I Woke Up And Found Myself Married - Chapter 28
On the day when both families were to meet, Yu Wei arrived early at Ji Fuyi’s apartment.
She stood at the door, nervously scuffing the floor with the tip of her shoe, watching Ji Fuyi walk back and forth packing things. With her head lowered, she said anxiously, “I’m so nervous.”
“What are you nervous about?” Ji Fuyi chuckled, handing her bag to Yu Wei to hold. Now in her second month of pregnancy, she had gradually started to adjust. Sometimes, she even felt a strange sense of peace—as if there truly was a tiny life growing vigorously inside her, like the tender shoots outside the window, changing a little more each day.
“I’m just nervous. What if something goes wrong at this stage? No, no—bad luck to say that out loud, what a jinx!” Once Yu Wei got nervous, she couldn’t stop talking. “Did things go well before? I’m not even sure. But it should be fine, right?”
Neither of them had any experience with this. Not to mention how the wedding negotiations had gone—most of the preparations were being handled by assistants. Ji Fuyi was only now realizing how much needed to be done for a wedding. Whether it was a contractual marriage or not, it all came crashing down like a wave, leaving no room for anything else.
“It’s fine,” Ji Fuyi patted her shoulder as they stood together waiting for the elevator. “They won’t make things difficult for each other.”
She pursed her lips. Yu Wei couldn’t read her emotions but sensed Ji Fuyi seemed to have understood something she herself didn’t know yet.
Yu Wei drove all the way to the venue. This time, the two families had booked a fancier restaurant, located in the city’s well-known lakeside scenic area—on the top floor of a lakeside hotel. The spacious private room was surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, offering a clear view of the rippling spring lake.
After parking in the underground garage, Yu Wei remained seated in the car, not opening the door for a long time.
Soft music floated from the speakers, dispersing the silence in the car. After a few moments, when Ji Fuyi noticed she still hadn’t moved, she asked, “Aren’t we going?”
“W-Wait a minute…”
Yu Wei suddenly buried her face in the steering wheel, letting out a low groan: “I’m so nervous!”
Ji Fuyi laughed. “What exactly are you nervous about? Today’s just for them to talk. We’re just background extras. You’ve already met my parents. What’s there to be nervous about?”
“I don’t know.”
Yu Wei lifted her head, eyes full of helplessness as she looked at Ji Fuyi and whispered, “Jiejie, I’m really nervous.”
Ji Fuyi looked at her and the words she was about to say vanished.
In the dim light, Yu Wei couldn’t clearly see Ji Fuyi’s expression—just that she suddenly leaned in. A soft, sweet scent approached closer and closer, and then something lightly touched her cheek, and with that scent, brushed against her lips.
“No need to be nervous,” Ji Fuyi’s breath was warm and close. “I’m here.”
Yu Wei’s breath caught for a second. For a moment, she wanted to reach out, hold the back of Ji Fuyi’s head, and kiss her—turn that ambiguous touch into something real.
Eight-treasure porridge, eight-delicacy soup, five-red soup, four-red bl00d-tonic soup, basa fish fillet, candied apples, candied yam, six-mushroom soup, lingma catfish…
But she didn’t dare act impulsively. In that small space filled with sweetness, Yu Wei merely breathed softly and gently, afraid that even the sound of her breathing might disturb the moment. After what felt like a long time—or perhaps just a second—she finally whispered:
“You smell really good.”
Golden sunlight streamed in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. A gentle breeze lifted the white gauze curtain. Unlike Yu Wei’s imagined scene of confrontation, the meal went smoothly—polite and cordial, everyone enjoying themselves.
By the third round of toasts, Father Yu and Father Ji were already chatting business at the table, clearly treating each other like family. Ji Fuyi and Yu Wei exchanged glances, both letting out a long sigh of relief.
Under the table, Yu Wei quietly squeezed Ji Fuyi’s hand. Ji Fuyi noticed her mother glaring at her, but she merely smiled at her mother. Instead of pulling away, she intertwined her fingers with Yu Wei’s.
Yu Wei lit up with joy. Ji Fuyi gently stroked her fingers, signaling her to calm down.
After the tea break, the parents had finalized the wedding date and other details. Thanks to Yu Wei’s persistence, it was agreed that the wedding style would be decided by the two of them.
Once their parents left, Yu Wei dragged Ji Fuyi for a walk along the lake. After just a few steps, they sat down on a bench, watching the shimmering water.
“Thank goodness nothing went wrong…” Yu Wei sighed.
“What could’ve gone wrong?” Ji Fuyi’s tone was calm. Yu Wei turned to look at her.
“They can’t wait for us to get married.”
“Huh?” Yu Wei was a bit puzzled. She knew her father was eager for a business alliance, but didn’t fully grasp the bigger picture.
“There are several major city projects coming up later this year, and every company has their eyes on them.” Ji Fuyi stared at the waves rolling to the shore. “If we marry quickly, they’ll feel more confident treating each other as partners. Once both families combine their resources, the chances of securing deals are much higher.”
“I see.”
