- Chapter 9 - Flirtations Unleashed
This person really was something else. Even with her eyes closed, she could still grab Su Cheng’s hand with uncanny precision.
Su Cheng tried pulling her hand back, but the woman on the bed only frowned harder and rolled over, throwing another arm around her.
Now both of Su Cheng’s arms were tightly locked by Ling Yuexi, and the back of her hand was pressed against that smooth, delicate cheek.
“Didn’t I inject her with a suppressant? Why is she still like this?” She had clearly read the instructions in detail—there was no way she’d messed up the process.
“You gave it to her?” Hu Ziyuan stared at Su Cheng in disbelief. “And she didn’t punch you?”
Impossible. Ling Yuexi wasn’t like other Omegas. When her heat came, she turned unpredictable. At her worst, she could trash an entire room. Even with Ziyuan and Pupu together, they couldn’t always restrain her. No one else in the village dared get close. Only when she exhausted herself could they finally administer the suppressant.
Su Cheng recalled the odd behavior from earlier. Although there were no punches thrown, she nearly had a breakdown instead.
“Don’t tell me she’s a defective Omega? Can’t be marked?”
Hu Ziyuan kicked her in the leg. “Just because you’re defective doesn’t mean others are too! Her glands are perfectly normal. She’s an S-rank Omega—there isn’t an Alpha alive who could resist her.” Then she added with a smirk, “Well, maybe except you.”
Su Cheng rubbed her leg and frowned. “Then what’s the reason?”
Ziyuan’s gaze dimmed slightly. She didn’t answer. Instead, she stepped forward and tucked the blanket around Ling Yuexi; her voice was low and serious. “She’s been burning up for a whole day. If it doesn’t go down tonight, we’ll have to consider other options.”
“I’ll stay and watch over her. You two go rest.” Su Cheng looked at her arms, still firmly held, and gave a helpless smile. “Not like I can leave anyway.”
Ziyuan raised an eyebrow at her. “You sure you can handle it on your own? Defective top and bottom?”
Su Cheng’s mouth twitched. “You serious right now? Don’t worry, I’ll take care of her. You’ve both been up all day—go rest. We’ll switch in the morning.”
Ziyuan figured that made sense. She and Pupu had gone a full day and night without sleep, and the dark circles were already showing. Besides, Su Cheng—being a defective A—wasn’t exactly a threat. Judging by how these two interacted… something was definitely going on.
“Then I’ll come by first thing tomorrow.”
“Okay.”
Ziyuan led Pupu out, leaving the room quiet and dim with only the two of them inside.
Su Cheng sat by the bedside, watching Ling Yuexi. This woman was like a child—she needed something to cling to in order to fall asleep. But since earlier, her breathing had become a little steadier.
Didn’t they say to strike when the iron’s hot—or, rather, take advantage of the sick? Su Cheng stared at her for a long while. Forget it. Even if she tried something now, she wouldn’t be able to run anyway.
So she sat there feeling bored, occasionally checking Ling Yuexi’s forehead and adjusting her posture. Even so, her arm was completely numb.
Just before dawn, Ling Yuexi’s eyelids fluttered and slowly opened. The first thing she saw was Su Cheng slumped by the bed, her arm still caught in her grasp.
So she’d held her hand the whole night.
Ling Yuexi’s face flushed. Like a stealthy little cat, she quietly tried pulling her hand back.
But Su Cheng woke up the moment she moved.
She rubbed her sleepy eyes, bleary and dazed. “You’re awake?” She tried to raise her arm and groaned, “Ow—damn, it’s dead.”
Ling Yuexi swiftly pulled her hand under the covers and asked coldly, “What are you doing here?”
Su Cheng rubbed her arm and, without thinking, blurted out, “What are you doing, pretending not to know me after you pulled your pants up?”
The second the words left her mouth, she froze.
Sh1t. Did I just say that out loud?! Damn early-morning brain fog!
“What did you say?” Ling Yuexi’s eyes narrowed dangerously, though her ears were visibly red.
Su Cheng grinned sheepishly, trying to play it off. “I mean, I wasn’t wrong, was I…?”
“Shut up!” Ling Yuexi glared and yanked the blanket over her head. I should’ve just left her to rot in the wild!
Watching her curl up like a turtle, Su Cheng couldn’t help but laugh.
Got it—Ling Yuexi is weak to flirting!
Su brazen beyond belief Cheng leaned closer and teasingly tugged at the blanket. “Don’t suffocate yourself in there—I’d feel terrible.”
Ling Yuexi held the blanket tightly, her muffled voice coming through: “Get lost. Who wants your sympathy?”
—
Why was she still acting like a child who needed coaxing?
Su Cheng sighed as she gave up trying to pull the blanket down. “Come on, be good. You’ve had a fever all day. Let me check—you’ll cook your brain at this rate.”
After a long pause, Ling Yuexi finally lowered the blanket, gripping the edges with both hands and glaring at her—silent and fierce.
She looked like a small, cornered animal.
Sickness truly sapped a person’s strength—even a killer like Ling Yuexi wasn’t exempted Normally, a glare like that would make someone tremble. But now, tucked into bed, her sharp edge had dulled. Her jade-like eyes were misty with fever, and her anger was outnumbered by embarrassment—three parts fury, seven parts bashfulness.
Even Su Cheng was taken aback, her heart faltering momentarily.
She instinctively leaned in. Ling Yuexi stared as she got closer until their foreheads gently touched, warm breath mingling between them.
