If the world had no daytime (GL) - Chapter 1
Have you ever thought that the moment you fall asleep, you’ve already left Earth?
It was a rainy morning.
The electronic alarm clock beeped for 29 seconds before the sleeping person finally opened their eyes.
Bai Tian stretched out her hand from under the covers and turned off the alarm. With her eyes open, she lay on the bed, staring at the bright yellow chandelier hanging from the ceiling, momentarily unable to distinguish where she was.
Of course, she wouldn’t fail to recognize that this was her home, her bedroom, and the ceiling she saw every morning when she woke up.
She was just still immersed in her dream, confusing it with reality.
She fished her phone out from under the pillow. The cool, smooth touch gave Bai Tian an inexplicable sense of relief.
Pressing the unlock button and looking at the date and time, she sat up, grabbed her nightgown from the chair beside her, and slowly got out of bed.
The pain in her upper thigh from the ligament strain a few days ago still lingered, making it awkward to walk.
“Everything is going wrong,” Bai Tian mumbled as she walked into the bathroom and picked up her toothbrush and toothpaste.
The minty flavor filled her mouth, and she squinted her eyes, somewhat enjoying the cool and refreshing stimulation of her taste buds.
While brushing her teeth, Bai Tian casually turned off the flight mode on her phone. Immediately, several voice messages popped up.
She frowned, swiped open the messages, and sure enough, there were several one-minute-long voice messages.
Bai Tian spat out the foam, rinsed her mouth, wiped her face, and then picked up her phone to turn on text-to-speech.
A few minutes later, Bai Tian called the head teacher.
“Hello? This is Bai Tian. I’m calling about the message this morning. About going to S City to grade the papers, I actually wrote a leave request the day before yesterday because I need to go out of town. Do you think…”
The person on the other end of the phone interrupted her. Bai Tian held the doorknob and patiently listened to the other party rambling on and on.
“Yes, yes, I understand, but…” Her words were interrupted again.
Bai Tian took a deep breath and twisted the doorknob hard.
The person on the other end was probably still on the road, and the noisy traffic drowned out the human voice, so she had to try hard to make out what the other person was saying, lest she miss something.
Ten minutes later, Bai Tian hung up the phone and ran her fingers through her hair in frustration.
“Everything is going wrong,” she muttered again, and then sighed, opened the refrigerator, and started making breakfast.
She simply fried an egg, heated half a cup of milk, and took a triangular onigiri that was about to expire from the refrigerator and put it in the microwave. Bai Tian carried the plate and cup into the living room, sat down at the small square table, and turned on the TV to watch the news.
The financial news was over, so she switched channels casually and heard the microwave beep. She quickly ran over and took out the onigiri.
The aroma of tuna wafted into her nose, and Bai Tian carefully tore open the packaging and slowly walked back to the living room.
“…Recently, the highly controversial film ‘Songstress’ has been reported to be pulled from theaters. The film’s director, He Xuan, confirmed the news at 4 am this morning on Weibo. And announced that he would indefinitely terminate his cooperation with the film’s lead actress. The industry is speculating that the film’s withdrawal is related to the actress…”
Bai Tian poked the egg yolk and watched the golden-yellow semi-cooked egg liquid flow out, suddenly losing her appetite.
The TV is just a machine, and it won’t change automatically due to someone’s emotions, so the voice on TV continued.
“…After multiple interviews by our reporters, we finally contacted a staff member from the film set. The staff member revealed to our reporters that the actress was dissatisfied with the script’s plot design, and 60% of the filming work was completed by a body double. Moreover, she was absent from work without permission twice, which caused the filming to be unable to continue, resulting in a huge loss. An insider also contacted our reporter, claiming to have witnessed the actress arguing with a newcomer in the backstage and assaulting the other party…”
Bai Tian snatched the remote and turned off the TV.
The fried egg had gone cold. She shoved it into her mouth in a few bites, mechanically chewing and swallowing it before gulping down the milk. She got up, cleaned up the dishes, and went into the kitchen.
The faucet was running. Bai Tian picked up the plate and washed it for a long time before realizing she had forgotten to squeeze any dish soap. She pressed on the white bottle next to it, squeezed for a long time but nothing came out. She picked it up and shook it, and it was already empty. But she shook the bottle expressionlessly, harder and harder each time, until she finally unscrewed the cap and managed to pour out a bit of the remaining dish soap.
Silently washing the dishes and drying them before putting them back in the cupboard, Bai Tian shook her hands, stepped back, and leaned against the countertop.
The phone in the pocket of her pajama pants vibrated, but she stood there as if she hadn’t heard it.
A minute later, the phone vibrated again, this time with an incoming call alert.
Bai Tian pressed her cold hands against her face, refreshed herself, and then took out her phone to answer the call.
“A Yuan, have you left?” Her tone was relaxed.
The other party didn’t notice anything unusual and replied in a cheerful voice, “Should I come pick you up?”
Bai Tian looked up, rubbed her temples, and then replied apologetically, “Sorry, I got a sudden notice this morning. I’ve been assigned to grade papers in S City, and I’ll be leaving this afternoon. Although I’ve already asked for leave, the director said there’s a shortage of manpower and there’s really no way…”
The person on the other end paused for a moment, then comforted her, “It’s okay, there will be plenty of opportunities. I’ll just change my flight ticket. Don’t be unhappy, it’s no big deal.”
