- Chapter 20 - Small World II: Part 3
Su Chenli really, truly did not want to see Xie Xunyu again.
She knew perfectly well that this person was the “Devoted Supporting Role” in the small world’s storyline—and that forming a closer bond with her would help speed up task completion—but she still couldn’t suppress the instinctual urge to avoid her.
Why did she feel such strong aversion?
“System,” Su Chenli furrowed her brows and called internally, “is there something wrong with me? Are my stats off? Why do I dislike the Devoted Supporting Character in this world so much?”
She had been able to tolerate even the manipulative Zhong Li from the last world—so why did she immediately feel this strong rejection toward Xie Xunyu, who hadn’t even done anything yet?
That was really strange.
The system quickly responded.
【Hmm… Based on diagnostics, all your stats are within normal range. Except—your ‘Panic’ stat is off the charts… Host, are you feeling nervous?】
“Nervous? Me? That’s ridiculous.” Su Chenli shot back instinctively, almost defensively.
But the moment she said it, she realized that, deep down, her heart really was in turmoil—far more than usual.
What… was she afraid of?
What exactly was throwing her off?
“Su Chenli, right?”
Before she could find an answer, Xie Xunyu’s voice cut through the silence. She spoke while lowering her gaze, casually placing a stack of documents on the desk. Her tone was light, indifferent—borderline dismissive.
Chairman Su had already left. Now, only she and Su Chenli remained in the office, and Xie Xunyu’s demeanor had completely relaxed.
“…Yes, that’s me. What’s the problem?” Su Chenli replied with a touch of guilt, doing her best to maintain her airheaded heiress persona.
Xie Xunyu placed one hand lightly on the desk and studied her briefly before speaking.
“Since Chairman Su assigned you to me, I can’t just ignore you. Go talk to Administration and have them add a desk for you—right next to my secretary’s. You’ll get familiar with the environment first. In a few days, I’ll take you to attend some events.”
“Oh, okay… wait—what?” Su Chenli had started to reply out of habit, then froze mid-sentence.
“Where did you say I’ll be sitting?”
“Next to my secretary,” Xie Xunyu said flatly, glancing at her.
“What, you think you’ll just show up clueless and follow me to business events like a prop? Even if someone wanted to teach you, it’d be exhausting. I’d have to pay my secretary overtime.”
Su Chenli: “…”
Chairman Su had said that Xie Xunyu had a bad temper. Now she was starting to feel that firsthand.
Her beautiful professor would never say something like that!
Xie Xunyu, seeing that Su Chenli wasn’t responding, simply reached for the internal phone.
“Forget it. If you can’t handle the basics, I’ll call my secretary to deal with it. You just head over when it’s done.”
Su Chenli: “…”
Wait a second.
She hadn’t even said anything yet—how had Xie Xunyu already finalized everything on her behalf?
Apparently, Xie Xunyu had no intention of considering her input. She just made the arrangements on the spot, right in front of her, and Su Chenli didn’t even get the chance to object.
Even though she was extremely unwilling, Su Chenli knew she couldn’t afford to get into a standoff with Xie Xunyu. After all, she still needed to advance the storyline—and keeping close to this character was probably the fastest route.
Swallow the small stuff. Don’t ruin the bigger plan.
Patience today, victory tomorrow.
Zen.
As she mentally talked herself down, Su Chenli took a deep breath and stepped out of Xie Xunyu’s office.
And just in time to see a few staff members from Administration walking into the secretary’s area… carrying a desk.
A very brightly-colored desk.
Right in front of her, they positioned it beside Xie Xunyu’s secretary’s workstation. The contrast between the two desks—one sleek and professional, the other cartoonishly vibrant—made it look exactly like the kind of “special” desk teachers used to place beside their own in class.
The one reserved for troublesome students who needed watching.
Su Chenli: “…”
Now she was even more annoyed.
As soon as the secretary turned around and saw Su Chenli, she immediately smiled and greeted her warmly,
“Miss Su, you’re here! Come try out your seat—see if it feels right. If anything’s missing, just let me know.”
Su Chenli had nothing to say to that.
After all, Director Xie had already said teaching her would be exhausting.
Still, Su Chenli had no intention of taking it out on a random NPC. She was here to complete a mission. Compared to anything else, sticking to the storyline was the most important thing.
She sat down at her desk, pretending to be busy while quietly going over the original plot in her mind.
In this small world, the Devoted Supporting Role and the White Moonlight Omega heroine were in a boss-subordinate relationship. Xie Xunyu was the CEO of a listed company, while the Omega heroine, Sang Jianyu, was a low-ranking employee in the marketing department—someone who, logically, should have never appeared on Xie Xunyu’s radar.
But time and time again, Xie Xunyu noticed her.
Every time Sang Jianyu was bullied by coworkers or clients, Xie Xunyu would show up like a savior—solving the problem, protecting her. Slowly, the proud and closed-off Sang Jianyu began to open up emotionally.
It wasn’t until Su Chenli reread this part that she realized something:
That person she caught a glimpse of through the elevator doors before they closed—that silhouette…
It had to have been Xie Xunyu.
The figure. The posture. Everything matched.
So while Su Chenli and Chairman Su had been waiting upstairs in the office, Xie Xunyu had actually taken the time to go all the way downstairs—just to help Sang Jianyu?
She left her own boss waiting… just to come to the heroine’s rescue?
She really cares that much?
For some reason, Su Chenli felt an unfamiliar, tangled emotion bubbling up.
【Host, what’s going on with your mood? Your negative emotions are spiking.】
The system’s voice snapped her out of her daze.
