- Chapter 29 - The One in Charge
Ling Yuexi hadn’t expected Hu Ziyuan to be this upset.
The two of them had known each other for a long time, but because of certain events, they hadn’t seen each other in quite a while.
Whatever had happened between Hu Ziyuan and that other person, she didn’t know.
Besides, who would’ve thought that someone like her—who wore every emotion on her face and couldn’t hide a single thought—could hide an Alpha that deep in her heart?
She thought Ziyuan’s feelings were nothing more than casual words.
Just like how she brought Cheng Su back then. She regarded Cheng Su as merely a fleeting attraction, someone who captured her attention. It helped that Cheng Su was a defective Alpha—no real threat. As for that little something else stirring in her heart, she couldn’t be bothered to dig deeper.
But if one day, Cheng Su dared to betray Hong Xiu Zhao—
She would kill her. No hesitation.
She… would, right?
She should… right?
A sudden weight settled on her chest.
Something she used to think was simple now felt unexpectedly troubling…
“Don’t cry. It’s not like there’s no solution.”
“What solution?” Ling Yuexi asked immediately.
“Well, aren’t you two just worried that Tang Jin might suddenly turn against you?” Scratching her head, Su Cheng mumbled, “There’s, um… a kind of, cough, tool… It can keep an Alpha under control…”
“Tool?” Hu Ziyuan blinked tearfully, looking at her in confusion.
“Yeah… it’s a special kind of handcuff.” Su Cheng’s gaze drifted to the window as she chose her words carefully. “It goes with, um, a collar. A pretty… special one.”
Of course, it wasn’t just those. There were whips, chains, and all sorts of other things she didn’t dare to mention.
Handcuffs… collar?
The moment those words came out, Ling Yuexi narrowed her eyes, the look in them sharp and curious.
Too impulsive.
Su Cheng only now began to regret her loose lips… She should’ve just left Tang Jin behind instead of softening at the last minute…
With Ling Yuexi staring daggers at her, Su Cheng felt a chill crawl up her spine. She finally shut her eyes and just blurted it out. “Anyway, the collar goes around the neck. When you press the remote, an electric pulse hits the gland, and the Alpha instantly settles down. Then with the handcuffs to restrain her, well… then…”
She’s completely at your mercy.
“Won’t it hurt?” Hu Ziyuan, still foggy-headed from crying, sniffled through her words. The mention of stimulating the gland made her worry Tang Jin might get hurt. “And besides, we don’t have anything like that.”
“We do, we do!” Su Cheng said quickly. “Remember how we swiped a bunch of stuff from the Chaos Wind base? It’s in that sack. As long as she doesn’t try to hurt anyone, we won’t need to use the electric part.”
She had actually planned to sneak that stuff out and toss it when no one was looking. If it weren’t for these two, she wouldn’t have brought it up!
“Really? I didn’t get a chance to look through it yet.”
Having something that could restrain an Alpha was obviously the best-case scenario. They could keep Tang Jin around and still ensure everyone’s safety.
Though, deep down, Hu Ziyuan still believed Tang Jin wouldn’t hurt anyone.
“You sure know a lot, huh?” Ling Yuexi leaned over and whispered by her ear.
Hu Ziyuan might not have noticed, but that didn’t mean she didn’t.
Stuff like this wasn’t uncommon in Mantingfang—but they were always made for Omegas.
Judging by Su Cheng’s age, she would’ve still been a kid when the disaster struck. She couldn’t have come into contact with that kind of thing.
So how did she know about it? Don’t tell her a defective Alpha had been roaming around Mantingfang?
Grabbing Su Cheng by the chin, Ling Yuexi stared straight into her eyes and gave a cold sneer. “Never heard you mention this before. Where’d you learn about it?”
Wh-where?
A layer of cold sweat spread across her palms.
It happened not long after she first crossed over. She had just stepped out of the barracks…
“Chao Feng, I’ve got something good for you.” A white shadow flashed before her eyes, and Fu Xi quickly stuffed a box of unknown objects into her coat pocket, saying mysteriously, “Go back and try it with your Omega. I promise it’s a whole new experience.”
“What the hell?” Su Cheng gave him a sideways glance, frowning. “Are you trying to get something out of me?”
No one gives stuff for free. Either you’re scheming or up to no good.
Although this guy is an A-level Alpha, he has the worst professional ability in Dawn. As the commander of the city defense army, he often leaves his post without permission and asks others for help when something goes wrong.