Bai Tian forced a smile, her tone filled with guilt, “Sorry to trouble you. I’m really sorry to cancel our first meeting.”
“It’s okay, it’s okay. My mom has been busy learning to dance these past few days, and she’s going on a trip to Thailand with the sunset group in a few days. She’ll have plenty of fun, you not coming is just right for her to have more fun.”
Listening to his steady voice, some of the restlessness in Bai Tian’s heart dissipated.
She nodded, listening to the phone while walking back to her room to start packing.
“Oh, right, are you going to S City?” the person on the other end suddenly asked.
“Yeah, why?”
Ye Li laughed. He held the steering wheel with one hand, turned up the volume of the Bluetooth headset, then clicked on the phone on the stand and glanced at it, saying, “It’s a coincidence, my sister said she’s been in S City these past few days, taking a vacation for herself.”
Bai Tian was stunned and asked blankly, “You have an older sister? I don’t think you’ve mentioned her before.”
Ye Li was also stunned. He thought for a moment before laughing, “I guess I forgot to tell you.”
“Actually, she’s not my biological sister, she’s my stepfather’s daughter.” Ye Li held the steering wheel with both hands, looked at the road ahead, and said slowly, “After my stepfather passed away a few years ago, she rarely came home. I don’t usually contact her, and since she’s very busy with work, we meet even less often.”
Bai Tian looked at the suitcase she had packed the night before, patted the dust off her pajama pants, then sat on the bed and listened attentively.
“This time is also rare that I received a message from her, saying that she was on vacation and resting in S City. I originally wanted to tell her to come home this time so you two could meet.”
“It sounds like your relationship is pretty good,” she couldn’t help but exclaim.
Ye Li was an open and simple person. After spending a lot of time with him, Bai Tian could easily hear something from his tone.
But the person on the other end said, “Actually, we had a very bad relationship before, but that’s all in the past. Now all I know is that she’s my sister, the only relative I have in this world besides my mom.”
His tone was unusually serious, and Bai Tian felt that there were many stories hidden in these words, but they were things she didn’t know and shouldn’t pry into. So she sat on the bed, swung her legs, and asked, “So, are you going to S City too?”
“As expected of you, you can always guess what I’m thinking. There’s a saying that goes, ‘It’s better to be lucky than good.’ I’ll tell her, and we’ll meet in S City this time. I’ll find another time to see my mom, so it’ll be easier for you.”
Bai Tian had no objections, and she also felt that meeting the “sister” would be much less stressful than meeting the “mother”.
“Then change the flight ticket and go to S City.”
It was settled.
S City was a good place, and it was also a big city that countless young people aspired to.
But for Bai Tian, if possible, she planned to never set foot in this city again.
However, life is full of unexpected twists and turns.
When Bai Tian boarded the plane to S City with a group of colleagues, she never thought that this sudden return to the old place would bring anything to her life that had finally gotten back on track.
She simply sat in her seat, sighed to herself about how “everything was going wrong,” and then adjusted her mindset once again to calmly watch the thick clouds outside the plane window, waiting to reach her destination.
Her colleagues were chatting happily about something interesting, but Bai Tian was lost in thought and didn’t hear clearly.
Her thoughts jumped rapidly, and after a few rounds, they stopped at the upcoming meeting.
What kind of person would Ye Li’s sister be? Bai Tian couldn’t help but wonder.
Since they weren’t related by blood, the two of them probably wouldn’t be similar. Bai Tian propped her head up and suddenly felt a little uneasy.
Would she be easy to get along with? Would she dislike the gift she bought? Or, would she dislike her as a person? What if such a terrible situation really happened, how would she handle it?
Thinking about it, Bai Tian felt a little sleepy and unknowingly fell asleep in her seat.
“There’s a sunflower blooming very well, it’s swaying gently in the wind, and it reminds me of you.”
The girl standing in the pool turned her head slightly, her back to the light. She seemed to smile, but it was impossible to see clearly against the backlight.
“But I quickly realized that thinking of you has nothing to do with the sunflower.”
The blue water in the pool rippled layer by layer due to the girl’s slow forward movement, and each ripple accompanied by the sound of splashing water echoed in the empty world.
“Instead, it’s because I’m addicted to you.”
The girl paused a short distance away, bent down to scoop up some water from the pool, and poured it over the halo of light created by the sunlight. As the water cascaded down from her slender fingers, she suddenly looked up and met her own gaze.
“Bai Tian.”
“Bai Tian, wake up.”
Bai Tian opened her eyes, her focus slowly returning. She was stunned for a few seconds before fully waking up. She nodded, picked up her belongings, and sat up straight.
A sweet announcement sounded in the cabin. People around her began to pack their things in groups of three or five. Those who had been asleep also woke up, taking a deep breath of relief or excitement upon reaching their destination.
Amidst the noisy crowd, Bai Tian remained silent and out of place.
“I’m back,” she said silently, lowering her eyes to hide her emotions.
The place where my beautiful dreams and nightmares began.
