- Chapter 22 - The Great Sweet-Talker
Su Cheng ran over in a hurry, while still clutching the rake in her hand. She rushed forward in long strides and pressed herself against the car window, peeking inside.
Ling Yuexi was slightly taken aback by the sight, but before she could say anything, Shi Yunqi burst out laughing. “For a second there, I thought you were going to shout that your master got kidnapped by a monster~”
This damn troublemaker.
Su Cheng’s cheerful smile almost cracked. She quickly turned and tossed the rake to the roadside.
A cool breeze swept past. The woman had already grabbed the car door and climbed in.
Once everyone was seated, Pupu stepped on the gas, and the car started moving again.
Ling Yuexi cast a sidelong glance at Su Cheng. The weather was getting colder, yet this girl was dressing less and less—today she was only wearing a cropped camisole that exposed her waist.
Unlike the soft curves of an Omega, Su Cheng’s waist was firm and slender, and her abs were clearly defined, running from her sides down to her hips. But when Ling Yuexi’s eyes tried to go lower, they were blocked by those annoying pants…
“Xixi?” Su Cheng waved her hand in front of her. “You’ve been zoning out since I got in. Don’t you miss me…?”
Ling Yuexi quickly looked away and asked nonchalantly, “Your leg—did it heal?”
“Pretty much! I can even do farm work again!” Su Cheng leaned in with a wink, her expression full of expectation. “I’ve been so well-behaved lately. Don’t you think I deserve a reward?”
Though it was phrased as a question, her tone was anything but uncertain.
Ling Yuexi smiled and asked, “What do you want?”
Su Cheng happily turned her face to the side and pointed at her cheek.
“Aiyoo, young people these days…” Shi Yunqi made exaggerated faces at the rearview mirror and then nudged Pupu, who was focused on driving. “Taking notes, Pupu?”
“……”
Ling Yuexi sat there quietly without saying a word.
“No kiss for me?” Su Cheng pouted, then suddenly leaned in and gave her a loud smooch. “Then I’ll help myself~”
Out of the corner of her eye, she gave the meddling Shi Yunqi a smug glance—Hmph, see? I’m the real wifey here~
Ling Yuexi raised her hand and lightly tapped her on the forehead. “Sit properly.”
“Still shy.”
“Shut it.”
“Sigh…” Shi Yunqi let out a dramatic sigh while fanning herself. “I really do care too much about my dignity.”
Pfft, like dignity’s going to feed you these days.
Su Cheng stuck out her tongue and then turned back, speaking softly, “You must be tired after being out for so long. Want to lie down and rest a bit?”
Ling Yuexi shook her head with her eyes closed, leaning back into the seat.
“Playing all tsundere again,” Su Cheng murmured, then she pulled her into her lap and let her rest there. Mimicking what Ling Yuexi used to do, she gently covered her eyes with her palm and said softly, “I won’t tease you. I just think this way feels more comfortable.”
This time, the woman didn’t resist. She quietly lay there, her breathing gradually evening out as the car climbed up the mountain.
She really must be exhausted.
Shi Yunqi turned around to say something but was immediately met with a sharp glare from Su Cheng: “Don’t make a sound!”
…
The car drove all the way to the small fenced courtyard, and Ling Yuexi still didn’t wake up.
Su Cheng carefully carried her inside without waking her.
Shi Yunqi followed behind. She was surprised to see the weeds in the yard had been trimmed and replaced with new greenery. But then she sighed—who knew how long these little plants could survive?
She stepped onto the porch, but the moment she walked in, she was shocked.
Three seconds later, she quietly closed the door and backed out again.
I must’ve opened the wrong door.
“Big Sis Yunqi, what are you doing?” Pupu had just parked the car and entered the yard, only to see Shi Yunqi standing there like a wooden stake.
Snapping out of it, Shi Yunqi said, “Perfect timing. Come on, let’s go.” She grabbed Pupu, pushed open the wooden door again, and turned with a grin. “Tell me this doesn’t feel like magic.”
Pupu gasped while covering her mouth with both hands. “Cinderella’s cottage?”
