- Chapter 4 - House of Fragrance
As someone of high rank, Su Cheng had her own private residence in the mid-level district. It was a small, stand-alone building where the members of Po Xiao lived.
As dusk fell, Mo Mei was in the kitchen preparing dinner. She glanced up at the clock on the wall. By this time, Su Cheng should’ve returned from the military camp.
Did something delay her? An uneasy feeling stirred in her chest.
Today just happened to be the first day of Su Cheng’s susceptibility period—a cycle that had come like clockwork for the past ten years.
After placing the food on the table, Mo Mei suddenly had a strange urge. Maybe it was that unique sixth sense Omegas have, but without thinking too much, she went straight into Su Cheng’s room.
The room wasn’t big, but it was neat and orderly. And right away, she spotted a bottle of suppressant medicine on the table—the kind Alphas needed during their susceptible phase.
She forgot to bring it?
A flicker of panic crossed Mo Mei’s face. It was already so late, and Su Cheng still hadn’t returned. Please don’t let anything have happened to her.
She still remembered that incident six months ago—Su Cheng had forgotten to take her suppressant after training, and her susceptibility hit just as Ya Zhi provoked her.
The two got into a massive fight, turning the military camp into a disaster zone. In the end, both of them were punished by Commander Qing Cang—thirty lashes each before it was finally settled.
Mo Mei didn’t dare delay. She grabbed the medicine and rushed straight to the camp.
By the time she arrived, Su Cheng had just left. Mo Mei searched the camp thoroughly but couldn’t find her anywhere.
At that moment, Tang Jin happened to pass by. Seeing the anxious look on Mo Mei’s face, she walked over and asked, “Sister Mei, what’s wrong? Do you need help?”
“I can’t find Chao Feng,” Mo Mei said. “Her susceptibility period started, but she didn’t bring her suppressant.”
Tang Jin noticed the bottle of medicine in Mo Mei’s hand and offered comfort. “Don’t worry, I’ll help you look for her.”
The two of them left the camp and asked the guards at the gate. A soldier told them that Chao Feng had just left, heading toward House of Fragrance.
Mo Mei’s face turned pale on the spot.
She knew House of Fragrance all too well.
Qing Cang had only refrained from dragging Su Cheng there by force because he wanted to win her over. To keep Su Cheng from worrying, Mo Mei had never mentioned it.
House of Fragrance was a paradise for Alphas… but a living hell for Omegas. Some Omegas never made it out alive.
Mo Mei’s complexion grew even whiter.
Tang Jin was surprised too, but she still believed Chao Feng wasn’t the kind of person who would go to a place like that. “Sister Mei, don’t worry. You head back and wait. I’ll go find her—maybe I can still catch up.”
Mo Mei knew she couldn’t go to a place like that herself, so she reluctantly handed over the medicine and returned to their residence, worry written all over her face.
******
Su Cheng arrived at the entrance of House of Fragrance, her long legs moving fast and steady.
The building had an elegant, classical style, like something out of Jiangnan. Located in the mid-level district, it was a bit of a walk from the military camp.
Several Beta soldiers guarded the front gate. They looked surprised when they saw her.
Her body felt hotter and hotter, as if something wild inside her was about to snap. She had the urge to bite anything in front of her.
Ignoring the soldiers’ reactions, she pushed forward and stormed inside.
As soon as she opened the door, waves of overpowering pheromones* hit her from every direction. (Pheromones- a chemical substance produced and released into the environment by a mammal affecting the behavior or physiology of others of its species.)
Her own pheromones reacted like an explosion—sudden, intense, and completely out of control. They burst out from her body, blanketing the room. The Omegas inside collapsed to the floor instantly, their legs going soft. Even the Alphas nearby were shaken by the sheer pressure of an S-class release.
Su Cheng gasped heavily, struggling to stay steady.
Holy crap… when did Longyu start keeping this many Omegas? She had only ever seen Mo Mei before!
