- Chapter 27 - Pushed to the Edge
That wasn’t what she meant at all.
But given the situation and Su Cheng’s tone, it was hard not to let one’s mind wander.
“Nonsense!” With a sharp motion, Ling Yuexi flung the hand off her shoulder and turned around instantly.
Eat meat? What meat?!
She was an Omega—she couldn’t even mark anyone, so how the hell was she supposed to eat?
At that moment, Su Cheng was already leaning forward on the seat. As Ling Yuexi turned around, their noses almost brushed.
They were so close. Close enough that Ling Yuexi could see every detail of Su Cheng’s long lashes.
Her gaze dropped on its own, landing on the girl’s upturned lips—soft, rosy, and curved in a faint smile. Pretty, so pretty it almost hurt.
In that instant, memories came flooding back like a flickering lantern show:
That kiss fueled by anger and peach wine was hot and forceful. That kiss of impulse, reckless and wild. That kiss was soft as a breeze, gentle as water. And the one in the quiet field, daring and bold, wet with want and hidden desire…
No matter which it was, her lips had always been warm, tender, and sweet like ripe fruit…
Ling Yuexi suddenly felt a strange heat rising in her body. She shot Su Cheng a shy, angry glare, quickly turned her head aside, and stubbornly said, “Pure fiction.”
She, who was always cold and distant, now had a face flushed with color—red
“Every night?! Partying?!”
Ling Yuexi received yet another wild accusation, which caused her anger meter to spike once more.
These two were just getting more and more outrageous!
“I…” The words suddenly caught in her throat. She stood there, stunned with fury, her fists clenched tight. After taking a deep breath with her eyes shut, she finally said in a trembling voice, “There’s nothing going on…”
She had never been good at arguing, and when she was truly angry, she liked speaking even less.
But standing there like that… it really wasn’t very convincing.
“You think I’m blind?” Hu Ziyuan’s voice suddenly shot up. “I saw it with my own eyes!”
There was hard evidence, a witness—and she still wanted to deny it?
Hu Ziyuan’s single line was enough to set Hong Xiu Zhao’s two heads into a furious bickering match. Su Cheng watched it all like it was a great drama, stifling laughter as she hid to the side, regretting only that she didn’t have sunflower seeds in hand.
“Oh, there’s plenty you haven’t seen!” She cut in, eyes gleaming with mischief. “You should see that little courtyard she lives in—deep in the mountains, with no soul around. Even if I screamed myself, no one would hear me.”
!!!
Now that she mentioned it—wasn’t that exactly the case when Cheng Su got beaten up like a sandbag?
Well… maybe she had just been sleeping too soundly.
But still! It was indeed a hidden courtyard!
Ling Yuexi had complete freedom to do as she pleased in the deep woods!
“Beast in human clothes…” Hu Ziyuan clapped a hand over her mouth, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at Ling Yuexi. “I never thought you were that kind of person!”
Beast in human clothes…
You’ve earned yet another label. Great. Just great.
What next? What other filthy accusations were they going to throw at her?
Taking a deep breath, Ling Yuexi didn’t bother arguing anymore. It was as if she’d surrender herself, wearing a look that said, “Say what you want—I accept it all.”
“And she won’t even let you have a sip of soup!” Su Cheng added gleefully, still fanning the flames. “She’s worse than an animal!”
Worse than an animal…
“Not just that.” Ling Yuexi’s tightly clenched fists slowly loosened as she murmured the words.
She opened her eyes, locked them onto the girl who had been smirking just a moment ago, and gave a dangerous smile. “I’m cruel, ruthless, and absolutely heartless. When I get mad, I could eat you alive… Doesn’t that scare you?”
Her red lips curled slightly in a smile that could seduce the soul, but the glint in her eyes was like a thousand arrows flying straight through the heart.
The smile on Su Cheng’s face froze. A chill crept up her spine.
It felt like being locked in the gaze of some massive invisible serpent—inescapable, inescapable. Her whole body tensed with dread.
The kind of hunter that doesn’t rest until the prey is caught.