There it was again—that soft scent. Su Cheng closed her eyes and inhaled lightly. The scent was a blend of lime and mint.
“She still has a low-grade fever,” she murmured, pulling back. “Want to eat something? I’ll cook.”
Ling Yuexi flushed and turned her head with a cold snort. “No need. I’m not hungry.”
“How could that be okay? You rest—I’ll make something light.” Even if you’re not hungry, I am, Su Cheng muttered internally as she got up, grabbing her cane.
Ling Yuexi peeked through one eye and watched her limp away. When Su Cheng turned to look back, she quickly shut her eyes again.
“Wait for your husband to return~” Su Cheng called out with a smirk as she left.
“Scram!”
“Hahaha!”
The village was still quiet in the early dawn. Su Cheng hobbled through the paths, glancing around. With no one in sight, she wandered for a while—but still saw no sign of Pupu’s mech.
Maybe there really was some secret base?
Eventually, she found the kitchen. The kitchen has a stone stove and a giant iron pot, epitomizing rustic living at its finest.
Su Cheng struck a match and lit some straw, carefully feeding in the wood. She nearly suffocated from the smoke, tears streaming down her face.
“Ai—how did the protagonist of the story end up like this?” she sighed, wiping her eyes as she continued stirring the porridge.
It took ages to finish, but it tasted decent. Once she was satisfied, she proceeded to serve another bowl to someone else.
—
Ling Yuexi had waited for ages before finally hearing movement. She looked toward the door and saw Su Cheng shoulder it open, porridge in one hand and cane in the other—her face was an absolute mess.
“You carried it all the way here like that?”
Su Cheng looked down blankly. Crap—she’d forgotten to find a tray or something. Her early-morning brain really was useless!
“Hehe…” She laughed awkwardly. “I was in such a hurry to bring it to you. Want to try?”
“Hm.” Ling Yuexi didn’t have much appetite but decided to accept anyway.
Su Cheng set the bowl down, then helped her sit up and propped a pillow behind her. After rinsing her mouth, she passed the bowl over.
“Still warm—perfect timing.”
Ling Yuexi took a sip, then asked suddenly, “Did you drink from this?”
Su Cheng waved a hand quickly. “Nope! I was thinking of you the whole time—how could I drink first?” She grinned and sat down at the bedside, eyes sparkling.
Ling Yuexi glanced at the corner of her mouth—still dotted with porridge—but said nothing.
Just then, Hu Ziyuan walked in and nearly dropped her jaw.
Was this the same Ling Yuexi who practically had to be tortured into eating during heat? Was she really the same person who had made the whole village cook fifty different dishes, only to nibble at half a bite?
Now she was quietly drinking porridge like an obedient child?
What was this, Su Cheng?
She turned and caught sight of Su Cheng’s face—then burst into laughter. “Pfft—haha, you, you…”
“…”
What the hell is wrong with this woman so early in the morning? Su Cheng frowned and looked at Ling Yuexi. “Do I have something on my face?”
The latter silently shook her head.
Then what’s so funny? Su Cheng was just about to find a mirror when a bowl was handed back to her.
“Maybe you’re just… nice to look at,” Ling Yuexi said.
“Then do you like it?” Su Cheng leaned in with a grin, her deep-blue eyes twinkling like stars.
Ling Yuexi’s jade eyes brightened, and her lips curved faintly. “I do.”
That smile stunned Su Cheng—her heart skipped again.
She cleared her throat to hide the blush creeping up her neck. Why didn’t the flirting backfire this time? Have I… leveled up?
Hu Ziyuan was laughing so hard that she could barely breathe.
With her echoing laughter behind them, Su Cheng scowled. This idiot diagnoses people? Really?
Three women, each with their own perspective, but she’s all convinced that the other two were crazy.
After finally regaining composure, Ziyuan checked Ling Yuexi’s pulse. “Once the fever’s gone, she should be fine. Just drink more water these next couple of days.”
After helping Ling Yuexi lie down again, Su Cheng stepped outside.
She hadn’t had enough to eat herself, and now villagers were starting to stir. She headed back toward the kitchen, hoping to scrounge some more food.
Along the way, everyone she passed smiled at her. At first, she was pleased. Am I getting prettier? Even Ling Yuexi said I looked good…
Then she bumped into the woman who’d guided her yesterday.
“Cheng Su, did you fall into the stove?! Your face is a mess—go wash up!”
Su Cheng froze, confused—until a horrible realization dawned on her. She hurried back to her hut, searching for a mirror.
When she finally found a small one and looked…
A layer of soot covered her face.
Ling. Yue. Xi.
No wonder she said she “liked it.” She was laughing at her!
Both of them had been putting on a show the entire time, with one performing worse than the other!
*****
Originally, Ling Yuexi just needed to continue resting, but unexpectedly, the low-grade fever lasted for three days and did not go away.
Hu Ziyuan quietly pulled Su Cheng outside the room, frowning as she said, “It seems the current medicine isn’t working. Last night, she had nightmares again. I’m afraid if we delay any longer, her condition will worsen.”
“So… we have no choice but to go out and try our luck,” Su Cheng replied.
She hadn’t expected it to come to this, but Ling Yuexi’s condition seemed to suggest some kind of psychological burden. Besides…
“Looking for medicine like this is like searching for a needle in a haystack,” Su Cheng mused, touching her chin. Hu Ziyuan probably thought the same—there was simply no better option.
Su Cheng sighed. “Actually, it’s not that we have no other way.”
