- Chapter 42 - I Caught You
“I’m so lucky!” Shi Yunqi fired a burst of shots from her mecha while protecting Hu Ziyuan’s car, cursing, “I was wondering why I always feel uneasy! It’s fucking going to explode again!”
Man, seriously? What are the odds! She ran into them twice?!
Is there anyone luckier than her in this day and age?
Huh?
Anyone else?!
“Red Sleeves!” A squad of Vanguard soldiers nearby heard the commotion and rushed over. The moment they saw the three, they drew their swords and blocked the road. “Surrender now!”
The zombies were chasing them from behind, and Dragon Domain was blocking the way ahead.
“Are you nuts?! What a time for this! Get out of my way!” Hu Ziyuan frantically waved at the group, yelling as she drove, “Can’t you see the horde of zombies right behind us?!”
Everyone looked back at her words, and indeed, a massive, dense swarm of zombies was hot on their heels, flailing their arms and moving with terrifying speed like they were insane.
How could there be so many?!
“…Retreat, retreat, retreat!” Their teeth practically chattering, the leader waved his hand and led his squad in a desperate sprint.
In this life-or-death situation, Dragon Domain and Hong Xiu Zhao finally stopped bickering the moment they met, both factions scrambling to escape down the street.
The squad led by Yazhi were all elite soldiers. Though not high-ranking, they were all Alphas, much stronger physically than Betas.
The mechs and off-road vehicle gradually overtook the Vanguard. The latter, in a panic and perhaps fueled by the sheer terror of having a blade at their throats, ran incredibly fast, accelerating to catch up again. Hu Ziyuan even questioned reality when she glanced out the window.
Shi Yunqi and Pupu led the way, firing wildly at any zombies they saw. Mechs could fly higher, allowing them to see further and determine the best route. “This way!”
The Dragon Domain folks couldn’t care less about anything else; they just followed wherever the Red Sleeves crew ran.
“Hey, I have to say,” Shi Yunqi said, turning to see the whole group, a headache starting. “Weren’t you guys super tough? Why are you sticking to us like leeches?”
Their legs were probably churning so fast that their shoe soles were smoking, right?
Originally, everyone was on their own, fending for themselves. Whether they survived was up to their own abilities. But now, without rhyme or reason, they were all following them. If something really happened, could she just leave them to die?
Her answer was silence. The group just tacitly “latched on,” not a peep out of anyone.
“Alright.” Seeing their reaction, she knew they were glued to them. Shi Yunqi helplessly shook her head, focusing on clearing the path.
But even so, more and more zombies kept closing in. No matter which way they turned, the path behind them was getting harder to navigate.
The group’s retreat speed gradually slowed. This situation was just like the self-destruction incident Shi Yunqi had encountered back then. Once they were forced to stop, it wouldn’t be easy to get away.
The zombies blocking the front hadn’t even been cleared out yet, and those from behind were already catching up. Shi Yunqi’s heart pounded with anxiety. In truth, if it were just her and Pupu, they could still shake off this many zombies, but they couldn’t abandon Hu Ziyuan.
After repelling another wave of zombies, Shi Yunqi quickly glanced over at Hu Ziyuan’s side, and that look almost made her bite her tongue. “Hu Ziyuan! Watch out!”
Having been clearing the path ahead, she and Pupu had subconsciously overlooked the zombies already present in the buildings on either side.
Just then, the sound of breaking glass erupted. From the building behind them, several zombies burst through windows, showering shards as they leaped down into the crowd. Two of them managed to latch onto Hu Ziyuan’s car.
The Vanguard immediately drew their blades and began fighting the zombies. Various shouts mixed together, black, foul-smelling bl00d splattered everywhere, and the scene instantly turned chaotic.
Hearing the commotion behind her, Hu Ziyuan frantically swerved the steering wheel. However, those two zombies were incredibly stubborn. No matter how much she weaved, she couldn’t shake them off; their claws were still dug firmly into the car door.
In the midst of the chaos, something else went wrong. The tire burst, hitting who knows what, and Hu Ziyuan lost control. The entire car wobbled violently and careened towards a building on the side.

