I'll Wait for You in the Future - Chapter 14: We Will Meet Again
I will wait for you in the future,
embracing you at every crossroads.
“What’s destined to happen will happen, but we can choose a different attitude. The outcome’s reflection in our hearts might be different.”
Weixiao’s family encountered trouble.
“Director Xie is missing,” Zhang, the secretary, suddenly burst into Wang Daqian’s office, panicked.
“What do you mean?”
“Director Xie’s phone is off, and his wife and son haven’t returned from their trip abroad months ago. We’ve already reported it; Director Xie might have absconded with the funds!”
“Impossible! Director Xie ran away?” Wang Daqian was stunned. Just last night, he’d been drinking with Director Xie, discussing future plans.
Chen Zhijun also called, saying before Wang Daqian could speak, “Old Wang, you must have heard. Director Xie ran away, transferring over 60 million yuan to overseas accounts. His family emigrated to America long ago; we’ve contacted his other relatives, but they claim ignorance. It seems Director Xie had been planning this. We need you to come to the bureau to cooperate with the investigation; I’ll send a car.”
Wang Daqian quickly said, “Okay, okay, I’ll cooperate. No need to send a car; I’ll go now.”
If Director Xie really ran away, the over 10 million yuan Wang Daqian had borrowed and advanced would be completely lost. If the government funds were defrauded, either they’d have to recover the funds, or the government would only release further funds after the investigation concluded. During this period, the entire project would be paralyzed. The houses that needed demolition were demolished, those who needed to move had moved; everyone was waiting for the new houses to be completed. If they couldn’t catch Director Xie, Wang Daqian’s life might be over. Wang Daqian told his secretary not to leak any news, to keep the construction site running, not to affect everyone’s morale, and rushed to the Public Security Bureau. The Exit and Entry Administration confirmed that Director Xie had flown to Australia; the evidence was irrefutable. Wang Daqian couldn’t imagine the anxious residents, nor his family’s future situation. This time, he not only lost all his family’s funds but also borrowed several million yuan from trusted friends.
Outside the Public Security Bureau, Zhang, the secretary, greeted him. Wang Daqian knew the news couldn’t be kept secret.
“Does Weixiao know?”
“Not yet, but many people have already gone to the construction site office.”
“I’ll go home first. The construction site absolutely cannot stop; tell everyone it’s proceeding as normal. If anyone asks about Director Xie’s escape, just say the government is handling it; trust the government.”
“Okay.”
The relocation housing area was in chaos.
Hao Tiemei rushed home from work, encountering several groups of people heading to the construction site before even entering the relocation housing area.
“Mom, what’s going on?” Liu Dazhi, just finishing school, didn’t know what had happened.
Hao Tiemei didn’t know the severity of the situation and told Liu Dazhi to stay home.
“Director Xie ran away; we absolutely can’t let Wang Daqian run away too; otherwise, our lives are over!” someone shouted.
“I said from the start not to believe in these relocation houses; look, now something’s happened!” A couple started arguing in the crowd, their voices mixing with the general commotion.
Liu Dazhi asked an older man about the situation, then immediately ran towards Weixiao’s house.
When Wang Daqian arrived home, many people had already gathered at the gate. Seeing Wang Daqian, everyone fell silent, unsure whether to express anger or demand answers.
“Boss Wang, I heard Director Xie absconded with the funds; is the relocation project in trouble?”
Wang Daqian raised his hands, signaling for silence, “To be honest, I just found out. Please rest assured; this is a large project; it won’t stop just because one person left. Trust the government, and trust me, Wang Daqian. Think about it; before the government funds arrived, I already started the project. Even if I lose everything, I’ll ensure this project continues. Please go home; tell everyone the project won’t stop. Rest assured; I’ll give you a satisfactory answer.”
The crowd gradually dispersed. Wang Daqian opened the gate and entered the courtyard. He took out his house deed, bank book, and car title, checking how much money he could gather, at least to buy some time. He absolutely couldn’t let the construction site stop; if it stopped, the situation would escalate.