“It’s not a big deal.” Pulling the man to a corner, Fuxi lowered his voice and said, “Please help me find out what my godfather has to say. When will he allow the admiral to bring the Omega home on his own?”
He’d been pining after some boy for years, but Qing Cang never gave him permission. In all of Longyu, only Chao Feng got to keep Mo Mei at home. The guy was dying of envy.
“Ask him yourself!” Su Cheng shoved his hand away and strode past him in long strides.
All he ever thinks about is Omegas! She thought it was serious—turns out he was just bored out of his mind.
“Wait, wait! You’re his favorite, aren’t you?” Fu Xi rushed to block her again. “I don’t have the pull you do. And hey, I even gave you a gift!”
“Who wants it! Take it back!” She nearly forgot to return it in her rush to leave.
“No, no, no—” Fu Xi stopped her before she could pull it out, lowering his voice further. “That’s the real deal. Someone brought it back from a scavenging run just for me. Most people wouldn’t even get the chance!”
“The real deal?” What was this nonsense?
“You’ll see. Ahem. Just a friendly reminder—be very careful when you use it. That thing’s got some serious kick.” He glanced around quickly, then leaned in with a mischievous smile, “But once you put that on, Mo Mei’ll be more than happy to play with you…”
“What do you mean? She’s always happy to hang out with me!”
Su Cheng took a step back, pulling away in disgust, frowning as she glanced at him. But seeing his smug, punchable face, something suddenly didn’t feel right. She instinctively looked down at her pocket…
She noticed a small, flat, jet-black box in his pocket. She couldn’t see it clearly, only caught a few words: “Extreme… restraint… Alpha special…”
“…”
As a seasoned veteran, she instantly got it.
“…Are you freaking nuts?” Su Cheng abruptly looked up and grabbed him by the collar, shouting, “How many times do I have to tell you—that’s my sister!”
And he actually gave her that kind of thing?! Their relationship was pure sisterhood—what did he take them for?!
“Yes, yes, yes—then you can save it for someone else next time!” Seeing she was angry, Fuxi quickly waved his hands, going along with her words. But inwardly he muttered, “It’s not like they’re bl00d-related. Calling each other ‘sister’ and ‘brother’ is just a thing~
The problem was, she was just too thin-skinned. Who in Longyu didn’t know about those two?
Chao Feng was an S-Class Alpha, full of youthful energy, but never went to places like Mantingfang. Did she really just rely on suppressants during her heat?
Well, it made sense. That woman was always out scavenging supplies or training at the barracks, totally uninterested in anything else.
With such a beautiful and delicate Omega at home, why would she bother going to Mantingfang?
“I don’t need it; I don’t need it.” Su Cheng didn’t want to waste more time talking to him. She just wanted to give it back and get out of there.
However, when she pushed the item back, Fuxi reacted even more quickly. He quickly walks away. “Remember to ask her for me!”
“…”
Carrying that kind of item around, Su Cheng hadn’t dared toss it out randomly. She was afraid someone might find it. So she hid it in her bedroom, where no one noticed. Over time, she even forgot about it herself—until she was making furniture for Ling Yuexi and found it buried in a sack of stuff. Who knew how it ended up getting packed in?
Now, with everything going on, it suddenly came to mind.
That thing could restrain Alphas—but whether it worked on high-ranking ones was another story.
She honestly just couldn’t bear to see Hu Ziyuan crying like that. But the moment she spoke up, she began to regret it…
“You never asked before either…” Su Cheng gave a nervous laugh and lied through her teeth. “I just heard about it from Chao Feng. It was in her room, nothing to do with me!”
“…”
Ling Yuexi fell into deep thought.
It was true—the item most likely came from that woman’s room.
But…
Chao Feng actually had that kind of kink?
Thinking back on their previous encounters, Ling Yuexi’s expression turned a bit strange. Her gaze became complicated.
People always said Omegas were hard to figure out—but apparently, Alphas were no less mysterious…
“She really used it?” Still unsure, she frowned and asked again.
“She did!” Su Cheng patted her chest in assurance. “It’s no secret in Longyu! Even S-Class Alphas can’t break free from it, let alone A-Class ones, so you can rest easy.”
Tch, it’s not like Ling Yuexi had any way to confirm it anyway—so she might as well lie! What was there to be scared of?
“So that means we can keep Tang Jin then?” Wiping her tears, Hu Ziyuan looked like she’d come back to life, full of hope.
“Of course! All the worries are solved now~” Seeing her smiling through tears, Su Cheng couldn’t help but smile too, her mood lifting. She turned to tug at Ling Yuexi’s sleeve and winked. “Boss lady, say yes, won’t you~?”
