I Woke Up And Found Myself Married - Chapter 22
“Why?”
After hearing what the doctor said, Yu Wei became even more anxious.
Not wanting the baby and not being able to keep the baby were two completely different things. If it was the latter, she didn’t know how much more suffering Ji Fuyi would have to endure.
She recalled Ji Fuyi’s pale complexion lately and couldn’t help but feel distressed.
The doctor heard the urgency in her voice, then glanced at Ji Fuyi sitting silently on the sofa with her eyes downcast. Feeling a bit puzzled but respecting patient privacy, she didn’t ask further.
“The condition of the child is usually closely related to the mother’s physical health, as well as the state of her pheromones.”
Seeing Yu Wei’s confused expression, the doctor patiently explained:
“Ms. Ji’s health has never been great. Her past physical examination reports barely met the baseline. After becoming pregnant, her values have fluctuated a lot. Pregnancy is having a significant impact on her body.”
She said it tactfully, but Yu Wei already understood the implication.
Ji Fuyi wasn’t suited for pregnancy — it was bad for her health.
Yu Wei’s heart sank. Although she saw the child as a surprise and truly wanted to have it, the thought of it harming Ji Fuyi’s health made her feel that maybe it was better not to keep it.
Ji Fuyi nodded and said softly, “I never thought I’d get pregnant.”
“Given Ms. Ji’s condition, we don’t recommend continuing with the pregnancy,” the doctor said, pushing the written medical report toward Yu Wei. “It’s too dangerous.”
“You previously said you didn’t want to keep the baby. Is that still how you feel?” the doctor asked, looking at them. “However, your current state is unstable. A procedure can’t be done right now. We recommend stabilizing first — wait a month or two.”
“Hmm, I’ve taken oral suppressants before.”
“I see. Oral suppressants have a big effect on pheromone levels,” the doctor said while writing on the file. “And ever since your second gender differentiation, you’ve been using regular injections and spray suppressants to control heat cycles. Your pheromone levels are already very low.”
Every word from the doctor hit Yu Wei hard. She immediately grasped the most crucial part and asked:
“Three years?”
“You didn’t know? Ms. Ji only experienced her differentiation at twenty-five. Her Omega hormone levels are very low — and on top of that, she’s been using suppressants. Logically, it’s extremely difficult for her to get pregnant.”
No wonder no one could smell her scent. Ji Fuyi really was different from other Omegas.
Yu Wei could feel Ji Fuyi’s gaze land on her, with a trace of cautious searching.
Yu Wei turned and gave her a reassuring smile. She seemed to see Ji Fuyi’s tense posture relax slightly.
Was she worried about something?
Yu Wei pushed down her curiosity, took the care instructions list from the doctor, thanked her, and left the room with Ji Fuyi.
As they walked, Yu Wei softly read from the list:
“No iced water, no spicy foods, no suppressants, keep moderate activity…”
“…Stay with your partner, it helps stabilize pheromones.”
Yu Wei held the small paper, feeling a bit lost, and asked:
“So I need to stay with you more?”
“Yes,” Ji Fuyi replied without looking at her. “That’s what the list says.”
Yu Wei grew nervous — would Ji Fuyi even want to spend more time with her?
“Then… how about we just live together?” she asked tentatively.
Ji Fuyi clearly froze. Ever since she agreed to marry Yu Wei, a strange tension had lingered between them.
Temporary marking, attraction, affection, a contract marriage — all tangled together made their relationship hard to define.
At a time like this, Yu Wei suggesting they live together, even if for health reasons, would only complicate things.
“It seems a bit inappropriate,” Ji Fuyi hesitated. “From any angle, we’re not quite at that stage to live together.”
“I know,” Yu Wei nodded. “Just thought it’d help your health.”
“Thank you.”
It was the first time Ji Fuyi had said those words to her, and it made Yu Wei feel strange — not exactly distant, but not quite close either. Somewhere between acquaintances and… something softer.
“Living together before getting engaged, my parents wouldn’t approve.”
Her father’s face flashed in Ji Fuyi’s mind, sending a chill down her spine.
“I’m afraid it’ll cause complications.”
“That makes sense,” Yu Wei suddenly realized. “If they find out, I’ll definitely get scolded. Never mind then — I can just come visit you often.”
Ji Fuyi looked at her and smiled faintly, feeling more and more curious.
There was a small gap between them, just a couple of steps. Unlike before, there was no flirtation, just ordinary conversation — but in that distance, something more than friendship hovered between them.
A little nervousness, a little cautious testing…
And a hint of sweetness.
This subtle yet mutually understood thing was, somehow, more intoxicating than a burst of pheromones.
Ji Fuyi pressed her lips together and couldn’t help but smile.
“Alright. Come visit the set next time.”
“The set!” Yu Wei’s eyes lit up instantly. “I’ve been dying to go!”
“I’ll send you an invitation then — that way you can enter the studio.”
“Great! I’ll be waiting,” Yu Wei beamed, eyes shining. “When do you start shooting?”