Weixiao rushed in from outside, understanding the situation the moment she saw her father.
“Dad…” Weixiao’s voice was choked with emotion.
“I’m here, I’m here. Don’t cry, silly child. Come here.” Wang Daqian hugged Weixiao, patting her back, “Don’t worry; it’ll be alright; it’s not a big deal; your dad can definitely solve it, but it might be hard for a while.”
“Dad, I can handle it. You don’t need to worry about me; I’m all grown up.”
“Weixiao, are you home?” Liu Dazhi’s voice came from the gate.
Wang Daqian opened the door. Liu Dazhi looked anxious, “I… I came to see Weixiao.”
“You two chat. I’m fine; don’t worry.”
Liu Dazhi went inside. Weixiao was lost in thought; seeing him, she stood up.
“I came to see you.”
“Mm.”
The two were silent for a while. Weixiao broke the silence, “I’m sorry; we had to move out of the old house, and we might not be able to move into the new one for a while.”
“Hey, I didn’t come to ask about that. Didn’t Uncle Wang also want everyone to live better? Besides, Uncle Wang is also a victim; we just moved into smaller new houses; your family advanced a lot of money, right?”
“Thank you, Auntie and you.”
“You’re welcome.” Liu Dazhi’s face flushed red. Remembering Hao Huigui’s words, he had to ensure Weixiao didn’t regret liking him, but he didn’t know how to help.
“How much money is still needed?”
“About 50 to 60 million yuan. If the construction stops, there’s no hope; if it continues, we need at least 10 million yuan.”
10 million yuan? Liu Dazhi swallowed hard. In his mind, any amount over six figures—100,000, 1 million, 10 million, 100 million—was all the same. He’d never earn that much in his lifetime.
“What are you planning to do next?”
“We might become neighbors sooner than expected; we’ll also have to move into the relocation housing.”
“Mm, if you need anything, just let us know.” Since Hao Huigui had told Liu Dazhi that Weixiao liked him, he felt a heavier responsibility.
“The past can’t be changed;
the future is more alluring.”
In the meeting room, Hao Huigui and Zhou Xiaogong sat face-to-face; Zhou Xiaogong seemed calm.
“Xiaogong, I believe everything you said, and I believe your predictions are true.” Hao Huigui got straight to the point.
“Why do you believe me?” Zhou Xiaogong smiled.
Hao Huigui decided to reveal everything.
“I also met someone like that; everything he told me happened, but nothing could be changed; I was incredibly disheartened. But now I understand; all predictions are actually observations.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, what we call predictions aren’t actually predictions. Most events have precursors; it just depends on whether you can observe them. A predictor, more accurately, should be called an observer. Carefully observing life’s undercurrents, you’ll naturally know the direction and flow of the tide.”
“So, Teacher Hao, you mean the outcomes I couldn’t change weren’t fate but the result of everyone’s personality?”
“Yes, Xiaogong, you finally understand.”
Suddenly, Zhou Xiaogong burst into laughter, “I won’t believe your absurd theory. A person’s destiny is predetermined; if Heaven wants you to have a good life, you will; if it wants you to suffer, you will. It can easily push you into despair or lift you to heaven. We’re all just puppets manipulated by fate.”
Hao Huigui wanted to continue explaining, but Zhou Xiaogong stood up, “I don’t want to talk anymore. Don’t think you understand me just because you say you do, trying to trick me into revealing future events. I won’t fall for it. You all want to use my predictions for your own gain!” Zhou Xiaogong fell back into his delusional state.
Visiting hours were over; Hao Huigui felt frustrated. Before leaving, Zhou Xiaogong looked at Hao Huigui with interest and smiled. Hao Huigui didn’t know if Zhou Xiaogong was truly foolish or just pretending. He finally said, “Even if you don’t believe me, it doesn’t matter how much you know about the future. You not only need to spend time on your known life but also take responsibility for your unknown life. Maybe you know a lot now, but you know don’t even more that you do; that’s where you should truly go.”
