?
Then what the hell was it…
Su Cheng had to mentally rewind the entire day: After getting a ton of stuff from Dragon Domain, and Shi Yunqi returning from the back mountain with even more loot, the whole village had been celebrating.
So far, so good.
Then she woke up and had wanted to find Ling Yuexi—but the moment someone mentioned meat, she forgot all about that and went off to feast with Hu Ziyuan…
“I got it! I didn’t consider your feelings!”
Ling Yuexi lowered her gaze and thoughtfully rubbed her lower lip with her index finger. Then, without even looking, she casually fired a shot—shattering the other peach in Su Cheng’s right hand.
“Go on,” she said.
Holy sh1t…
She wasn’t even pretending anymore! Just now she’d missed every shot on purpose, and now she could hit them blindfolded?!
“I… shouldn’t have forgotten you just because there was meat… shouldn’t have left you out while drinking good wine…”
BANG! BANG! Two bullets in rapid succession grazed her waist on either side, leaving symmetrical rips in her T-shirt—like a custom-designed crop top.
Ling Yuexi spoke impatiently, “That stuff doesn’t count as good wine. Not sweet enough—not strong enough.”
F**k me…
Su Cheng broke into a cold sweat. The price of a wrong answer was way too steep!!!
And seriously! That peach blossom brew was already delicious… Besides, this is the apocalypse, sis—just having anything to drink is a luxury!
Wait, now’s not the time for commentary! We’ve narrowed it down to her feelings! Only one peach left on her head between her and survival!
Su Cheng closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. Her mind started replaying the dinner scene at the long table like a video tape.
The alliance didn’t anger her, neither did the food and drink… So what was it?
She fast-forwarded and rewound the memory again and again until finally—it froze on the moment they kissed.
“What I pick up can only belong to me.”
Like a chain reaction, another line surfaced from deep within her memory.
“Who told you to hug her?”
!!!
She got upset even when Su Cheng hugged Tang Jin, and he was an Alpha. So what about Hu Ziyuan?
An Omega with fair skin, killer curves, and s3x appeal through the roof…
orz… no way…
Could someone really get so jealous over that they’d use her for target practice?
Su Cheng’s eyes gradually widened, and when she met those eyes across from her, the words tumbled out of her mouth—
“You… were jealous?”