Su Chenli immediately reined in her thoughts, but only a couple seconds passed before the system chimed in again, confused:
【Huh? That’s weird. Did I imagine it? Your stats have been bouncing around ever since we left the last world. Is my interface glitching?】
The system muttered to itself in confusion, but only Su Chenli knew the truth.
There was nothing wrong with the system.
Her emotions had been fluctuating—and the only reason no one noticed was because she was a trained actress. She could control what she showed on the outside.
But…
Why was Xie Xunyu affecting her emotions at all?
She loved only her beautiful professor. So why did she care so much about this supporting character in this world?
Tap tap tap—soft knuckles tapped against her desk, interrupting her train of thought.
Su Chenli blinked and looked up. Standing in front of her was Xie Xunyu’s pretty, kind-eyed Omega secretary, holding a stack of documents and smiling gently.
Su Chenli: “…?”
What now?
“Miss Su,” the secretary’s voice was soft and polite, but her next words made Su Chenli’s legs go stiff.
“These are profiles of the companies and organizations we currently work with, including summaries of the key people’s personalities and preferences. Underneath that is information on our core projects and major operations from the past year.”
She placed the thick stack of papers on the desk and smiled again.
“Director Xie asked that you familiarize yourself with all of this within the next two days. She may take you with her to meet some partners soon.”
Su Chenli: “…”
She looked down at the documents—at least 6 or 7 centimeters thick, all A4 size.
“…Did you say two days?” she asked weakly, unable to believe what she’d just heard.
Two days to read all of this?
Was Xie Xunyu trying to kill her?
Apparently, Xie Xunyu could push even harder.
The client files were just the intro. After Su Chenli barely survived those two days of cramming, more materials showed up—financial reports, summaries, and a mountain of PowerPoint slides.
Frustrated, Su Chenli stormed into Xie Xunyu’s office, fully prepared to protest.
But all she got in return was Xie Xunyu’s calm, indifferent reply:
“If there’s something you don’t understand, bring it here. I’ll teach you.”
Su Chenli didn’t want to be anywhere near Xie Xunyu—let alone taught by her.
The second those words came out of Xie’s mouth, Su Chenli lost all courage and fled.
She ran, pathetically.
After her failed protest, Su Chenli had no choice but to continue forcing herself through the documents.
As an arts student, she had never dealt with this much data before. She was practically drowning in spreadsheets—open her eyes, there were reports; close them, still reports. She didn’t even have the energy to deal with the system anymore.
Like that, nearly a week passed.
Then one day, just as Xie Xunyu stepped out of her office, she suddenly called out:
“Su Chenli.”
Her voice was, as always, calm and cool—measured and precise.
Su Chenli looked up instinctively from the mountain of papers and saw Xie Xunyu standing there in a dark, subtly patterned designer pantsuit that was both low-profile and luxurious. Even her heels had changed—higher than usual—making her figure appear taller and more elegant.
Her face, the one that constantly reminded Su Chenli of Jiang Youning, was expressionless, her gaze distant and cold. That hint of aloofness in her features made her look even more captivating.
Her lips were soft and glossy, as if she’d just reapplied lipstick. Every part of her outfit had been chosen with meticulous care, down to the perfectly arranged strands of hair—everything working in harmony to highlight her powerful presence.
Before Su Chenli could even react, Xie Xunyu glanced at her watch and said flatly,
“Don’t just sit there. You’ve got fifteen minutes—get ready. You’re coming with me to a brand launch event.”
Brand launch event?
Su Chenli blinked, and suddenly realized—she’d forgotten something important.
Thanks to all the work Xie Xunyu had dumped on her, she still hadn’t finished reading the original story. All she’d managed was to skim through the highlights when she could sneak a break.
But this particular launch… she did remember.
Panic creeping in, Su Chenli poked the system in her mind:
“Hey, hey, this launch—this is a key plot point, right?”
【Yes, Host!】
the system popped up right away.
【This brand launch is indeed a major turning point. In the original story, the “official Alpha love interest” is Sang Jianyu’s first love from her school days. Sang was forced to break up with them under pressure from her mother, and the Alpha has always believed Sang is just a shallow, status-chasing Omega.
They’ll both attend the event, and during their public reunion, the Alpha humiliates her. Xie Xunyu, the devoted supporting role, steps in to defend her. In the process, she experiences a sudden pheromone outburst, leading her to mistakenly think she did something inappropriate to Sang Jianyu. She feels so guilty afterward that her feelings start to shift—this is the key moment where her affection begins to deepen!】
…Just as she thought.
The system’s explanation confirmed Su Chenli’s suspicion.
This brand launch was a turning point in the entire storyline. Without it, Xie Xunyu might never develop deeper feelings for Sang Jianyu—just a surface-level fondness.
And Su Chenli, who just wanted to push the story forward as quickly as possible, couldn’t afford to miss this opportunity.
She also realized that now was the perfect chance to test a theory she’d been nursing ever since she left the last world.
She raised her eyes to look at Xie Xunyu again, recalling a thought that had been slowly taking shape in her mind.
If, according to the system, the world wouldn’t collapse as long as all the “clearly written” plot points still happened in a logically consistent way…
Then why couldn’t she rewrite the motivations behind them?
If the AO pairing had to fall in love, why did they have to follow the exact same path?
Why couldn’t she be the one to set the stage for their bond?
If she played it bold enough—anything was possible.
As for the pheromone outburst scene…
Well, she and Xie Xunyu were both Alphas, so it wasn’t like anything would actually happen.
Let her go through it instead.
