- Chapter 3 - Baby Voice
Now she truly understood what it meant to be hanging by a thread between life and death.
Su Cheng had barely dodged that deadly shot. The silver bullet hit the soldier beside her instead, killing him instantly as bl00d splattered everywhere.
For a moment, everyone froze. The gunshot had stunned them all.
Yu Fei was the first to react—she immediately dashed in the direction of the sniper.
Su Cheng broke into a cold sweat. Her heart felt like it was about to jump out of her throat. If it hadn’t been for this body’s reflexes, she would’ve been a corpse by now.
The woman had been aiming right at her temple!
*****
Several hundred meters away, Ling Yuexi frowned. She hadn’t expected Chao Feng’s instincts to be this sharp—this was the first time someone had actually dodged her sniper shot.
Since it wasn’t a one-shot kill, the mission had failed.
Now that her position was exposed, she guessed it wouldn’t be long before the Bi An beasts from Dawn came after her.
“Ziyuan, let’s go.” Ling Yuexi decisively packed up her rifle, jumped into the armored vehicle, and drove off with the purple-haired woman.
…
After Yu Fei took off, Ling Yuexi never fired again. Even so, Su Cheng was still rattled with fear.
They couldn’t stay here any longer! This place was a deadly trap.
The giant robot was strong and heavily armored, and even its joints were rock-solid. Her blade didn’t leave so much as a scratch.
Su Cheng glanced at the pile of rubble up ahead and suddenly had an idea.
She slowly lured the giant robot toward it and shouted to the others, “Stop fighting! Everyone, get the wounded on the vehicles—now! Then split up and run!”
Tang Jin saw the direction she was heading and immediately understood.
Su Cheng led the robot to the rubble-blocked path, using herself as bait to engage it. Just as the robot threw a powerful punch, the path was blasted open.
While she distracted the robot, the soldiers scrambled to carry the wounded onto the vehicles. The convoy then rushed out through the gap, scattering in different directions.
Su Cheng leapt into the vehicle Tang Jin had driven over to pick her up, and they exited the canyon together.
The robots were soon left far behind.
Tang Jin sped along, but behind them, an armored vehicle was hot on their trail.
Not long after they’d cleared the canyon, that vehicle had started following them.
Su Cheng asked, “They already got half the supplies—why won’t they leave us alone?”
Tang Jin glanced at the rearview mirror. “Maybe their real target is this vehicle. It’s loaded with ammunition, and I’ve been guarding it the whole time. They didn’t get a chance to steal any of it.”
Just as she said that, a figure suddenly leaned out from the passenger side of the pursuing armored vehicle. The woman had silver hair and was holding a gun.
Tang Jin was driving like a maniac—both vehicles were speeding like something out of an action movie.
This time, Ling Yuexi fired directly at Su Cheng’s car and hit the tire.
The vehicle jolted violently, throwing Su Cheng toward the back of the car.
Tang Jin struggled to keep control of the steering wheel and calmly said in her flat tone, “Perfect, Chao Feng. There’s a detachable armored vehicle in the rear compartment. Half the supplies are loaded into it. Let’s split up.”
Wait, what? That was actually a thing? Su Cheng had no idea.
Looks like the book left out a lot of cool details…
She quickly crawled to the back and opened the iron door—sure enough, there was a smaller armored vehicle facing the rear.
She jumped into the driver’s seat, and as Tang Jin hit the release, Su Cheng slammed the gas. The smaller vehicle roared out the back just as the hatch closed.
Each of them now had half the supplies and sped off in opposite directions.
Su Cheng was quite pleased with her escape—until she spotted a motorcycle flying off the enemy’s armored vehicle in the rearview mirror.
!!!
What the hell?! These people don’t give up!
The silver-haired woman was now chasing her on a motorcycle, her mink coat billowing dramatically behind her.
It was the same woman who had leaned out the window earlier—Ling Yuexi.
Su Cheng’s heart sank deeply.
What a fated connection between the protagonist and villain…
Her palms were sweating, but she knew panic would only make things worse.
