I Won't Clear Up the Misunderstanding. I Don't Mind Being the Villainess. - Chapter 35
Kevin and his brother, Alva, were completely obsessed with Lily.
Rain just couldn’t handle being constantly ignored by Kevin and his fiancée, Alva, so they started dressing as a man.
And what happened next? For some reason, Lily began paying attention to Rain, even getting physically close.
That, in turn, made Kevin furious with jealousy, and Rain started getting a thrill out of it.
That’s a rough summary, but honestly, the whole situation is messed up. I can’t find a single decent thing about it.
The Mystery of Rain’s Motive
Still, the dynamic between those four—the one Rain told me about—sparked an idea. It must be why Rain was such a notorious sexual harasser toward Erica in the original novel.
(Even back then, Kevin would glare at Rain with pure hostility whenever Rain harassed Erica.)
Since this is Kevin we’re talking about, I know his anger wasn’t about the immorality of same-s3x harassment.
He must have been glaring at Rain purely out of possessiveness and jealousy for Erica, just like he did when Lily was around.
In short, Rain deliberately got close to Erica just to provoke the fiercely possessive Kevin. The Kevin from the original story was the kind of man who’d fight his own sons over Erica. He’d probably be jealous even knowing Rain was a woman.
That must be why Rain is keeping a relatively normal distance from me now—because I’m not the object of Kevin’s intense affection.
I can’t test that theory, though.
It would mean getting Kevin romantically interested in me, making him possessive. I don’t feel like I could meet that condition, and I definitely don’t want to.
I never thought that trying to stop Rain from going dark would also stop the sexual harassment.
Rain’s medical skills will be helpful while I’m stuck here at the Avenius Ducal House, and if we can genuinely get along, that’s a huge bonus. I just hope we can maintain a good relationship until the divorce is finalized and I can start my new life.
Though, being friends with me won’t make Kevin jealous, so it won’t satisfy Rain’s unique tastes.
(And there’s no way I’m treating Rain like a surrogate boyfriend, the way Lily did…)
A Tale of Two Pregnancies
As I dwell on this, my thoughts trip up.
Both Lily and the original Erica got close to Rain and made Kevin jealous. So far, so consistent.
But Lily married Kevin and had two children.
Yet, in the original story, Rain tried to force contraceptives on Erica and failed. That means Rain absolutely did not want Erica to get pregnant.
Why the completely different approach to the two women Kevin loved? I decided to ask the question aloud.
“…Doctor Rain, would you mind if I ask you a strange question?”
“Huh? That sounds a little scary, but go ahead.”
“What did you think when the former Duchess became pregnant?”
Rain’s eyes widened, and then they just looked bewildered.
It might be an act, but I couldn’t find any trace of hatred or jealousy. This is the same person who was so dead set against the original Erica having Kevin’s baby!
“As a doctor, I couldn’t recommend it, given the state of her health. Lily was fragile from childhood, truly lacking in stamina, and often needed a wheelchair even for simple walks.”
“A wheelchair…”
I had no idea Lily was so frail. It’s pretty incredible, in a way, that she managed to give birth to two children. Though, she did eventually pass away.
“But… if she was insistent on bearing the child of the man she loved, and determined to fulfil her duty as the Duchess, I couldn’t have stopped her.”
Rain offered a sad smile. “I was just an outsider when it came to her pregnancy and childbirth.”
“Okay, speaking of worst-case scenarios—and I mean absolute horror—if I somehow got pregnant with Lord Kevin’s child, how would you react?”
“You, with Kevin’s child…?”
I watched Rain’s face closely. There wasn’t much difference from when I asked about Lily. No jealousy, no hatred. My standing with Rain might be different from the original story, but Rain’s affection for Kevin should be the same.
“If it were an unwanted pregnancy, and it was early enough, there’s always the option of termination, but… I wouldn’t actively recommend it. Not for your health, or any other reason.”
“So, you mean I should give birth?”
“Yes. While there is adoption, it would be tricky since the two of you are officially married.”
“And what if Lord Kevin and I decide we need a child and choose to have one?”
“That is… something I have to leave entirely to your judgement. I’m not in a position to interfere with the Avenius Ducal House’s family planning.”
“Understood. I absolutely do not want to get pregnant with Lord Kevin’s child, so I will do my best to take precautions.”
I gave Rain that answer, but my mind was elsewhere.
“I see… Well, I’ll offer all the cooperation I can.”
They said this with a complicated smile.
The original Rain’s love-hate-laced madness really isn’t here in the current Rain.
Wait, no. The Rain in the original story suddenly went crazy halfway through.
They enjoyed making Kevin jealous by being affectionate with Erica, but then they suddenly started trying to destroy Kevin and Erica’s bond. I thought it was because they realized the two were actually in love after initially thinking their marriage was loveless, and they set out to ruin it.
However, if Rain was intimate with Erica from the beginning just to seek Kevin’s jealousy, then the whole situation changes.
(The rain in the comic suddenly spiraled… no, it’s possible someone made them spiral.)
A particular person’s face flashed into my mind.