District 11 was so dangerous; she told Su Tang Jin not to make Ziyuan come! That Alpha had sworn to protect her, but where was she now?
Watching her in trouble, with Shi Yunqi and Pupu unable to intervene because they were dealing with the zombies in front of them, she screamed in exasperation, “Tang Jin, where the hell are you—”
Before she could finish, there was a “bang.” Someone stomped on the top of Shi Yunqi’s mech. The speed was too fast to see, but the force was so immense that it immediately buckled, dropping to its knees.
“…did you go?”
A golden light streaked across the night sky. In that instant, Hu Ziyuan thought her eyes were playing tricks on her.
A fleeting figure, seemingly walking on “colorful auspicious clouds,” descended from the sky. The moment before the car was about to hit the building, that person reached out and scooped her up from her waist, pulling her into a warm embrace.
Smelling the familiar sandalwood, Hu Ziyuan instinctively wrapped her arms tightly around her neck.
The Sanskrit text flared brightly. That person leaped from the car, swung a staff in mid-air, sweeping away dozens of zombies.
“Sorry, I’m late.” Holding her with one arm, rising and falling, the Prajna in her right hand continuously swung. In a few breaths, the zombies chasing behind were completely annihilated.
This terrifying strength, this was Dawn.
Nestled in the longed-for embrace, her heart, which had been terrified moments ago, was easily soothed.
“A-Jin…” Her eyes welled up, and Hu Ziyuan, with red-rimmed eyes, softly said, “No, you came just in time.”
As the sandalwood pheromone spread, the Dragon Domain members all looked their way. Seeing that the person was indeed Tang Jin, everyone erupted in joy. “It’s General Suan Ni! We’re saved!”
At the same time, three more mechs flew in from the sky. This group from Hong Xiu Zhao (Red Sleeve) had just encountered Tang Jin and had followed her all the way here.
With firepower doubled, the current disadvantage immediately turned.
“Tang Jin never breaks a promise to the Second Boss.” She only had time to say that before waving to the Vanguard. “Defensive formation! I’ll clear the way, mechs cover the rear, everyone full speed out of the city!”
As soon as she finished speaking, everyone cheered; their morale was soaring.
Flying ahead while holding Hu Ziyuan, Tang Jin’s peripheral vision caught sight of a white mech. She asked in confusion, “Yunqi, why are you on your knees?”
“Wha—how…?”
Shouldn’t that be a question for you?!
The previously silent Vanguard soldiers now popped up, one after another. “She’s probably just shocked by the sight of General Suan Ni’s divine power.”
“Psh, weren’t you all so tough just now? Why are you sticking to our General?”
“Exactly!”
“…” These brats! Got someone to back you up now, huh?!
“Yunqi, this is no time for fooling around.” Tang Jin sternly chastised her. With a sweep of her Prajna, a golden light shot forward, instantly severing all the zombies in their path.
Fooling around?!
I was just fighting for my life!
Shi Yunqi, still with her knee stuck in a hole, paused. “…You’re so amazing, so noble. How can you completely forget stomping on me just now?!”
Pupu sighed, flying her mech over and pulling Shi Yunqi out like a radish.
“Don’t worry,” Tang Jin said, rapidly leading everyone away, holding Hu Ziyuan with one hand and continuously swinging her long staff with the other. “Cheng Su has already gone to find the Big Boss.”
“Cheng Su?” Only now recovering from her rosy daze, Hu Ziyuan clung to her, her expression changing as she furrowed her brows and urgently asked, “How can she go alone?!”
The zombies were going crazy now! Plus, District 11 was so big, and she was a crippled Alpha. How would she find anyone?!
“I trust her.” Tang Jin’s gaze was unwavering; she spoke with such conviction.
She wasn’t a crippled Alpha; she was Dragon Domain’s strongest warrior.

Just like every mission, they each carried their own responsibilities, with clear divisions of labor. What you needed to do was ensure your own task was completed successfully, not be a burden to your teammates, and then help others.
She said if she went, she’d find Ling Yuexi for sure.