People live poorly, encountering setbacks, not because of a single wrong choice, but because their daily state determines their choices, and their personality determines their actions at crucial moments.
Hao Huigui expressed his thoughts, not only to Zhou Xiaogong but also to himself. He had to take responsibility for Liu Dazhi, and even more so, for his future self.
“Some things are said because of liking;
some are kept in the heart because of love.”
Weixiao went to school as usual, sensing the change in others’ attitudes. Principal Zhou sought her out several times, expressing both anxiety and complaints. Hao Huigui watched, unsure how to comfort her. Whenever classmates discussed this, Liu Dazhi signaled Dingdang to comfort Weixiao, while he silenced the others.
“Liu Dazhi, your family was also scammed, right? Are you her family member? Do you think she’s really poor? Do you think she’d like you if she were poor? Forget it; I heard Director Xie gave her family a lot of money before running away; they’re in cahoots; the poor are the victims.”
Liu Dazhi repeatedly wanted to fight them but was stopped by Chen Tong.
A few days later, after school, Weixiao said to Liu Dazhi, “Are you free after school? Help me move. My dad sold the courtyard house; we’re moving to the relocation housing.”
“No problem! I’ll call Chen Xiaowu.” Liu Dazhi readily agreed. Weixiao’s relocation housing was only about forty square meters; many things couldn’t be taken and were left for the new owner.
“Weixiao, what about the Andy Lau photo?” Wang Daqian asked.
“I’ll do it myself.” Weixiao quickly ran over, carefully peeling the photo from the wall. Wang Daqian felt relieved. Weixiao had started learning taekwondo at four, earning her black belt. On that day, she’d said, “In the dark, even if you can’t see, you must maintain your senses; only then will you know how to counter unseen attacks.” Weixiao still treated her cherished things with respect and passion; Wang Daqian watched proudly from behind. Hao Huigui was also thinking about how to talk to Wang Daqian. He was afraid of arousing suspicion if he said too much, but saying too little wouldn’t change anything.
Wang Daqian returned the over 1 million yuan he’d borrowed to three friends. The friends hadn’t expected Wang Daqian to return the money at this critical juncture. They were Wang Daqian’s comrades, starting businesses in their hometowns after their discharge. They discussed it and said, “Daqian, honestly, we lent you the money because we saw a chance to make money. Getting the money back is fine ethically, but you’ll never recover. Listen to us; keep the money; repay it when you’re truly rich. Build one house, then another; at least it’s hope. You, Wang Daqian, are a true man. We don’t need the money; those residents need hope.”
Hearing his comrades’ words, Wang Daqian’s already bloodshot eyes reddened.
“Okay, I’ll listen to you; I’ll continue the project. One day, I’ll repay you.” Wang Daqian didn’t have time to eat with his comrades and rushed back to Hunan.
Everyone feared the construction site stopping. Once people dispersed, it’s hard to gather them again.
Wang Daqian returned to Hunan and announced the project would continue. Hao Huigui couldn’t sit idly by and went to see Wang Daqian. He had to tell Wang Daqian that the money could only be repaid, not invested; otherwise, it would be a tragedy, with all the money lost. When Hao Huigui arrived at the construction site, Wang Daqian was encouraging the workers. Seeing Hao Huigui, he was surprised. Hao Huigui followed Wang Daqian to his office and closed the door.
“Uncle Wang, I’m not an outsider; I want to say something; I hope you’ll consider it.”
“Teacher Hao, what do you want to say?”
“Weixiao’s father, have you considered that even if you invest this money, it might not change the outcome? It would be wasted.”
Wang Daqian looked at Hao Huigui without speaking.