Perhaps the stress was affecting her mind, but suddenly she remembered PUBG.
In PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, you had to pull off some crazy maneuvers to escape in a situation like this!
The armored car suddenly began weaving in a wild, serpentine path. Ling Yuexi smirked and coolly fired three shots—each hitting a different tire.
Su Cheng: ???
Are you kidding me?! She’s totally cheating!
The armored vehicle spun out of control. Su Cheng slammed the brakes, trying to steady it.
After several dizzying spins, the vehicle finally came to a stop. She felt like throwing up, and just as she tried to catch her breath, a cold muzzle was pressed against the back of her head.
Su Cheng froze.
Ling Yuexi had activated a voice modulator to mask her real voice, and from behind came a soft, sugary baby voice: “Get out. Do as I say, or I’ll blow your brains out.”
???
It sounded like a toddler playing house.
What was this? Could she be uttering the most terrifying phrases in the most adorable voice?
Afraid of getting beaten up, Su Cheng quickly added as she got out, “Don’t hurt me, I surrender.”
Ling Yuexi: “…”
Su Cheng stole a glance at her. The woman was tall—almost the same height as her. Beneath her sleeveless mink coat was a tight black combat outfit. She had curves, a slim waist, and long legs—pure muscle, not an ounce of fat.
Her silver hair was tied into a long scorpion braid, casually coiled around her fair neck.
Su Cheng gulped involuntarily. Not gonna lie, this villainess was kinda badass…
She looked up and saw the woman was wearing a mask too.
A simple smiling face was drawn on it—complete with blushing cheeks.
???
Definitely not someone with a stable mind…
Su Cheng subtly sniffed the air—only the faint scent of herbs. Yup, she was good at hiding her identity.
The baby voice rang out again, “Had a good look? Then start moving the supplies to my bike. Take as much as you can.
Su Cheng froze, a bit embarrassed at being caught staring. But wait—how much could a motorcycle even carry?
As she turned to look, she was astounded by the size of the motorcycle.
The gun was pointed at her. At such a close distance, she didn’t dare do anything reckless.
Su Cheng slowly moved a box of ammunition onto Ling Yuexi’s motorcycle, silently crying inside. All the supplies she had worked so hard to gather… in the end, she still couldn’t escape being robbed.
A cutesy, babyish voice urged, “Hurry up”
It was the third time she heard that voice, and Su Cheng couldn’t take it anymore. She turned around and glared angrily at the silver-haired woman in front of her.
Damn it, the situation was so frustrating! She couldn’t even fight back—was there ever a protagonist as unlucky as her?
But when she met those smiling eyes behind the mask, all her fury felt like it had been punched into cotton…
The baby voice said, “What do you want to do?”
“Nothing. Just looking.”
They stared at each other for a moment. Su Cheng was the first to back down. She took a deep breath and said, “A friendly suggestion—you should consider changing your voice.”
Ling Yuexi, still wearing her smiling mask, shook her head lightly. The baby voice replied, “I like it”
Su Cheng felt as though she was unable to spit out the bl00d in her mouth. She could only tilt her head back and sigh, holding back her sadness as she continued to carry the supplies.
Damn it—she was actually moving her loot onto someone else’s vehicle with her own hands!
It wasn’t easy completing a mission, okay? Every contribution point was hard-earned, sob sob sob.
Ling Yuexi watched her gloomy figure—and then take a few steps. This Chao Feng… last time she was so headstrong, but this time she was surprisingly cooperative?
Seeing that most of the supplies were gone, Su Cheng finally couldn’t hold it in any longer. She spoke up, “Hey, Miss Hero… can we talk? Could you maybe leave me a bit so I have something to report back with?”
Maybe it was the smiling mask, maybe it was the cute voice—Su Cheng wasn’t sure what it was, but somehow she forgot how dangerous the person in front of her was.
Ling Yuexi seemed a little surprised. It was the first time someone had dared to bargain with her.
“You’re trying to negotiate with a bandit?”
