I Woke Up And Found Myself Married - Chapter 29
The shop assistant had seen those eyes many times before—in the massive posters at the subway station she passed on her way to work, where the most eye-catching feature was exactly those eyes; in the commercials that aired during her favorite TV dramas at home—those, too, were starring Ji Fuyi; and certainly, in the promotional booklets around the store, filled with her images.
But this was the first time she had seen those eyes up close like this. Ji Fuyi sat in front of her, fingers interlaced with the person beside her, smiling as she said, “We prefer to keep things simple. Do you have any rings you’d recommend?”
Just as she finished speaking, Yu Wei’s face betrayed disapproval. She immediately countered, “Why keep it simple? Marriage is a once-in-a-lifetime thing! I don’t want to keep it simple—I want the prettiest and sparkliest one. Budget isn’t an issue, so just show us the most extravagant ones…”
Under Ji Fuyi’s disapproving gaze, Yu Wei’s voice gradually quieted down, eventually turning into a muttered, “I’m just offering my opinion.”
The shop assistant, who had been a little nervous, couldn’t help but relax at their exchange. She let out a soft laugh and said, “I’ll go get some samples for you to look at.”
Once outside the VIP room, the assistant leaned against the wall and took several deep breaths.
What just happened?! She was helping Ji Fuyi pick a wedding ring!
Clutching her chest, the assistant felt her heart pounding uncontrollably. In an era full of new celebrities every three months, Ji Fuyi had remained a constant—dominating the biggest billboard downtown, starring in the most popular films each season, and setting trends with every move she made. Wherever she appeared, a legion of fans would be screaming, ready to marry her on the spot!
And now… Ji Fuyi was getting married?!
And not a single word had leaked out?
Who was the person beside her? The assistant had never seen her before. She was stunning—perhaps she, too, was in the entertainment industry? But if that were the case, wouldn’t there be at least a few photos floating around?
Standing in the hallway, the shop assistant felt like she had just uncovered a massive secret.
A colleague passed by and asked, “Hey, what’s wrong? You don’t look so good.”
She quickly shook her head and signaled that she was fine.
Her coworker gave her a skeptical look as she rushed off toward the storage room. If it weren’t for the strict professional policies against discussing client privacy, she would’ve happily spilled everything.
Meanwhile, Ji Fuyi and Yu Wei didn’t have to wait long. The assistant soon returned with a full box of sample rings.
The box was filled with rings ranging from plain bands with tiny diamonds to large solitaire cuts—every type imaginable. Even just opening the lid emitted a dazzling sparkle.
Yu Wei examined them carefully, her mind racing with critiques. This one’s too plain, that one too flashy, this one has a cool design but the diamond’s too small, that one has a big gem but looks clunky. No matter how she looked, none of them felt right—none seemed worthy of Ji Fuyi.
Before she could speak, Ji Fuyi had already scanned the box, picked one up, and said, “This one. I think it’s nice.”
Yu Wei glanced at the ring in her hand. The design was neither bold nor delicate, the diamond modest in size—a completely average, forgettable piece. It was hard to get excited about.
“Wow, great choice, Ms. Ji! That’s our featured design this season. The band’s shape is by a famous designer,” the assistant immediately launched into her sales pitch with a beaming smile. “The diamond may not be big, but its clarity is excellent. It’s very practical too—doesn’t get in the way of daily tasks. It’s perfect as either an engagement or wedding ring…”
The longer she spoke, the more Yu Wei tuned out. Were these really considered “features”? Designer shape? High clarity? Weren’t those basic expectations? And calling it a “featured design”—didn’t that just mean everyone else had it too? And “doesn’t get in the way of tasks”? Did she think Ji Fuyi was washing dishes at home?
Ji Fuyi, on the other hand, listened calmly, smiling and nodding as the assistant finished her spiel. “Alright, let’s go with this one.”
Yu Wei blinked in disbelief. That was it?
This was the one?
She was vaguely disappointed but didn’t know how to object, so she followed the assistant to the register. As they were paying, the assistant hesitated for a moment before asking, “Is this ring for your engagement?”
Oh—engagement and wedding rings were different. A light bulb went on in Yu Wei’s head. She looked down at the perfectly average ring and replied, “Yes, it’s for the engagement.”
“Great,” the assistant said cheerfully, placing the ring in a gift bag. “This one’s perfect for that. For the wedding ring, I’d recommend something more elaborate.”
She gave Yu Wei a knowing smile. Yu Wei quickly nodded. She had completely forgotten there was a difference between engagement and wedding rings. Now she could pick out a more dazzling wedding ring later—what a relief.
The assistant walked them to the door with a bright smile. Watching their backs as they left, she couldn’t help thinking that even though this was the store’s featured ring… it still felt like it wasn’t enough for someone like Ji Fuyi.
