I Woke Up And Found Myself Married - Chapter 16
Yu Wei saw Ji Fuyi from afar, her golden hair draped over her shoulders, covering the hickey. Her face looked a little pale.
Ji Fuyi clearly saw her too. She frowned slightly, showing a trace of confusion, but her steps didn’t stop as she continued walking toward the lobby.
“Fuyi,” Yu Wei walked up to her and tried to keep her voice calm. “Wait a moment.”
Ji Fuyi stopped in front of the glass doors, seemingly lost in thought.
Yu Wei pointed to the seating area nearby and said, “Just five minutes.”
Ji Fuyi shook her head, her lips pressed into a thin line. She waved her hand dismissively and walked through the glass doors.
Yu Wei instinctively wanted to follow her, but reason told her to stop. Chasing after her now would only make Ji Fuyi resent her even more.
She bit her lip and stood still, glancing once again at her phone. The message she had sent Ji Fuyi had been marked as read, but there was still no reply.
Yu Wei let out a quiet sigh and decided to drive home.
She needed to take care of the fiancée situation as soon as possible. Otherwise, what right did she have to face Ji Fuyi again?
Driving quickly through the streets, a gentle song floated out of the speakers, bringing her a fleeting sense of peace.
When Yu Wei opened the door to her apartment, it was just about lunchtime.
Her father was reading the newspaper. Seeing her, he shook it out with a snap and said, “So, you finally decided to come home?”
“Mm,” Yu Wei pulled out a chair and sat at the dining table, ladling herself a bowl of soup. “I need to talk to you.”
Her tone was unusually serious. Both of her parents could sense that something was off.
Their youngest daughter had always been cheerful and mischievous, rarely speaking in such a serious manner. Even when discussing her study abroad plans, she had been lighthearted. The sudden change in tone made them both uneasy.
Her father cleared his throat and tried to maintain his authority with a sharp cough. “What is it you want to say?”
Yu Wei put down her bowl and looked him straight in the eye. “I won’t meet the fiancée.”
“You won’t know until you meet her,” her father scoffed, clearly dismissing her words. “You don’t even know who she is! Look at yourself—does that make any sense? The engagement’s been settled for so long. Have you even looked at a picture?”
Yu Wei sighed internally. It was the same old complaints. Her father had never taken her words seriously.
“No, I haven’t seen her, and I don’t know who she is,” she replied.
She paused for a second before continuing.
“And I don’t need to know.”
That was a direct challenge to her father’s authority. Before he could erupt in anger, Yu Wei met his gaze calmly, suppressing his outburst with just her look.
“I don’t need to know who she is. I don’t need to know which family she’s from. I just know that I don’t need a fiancée, and I won’t marry someone I have no feelings for.”
Her father was briefly silent, about to say something more, but Yu Wei continued.
“I understand the purpose of this arranged marriage. If it’s to serve your goals, then you shouldn’t treat me this way. It’s unfair to me.”
“I appreciate everything you’ve done for me,” Yu Wei said calmly, “but I also have the right to choose my own life.”
Her father sighed and pushed aside the newspaper. For the first time, he softened his tone with his daughter. “Just have one meal together, okay? Just you two—no interference from us adults. See if there’s any chemistry.”
“No need.”
Yu Wei shook her head. “I’m going on a business trip tomorrow. Please cancel the engagement. Thank you.”
Her father and mother exchanged glances, both understanding what she meant. The business trip was clearly an excuse. If they didn’t cancel it, she might never come back to this house again.
Her father tried to smooth things over. “Alright, it’ll be canceled.”
Yu Wei nodded. “Good. See you next time.”
Her father watched her leave, a shadow passing over his face. His once obedient daughter had now become so stubborn.
“What do we do about Weiwei?” her mother asked anxiously.
“Let her be!” he frowned deeply. “How can an engagement be treated so lightly?”
Back at the house, Yu Wei felt a sense of relief, unaware of the storm brewing at home. She booked a flight to City A.
Meanwhile, at Ji Fuyi’s office.
Her office was on the top floor. Behind the glass doors was a spacious lounge area, complete with comfortable sofas and tall potted plants. Beyond that was her actual office.
Lin Xia was already waiting for her inside, and her personal assistant, Yu Shu, was also there.
Ji Fuyi nodded at Yu Shu, signaling her to wait a moment, then turned to Lin Xia. “When’s the meeting?”
“In half an hour. Do you want to rest a bit first?” Lin Xia looked at her pale face with concern.
Ji Fuyi was about to refuse, but seeing the worry on Yu Shu’s face, she said to Lin Xia, “I’ll rest a bit. Call me when it’s time.”
After Lin Xia left, Yu Shu immediately stood up from the sofa, looking at Ji Fuyi with urgency.
Ji Fuyi gave her a helpless look and motioned for her to sit down. “What’s going on? Why did you come to find me here?”