At that moment, a gaudily dressed Beta madam swayed toward her with exaggerated enthusiasm. “Oh my, isn’t this General Chao Feng? What a rare guest!” As she spoke, a cloud of overly sweet perfume wafted toward Su Cheng, making her sneeze.
“Oh dear, you really should’ve let us know you were coming. Look what you’ve done—our poor Omegas are all out cold.”
“But no worries! I’ll have them carried to the rooms for you.”
“Now tell me, what kind of scent do you prefer? Fruity? Floral? Or maybe something more… exotic?”
“Scram.” Su Cheng’s head was pounding. She was already on edge, and now this woman wouldn’t shut up!
Even if she were the densest Alpha alive, she would’ve figured it out by now.
House of Fragrance—what a refined name. But this place was a straight-up brothel!
The Beta madam was used to dealing with aggressive Alphas. A little temper was nothing new. Su Cheng hadn’t even raised a hand, which in her eyes was already very polite.
She took one look at Su Cheng and figured she must be acting like a tsundere* (a person or character who swings between emotionally hot and cold, in particular when dealing with a love interest.)
because it was her first time being in a brothel.
She gave a knowing smile. “Oh, General Chao Feng, you’re so fierce~~ How about I send up ten to start with? Boys! Bring them up!”
Su Cheng almost collapsed on the spot. Hell no! Ten?! Are you insane?!
But she really was at her limit.
With one call, several well-trained Betas carried a group of Omegas upstairs, and the madam began dragging Su Cheng up as well.
“Let me tell you,” the madam chattered as she climbed the stairs, “during your susceptibility phase, you need to let it out. Medicine’s no good for you, you know! Especially for someone like you—an S-class Alpha! You have to take care of your body!”
Su Cheng’s consciousness was growing hazier by the second. The feeling of being controlled by sheer desire was unbearable! Her legs seemed to have a mind of their own. The scent of grape tequila drifted through the building like a hunter seeking the tastiest prey.
The ten Omegas brought in had been placed on beds or reclining chairs—both men and women, all stunningly attractive. It was their first time experiencing an S-class Alpha’s pheromones, and they writhed uncontrollably, with faces flushed and eyes filled with naked desire, tugging at their clothes in a frenzy.
This was the scene that greeted Su Cheng the moment she entered.
The madam shoved her in, slammed the door, and said with a grin, “Surprise! All for you! Enjoy yourself, General Chaoswind”
Surprise your damn SpongeBob!
Su Cheng leaned against the door, doing her best to suppress the surging desire in her chest. She stared at the half-naked bodies writhing throughout the room—and suddenly had the strangest thought.
Like a starving person faced with a table full of delicacies… yet unsure which one to eat?
None of them seemed right. She was incredibly picky.
In the midst of this chaotic mess of thoughts, an image flashed in her mind: a tall woman in black turned her head, a long silver scorpion braid coiled around her fair neck. A cute, smiling mask covered her face, cheeks flushed, and with the sweetest baby voice, she said softly:
“Bang~ You’re dead~”
Hiss—
Su Cheng swallowed hard. Her breathing grew faster.
Sh1t. Why did she suddenly think of that damn woman, Ling Yuexi?!
Several restless Omegas stumbled toward her, trying to throw themselves into her arms. But strangely, Su Cheng dodged them instead of giving in.
She was still burning up, but her mind felt a bit clearer. Grasping that clarity, she turned and kicked the door with all her might.
The wooden doors were blown clean off their hinges, flying outward—right as Tang Jin was walking by.
She flinched and barely dodged. A split-second later and her face might’ve been ruined.
Tang Jin exhaled slowly and turned her head toward the room, only to see Su Cheng standing there, breathing heavily with blazing eyes. Behind her, the entire room was full of half-dressed, glistening Omegas…
Tang Jin froze, glanced at Su Cheng with an incredulous expression, then quickly turned away, clutching the prayer beads on her wrist as she muttered, “So much sin… so much sin.”
What is this, a prayer session?
Su Cheng yanked her over and urgently asked, “Do you have suppressant pills?!”