“…It’s not that serious,” she croaked, her throat dry as she swallowed. “I was just messing around…”
“Nope,” Ling Yuexi said sweetly, her voice gentle but firm. “I’m dead serious.”
“…”
A couple of dry laughs escaped Su Cheng’s throat. Oh no, she thought. She’s really mad this time…
That smile was hiding a blade. She could tell just from one look—it spelled trouble.
Even the hairs on the back of her hand were standing up. Shivering slightly, Su Cheng quickly tried to change the subject.
“Ahem… Weren’t we talking about Tang Jin just now? I mean, since Ziyuan likes her so much, can’t you just cut her some slack?”
“It’s not cutting slack!” Hu Ziyuan quickly jumped in. “I want her to stay!”
“No.” Now that they were back to business, Ling Yuexi’s expression turned cold and serious again. “Do I really need to tell you how dangerous an A-grade Alpha is?”
“But Tang Jin is a good person…” Hu Ziyuan gently brushed the hair from someone’s forehead, her eyes filled with emotion. “If she gets to know Hong Xiu Zhao, she’d never hurt us.”
“She doesn’t even remember you.” Ling Yuexi’s voice went colder, followed by a mocking laugh. “Even if she was a good person before—do you really think people don’t change after all these years?”
“Didn’t she just team up with Yazhi to capture you a moment ago?”
“The world’s already gone mad, Ziyuan. People’s hearts… they can’t be trusted anymore.”
That sigh—it was like a needle stabbing deep into Hu Ziyuan’s chest.
And into Su Cheng’s too.
If no one could be trusted… Then what did that make her in Ling Yuexi’s eyes?
But on second thought, wasn’t Yuexi right?
She really shouldn’t have trusted herself in the first place.
The logic made sense—but it still felt like a rock lodged in her chest.
“She won’t change…” Hu Ziyuan sniffed, her eyes growing red. “It’s normal if she doesn’t remember me. We didn’t really know each other back then.”
The one who’d held on so tightly all these years… was her.
Tang Jin didn’t know anything. To her, Hu Ziyuan was just someone she’d met a couple of times.
No—now she was the enemy.
And yet she still had the nerve to say sorry to her. What a fool… just like before…
*****
Tang Jin and Hu Ziyuan’s past encounter:
“Sorry.” A short-haired girl with blue hair, eyes full of guilt, handed her a piece of bread and said, “This is all I have… There were a lot of disaster victims today. Food’s tight…”
Hu Ziyuan snatched the bread without a word and turned to the alley.
What a nutjob.
She’d broken into so many homes, but that was the first time she’d met someone that dumb—wasted a good face, too.
How could she have caught a thief in the act and still attempted to feed her?
Was her brain fried? Did she even know what kind of era this was? Doing good wouldn’t earn you any karma anymore!
She was just a regular scout corps Beta, about the same age as her, but she was trying to act all grown-up—even offering charity.
Hu Ziyuan sneered with disdain, clutching the bread as she darted into a side alley and curled up in a damp corner, tearing into the bread with hungry bites.
That had been the first time she met Tang Jin. Neither of them had differentiated yet.
She had been just fourteen back then, with hair cropped short like a boy’s. On top of that, she’d wrapped herself up so tightly that only her eyes showed. You couldn’t even tell what she looked like.
Alphas usually differentiated between fourteen and sixteen years old. Omegas took about two years longer. So if someone hadn’t shown signs by eighteen, they were basically a Beta.
Hu Ziyuan remembered thinking—maybe one day, when she became an Alpha and was strong enough to protect herself, she wouldn’t have to live like a ghost in the shadows anymore.
As she grew older, her looks became increasingly striking—so much so that they even began to attract some unsavory attention…
But she was quick to notice, so she’d started disguising herself years ago, smearing dirt on her face and keeping to herself as much as possible.
After all, being attractive made one far too conspicuous.
She had once seen it with her own eyes—how a beautiful Beta boy from the lower sector was snatched away by two Alphas in broad daylight… and never returned.
