- Chapter 19 - She Moved Out
In Hu Ziyuan’s cabin, Pupu wrung out a clean towel and skillfully wiped the face of the “dead pig” lying in bed. Only after everything was tidied up did she blow out the candle, close the door, and quietly leave.
Hong Xiu Zhao (Red Sleeve) was peaceful and quiet that night. The rest of the village had long gone dark—by this hour, everyone was already deep in dreams.
Pupu’s little cabin was built right next to Hu Ziyuan’s, and further down were Shi Yunqi and Ling Yuexi’s.
The four of them had once lived like neighbors, their small wooden houses lined up in a row. Even before the sun rose, while still in their dreams, they could hear Hu Ziyuan scolding Shi Yunqi—it was always noisy, like a festival.
Back then, Pupu would rub her sleepy eyes, open her door, and see the two of them messing around with Ling Yuexi.
“Yuexi, can’t you do something about your sister?” Shi Yunqi would shout as she dodged Hu Ziyuan’s attacks. “If she keeps being this fierce, even when humanity dies out, no one will want her!”
“None of your business!” Hu Ziyuan would throw a bunch of herbs at Shi Yunqi, reaching to grab her collar. “I’ll find you a celestial Alpha just to prove you wrong!”
“……”
“Pupu, you’re awake?” Ling Yuexi would glance back at her, then—without a trace of emotion—stretch out a foot and casually trip someone. Her expression is always as calm as water.
.
When the weather was nice, the four of them would head out to low-level infected zones to scavenge. They’d make it back to the mountain stronghold before sunset and share their finds with the others.
Sometimes they had dinner with everyone. Other times, just the four of them would light a small bonfire in front of the row of wooden cabins, drink vegetable soup, and chat about anything and everything.
Those were rare moments of peace in the apocalypse. Sometimes, a night breeze would pass through, rustling the leaves.
Shi Yunqi would toss a few dry branches into the fire, then turn her head and ask, “Do you think Yuexi would like a celestial-looking Alpha?”
“A celestial one? Only if she pleases my eyes,” came the reply.
“Do I please your eyes?”
Ling Yuexi let out a cold laugh, stood up, and went back into the cabin.
“Pfft.” Hu Ziyuan laughed so hard that she almost choked. “Hey, I swear, even when my kids are old enough to buy soy sauce, you still won’t have chased Ling Yuexi down.”
“Heh, you underestimate me.”
…
Memories flooded through my mind like a powerful wave.
Now, Pupu was standing in that same place.
The four cabins still stood in a row, but one person was gone.
.
Ling Yuexi’s heat cycle wasn’t like other Omegas’.
At first, it didn’t seem that awful. But as time went on, the abnormal mood swings gradually became more obvious.
And each time was worse than the last.
During her heat, her temper would become unusually violent. Eventually, she wouldn’t sleep for nights on end. Even after injections of suppressants, the effects only lasted a while. Occasionally, she’d go into sudden fits of madness and smash everything in her room.
The closer someone was to her, the more agitated she became, which worsened her symptoms.
On the contrary, if she was left alone to wear herself out, she’d finally settle down once she had no strength left.
That was why her room was kept simple—just the bare necessities: a table, some chairs, and a wooden bed. If something got broken, it was just replaced.
Even Hu Ziyuan had no way of treating this strange illness. No matter how many herbal brews she drank, the condition only got worse.
By now, she would even have sudden episodes outside her heat cycle—though they were rare. Compared to when she was in heat, she was much more rational during these attacks. They were milder and still within the range controlled by medicine. They came quickly and passed just as fast.
She couldn’t remember which year it was, but one night, Pupu was startled awake by a loud crash.
It was already deep into the night. She’d spent the entire day studying mechs and had just lain down. She was fast asleep when the sound woke her. At first, she just wanted to pull the blanket over her head and go back to sleep.
But the noise outside didn’t stop. She began to sense that something was wrong. Fighting her drowsiness, she reluctantly climbed out of her warm bed and put on a thick coat.
The moment she opened the door, a fierce gust of wind slammed into her face, carrying fine snowflakes that stung her skin.
