I'll Raise Pigs to Support You - Chapter 14
Song Yugui hadn’t expected her little wife to be preoccupied with this matter. She opened her eyes, which had been shut for a long time without sleep, tightened her arm around her, and gazed at her with surprise before quickly breaking into a smile.
“You think Song Xingchuan isn’t a good person?”
Shen Xizhi felt a bit uncomfortable with the tight embrace around her waist and instinctively squirmed, nestling closer into her arms.
Smooth and tender, she rubbed against her clothes without restraint. Seeing that her expression was no longer cold, her courage grew, and she cozied up bit by bit into her embrace, leaving only her head tilted up to speak. “Mhm, he… he’s quite rude. He must not be a good person in private!”
Shen Xizhi spoke with conviction.
Song Yugui’s expression softened slightly.
After all, the male lead belonged to the female lead. Women who competed with the female lead for a man were all labeled as villainous antagonists. It was best for Shen Xizhi not to like the male lead. If she had to like a man… well, there were plenty of men in the world.
Why fixate on that one?
As Song Yugui thought this, she gradually tightened her arms around the person in her embrace and said gently, “Mhm, since you think he’s not a good person, interact with him less in the future. Don’t pay him any attention.”
Shen Xizhi froze, her body no longer relaxed. Her little face instantly paled. What does she mean? Does she suspect I’m involved with another man again?
How could she always think like this? I stay at home all day—who could I possibly be involved with?
The young girl, unjustly accused of impropriety, felt terribly wronged. Without realizing it, her eyes reddened. In the pitch-black night, she glared at her, then buried herself silently into Song Yugui’s arms, not daring to scold her but only hugging her tightly.
How could she be like this? Always suspecting I’d go after other men… I’m not some promiscuous woman who can’t live without men!
The person in her arms was in low spirits, but Song Yugui didn’t notice. Instead, having gotten the answer she wanted, her mood improved. Patting her back lightly as if soothing a child, she said, “Sleep. I’ll wake up early tomorrow to cut some pig grass before heading to town.”
Yesterday, she had been too busy looking for work and forgot about the delicate state of the villainess. She hadn’t given the pigs any extra feed. If she kept raising them like this, they’d lose two pounds a day.
Shen Xizhi pouted, thinking, She won’t even let me work…
Does she really dislike me that much?
In the past, she would have been overjoyed to have less work, but today…
She couldn’t pinpoint why she felt so uncomfortable.
The night was chilly, and her legs grew cold the moment they strayed even slightly from the other person’s warmth. Reluctantly, she inched closer, pressing her legs tightly against hers.
One pair of legs was long, straight, and bare—smooth and soft. The other pair was clad in thin sleeping pants. As the bare legs drew near, they parted slightly, enveloping the cold limbs to warm them.
Now, her entire body was nestled in her arms.
Song Yugui had no awareness of this. She simply reached an arm around her back, checked for any gaps where cold air might seep in, and then held her securely as she fell asleep.
Shen Xizhi, however, was acutely aware that she was in her arms, tightly embraced. There was no pain or torment—just the quiet sound of the wind in her ears, her chin resting against her head, breathing evenly.
This was something that would have been utterly impossible in the past.
The familiar stench of alcohol was gone, replaced by a faint, clean scent—indescribable, but simply the smell of being freshly washed.
The young girl pursed her lips, still feeling unhappy. Who could be happy after being misunderstood by their wife as having an affair with someone else?
She lay there with wide eyes, secretly cursing her for a long time before finally venting enough of her resentment to feel drowsy. Slowly, she closed her eyes and fell asleep in her arms.
The next day, Song Yugui indeed woke up very early. The sky wasn’t fully bright yet, shrouded in a hazy white mist. It wasn’t hard to keep her eyes open. She propped herself up on the bed and sat up groggily, only to realize her arm felt unusually heavy. Looking down, she saw she had absentmindedly lifted the person in her arms along with herself. A small, discontented whimper came from her embrace.
Startled, she quickly wrapped an arm around her shoulders and carefully laid her back down on the bed.
Her gaze lingered on the fair, rosy skin before she pulled the thin quilt over her, tucking the edges snugly beneath her to cocoon her completely.
Mhm, the little girl doesn’t have to work. No need to wake up so early—she can sleep a bit longer.
There wasn’t much entertainment in ancient times—no phones or computers. The few ways to pass time were limited. After meals, she usually just took a short stroll before going to bed, so waking up early wasn’t a problem.
Grabbing a basket and sickle, she energetically headed out to cut pig grass.
A few village men walking the same path, unlike the women who feared her, joked with her, “Why are you up so early today? Usually, we don’t see you until noon.”
Song Yugui chuckled softly and didn’t hide the truth. “I found work in town. I need to cut pig grass and feed the pigs before heading there.”
The men were surprised. “You’ve found work? That’s good. You’re not young anymore—it’s time to plan for the future.”
They didn’t seem to dislike her, as if they had a decent relationship with the original host.
After a moment’s hesitation, Song Yugui nodded and added,
“I’ve done a lot of terrible things in the past.”
At this, the middle-aged men’s expressions turned awkward, clearly recalling Song Yugui’s history of pestering women in the village.
What a shame—a perfectly good woman, but a sapphist? And even worse, she harassed women like a ruffian. Families with daughters all hold grudges against her. Thank goodness none of us have daughters.
The thought put them at ease.
The leading man felt it wasn’t a big deal. Scholars often said, To err is human. As long as she corrected her mistakes, that was what mattered.
So he waved it off. “If you say it’s in the past, then let it stay there. As long as you live properly from now on, even if you’re a sapphist, your parents can rest in peace. We’re all descendants of the same ancestors in Song Village—we wouldn’t truly hold it against you.”
A woman’s harassment might be unpleasant, but it was nothing compared to the outrage caused by a man.
Unaware that these men had no daughters and thus could forgive her easily, Song Yugui thought they were quite kind and smiled humbly. “Thank you, uncles. I’ll never do such absurd things again.”
The original host was a scoundrel, but she wasn’t.
The air grew quiet after her words. Thinking they didn’t believe her promise, Song Yugui silently cursed the original host again. Just as she finished, the leading man hesitantly spoke up.
“Xiao Gui… by seniority, you should call me ‘cousin.’”
The others quickly nodded in agreement. “Yeah, yeah! Have you lost your mind? What ‘uncles’? We’re all your cousins!”
