I Was Reincarnated in a BL World, but as the Villainous Younger Brother of the Protagonist, So Please Leave Me Alone - CHAPTER FOUR
CHAPTER FOUR
The falling yellow leaves flutter down gently, as if their role in this world has been fulfilled. I walk along the tree-lined path with my overprotective older brother, who has become even more attentive since the Momochu incident. It’s Sunday today, a day off from school. After spending a relaxed morning at home, we’re now strolling to the supermarket to buy ingredients for dinner.
Since the Momochu incident, my brother’s discomfort around girls has only intensified. Now, if a girl asks him to walk home together, he bluntly replies, “No.” Each time this happens, I end up being unfairly glared at, and my brother, ever vigilant, reacts by glaring back at the girls. This new behaviour has reduced the unpleasant comments from girls, making our daily life far more comfortable.
“Yuito, what do you want for dinner tonight?” My brother’s voice, always gentle and warm, wraps around me like a comforting embrace. I can’t help but feel a pang of guilt. Many girls would love to hear this sweet tone, and I, as the villainous younger brother, selfishly enjoy it all to myself.
“Yuito…?”
Noticing my distant gaze and sigh, my brother stops walking and grasps my shoulder. “Yuito, is something wrong? Are you tired? If someone has been bothering you, tell me immediately.”
He peers at me with an extraordinarily beautiful and serious expression. His overprotectiveness may seem excessive, but given that my occasional entanglements with his female acquaintances have caused him distress, his concern might be justified. I decide to accept this reasoning.
“…It’s nothing. I was just thinking about what to eat.”
“Oh… I see. If that’s the case, it’s fine.”
Though he seems unconvinced, he generally yields when I show that I won’t say more. With a resigned but kind smile, he pats my head.
“Let’s have hamburgers tonight. I want to eat your hamburgers, brother.”
“Sounds good. Then I’ll have you make the potato salad.”
With the menu settled on hamburgers and potato salad, we arrive at the supermarket. As we enter, we see parents with children and elderly couples shopping happily. In the vegetable section, I spot some appealing sweet potatoes.
Roasted sweet potatoes… university sweet potatoes… sweet potato soup sounds good too…
I follow my brother, who is ahead of me, shaking my head to clear the thought of unnecessary spending. I mustn’t waste money just because I want something.
“Ah, brother. We should buy milk soon too.”
“Right, we’re running low.”
My brother often makes me hot milk, which I enjoy, so we always keep a stock of milk at home. It’s an important drink for us both. As we add two bottles of milk to our cart, my brother suddenly remembers something.
“Yuito, we’re also running low on dish soap. Could you grab some refills? I’ll head to the meat section.”
“Okay, got it.”
I go to the dish soap section but find that the usual refill is out of stock. I pick a slightly more expensive alternative and head back to my brother.
“Brother, the usual one was out, so I got this instead.”
“Ah, that’s fine. Thanks.”
He places the soap in the cart and pats my head. Embarrassed, I move forward, avoiding his hand, only to hear a soft chuckle from behind. Looking back, I see my brother’s delighted and happy expression.
“…Is something amusing?”
“Hmm? Everything is fun when I’m with you, Yuito.”
His smile seems so genuine that I feel a strange discomfort and lightly bump him as a form of protest. To him, even such small actions are endearing, and he continues to smile at me.
“Brother, you’re making me embarrassed lately…”
“What? That’s not true. Being with you makes me happy, and feeling happy is a wonderful thing.”
The word “happiness” resonates strangely within me. I glance at my brother’s face, but he continues to smile and shop. I wonder why I feel unsettled. Perhaps it is jealousy, but it is different from the usual jealousy I might direct at him. It feels more like a deep sadness.
From what my sister told me about the original game, the villainous younger brother either ends up in a facility in the happy ending or hangs himself in the bad ending. My sister cried over the words spoken when the character was sent to the facility. I remember her tears but not the exact words. I only recall her tearfully vowing to make him happy.
As I focus on recalling these details, my brother grabs my arm.
“Yuito, watch out. You’ll bump into the shelf.”
“Oh, sorry.”
The bread shelf is right in front of me. Without my brother’s intervention, I would have crashed into it.
“Let’s head to checkout.”
With that, our shopping ends, and we make our way home. On the way back, even though I offer to carry the lighter bag, my brother gently insists on holding the heavier one. I reluctantly carry the lighter one and walk beside him. Upon reaching home, it’s just in time for dinner.
My brother tells me to bathe first, so I warm up in the bath after the chilly outside. Meanwhile, my brother starts preparing hamburgers, and I will make the potato salad as soon as I’m done. I wash my hair, my body, and soak in the bath. Previously, I would finish my bath without soaking, but my brother, unusually stern, insisted I properly warm myself in the tub.
“Warm yourself properly in the bath! You’ll catch a cold!”
Since then, I make sure to soak, but I leave the bath a bit early to avoid overheating. I dry my body, my hair, and get dressed. When I return to my brother, he asks:
“…Your hair?”
“It’s fine, it’ll dry on its own.”
“…Your hair?”
“…I’ll dry it.”
My brother’s overprotectiveness knows no bounds. He worries about catching a cold, even scolding me to dry my hair. When he scolds me, it’s usually out of concern for my health.
After thoroughly drying my hair, I join my brother in the kitchen. Thanks to his pre-cooked potatoes, making the potato salad is quick, and the hamburgers are also cooking. The food is prepared swiftly, and we set it on the table.
“I’ll get the drinks. Please sit down.”
As he seats me at the table and goes to fetch the drinks, I think about how I could handle this task myself, but he has already seated me, so I wait silently. When my brother returns with the drinks, he places an additional dish on the table.
“Brother, what’s this?”
“I noticed you were eyeing the sweet potatoes. I thought you might want them, so I made them while you were in the bath.”
On the table are the university sweet potatoes I had been craving. They seem out of place with the hamburgers but are deliciously prepared just for me.
“Well then, Yuito, let’s eat.”
“I—I’ll eat now.”
I pick up a sweet potato with my chopsticks and bring it to my mouth. The sweet potato is perfectly sweet and pleasantly warm, making me smile naturally.
“Is it good?”
“Yes, very much.”
My brother, also smiling, continues eating. The hamburgers, sweet potatoes, and even the potato salad I made, all taste wonderful.
“Thank you for the sweet potatoes, brother.”
As I enjoy the delicious sweet potatoes, my brother watches me with a contented smile, though I don’t notice his expression of happiness. Then, I remember the words from the happy ending of the game. The villainous brother, as he is sent to the facility, says:
“Brother, please be happy for my sake too. I’m sorry for taking away your happiness.”
He then hangs himself at the facility. Both endings feature the same tragic outcome, which had made my sister cry.
I remember this now. That’s why the word “happiness” struck a chord with me. I won’t end up like that. I refuse to become a villain. Though the jealousy lingers, I want my brother to be happy.
I won’t end up that way.