As her personal assistant, Yu Shu usually handled her day-to-day needs and rarely appeared at the office.
Yu Shu handed her a glass of lemon water and gestured for her to drink it first.
Ji Fuyi set the glass on the table, raised an eyebrow, and asked, “So? What happened?”
Yu Shu took a deep breath and said, “I just came from your mom’s place. She got a call… They said you have a fiancée.”
Ji Fuyi froze for a moment, wondering if she had misheard.
What did Yu Shu just say? She had a fiancée?
Even Ji Fuyi couldn’t hide the disbelief on her face.
“You said what? I have a fiancée?”
Yu Shu nodded. “Yes. Your mom just told me. She asked you to go home as soon as possible.”
“I never knew about this before?”
“She just found out too,” Yu Shu frowned. “It’s all so sudden—I had to come in person.”
Indeed, this wasn’t something that could be explained over the phone.
Ji Fuyi found herself distracted during the meeting for the first time. The news that she had a fiancée hit her like a bombshell, leaving her unable to focus.
After the meeting, her manager called her into the office.
Yu Yiyi got straight to the point. “Fuyi, did you change suppressants recently?”
Ji Fuyi gave a slight, ambiguous smile. Her heat had come unexpectedly, and she hadn’t informed the company. Yu Yiyi must’ve smelled something different today to ask that question.
Ji Fuyi simply shrugged and said, “It’s my heat. The meds didn’t help. I got an Alpha to mark me temporarily.”
Back when Yu Yiyi found out Ji Fuyi had differentiated as an Omega, she had been mentally preparing for this day. Now that she finally heard it, she felt oddly relieved.
“Was it safe?” Yu Yiyi asked. “Is this person reliable?”
“Yeah,” Ji Fuyi’s heart gave a faint throb. “She won’t say anything. Besides, she could smell my scent even with the suppressants. There’s no point in hiding it.”
Yu Yiyi nodded knowingly. “If she can smell it through suppressants, that might be the legendary 100% compatibility. Any thoughts on that?”
Ji Fuyi shook her head and gave a bitter smile. “I just found out she has a fiancée. I’ll deal with it.”
Yu Yiyi sighed regretfully. “What a shame.”
“Yeah. I just got a call from my mom—I have a fiancée too,” Ji Fuyi’s bitter smile deepened. “Sorry for the trouble.”
Yu Yiyi was momentarily speechless. After a pause, she asked, “You never mentioned this before. Is it a new arrangement?”
Ji Fuyi: “Yeah. Apparently, my mom just found out too. I’ll go home first and get back to you.”
Yu Yiyi waved her off, full of worry. “Go ahead.”
As soon as Ji Fuyi opened the door at home, she was hit by the smell of tomato beef stew. Her heart eased a little, and she forced a smile as she called out, “Mom?”
Her mother rushed out from the room, took the bag from her hands, and said, “Fuyi, you’re back! Tired?”
“Not at all,” Ji Fuyi smiled brightly. “How have you been?”
Her mother was a beautiful woman with a soft, fragile air that evoked protective instincts. Her voice was delicate as she answered, “I’m good. Fuyi, what about the fiancée thing? Your dad said if you won’t get married, he’ll make me pay for it.”
Ji Fuyi sighed deeply. As expected, he was threatening this woman again.
Her mother was her father’s second wife. Shortly after giving birth, she had been abandoned and lived in a shabby apartment, barely scraping by on alimony. As a child, Ji Fuyi had once asked why they lived like this if her father was rich. Later, she stopped asking. After her film debut, she moved her mom into a better home. But her mom always seemed shackled to the man, still mistreated despite everything.
“You believe everything he says?” Ji Fuyi asked helplessly.
“He’s powerful and influential! Look—” Her mother handed her a financial magazine, her father’s serious face on the cover. “He’s even more important now.”
Ji Fuyi put the magazine aside. Her eyes fell on the mating mark on her mother’s neck, but she said nothing.
“Fuyi, please. Just meet her once, okay?” Her mother, panicked by Ji Fuyi’s silence, pleaded.
“He’s rich and powerful, and he still wants to sell his daughter?” Ji Fuyi sneered. “You still don’t see it after all these years?”
Her mother was stunned for a moment and grabbed her sleeve. “You can’t say that. Maybe he’s just introducing you. Maybe it’ll be a good match.”
Ji Fuyi was about to reply, but Yu Wei’s face suddenly appeared in her mind. Her situation had to be different—surely it wasn’t the same kind of arranged engagement.
Maybe that girl had her own story. Maybe that’s why her dad called, wondering why they hadn’t met yet.
A confusing swirl of emotions rose in her chest. Looking at her mother’s pleading expression, Ji Fuyi finally shook her head and said:
“When are we meeting?”