“If I went back ten years, even I wouldn’t recognize myself,” Hu Ziyuan murmured, twirling a lock of Tang Jin’s hair around her fingertip, the corners of her lips curving into a graceful smile. “Besides, she’s never seen my real face…”
What the hell—ten years ago…?
“You—you’ve met Tang Jin before?” Su Cheng looked at her in shock, a bold thought suddenly striking her. “Wait, are you also from the Dragon Domain…?”
Then what about Ling Yuexi…?
“Yep. Just like you, we escaped from the Dragon Domain too,” Hu Ziyuan smiled. “So much has changed there over the years. When we fled, the Dawn Building had only just laid its foundation.”
Did they all escape from the Dragon Domain?
The words had already fallen several seconds ago, but Su Cheng was still frozen in place.
Ha. “Just like you,” she says—when Su Cheng was actually an undercover agent!
Her mind went blanked, and all those little details she’d previously brushed off suddenly surged to the surface—
No wonder Ling Yuexi had known that there was a cabinet on the seventh shelf of the pharmacy that could hide someone!
So she really had lived in the Dragon Domain before!
“You remember a half-built little building from all those years ago?” Su Cheng was stunned, a hint of panic flickering across her face. “You’ve got that kind of memory?”
After they’d stolen the medicine from the clinic, it was Ling Yuexi who had led them under the Dawn Building!
Wait a second… could they have met before?
But she had no memory of either of them…
“Not really,” Ling Yuexi admitted frankly; her eyes were calm. “My memory’s pretty bad. I only really remember the people I hold grudges against.”
“Pretty bad,” huh…
Pfft.
Su Cheng suddenly fell silent.
What would happen if Ling Yuexi found out she was an undercover agent and had been lying to her all along?
“I’m the vicious, heartless type,” Ling Yuexi said seriously, eyes unwavering. “I could eat you alive.”
As soon as she uttered those words, Su Cheng experienced a sudden chill and a tingling sensation on her scalp.
That might be a future problem—but right now…
She’d just pissed her off!
Su Cheng lifted her eyes slightly, only to meet Ling Yuexi’s faint, half-smiling, very dangerous gaze…
Oh god. Terrifying.
Maybe she should just jump off the car right now and make a run for it. She probably wouldn’t survive the night at this rate!
“What are you shaking for?” Ling Yuexi gently clasped her wrist, as if sensing her intentions, and smiled sweetly. “There’s no grudge between us. I’m more inclined to spoil you, if anything.”
“No, no, don’t bother, Boss. You should focus on your important work.” Su Cheng quickly waved her hands and changed the subject. “By the way, Ziyuan—why did you guys flee the Dragon Domain?”
Hu Ziyuan rolled her eyes at her like she was looking at an idiot. “We all presented as Omegas. You think we were going to wait around to be slaughtered?”
Oh, right…
Mo Mei was a special case because of her original host’s protection. The others weren’t nearly so lucky.
Thinking of Mantingfang, Su Cheng snuck a glance at Ling Yuexi—
She wondered what it would be like to see her dressed in silks and satins, swaying her slender waist as she danced…
As the thought took hold, a vivid scene popped into her mind:
“Bring out your most beautiful Omega!” She barked, waving her sleeve grandly as she lounged in a chair. “And I mean with personality!”
“No problem! How about this one?” The madam stepped aside, revealing a figure behind her.
Ling Yuexi appeared, long hair flowing, a sheer veil covering her face. Her jade-green eyes dipped shyly downward.
She looked like a delicate blossom—barely covered in silk, porcelain skin exposed. With dainty steps, she approached and smiled coyly. “General Chaofeng~”
“Tsk, not bad.” Su Cheng grabbed her chin for a closer look, then yanked her into her lap.
“Kyaa~ General Chaofeng, nooo~~”
“No what?” Su Cheng gave her perky little butt a hard squeeze and said arrogantly, “Now dance for your general~”
“You’re so bad~ you’re awful~”
…
“Hehehehehe…” It was incredibly spicy!
Lost in her daydream, Su Cheng couldn’t help but giggle out loud.