The inside of the wooden house was completely transformed. The floors had been redone, the fireplace moved to a new spot with a cozy armchair and tea table next to it, and a soft fur rug was beneath it.
The bullet holes in the wall were cleverly covered with butterfly-shaped wooden hooks—both decorative and practical.
The whole place looked warm and inviting. The space was small but well-equipped, and all the new furniture was finely crafted.
The two tiptoed inside, wandering around like kids in a toy store.
“Tsk tsk, when did our little village get such a talented hand?” Shi Yunqi bent down to study the wood grain on the table, gently tracing it with her fingers. “Even the sharp corners were smoothed out. Someone really cared.”
Pupu pointed up. “Look! There’s even a skylight!”
…
Just as Su Cheng finished settling Ling Yuexi into bed, she turned around to see the two of them poking around the room like country grannies visiting a palace.
“Ahem. Grannies, may I have a word?”
The two of them looked over and nodded in unison.
They all sat down on the stone bench in the yard. Su Cheng poured them a glass of water and asked, “Is the village low on supplies lately? Why were you gone for so long that Xixi ended up this exhausted?” A trace of displeasure flickered in her eyes as she frowned slightly. “Even though I’m a defective A, I’m still stronger than your average Beta. I could’ve helped.”
Now that’s a gentle scolding.
Shi Yunqi sighed, “I was just following orders; you know how stubborn she is.”
“But this trip really didn’t go smoothly.” She took a sip of water and cleared her throat. “We can’t afford to go too deep into dangerous areas. There’s no cure if you get infected, so we stuck to Zones 1 through 8, picking up scraps. But even those low-risk zones have already been pretty much scavenged.”
“If you really want to help, wait till she wakes up and ask her. If she agrees to bring you along, I’d say we’ll be storming the Dragon Domain before long~”
Are they about to make a move…?
Su Cheng’s heart tightened, but she still smiled brightly on the surface. “Sure, I’m really looking forward to it~”
“Hahaha, you little half-A, you think it’s fun? It’s actually dangerous,” Shi Yunqi laughed, glancing at her. When her eyes landed on Su Cheng’s neck, her expression suddenly sharpened.
“What’s this you’re wearing?” she asked, reaching out to lift the chain on her neck. She examined the pendant closely. “This material seems pretty special…”
The pendant was shaped like a wing, entirely silver and polished, thin and delicate. The feathers were intricately carved and looked incredibly lifelike.
“It’s—It’s nothing special, just plastic. Just something I wear for fun.” Su Cheng quickly pulled the chain out of her hand and changed the subject. “You two should get some rest too. This trip’s been tiring. I’ll cook something good later, personally.”
“Alright. I heard Su Su’s cooking is pretty good—I’ll be the judge of that,” Shi Yunqi said with a grin, then waved for Pupu to follow her out.
Only after watching them drive off did Su Cheng finally let out a sigh of relief.
Good thing Shi Yunqi didn’t hold the pendant up to her face. If she’d recognized it, that would’ve been super awkward.
She sat quietly in the courtyard for a while longer, fingers tapping on the table as she thought. After a long moment, she finally got up and left.
…
The people in the village were busy moving around supplies that they had gathered. Su Cheng passed by and glanced over—it was mostly scrap materials and old metals. Nothing valuable.
Walking a bit further, she happened to spot Hu Ziyuan coming back from the distance with a bamboo basket on her back.
Hu Ziyuan had just returned from gathering herbs in the back hills. Seeing her, she realized Ling Yuexi and the others must be back and immediately turned to head deeper into the forest.
Su Cheng saw her and quickly sped up to catch up. “Hey, Ziyuan.”
“Su Su? What is it?”
“Are you going to find Xixi?”
“Yeah, I wanted to check on her.”
Su Cheng waved her hand. “I just came from the courtyard. She was really tired and already went to sleep. Better not disturb her for now.”
Hu Ziyuan thought for a moment. “Alright, I’ll deal with these herbs first and go later tonight.” Then she suddenly raised an eyebrow. “You move fast, huh~”
“Haha, of course.” Su Cheng laughed, then glanced around and quietly pulled her aside. “I need your help with something.”