“If you don’t invest, you might face temporary misunderstanding from the neighbors, but eventually, they’ll understand you’re also a victim. But if you invest, you’ll only delay their anxiety; the project will still collapse. Then, both you and Weixiao will suffer, owing not just favors but debts.”
Wang Daqian was silent for a moment, then lit up a cigarette. After finishing the cigarette, Wang Daqian sighed, “I know this money is likely wasted, but do I have a choice? When everyone trusts you, you have no way out. While I still have the strength, I have to try. Everyone believes in me wholeheartedly; I can only give my all. I have a clear conscience. If I don’t try my best to salvage this, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life.”
It turned out Wang Daqian knew the outcome from the beginning.
“By the way, Huigui, since you’re here, I have something to discuss. Weixiao’s mother and I divorced a long time ago. Weixiao’s always been understanding, never mentioning her mother in front of me. But I know she wants to work abroad, to see her mother, but she’s afraid of hurting me. Now, things are difficult at home, and she’s under unnecessary pressure, so I contacted her mother, planning to send Weixiao to America to live with her. It’ll be a better life for her.”
This day had finally arrived.
“Weixiao’s father, this seems like a good decision. Have you talked to Weixiao?”
“Not yet. I wanted to get your opinion first; I plan to discuss it with her tonight. Thank you, Teacher Hao. I hope we can have a proper drink together soon.”
“Of course, we will. Everything will work out; don’t worry.” Hao Huigui said this, but his heart ached.
“Thank you, Huigui. I’m glad you were willing to talk to me about this.”
Returning home, it was already 2 AM. Wang Daqian quietly opened the door to their new home; unpacked items were piled at the entrance. Weixiao slept in the small bedroom, which only had space for a bed. Wang Daqian turned on an old desk lamp; the cramped, cluttered space was filled with a quiet, soft light. A photo was on the living room wall; Wang Daqian walked closer, seeing it wasn’t Andy Lau, but a photo of himself, with the words: “Dad, you’re more handsome than Andy Lau; I love you.”
Wang Daqian quietly slipped out, crouching in the hallway, covering his mouth to stifle his sobs, afraid of waking Weixiao.
The next morning, Wang Daqian told Weixiao about his decision. Weixiao showed no emotion, simply asking, “How long?”
“Three months, before the college entrance exams.”
“Okay, I understand. I’m going to school.”
Weixiao told her friends she was leaving. Dingdang cried all day.
“Stop crying! Are you sad she’s leaving, or envious she’s going to America?” Liu Dazhi was exasperated.
“Of course, I’m sad. My best friend’s going to America; it’s so far away; we might not see each other for years. Some people see each other daily, their relationship growing stronger. But we see each other less and less, drifting apart. Do you know what that feels like?” Dingdang continued crying.
Liu Dazhi forced himself to say, “America’s great; you’ll see a different world. Your English will be excellent; it’ll be useful. Later, I’ll go to America…”
“Forget it, you’ll never go to America,” Dingdang sobbed.
Weixiao couldn’t help but laugh, “You two are always arguing.”
Liu Dazhi also wanted to cry, but he couldn’t; he had to do something. Weixiao seemed surprised that Hao Huigui agreed she should go to America: “You also think my dad’s right about me studying abroad?”
“I think it’ll benefit you. If Liu Dazhi went to America, it wouldn’t make sense.” The two laughed.
“I never planned to go to America, and I’m not prepared.”
“But I believe you’ll adapt quickly.”
“Does my dad think I’m a burden now?”
“Of course not; you’re overthinking. When your dad talked to me, he mentioned your taekwondo, your personality… He thinks it’s good for you to go to an American university, to see the world, while you’re still young. You can always come back if you want. Maybe he’s worried he won’t be able to afford it later.”
Hao Huigui was thinking the same thing as Liu Dazhi.
“Weixiao, before you leave, is there anything you particularly want to do?”
Weixiao thought for a long time, then laughed.
“What? Did you think of something?”