When she responded, Su Cheng felt hopeful, so she continued, “Well, everything’s negotiable, right?” Life’s challenging for everyone. How about this—let me go this time, and next time you try to rob someone, I can secretly help you out. You could get more that way. Like those guys Suanni and Bi An—they’re super slippery. Normally, they’re not easy to rob.”
Sorry, comrades—better you than me.
Ling Yuexi shook her head. The baby voice said, “Hmm… but I think you’re the most slippery one”
Su Cheng was on the verge of sobbing.
In the end, Ling Yuexi actually left her a small portion of supplies.
Su Cheng stood in the wasteland, watching her figure disappear into the distance, on the verge of crying. Damn that Hong Xiuzhao!
A voice came through the earpiece—it was Tang Jin. “Chao Feng, how did it go on your end?”
Su Cheng sighed. “Got robbed. What about you?”
Tang Jin’s voice suddenly sounded a little awkward and shy. “Uh… it was fine. I held my ground.”
“……”
Why did she have to be the one to run into Ling Yuexi?!
Tang Jin connected to Su Cheng’s signal, and the two regrouped with Yu Fei and the Vanguard Army. Although less than half the supplies remained, it was enough to keep Longyu going for a while.
They owed this to Tang Jin—her half-load of ammunition had remained completely untouched. But no matter how they asked, Tang Jin kept dodging the details.
Yu Fei didn’t manage to catch the sniper, but unexpectedly encountered another member of Hong Xiuzhao. It turns out, that the giant robot was being controlled by a girl wearing a bunny mask.
At the time, the girl was sitting on the robot’s shoulder, retreating. Yu Fei’s surprise attack caught her off guard, forcing her to detonate the robot and escape.
Su Cheng, of course, knew that the girl was Hong Xiuzhao’s third-in-command—Pupu.
She turned and asked, “Suanni, what kind of mask did the person you ran into wear?”
Tang Jin’s expression stiffened as if she remembered something unpleasant, and she mumbled, “Uh… a fox, I guess.”
So it was Hong Xiuzhao’s second-in-command, Hu Ziyuan—the woman Tang Jin absolutely loathed.
When they returned to Longyu with the supplies, they were warmly welcomed by the people at the city gates. It was the first time Su Cheng felt like a hero being praised. She was genuinely moved.
She never expected that after living more than twenty years, she’d ever have a moment like this!
Yu Fei stood up and waved at the crowd excitedly. Then she turned back and said, “Chao Feng, you seem a lot more cheerful than before!”
The old Chao Feng didn’t care about things like this at all. She always acted alone, rarely spoke to anyone except to Mo Mei, and was cold as ice. Yu Fei had even been a little scared of her.
But after this mission, she felt like Chao Feng was somehow different.
Su Cheng was startled. She quickly reined in her expression and started spouting nonsense with a serious face. “Ahem, that sniper from Hong Xiuzhao was really strong. We fought for dozens of rounds without a clear winner.”
She glanced at Yu Fei and saw that she was listening seriously.
Su Cheng clasped her hands behind her back and continued acting mysterious, lowering her voice. “It’s been a long time since I’ve met such an exciting opponent.”
Yu Fei nodded. She understood that feeling. Just like today—running into the bunny girl made her really look forward to their next encounter.
But if that sniper could beat Chao Feng and steal her supplies… then not only was her marksmanship good but her close-combat skills had to be top-tier too. That meant the sniper was probably an S-rank Alpha! Oh my god!
Su Cheng saw the younger girl frown and fall deep into thought, and she let out a small sigh of relief.
Ah… she’s still just nineteen, after all…
Since that mission, the three of them had grown closer.
Yu Fei was lively, Tang Jin was gentle, and after going through life and death together, Su Cheng really enjoyed spending time with them.
And bit by bit, she was changing the way they saw her. After all, wearing the “main character” mask all the time was exhausting.
That day, Su Cheng was still training in the military camp. But for some reason, she felt unusually irritable.
It was that kind of mood—like nothing was wrong, but you just really wanted to blow off steam.
Even after finishing a full set of blade drills, she still didn’t feel better.