That winter was colder than any she could remember. Snow had fallen for several days without pause. Icicles hung long and thick under the eaves, and the whole mountain looked like a frozen peak from a thousand years ago—endless white wherever the eye could see.
Hu Ziyuan and Shi Yunqi had bundled themselves into round balls, like two shivering snowmen standing at Ling Yuexi’s door. Their long eyelashes were frosted over, and their noses were bright red from the cold.
On the fourth day of the fever period, Yuexi, who had already taken an inhibitor and had gone to sleep, but she suddenly woke up in the middle of the night and started smashing things like mad. The doors and windows had been locked, so they couldn’t get in.
“Xi—Xi—Xi Xi, h-how are you?!” Shi Yunqi’s face was frozen stiff, stammering as she pounded on the door in panic. “S-say something…”
Clang! A loud crash made the round, chubby figures jolt.
It seemed something had been hurled inside—the wooden door shook violently and split slightly.
“Don’t come any closer…!”
“You think you can control me?!”
Ling Yuexi’s roar came from inside, sounding hysterical.
“We–we’re not try-trying to control you! We just want to h-h-help… Ow!”
Before she could finish, Hu Ziyuan lumbered forward, annoyed, and smacked her with a paw-like hand.
Enough with the endless ‘help’—what are you, the background music?!
“Help me?” The voice inside laughed maniacally, sharp and unhinged. “Ridiculous!”
Shi Yunqi tried to step forward again, but Hu Ziyuan reached out and stopped her. Just as she opened her mouth to speak, a blast of wind hit her full in the face, causing her to stagger back with Shi Yunqi. The two of them wobbled and fell into the snow together.
The Shi Yunqi and Hu Ziyuan fell like a two big white dumplings sank right into the snowdrift.
“…”
The snow began falling harder. Pupu pulled her coat against the cold wind and slowly made her way toward them, reaching out a hand to help them up—but she slipped, and her body pitched forward uncontrollably.
The two clumsy dumplings were cursing as they helped each other up, struggling to get to their feet—only to be suddenly knocked down again by something (Pupu) that pounced on them, landing face-first into the snow.
From inside the hut came another crash—unclear whether it was a table or a chair being smashed. The whole wooden structure trembled with the force.
People from the village endure the cold wind and snow to gather. From a distance, they saw three unidentifiable objects writhing on the ground…
They were worried but afraid to rush in and agitate Ling Yuexi. Everyone stood guard outside the cabin, unwilling to leave.
But none of them expected to wait the entire night.
It wasn’t until daylight, when the winter sun pierced through thick clouds and lit up the snow-covered ground, that the noise inside finally subsided.
When Shi Yunqi burst in, the room was a wreck. The person inside had collapsed onto the floor, trembling all over with red eyes.
After that incident, Ling Yuexi moved away when spring came—refusing to let anyone follow her.
Despite everyone’s repeated pleas, she ignored all opposition and moved alone deeper into the mountains, building a new wooden hut.
No one could dissuade her.
Thinking it was too lonely for one person, Shi Yunqi built a fence around her hut and planted flowers and grass, trying to make the little courtyard more homey—but those little lives were soon destroyed by a certain increasingly irritable person.
From then on, the village nights returned to peace. People no longer woke from their dreams in fear. But they had a newfound fear and reverence for the once-close leader who now lived alone in the deep forest and had become increasingly eccentric.
And in front of those old wooden huts, the bonfires never burned again.
Pupu snapped out of her memories, returning to her small wooden house under the moonlight. Though it was late, she’d eaten too much at dinner and couldn’t digest it, so she hadn’t gone to bed yet.
Various robot models and blueprints were scattered messily across the wooden table inside. Red Sleeve had only a few mechs now: one active Unit 01, and two experimental backup units.
They used to have a pretty good Unit 00, but she had personally blown it up to escape a chase by members of Dawn.
The moment she thought of that masked, blond Alpha, Pupu got annoyed.
How could someone be that fast? So agile, like a monkey.
