I Woke Up And Found Myself Married - Chapter 19
After the words fell, a few whispered arguments could be heard at the door, too faint to make out clearly.
That voice… it really did sound like Yu Wei.
The slightly raised ending, drawn out and soft with a hint of sweetness—even when angry, it lacked any real force. It just made one want to reach out and ruffle her bangs.
The person at the door lingered, not coming in for a long while, seemingly held back by countless hesitations.
Finally, Ji Fuyi heard a soft rustle at the entrance. Then bang—the private room door closed, and a silhouette appeared, its shadow cast through the screen onto the floor.
A familiar scent of mint gradually filled the room. Ji Fuyi took a gentle breath, and the mark on the back of her neck began to burn slightly.
She lowered her head. Without even looking, she knew the corners of her eyes were slightly red.
She suddenly realized how much she missed that scent—how inappropriate such a feeling was, especially right before meeting her arranged match.
Biting her lip, Ji Fuyi reminded herself to stay calm. No matter who came in, she couldn’t give herself away.
Yu Wei stepped into the room, and a large folding screen stood between them, temporarily dividing the space and giving her a moment to collect herself and settle her nerves.
She stood behind the screen, not moving further, only letting out a light cough, preparing to say what she’d rehearsed.
Yu Wei figured—since her refusal had been ignored and she was forced to come anyway—she might as well take this opportunity to make her position clear, so there would be no further misunderstanding.
Inside the room, Ji Fuyi rested her chin on one hand, waiting for her blind date to enter. She hadn’t expected that person to just stop there, clearly not intending to even show their face—just planning to talk through the screen.
What kind of blind date doesn’t even show up properly?
Just as Ji Fuyi was feeling puzzled, the person outside spoke.
“Hello, I’m Yu Wei. I’m really sorry, but this whole blind date is a complete misunderstanding…”
Yu Wei spoke stiffly but fluently. Nervousness leaked from every word, as if she had practiced this speech countless times and was finally letting it out.
“I’ve never had any desire to get married. This marriage was arranged entirely by my family. I’ve already made it clear that I wanted to cancel it, but they used other excuses to trick me into coming today. Since I’m already here, I think it’s best we clear things up.”
Ji Fuyi felt a strange sense of absurdity.
That really was Yu Wei out there.
Not someone with a similar voice. Not someone with a similar scent. It was her—truly her.
Yu Wei was her blind date?
Ji Fuyi’s mind suddenly replayed the words she had once said: “Your fiancée would never be me.”
She was speechless. What she’d been so confident in had just turned around and slapped her in the face. Yu Wei’s fiancée… was her.
For a moment, Ji Fuyi recalled all those vague feelings of jealousy, mixed with the scent of mint. All her discomfort now felt like a joke.
Yu Wei had said she’d never met her fiancée. Ji Fuyi hadn’t believed it—but now, she did.
Outside, Yu Wei was still talking, laying out all her logical reasons for refusing the marriage—flowing arguments, solid points.
Ji Fuyi propped her chin on her hand and listened casually. Oddly, her mood lightened.
Whatever the reason Yu Wei didn’t want the marriage but came anyway—at least regarding not knowing her fiancée’s identity, she hadn’t lied.
Ji Fuyi now found herself a little curious. If Yu Wei walked into the room and realized her fiancée was her, what kind of expression would she make?
Yu Wei stood behind the screen, growing anxious at the silence. She instinctively felt the person inside was stubborn, not someone who could be persuaded easily. Something also seemed off.
When she entered the room, she had noticed a familiar scent—one that smelled a lot like Ji Fuyi’s.
Images of Ji Fuyi flashed through her mind. Ji Fuyi sometimes smiled like that—helpless and amused. Sometimes she would shake her head with a slight smile, sometimes speak in a soft, teasing tone that completely captivated her.
Every smile Ji Fuyi gave made Yu Wei fall harder for her.
That soft, cold fragrance surrounding her only deepened Yu Wei’s longing.
If she hadn’t realized it before, she was certain now: she liked Ji Fuyi.
Then a thought struck her—what if she told this person she was already in love with someone? The person her father picked was surely some upper-class young lady who wouldn’t tolerate her fiancée having someone else in her heart. Maybe she’d cancel the engagement on the spot.