Because Su Cheng was the only Alpha Tang Jin truly admired in Dragon Domain.
The Search for Ling Yuexi:
…Ling Yuexi! “
The zombies had already self-destructed. Su Cheng disregarded everything else now, running and shouting at the top of her lungs. After circling the nearby streets several times in a state of anxiety, she suddenly heard several gunshots.
Unlike the powerful firepower of a mech, these gunshots sounded like a heavy sniper rifle, but not Ling Yuexi’s usual one.
This was clearly a Desert Eagle!
She only used handguns in close combat, so she might have already encountered zombies now?!
Enduring her injuries, Su Cheng immediately dashed towards the sound. Just as she rounded a corner, she saw a squad of Vanguard soldiers running towards her at the end of the street.
As the crowd fled, they were suddenly surprised to see a woman, covered in wounds and disheveled, running against their flow.
“…Hey! You’re running the wrong way! The zombies are behind you!” The leader tried to reach out and stop her, but she flung his arm aside, not even looking as she swiftly sped past him.
As she brushed past, the man turned back just in time to see the two Tang blades on her back—
He seemed to have seen them somewhere before…
*****
With rapid, consecutive shots, Ling Yuexi emptied a magazine, then her hands twitched, releasing it. The next second, with a flick of her fingers, she quickly whipped out two new ones from a pouch at her waist, her hands crossing in mid-air as both guns precisely clicked new magazines into place simultaneously.
Although she greatly shortened the time, more and more zombies were closing in, and most importantly, her bullets were running out…
Trapped on a rooftop, with an increasing number of zombies gathering below, Ling Yuexi glanced up in a hurry and suddenly saw a figure in the distance rushing towards her, against the flow of the crowd…
Her pupils gradually dilated. After recognizing the person, Ling Yuexi urgently shouted, “…Don’t come over!”
With so many zombies gathered here, even she couldn’t escape. Why was she coming over?! To die?!
They had only been separated for a short while, yet these three words made Su Cheng’s eyes instantly well up. She looked up at the rooftop, their eyes meeting, their gazes clashing in the air across the horde of zombies.
The person wearing a mask showed no expression, but Ling Yuexi could clearly see hers.
Even covered in wounds, she was rushing towards her recklessly, fearless in the face of death.
With just one glance, her heart felt as if it had been violently struck by something.
The run had sent bl00d rushing to Su Cheng’s head. Gritting her teeth, she swallowed the metallic taste in her throat, then drew the twin blades from her back and swung them with accumulated power towards the zombies. The blade energy instantly transformed into two streaks of blue light, crossing in an unstoppable force that cleaved through them.
The zombies in the path of the blue light were utterly severed, and the surrounding objects were sent flying by the blade’s energy. Even the building Ling Yuexi was on was affected, a section of its eaves cleanly sliced off.
The horde of zombies, previously clustered together, was forcibly split open by a gaping chasm.
“…Jump down!” Having rushed to the base of the building, Su Cheng set her blades aside and extended her arms towards her. “I’ll catch you!”
That previous strike had truly startled Ling Yuexi, but the situation was dire. Every second of delay, the opened gap would close up again.
She was safe on the rooftop, but Cheng Su was standing below. If the zombies re-clustered, they would engulf her almost instantly.
Even with so many questions in her mind, she couldn’t afford to hesitate for even a second.
Ling Yuexi looked at her deeply, then decisively holstered her guns and immediately ran along the rooftop. She launched herself from the edge of the eaves, leaping towards Su Cheng.
In truth, she didn’t need someone to catch her. How could someone who could climb down from a dozen-story building be lacking in skill?
But in that moment, one was willing to catch, and the other was willing to jump.
A soft, warm body filled her embrace, and her nostrils finally caught the familiar scent of lime and mint again.
“…I’ve got you.” Her voice choked. Su Cheng held the person tightly in her arms, burying her face in her neck and taking a deep breath.
You don’t know how dangerous the journey was, how many times I almost lost you forever.
“…Didn’t you want to be alone?”
“No.”
Never again.