Tang Jin’s brain hadn’t even caught up yet, but her hand already passed over the medicine bottle.
Su Cheng uncapped it and chugged it.
Tang Jin finally came to her senses. “Just one pill is enough!”
…
When Su Cheng opened her eyes again, she was back in that all-too-familiar hospital room.
This time, Mo Mei was leaning against the bed, seemingly asleep.
Who knows how long she had been out? Su Cheng tried to move but still felt weak.
Even the smallest movement stirred Mo Mei awake.
She rubbed her bleary eyes and looked at Su Cheng. Seeing her awake, she smiled gently and said, “Ah Cheng, how are you feeling? Do you want something to eat?”
The afternoon sunlight poured in softly, casting a gentle glow on Mo Mei’s delicate features. It made her look even more tender and serene.
Mo Mei was always like this—quietly taking care of her.
Su Cheng felt a sudden pang of guilt and sorrow. Her world’s “Ah Cheng” was long gone.
Sigh… better not tell Mo Mei the truth. Let her continue guarding me like the protagonist she believes I am.
Seeing the worry in her eyes, Su Cheng forced a grin. “I want a feast—everything from land and sea~”
Mo Mei relaxed at the teasing, reassured by Su Cheng’s good color and cheer. Then she frowned slightly and scolded, “Honestly, you’re not a kid anymore. How could you be so reckless? You’re not supposed to take suppressants like that!”
She’d already heard everything from Tang Jin. Although Su Cheng didn’t touch anyone at Mantingfang (House of Fragrance), she was furious that she’d taken the meds so carelessly, with no regard for her health.
Su Cheng just smiled sheepishly. This big sister of hers… even when mad, she was still so gentle.
“I panicked in the moment! I won’t do it again, I swear!”
Mo Mei suddenly lowered her head, with a voice soft then said. “Actually… we’re not related by bl00d. If you really can’t bear it, I could…”
“Jie,” Su Cheng interrupted her firmly, her voice serious. “Don’t talk like that. You are my real sister. I’d protect you with my life.”
A trace of bitterness flickered in Mo Mei’s eyes. The one closest to her… could only ever be her sister…
Su Cheng spent two days recovering at the clinic. During that time, both Yu Fei and Tang Jin came to visit—just to laugh at her.
Yu Fei bounced around like an overexcited monkey. “Hahaha oh my god, a one-vs-ten! That’s our Chaoswind!”
Su Cheng chucked a slipper at him. “One-vs-your-ass!”
“C’mon, tell us! What flavors did the madam pick for you?”
“Keep yapping and you’re banned from dinner at my place!”
“Hmph! Then I’ll go ask Sister Mei to cook for me instead!”
Mo Mei just smiled and said nothing.
Tang Jin shook her head helplessly. Then her expression turned serious. “Alright, Bi An, head back to the base. I need a word with Chaoswind.”
Once the room was empty, Su Cheng got up, threw on a coat, and dragged Tang Jin outside for some air.
It was stifling.
Not just the room. The entire Dragon Domain felt suffocating.
Ever since she learned the truth about Mantingfang, it was like a heavy weight had settled on her chest.
The original novel had hidden this part too well. No wonder the only Omega she’d ever seen in the Dragon Domain was Mo Mei.
Here, anyone who was classified into an Omega was forcibly taken to Mantingfang, to serve the upper class.
As for reproduction—during a resource shortage, it was a luxury. All Omegas were injected with a special drug that made pregnancy permanently impossible.
Su Cheng was shocked when she learned all this. If the protagonist hadn’t protected her all the way through the original story, Mo Mei probably would’ve ended up in Mantingfang too.
Su Cheng’s hand clenched tightly—she could hardly imagine it.
The two of them stood at the entrance of the infirmary, looking out over the dark and crowded lower district. The emaciated people toiled all day long, yet weren’t even deemed worthy of having names.
A heavy feeling suddenly settled in her heart.
Tang Jin hesitated for a moment before finally speaking. “Chao Feng, have you ever thought about what the purpose of Dawn really is?”