“Yeah, I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. My dad promised me a long time ago, but he never did it. I’m afraid if I say it, Teacher Hao will laugh.”
“I won’t laugh; tell me.”
“We’re from a small southern city; I’ve only seen snow on TV. My dad promised to take me to see snow, but he never did. I really want to see snow before I leave. I heard it snows in America.”
“American snow isn’t interesting; interesting snow needs to be seen with interesting people.”
“Yeah, I saw people having snowball fights on TV; it looked fun.”
“Okay, after the next monthly exam, I’ll take you and the others to Songcheng to see the snow. It’s already snowed there several times.”
“Really? Don’t lie to me.”
“I promise.”
“Thank you, Teacher Hao!” Weixiao laughed happily.
“When I did everything for you, I thought you were controlling me,
but actually, I was controlling you.”
Wang Daqian invested all his remaining money into the project, running between the Public Security Bureau and the government, trying to find out what was happening with Xie Youliang and how the government would handle the situation. The deputy director in charge of the case told Wang Daqian not to come to the bureau every day, saying the government was reporting to higher-ups, trying to resolve the issue quickly. Wang Daqian knew “quickly” meant no deadline, but he had no choice but to sigh and leave. The deputy director suddenly stopped him: “Old Wang, I heard you’re still working hard. Try to slow down; the higher-ups will help you, but it takes time. Don’t stress so much.”
“It’s fine. It’s my project; I have to keep going until I can’t anymore. If I can’t, you guys will have to clean up the mess.”
“One thing.” The deputy director patted Wang Daqian’s shoulder.
The entire incident cast a shadow over the hundred or so families in the relocation housing area and Weixiao’s family. Before, the relocation housing area was lively, with people chatting and visiting. Now, people interacted less, especially the elderly, constantly sighing, as if the more pitiful they seemed, the more sympathy they’d receive. Fortunately, Hao Tiemei was sensible; whenever she heard someone sighing, she’d say, “Stop sighing; you were about to turn your luck around, but you sighed it away.”
Liu Dazhi asked his mother, “If the new houses aren’t built, will we stay here forever?”
“Your dad’s in the hospital, and you’re about to go to university; I’m fine living alone.”
“Mom, don’t worry; once I’m in university, I’ll earn money to buy you a big house.”
“Okay, okay, study hard. Teacher Hao said this period is crucial. Even if you’re in the top twenty now, the liberal arts class is notoriously bad; if you’re not in the top ten, it’s useless.”
The next day, Liu Dazhi, Chen Tong, Dingdang, and Chen Xiaowu met for a late-night snack.
They discussed what they could do for Weixiao before she left.
Chen Xiaowu and Dingdang were embarrassed. Chen Tong glanced at Liu Dazhi, implying, “See, I told you so.” Liu Dazhi glanced at Chen Xiaowu, implying, “Stop pretending; you’re acting like strangers.” Dingdang glanced at Liu Dazhi, implying, “I think Chen Xiaowu and I should start dating; don’t tell my mom.” After exchanging glances, they started discussing Weixiao.
“Dingdang, what does Weixiao like most?”
“Andy Lau?”
“She already has autographed posters and photos.”
“She really wants to see an Andy Lau concert!”
“Where?”
“Shenzhen.”
“When?”
“Seriously, it’s just before she leaves!”
“How much will it cost? Travel, accommodation, tickets—it’ll be expensive, right?”
“We calculated; it’ll cost at least 800 yuan per person.”
“Forget it.” Liu Dazhi felt defeated; he couldn’t even afford a cassette tape.
“Dingdang and I can give you 200 yuan,” Chen Xiaowu said.
“That’s the money for your pager!” Dingdang stopped Chen Xiaowu.
“Hey, Dingdang, Chen Xiaowu and I have been together for years; you and Chen Xiaowu have only been together for days; you haven’t even married him yet; why are you interfering in our brotherhood? We can pay you back double later!” Liu Dazhi was unhappy.