Hu Ziyuan instinctively lowered her voice. “What is it? So mysterious.”
“Ahem, so… Next time you go raiding Longyu, could you take me along?”
“Huh? That’s not up to me. You need to—”
“I know.” Su Cheng cut her off. “But she might not agree, right? That’s why I’m asking you for help. You’re second-in-command after all—your word carries weight, no?”
“…But still—”
“Come on, I really can’t stop worrying about Xixi.” Su Cheng clutched her chest with a sorrowful look. “It’s not easy to meet someone you love in this world. Every goodbye could be the last. You’ve loved someone too, right? You understand…”
Hu Ziyuan hesitated.
“Besides,” Su Cheng continued to persuade, “you and Tang Jin are on opposing sides. If you ran into her on the battlefield, would she talk things out with you?”
Hu Ziyuan shook her head. During the last Longyu raid, her aggressive behavior probably scared the girl.
“Exactly. That’s why you need me to play mediator. I’ve got a decent relationship with her, as you saw~”
Hu Ziyuan’s eyes lit up. She nodded in agreement.
“So!” Su Cheng raised a finger to the sky and stood shoulder to shoulder with her. “If it’s for love, we have to go for it! It’s the end of the world—what is there left to fear?”
Hu Ziyuan took a deep breath as if making up her mind, then raised her hand too. “You’re right! It’s the end of the world—what is there left to fear!”
Yes—brainwashing successful.
******
After they parted, Su Cheng returned contentedly and took a nap. It was late afternoon by the time she got up to prepare dinner.
These past days, the Red Sleeve farm had been running pretty smoothly. The chickens had already laid quite a few eggs.
Su Cheng put on a coat and went down to the farm at the foot of the mountain. She rolled up her sleeves, crouched down, and quickly snatched several eggs while the hens weren’t looking. Then she ran off, dodging their angry pecks and looking quite pathetic.
As she walked back up the mountain road with a basket of eggs and chicken feathers on her head, she couldn’t help thinking, “How did a mighty S-rank Alpha from Longyu end up like this?”
“Cheng Su, what are you making today?”
“Egg fried rice~”
Yeah. Fantastic.
…
As dusk fell, Su Cheng was already busy in the kitchen; the whole room filled with the aroma of food. Pupu followed the scent and walked in.
“Smells so good… Is that egg fried rice? I haven’t had it in so long.”
“Yep.” Su Cheng gave the wok a few tosses and added a pinch of salt. “There’ll be some diced chicken too.”
“Awesome.” Pupu leaned forward, a little shy. “Um, could I maybe…”
“You want me to sneak you a bowl first, right?”
The girl nodded hard.
Su Cheng smiled knowingly. She’d noticed this girl before—whenever there was good food, she never fought over it with others but would come straight to the kitchen.
“I can give you a bowl, but you’ll have to help me with something.”
“Sure, what do I need to do?”
“Not hard—just pass a message to the town elder and follow my lead when the time comes.”
“Deal!”
…
When Su Cheng brought out the egg fried rice, she saw Ling Yuexi and Hu Ziyuan already sitting at the long table. She paused, a hint of surprise in her eyes. She had planned to bring Yuexi her portion separately—when had she woken up?
“Xixi, how was your rest?” Su Cheng placed the rice on the table and served her a small bowl. “The soup will be ready soon, no rush. I cooked everything myself today—guaranteed delicious~”
“Thank you.” Ling Yuexi accepted the bowl, her eyes lowered in silence for a moment. Then she asked, “The house… that was you…?”
When she woke up, she was stunned for a long time, and it was Hu Ziyuan who told her what had happened in the past few days.
That person had described it in vivid detail—so animated and over-the-top that it was almost unbelievable.
Huh? Did she just say thank you?
Su Cheng was suddenly caught off guard by a feeling of being flattered. Looking at her lowered eyelashes, she unconsciously softened her voice and said, “I’m just glad you like it.”