Yu Wei lowered her voice and said:
“There’s nothing wrong with you. I just… already have someone I like. I really can’t go through with this marriage. So, if it’s possible, I hope you’ll agree to cancel the engagement.”
Someone she likes?
Ji Fuyi had been quietly listening, wondering how long Yu Wei would go on before stepping inside. But at those words, her brows instantly furrowed.
She had known Yu Wei for quite a while, and Yu Wei had never once mentioned having someone she liked. Not to mention, she had been practically living in Ji Fuyi’s bed.
Ji Fuyi had assumed, like herself, that Yu Wei had no real feelings—but also no one else either.
So now, Yu Wei… had someone in her heart?
In that instant, Ji Fuyi recalled that party when Yu Wei’s friends teased her about kissing every lipstick flavor, saying she had charmed everyone in A Country without ever getting tied down…
That same discomfort crept back in, mixed with a wave of irritation. Ji Fuyi’s opinion of Yu Wei dropped sharply.
Yu Wei still heard no response and grew increasingly nervous. She had been so determined to handle this today—but now she was beginning to worry.
“I’m really sorry. I just… can’t marry you.”
“This marriage was based on our parents’ arrangements. It’s unfair to both of us. I don’t want either of us to have regrets in life.”
Yu Wei added sincerely:
“Can you… agree to cancel the engagement?”
Hearing this, Ji Fuyi finally let out a cold laugh and said:
“Yu Wei, you really want to cancel the engagement that badly?”
Yu Wei froze instantly.
That voice—she’d recognize it anywhere.
Ji Fuyi.
Her short-circuited brain suddenly reconnected. She rushed into the room, eyes wide with disbelief as she looked toward the table.
It really was Ji Fuyi.
She rubbed her eyes, not trusting what she was seeing.
Then she looked again: golden hair, red lips, a pale, elegant neck, a small off-shoulder dress outlining her delicate collarbones—her dream person, right there.
Yu Wei stood frozen, stunned. The heavens had played yet another cruel joke on her.
She had never imagined this. She had a fiancée. Ji Fuyi had a fiancée. And somehow—they were each other’s.
How had she not figured this out? Their circle was so small. If both of them suddenly had fiancées—why couldn’t they be each other?
When she burst in, Ji Fuyi greeted her with a half-smile, clearly savoring her awkward reaction.
“Fuyi… I didn’t expect this…”
Yu Wei clutched her head, completely dumbfounded.
“I never imagined it’d be you!”
“Neither did I,” Ji Fuyi said tiredly but with a slight smile. “I guess I was wrong. Your fiancée really is me.”
Yu Wei nodded like crazy. It felt like the sky had cleared and the world was full of love again.
She didn’t notice how pale Ji Fuyi looked—only that she had narrowly escaped heartbreak. She had been burning with jealousy toward Ji Fuyi’s fiancée—only to find it was herself.
She recalled being so mad back in A City, wanting to beat up Ji Fuyi’s mysterious fiancée… and now realized she had been mad at herself the whole time.
And she had insisted again and again to her parents that she absolutely didn’t want a fiancée.
Now what?
She remembered their first dinner together—when she’d joked that if only they had met through a blind date. And now… they really were on one.
Ji Fuyi watched the myriad emotions play across Yu Wei’s face—from shock to disbelief, and then to a silly smile—and shook her head.
Before Yu Wei could speak, Ji Fuyi said:
“I agree with what you said. This marriage is purely our parents’ idea. It’s unfair to both of us.”
She had been sitting too long and was starting to feel fatigued.
Ever since finding out she was pregnant, she had mentally prepared herself for the headaches and discomfort—but it was still hard to bear.
“You’re right. Our lives shouldn’t be full of regrets.”
That once-inviting scent of mint, once intoxicating, now carried a chill—Yu Wei’s scent felt like ice, sinking into her bones.
Ji Fuyi swept away her messy thoughts and said softly:
“You and I should both live our own lives. So, since you already like someone…”
She smiled gently and said:
“Let’s call off the engagement.”
Yu Wei was stunned.
Ji Fuyi, propping her chin on her hand, smiled and said:
“Neither of us wants this, right?”