Yu Wei reached out to hold her hand, gazed at the lake for a while, and then said glumly, “Now that you’ve said it like that, I realize… this really is a business marriage.”
She looked a bit down. Ji Fuyi patted the back of her hand. “As long as you don’t feel that way, that’s what matters.”
Her words were subtle, and Yu Wei hadn’t yet grasped the deeper meaning before Ji Fuyi got up and walked a few steps down the stone path.
Yu Wei didn’t have time to think further. She quickly caught up and held onto her arm.
As her hand touched Ji Fuyi’s skin, Yu Wei felt a faint tremble. It was odd—on such a warm day, she should’ve felt flustered—but standing beside Ji Fuyi, she felt only peace.
In the clear blue sky, a bird flashed overhead.
After setting the wedding date, Ji Fuyi noticed that Yu Wei was unusually cheerful—completely swept out of the gloom from earlier.
“Fuyi, should we go ring shopping?” Yu Wei hugged a pillow as she curled up on Ji Fuyi’s sofa, eyes sparkling. “It’s better to pick early, or we won’t have time later!”
“So excited?” Ji Fuyi was reading a script, the folder spread across her lap as she flipped through the pages.
Yu Wei peeked at her. Ji Fuyi had just showered that morning—no makeup on her fair face, soft golden hair resting gently on her shoulders, outlining her delicate chin. Her lips were cherry blossom pink, making Yu Wei want to kiss them.
“I’m not that excited,” Yu Wei murmured as she slid her palm onto Ji Fuyi’s knee. “Just… a little bit excited. Thinking about marrying you…”
“Stop,” Ji Fuyi held up a hand, smiled sweetly, and said, “Once I finish this, we’ll go pick out rings.”
“Okay~”
Yu Wei obediently closed her mouth and didn’t say another word. But inside, she drew imaginary circles—what kind of line is that? She grumbled internally. Not romantic at all. Totally kills the vibe. She glanced at Ji Fuyi, who was focused on her script and hadn’t noticed her expression.
Her soft knee was cool against Yu Wei’s palm.
And just like that, Yu Wei stopped being upset. This wasn’t so bad either. Ji Fuyi quietly reading her script… time felt like it had frozen. Yu Wei’s heart settled. She pulled out her tablet and reviewed her exhibition plans. Occasionally, wedding planning messages popped up. She would sneak a peek at Ji Fuyi, worried she might notice.
Since they could choose the wedding style themselves, she wasn’t about to let it be dull or forgettable.
After all, even Ji Fuyi’s agent had called her. She didn’t want to let anyone down.
Especially Ji Fuyi. She wanted to see her surprised and delighted.
Ji Fuyi soon finished the script, closed the folder, and waited quietly. Yu Wei was still reading, deeply focused as always.
Ji Fuyi didn’t interrupt her.
She simply watched. She realized Yu Wei had such a serious gaze—fully absorbed, completely undistracted. For some reason, though Yu Wei said nothing, Ji Fuyi felt something quietly stir inside her.
Half an hour passed before Yu Wei finished a document and looked up—only to find Ji Fuyi watching her.
Her gaze was soft.
Softer than Yu Wei had ever seen.
Realizing this, Yu Wei’s face began to flush.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked while closing her tablet.
“Just looking,” Ji Fuyi said calmly, raising her brows. “Is that not allowed?”
Her voice was light, but the teasing tone was unmistakable. As expected, one second… two… three… Yu Wei’s face turned even redder.
“N-No, of course it’s allowed!” she stammered. “You wanna go ring shopping with me?”
“Yeah.”
Ji Fuyi put the folder aside, changed clothes, and stepped out. She looked down at Yu Wei and lifted her chin slightly.
“If I don’t go with you, who else would I go with?”
“N-no one! I only want to go with you!” Yu Wei said quickly, making Ji Fuyi chuckle.
On the drive to the jewelry store, Yu Wei was in great spirits—humming along with the radio and smiling to herself.
Ji Fuyi had been watching the scenery, but when she noticed Yu Wei acting like that, she couldn’t help but laugh. “So silly.”
Yu Wei shot back, “Not as silly as your cat.”
Ji Fuyi laughed harder. “Why are you comparing yourself to a cat?”
Yu Wei pouted. Because that’s your only pet. Who else am I supposed to compete with?
As soon as they walked into the store, a salesperson approached them with a bright smile.
“What kind of rings are you looking for today?”
Yu Wei asked curiously, “There are different kinds?”
“Of course! Engagement rings, wedding bands, even proposal rings are all different styles,” the saleswoman said smoothly. “We’re a world-renowned jewelry brand—many celebrities buy their rings here…”
As she spoke, her eyes fell on Ji Fuyi. The part of her face visible above the mask—those beautiful eyes—looked incredibly familiar.
The saleswoman’s smile faltered slightly. She glanced at the store’s promotional poster nearby. The woman in the poster had a pair of eyes that looked exactly like the ones in front of her.
“Alright, we get it—lots of celebrities shop here.”
In the VIP room, Ji Fuyi removed her mask and smiled. “Let’s see which ones suit us.”