“Still picking a script. After that, there’s more prep work — it’ll take some time,” Ji Fuyi thought about her schedule. “If you’re eager, I can take you to a friend’s set first.”
“No need! I don’t care about watching someone else film,” Yu Wei shook her head. “Don’t wear yourself out. I hope you’re healthy by then.”
Ji Fuyi smiled. “I should be.”
The sunlight outside was perfect, and Yu Wei suggested they take a walk. As they strolled through the hospital garden, Yu Wei kept glancing at Ji Fuyi, thinking about her reaction earlier when they mentioned the differentiation period. She wanted to ask but was hesitant.
She could sense Ji Fuyi didn’t want to talk about it. A few times when she’d accidentally overwhelmed her with pheromones, Ji Fuyi had gotten angry almost instantly.
Yu Wei kept stealing glances, but said nothing. After several minutes, Ji Fuyi finally grew irritated and asked:
“If you have something to ask, just ask.”
“…Ah,” Yu Wei stopped walking, tugging her toward a bench. “You noticed?”
“It was obvious.”
“Then I’ll ask, okay?” Yu Wei confirmed cautiously.
“Go ahead,” Ji Fuyi rubbed her temples. “You’d find out eventually anyway.”
After their last separation, Ji Fuyi had thought through some things. Even if this was just a contractual marriage, could she really keep everything hidden from Yu Wei?
All the tangled, messy history beneath the surface — if Yu Wei married her, she’d inevitably get dragged into it. Since that was the case, better to let her know early, while she still had the chance to walk away.
To Ji Fuyi, Yu Wei’s affection was precious and didn’t deserve to be tainted by all this.
Besides, that tiny seed of yearning that had just begun to bloom — Ji Fuyi couldn’t help but feel reluctant to crush it.
“Then I’ll ask,” Yu Wei looked at her, inching closer and placing her hand next to hers. “You weren’t happy earlier when they mentioned your differentiation?”
“No,” Ji Fuyi shook her head. “I just don’t like talking about it.”
“My mother had complications during her pregnancy. She was forcefully marked. After conceiving me…”
Ji Fuyi took a deep breath and said slowly:
“She was marked again several times. Later, they divorced. The trauma affected her deeply. Her pheromones malfunctioned, and it was passed down to me. Differentiation is influenced by pheromones.”
Yu Wei was silent. She had assumed it was a natural delay — she hadn’t expected something so painful.
Ji Fuyi merely shrugged. Her face was expressionless, as though she had long grown used to it — just stating facts.
“When I didn’t differentiate at eighteen, I thought I was going to be a Beta. Everyone had always said I’d be an Alpha — said I had all the typical Alpha traits.”
She sighed. “Honestly, I didn’t want to be either. Alpha or Omega. But, things are what they are. I can’t change it now.”
Yu Wei could hear the unspoken truth — she didn’t want to resemble either of her parents. But life had defied her wishes.
Quietly, Yu Wei wrapped an arm around her shoulders, trying to comfort her. Ji Fuyi didn’t resist.
She so rarely showed weakness, and this small moment of vulnerability tugged hard at Yu Wei’s heart.
“My father threatened my mom — that’s why I went on the blind date with you.”
In Yu Wei’s arms, Ji Fuyi felt something strange, as if a part of her heart that had never been understood was now being soothed.
Her guard loosened. She wanted to tell Yu Wei more.
“I didn’t want to go. But my mom’s arms were covered in wounds. She can’t leave him, and all she does is beg me — beg me to compromise, to give in. She’s desperate and selfish,” Ji Fuyi lowered her head, her expression unreadable. “I tried, but I still couldn’t ignore her.”
She let out a breath. “When I saw the blind date was you, I actually felt relieved.”
Yu Wei didn’t think too hard about what that meant — she only felt wave after wave of aching tenderness crashing through her heart.
“I’m not suited for marriage. I never even considered it,” Ji Fuyi paused, as if remembering something. “I said a lot that day to scare you off. Why didn’t you give up?”
Yu Wei chuckled, revealing a row of soft white teeth. “Didn’t want to.”
Ji Fuyi placed her hand over Yu Wei’s resting hand, gazing into her eyes, and said:
“Even if it’s a contract marriage, there may still be a lot of trouble to face.”
“I don’t like you that much. Your love might not be reciprocated. I think… it’s not worth it for you to do all this for me.”
“It’s not a waste,” Yu Wei said brightly, eyes gleaming in the sunlight. “Things and people you love are rare. If you don’t chase them when they appear, what’s the point of life?”
“You’re really carefree, aren’t you,” Ji Fuyi murmured, feeling the warmth in her palm. “Don’t get too invested. I don’t want you to regret it.”
“If I regret it, that’ll still be my own choice,” Yu Wei said as she gently rubbed her fingers. “And maybe, you can give yourself a choice too.”
“I will,” Ji Fuyi smiled. “I’m not too hard on myself.”
“Good.”
Yu Wei softly squeezed her hand and said:
“Then I’ll wait for you to fall for me.”