Boss lady…
The affectionate little endnote of that word lingered in the air, like a feather brushing lightly across Ling Yuexi’s heart.
Just one missing word—and the meaning changed entirely. It felt like… she was her wife…
“…Let’s first see if that thing actually works.” Ling Yuexi avoided her heated gaze and looked at Hu Ziyuan. “We’ll bring her back to the village and lock her up. When she wakes up, I’ll interrogate her.”
Suppressing that odd feeling, she thought—just this once, she’d trust that woman. She did this for the sake of Hu Ziyuan.
“Okay, don’t worry~” Hu Ziyuan gently stroked Tang Jin’s face and said, “I’ll take good care of her~”
Watching the two of them, Su Cheng quietly let out a breath and wiped the sweat from her forehead.
She had no idea whether this decision was right or wrong…
After they finished discussing the big stuff, Ling Yuexi turned back around and restarted the vehicle.
“Yuexi, how’s everything on your side?” Not long after they started moving again, Shi Yunqi’s voice came through. “Things are going smoothly for the two of us—we’re heading to the rendezvous point.”
“There were some hiccups. I’ll explain when we meet.” Glancing at the time, Ling Yuexi asked, “Did you shake the pursuers?”
“Ugh, don’t even get me started. That Alpha called Bi’an is a real pain to deal with…”
Seeing them talking, Su Cheng quietly poked Hu Ziyuan and asked, “How long will that shot you gave her last?”
They might’ve managed to keep her for now, but they still hadn’t figured out how to explain things to Tang Jin.
If she suddenly woke up in the car, it was going to be a mess.
After so many times working together in the “Su-Hu Alliance,” Hu Ziyuan could tell something was up just from her tone.
“Depends on the person’s constitution,” she whispered like Su Cheng did. “For an A-Class Alpha, maybe one to two hours.”
“Oh…” That was kind of short. There was a good chance she’d wake up before they even got back, and if she saw them before they’d clued her in, that would be bad. “Do you have another dose?”
“Yeah, of course.” Hu Ziyuan was puzzled. “Why?”
“Ahem—you know me, right? I’m a loyal, ride-or-die kind of friend. Never betray my team.” Su Cheng sneaked a glance at Ling Yuexi. Seeing that she was still chatting with Shi Yunqi and not paying attention, she lowered her voice and said seriously, “But this time, I covered for you with Tang Jin. When she wakes up, she’s definitely going to be pissed. She might even start a fight with Yuexi.”
“…Yeah, that makes sense…” A full-on general of Longyu got tricked and dragged back like this—wasn’t that super humiliating?
“That’s why you’ve got to help me. She can’t wake up yet. Once we’re back at the village, I need a chance to talk to her before Yuexi does, you get me?”
Seeing Hu Ziyuan hesitate, Su Cheng added, “It’s just a tiny little favor—and come on, who helped you out just now, huh?”
Tilting her head in thought, Hu Ziyuan figured that explaining things didn’t seem like such a big deal. Su Cheng and Tang Jin appeared to get along fairly well—no need to let something like this ruin their relationship.
“Alright then.” Making up her mind, she turned back, rummaged through her bag, pulled out two syringes, rolled up Tang Jin’s sleeve, and injected her without hesitation…
The three of them drove to the rendezvous point and regrouped with Shi Yunqi and Pupu, which naturally led to another round of explaining.
“Tsk, stealing supplies and now stealing people—Qingcang’s gonna be fuming this time,” Shi Yunqi muttered on the way back. “But does that gadget of yours really work? If it were me, I’d just cripple her like we did—much safer.”
Su Cheng reached up and rubbed the back of her neck, thinking that it wasn’t really the same. You’re the only one who’s actually crippled.
“You try it!” Hu Ziyuan shouted over the radio, “Sick of living, are you? Just touch my Alpha, and I’ll put an end to you!
She didn’t sound like the tear-streaked mess from earlier.
“Jeez, so fierce. That Tang Jin’s gonna get scared off sooner or later,” Shi Yunqi muttered to himself in the other car. Then he turned to Pupu and said, “Don’t you go copying them—first one, then the other, bringing strays back to the village.”
“……”
“Shi Yunqi! I heard that—talking behind my back again?!”
“Nooo, I was just saying what a lovely day it is—”
A bolt of lightning tore across the sky. Thunder rumbled violently, like a mountain crashing down, shaking the earth.
The rain came harder and harder, and winds howled outside the car window, even drowning out Hu Ziyuan’s yelling…