Unlike Dragon Domain, Red Sleeve didn’t have many physically strong Alphas. Except for two “defective Alphas,” the rest were all Omegas and Betas. They could only rely on technology—build more mechs to improve their strength.
The mechs had decent defense and attack, but their speed and reaction time were too hard to improve. Facing that monkey-like Alpha was infuriating—they couldn’t even land a hit.
Pupu frowned and spread out the blueprints, making revisions with her pen. Outside, faint gunshots echoed, but she worked harder than ever.
In a small wooden cabin deep in the mountains, bang!—a bullet suddenly shot past Su Cheng’s head without warning.
The peach was unscathed.
Ling Yuexi laughed in fury, “Jealous? Me?” As if she had just heard the biggest joke, she chuckled coldly. “Jealous over you?”
Su Cheng exhaled shakily—this woman seriously needed to stop aiming at her head out of nowhere!
The last few times it had at least been her side or something. Even if it grazed her, her constitution could handle it.
But the head was different! Even zombies would drop dead with a headshot, let alone a living person!
Su Cheng’s heart almost stopped, a cold sweat breaking out on her back.
Terrifying as it was, she caught a glimmer of hope!
That woman’s reaction just now wasn’t as calm as before—she got visibly riled up and even fired back with three sharp questions. Clearly, the accusation hit a nerve, and she just didn’t want to admit it.
Such a tsundere!!!
This wasn’t about love—but a twisted kind of possessiveness.
Even if you’re just a plaything, she’d never allow anyone else to touch you.
Su Cheng knew this all too well. If it were real love, who would use their beloved as target practice? Even the best marksmanship could slip, and especially when shooting at such close range—any tremble of the hand could lead to injury.
This was clearly a highly dangerous warning.
“If I want to play with you, you’re treasure. If I don’t, you’re nothing.”
And that… wasn’t a lie.
She could dote on you—or destroy you with her own hands.
The second magazine had already fired six bullets—only one round remained in her gun.
Of course, if she got the answer wrong, Ling Yuexi would just reload with a fresh one…
But—judging by her reaction, she was definitely jealous. Still, Su Cheng needed to phrase it differently this time.
Instead of rushing to speak, Su Cheng paused to think from Ling Yuexi’s perspective. Based on her past experiences of being “favored,” the right way to say it should be—
“Oh, how can you not understand a girl’s little feelings? I wanted to make you jealous,” she said, placing extra emphasis on the word wanted.
“You kept hanging out with that damn—uh, with Shi Yunqi today! When I opened my eyes and didn’t see you, and it made me sad. So I teamed up with Ziyuan on purpose. When I saw you two together, I got jealous! I got anxious, so I wanted to use her to make you mad.”
She squeezed out two teardrops—whether from fear or something else—and cried with heartbreaking sincerity, “It’s because I care about you so much…”
Su Cheng’s tears rolled down her delicate chin one by one. Her expression was masterfully controlled, like a beauty devastated by abandonment—utterly heartbroken.
“I really know I was wrong. I won’t get close to anyone else again, okay?” Her pitiful pleading expression would have moved anyone to sympathy.
If this were her original world, her acting skills could’ve outshined a whole crop of fresh-faced idols.
Ling Yuexi was taken aback. She hadn’t expected this woman to cry on command.
Her eyes and nose were all red. She genuinely looked heartbroken.
She glanced at the scar between Su Cheng’s brows, then finally lowered her gun, turned her head away, and said in a cold voice, “As long as you know you were wrong. Go. If it happens again, I won’t be lenient.”
Holy sh*t!!!
I—sur—vived!!!
“Your humble consort thanks Your Majesty for your great mercy…” Overcome with the joy of surviving a disaster, Su Cheng almost burst out laughing through her tears. She quickly removed the peach from her head and tiptoed toward the door.
But she was so emotional that her hands were shaking as she fumbled with the lock. It took her forever to twist it open—and then she couldn’t even pull the door.
Panic started to rise again in Su Cheng’s heart.
Could this be fate?! Or maybe this cabin had some weird magnetic field? Was the Demon Queen using her willpower to trap her here?!
“Push it out.”
“Oh—oh! Thank you…”