Wait a minute. Featured design?
The assistant furrowed her brows, remembering the confident way Ji Fuyi had picked that ring. She glanced over at the nearby advertisement—and sure enough, the one Ji Fuyi wore in the ad was exactly that ring.
She stared at the empty entrance, deep in thought.
Meanwhile, in the underground parking lot, Ji Fuyi and Yu Wei were waiting for the car to start. Yu Wei was texting and casually asked, “Do you really like that ring?”
“Not really,” Ji Fuyi replied calmly. “I wore it in a commercial before, so I’m familiar with it. Makes it easier for styling and such.”
“Oh,” Yu Wei murmured.
So that was her reasoning—practical, to the point, not even a trace of sentiment behind it. Yu Wei felt a little down. Still, she figured this gave her more room to surprise Ji Fuyi later.
Her phone vibrated with a message. It was a reply to the text she had sent earlier.
“You suddenly want a natural pink diamond ring, hand-crafted, in under a week? Weiwei, are you trying to kill me (:з」∠),” came the message from Zhan Mengmeng, who soon followed up with, “Don’t worry, Sotheby’s is having an auction this week. I’ll check it out for you.”
Yu Wei replied quickly: “No problem. Budget isn’t an issue.”
“What’s the occasion? Planning to propose?” came Zhan Mengmeng’s teasing follow-up.
“Something like that,” Yu Wei sighed. Pretty soon, the whole world would know anyway. “Thanks in advance.”
She looked up and found Ji Fuyi watching her. Ji Fuyi smiled faintly and asked, “All done?”
“Yeah, just sorting something out,” Yu Wei said, suddenly feeling a little guilty. “Where should we go next?”
Ji Fuyi thought for a moment and said, “Since we’re already out, we might as well go try on wedding dresses.”
The scenery flew by outside the car window. Watching the traffic on the road, Yu Wei found herself bothered by Ji Fuyi’s tone. Even though it was a simple phrase, the word “might as well” rubbed her the wrong way.
“Are we really just trying it on ‘since we’re out’?”
At a red light, Yu Wei stopped the car. Her question came out with an edge of frustration.
“You picked the ring because it was the featured design and ‘convenient.’ Even if this wedding is just for show, don’t you think that’s a little too careless?”
She watched the red light countdown and felt a wave of frustration surge through her.
“You even told me earlier not to think of this as just a business marriage…”
Ji Fuyi paused, clearly caught off guard by Yu Wei’s words. As the seconds ticked down, she reached out and gently held Yu Wei’s hand, her voice soft:
“It’s not that I don’t care. It’s just that saying things too seriously sometimes… feels scary.”
Her hand was warm and dry, like a spring in the middle of a desert—gradually soothing Yu Wei’s restless heart.
She had been on edge all day. To her, rings and wedding dresses were supposed to be thoughtful, meaningful. Not something to pick up after a script reading. Not something to do just because it was convenient.
But Ji Fuyi had acted so casually, and Yu Wei hadn’t dared say anything—hadn’t dared show her disappointment.
She stared out at the sky. She wanted to ask, Is this what love is? That just because she liked Ji Fuyi, even when Ji Fuyi upset her, she couldn’t do anything about it?
She thought so much, dug so deep, all the books she had read over the years floated back into her mind, hoping one might give her an answer—but none did.
Until now.
Because of one simple gesture from Ji Fuyi, the knots in her heart began to loosen. That empty space finally felt comforted.
Yu Wei let out a soft sigh and turned to look at Ji Fuyi’s face.
The afternoon sun fell on her, casting dramatic light and shadow. The golden glow gave her a breathtaking beauty. Her normally bold features now looked delicate, like a white marble sculpture—strong yet fragile.
“Don’t be afraid.”
As the red light turned green, a breeze blew in through the car window, lifting their hair. Ji Fuyi heard Yu Wei softly say:
“If what you’re afraid of is the moments when you feel happy, then you’ll always live in fear—because from now on, your life will only be filled with happiness.”
Bathed in the warm breeze, Yu Wei parked in front of the bridal boutique. Looking at the pink flowers and layers of tulle inside, she imagined how stunning they’d look on Ji Fuyi. Then, she took Ji Fuyi’s hand and pressed a kiss to her knuckles.
“Jiejie,” Yu Wei said softly, “you’re going to be so happy.”
“How happy?” Ji Fuyi asked, her eyes suddenly stinging. She leaned back in her seat and closed her eyes, her throat dry—but still, she asked:
“Because of you?”
As those words left her lips, a small, electric jolt ran from her fingertips through her entire body, leaving her too stunned to think.
Then she heard Yu Wei’s slow, clear voice:
“Because you have me.”
“I’ll make you happy.”
“So, now go choose the wedding dress you love most.”
