- Chapter 11 - Overnight Stay
As soon as Yu Peirong finished speaking, the system inside her mind started blaring with alerts.
[Warning! Warning! Host, please avoid breaking character. Current character integrity is down to 15%. If it drops below 50%, a yellow card will be issued again!]
No matter what she had done earlier, at least she had helped Qi Xiyao. But now, after saying something so flirtatious, the character collapse level started rising quickly.
Yu Peirong ignored the system’s frantic yelling and quietly glanced at Qi Xiyao.
The woman seemed startled by her earlier comment. She instinctively raised a hand to touch her slightly flushed, round earlobe. Then she suddenly remembered the gender secret Yu Peirong had quietly told her, so she coughed awkwardly and gave an embarrassed smile.
“It’s WYE’s mirror-finish lip gloss. If Sister Peirong likes it, I’ll give you one next time.”
WYE? Yu Peirong frowned slightly.
The name rang a bell. WYE was a new international beauty brand formed through a joint venture. No one had much hope for it at the start, but because of its quality and fair pricing, it quickly caught up to the major brands.
At first, since the brand was small and underfunded, they had actually considered Qi Xiyao as a potential spokesperson. But in the end, Yu Shang had pushed that opportunity toward someone else. Qi Xiyao, however, hadn’t complained. She still enthusiastically recommended several shades of the lip gloss to Yu Peirong.
Yu Peirong wasn’t sure whether to find her adorably naive or just oblivious. She tried to maintain a cold expression, the kind her character was known for, but Qi Xiyao’s genuine look of concern made it hard to keep up the facade.
“If you’d like to try it, I actually brought one with me.”
Before she even finished speaking, Qi Xiyao had already pulled a fresh tube of lip gloss from her purse and unscrewed the cap. Seeing that Yu Peirong hadn’t moved, Qi Xiyao somehow found the courage to lean in closer.
She had thought, since both of them were Omegas, it shouldn’t be a problem.
It was exactly because Yu Peirong was also an Omega that Qi Xiyao had let her guard down so quickly.
The moment the soft applicator touched her lips, a familiar sweet scent drifted into Yu Peirong’s nose.
WYE’s makeup products were especially popular among young women because of their pleasant fragrances. This particular lip gloss was called “Red Grapefruit Sweet Tea,” and naturally carried a faint citrus aroma.
The instant she smelled it, Yu Peirong’s first thought was that she might be cursed to deal with grapefruit for the rest of her life.
She was still young, but in her past world, she had been jokingly called a “virtuous national treasure.” To now find herself in a situation where she even had to wash her own underwear in this new world felt like a personal humiliation.
She used to love grapefruit. It had been her favorite fruit. But she had already made up her mind to cut it out of her life.
Even the scent was too much now.
Before she could even speak, Yu Peirong suddenly felt a cool sensation on her chin. Qi Xiyao had accidentally smudged the gloss outside her lips. The car was not shaking at all, since the autopilot drove smoothly, but Qi Xiyao, seeing the change in Yu Peirong’s expression, thought she had upset her. She quickly pulled her hand back, but in her haste, she moved too fast.
Qi Xiyao immediately apologized.
“Sister Peirong, I’m so sorry!”
Yu Peirong raised her eyebrows and instinctively wanted to say, “It’s alright.” But just then, she remembered the system’s earlier warning, so she held back and stayed silent. She simply grabbed a tissue, wiped off the lip gloss from her mouth, then crushed the grapefruit-scented tissue into a tight ball and threw it into the car’s trash bin.
The rest of the drive was silent. Yu Peirong closed her eyes as if resting, occasionally peeking to see what Qi Xiyao was doing.
Qi Xiyao’s face was flushed. She opened her mouth several times but didn’t speak, eventually falling into awkward silence.
It wasn’t until the car’s AI system spoke in its sweet voice that Yu Peirong realized she had brought Qi Xiyao back to her own home.
The destination had been preset to her address, and neither of them had noticed when they got in.
It was already past 1 a.m. It would be too inconvenient to send her back now. The house was big enough, more than enough for two people. Left with no choice, Yu Peirong decided to let her stay the night.
Honestly, everything about this situation felt like the start of some “two besties team up to destroy the scumbag” type of storyline. The more she thought about it, the weirder it felt. She didn’t actually want to become too close to the female lead.
Luckily, the house had a guest room. No one would have to sleep on the couch.
With her decision made, Yu Peirong smiled calmly and told Qi Xiyao it was her own fault, so she should just stay over for the night.
As the superior, Yu Peirong naturally had the final say. Qi Xiyao, as the subordinate, didn’t argue. She politely said it was no trouble several times.
The clothes she had worn at the banquet were dirty from the crowd and definitely not suitable for sleeping. Thankfully, the wardrobe was well-stocked with clean clothes. Yu Peirong found a brand-new nightdress, still in its packaging, and handed it to her before heading off to take a shower herself.
Yu Peirong had finished showering. Now it was Qi Xiyao’s turn.
Over time, Yu Peirong had more or less adapted to her Alpha identity. Carrying inhibitors with her had become a habit, and she always had some on hand. To support the lie she told Qi Xiyao about her gender, she had even bought a type of Omega pheromone “soothing spray.” It was essentially a scent-only pheromone blend. Yu Peirong had “accidentally” let it leak once, giving Qi Xiyao a sense of her supposed pheromone signature.
To fit her aloof persona, Yu Peirong naturally chose a cool, elegant fragrance as her “signature scent.” Before leaving the bathroom, she pinched her nose and sprayed a light mist of it into the air.
She thought everything was foolproof.
But after a while, with one earbud in and music softly playing from a random instrumental playlist, Yu Peirong suddenly heard Qi Xiyao calling her name.
Her voice was soft and trembling, with a delicate, timid tone. Compared to the background instrumental music, that sweet and slightly shaky Omega voice cut straight through her senses, making her fingers clench involuntarily.
Yu Peirong thought something had happened. She quickly yanked out her earbud, tossed it onto the bed, and rushed toward the bathroom.
But the moment she reached the door, she was hit by an overwhelming wave of grapefruit-scented tea.
The room was filled with the familiar, refreshing fragrance.
Her nerves immediately picked up on the subtle tension. Even though she had just drunk water, her mouth was dry again, and her heart began to race uncontrollably.
Was an Omega’s pheromone really this strong during a bath?
Why didn’t this woman try to suppress it at all?
Yu Peirong forced herself to calm down. Trying to ignore her erratic heartbeat, she gently knocked on the door and asked what was wrong. There was no answer.
She had a fairly patient temper and assumed the person inside just hadn’t heard her. So she knocked again, a little louder this time, and asked, “Are you alright?”
She thought she vaguely heard the word “forgot.”
The sound of running water stopped. But still, no reply came.
Yu Peirong’s instincts immediately kicked in. Alarm bells rang in her mind.
She suddenly thought about all those filthy tactics used at banquets and events. No matter how cautious one was, it was impossible to guard against every threat. A flash of memory rose in her mind—of the first time she met Qi Xiyao, her eyes filled with both confusion and determination, and her cheeks flushed with vulnerability.
Yu Peirong’s expression darkened. She called out firmly, “Qi Xiyao?”
She mentally counted to three. If there was still no answer, she was ready to break down the door.
But right at that moment, Qi Xiyao finally responded. Her voice came from inside, muffled and slightly weak, mixed with both embarrassment and shyness.
“Sister Peirong, please don’t come in. I… I forgot my bra.”