“Dazhi, I can also give you 200 yuan,” Chen Tong said.
“You guys are so kind, but I don’t have any money.”
“Then get a job! We have a month of winter break; get a part-time job,” Dingdang looked down on Liu Dazhi.
Liu Dazhi was enlightened. After that, Liu Dazhi disappeared after school, returning home around 8 or 9 PM. Fortunately, he did his homework until 1 or 2 AM; Hao Tiemei was puzzled but also relieved. Hao Huigui noticed Liu Dazhi was sleepy in class: “What’s wrong with you lately?”
Liu Dazhi yawned inappropriately.
“I’ve finished my homework; if I don’t understand something, I’ll figure it out that day.”
Hao Huigui found Liu Dazhi’s homework; it was more meticulous than before.
“I heard you’re working part-time after school?”
“Yeah.”
“Working at this time?”
Liu Dazhi scratched his head, “Weixiao’s leaving soon; I want to earn money to buy her a concert ticket; Chen Tong and Xiaowu are helping with the travel expenses. I think we might not see each other for years after she leaves and we go to different universities; I want to do something for her. If it were you, Teacher Hao, you’d do the same, right?” Liu Dazhi felt a little embarrassed; it was his first time doing something for a girl. Hao Huigui felt a sense of relief; Liu Dazhi had changed; he was trying his best and showing courage.
“But don’t neglect your studies. I plan to take you and the others to Songcheng to see the snow during winter break.”
“Really? All of us? That’s great! Can I go after I finish work?” Liu Dazhi was excited.
“You don’t need to work; we’ll be together.”
“No, this is a shared memory; I want to give her a special memory. Teacher Hao, you said she likes me, right?” Liu Dazhi felt shy. He was much braver than Hao Huigui had been at 17; he wanted to do it, and he dared to do it.
“How much is the concert ticket?”
“I want the best seat for her; it’s 420 yuan.”
“I’ll give you 200 yuan; you just need to earn 220 yuan. I’ll give you ten days; you can’t work after that.”
“Really? Thank you, Teacher Hao! Wow, that’s great!”
Liu Dazhi worked at a construction site, earning 8 yuan for four hours. The first day, he felt energetic, working hard, but his hands blistered, and his back ached. The second day, he could still endure it, but by the third day, even bending over made him cry. He felt like he was dying, only earning 24 yuan. If it weren’t for Weixiao, he wouldn’t know how hard it was to earn money; many workers were over fifty, their hands calloused, their faces etched with the hardships of life. Some worked 12 hours a day, earning 720 yuan a month. On the fourth morning, he ran to Hao Tiemei, saying, “Mom, I’m sorry.” Hao Tiemei didn’t understand.
Liu Dazhi worked after school, did his homework late at night, and struggled to stay awake in class.
“Why are you always sleeping in class? Pay attention!” Weixiao didn’t understand why Liu Dazhi had reverted to his old habits.
“Oh.” Liu Dazhi forced himself to stay awake, but he fell asleep again after two minutes.
After class, Weixiao asked, “What’s wrong with you lately? You’re inattentive in class, your hands are blistered, and you leave early after school; what are you doing?”
“I’m working part-time.” Liu Dazhi blurted out.
“Working? Why? Why are you working?”
“I’m just experiencing life; now I know how hard it is to earn money.”
“Liu Dazhi, I don’t care what you’re doing, but the college entrance exams are coming soon; don’t forget your goals. I’m leaving soon too; if you don’t take responsibility for yourself, no one can help you.”
“Okay, I know, I understand.” Liu Dazhi quickly agreed.
Time flew by; it was the end of the year. Students prepared for exams, adults for the New Year; everyone hoped for a fresh start. Wang Daqian gritted his teeth and booked dozens of tables, inviting the residents to a reunion dinner, apologizing and hoping for good luck. Although the situation was tense, everyone came for the food. Wang Daqian gave a speech, thanking everyone and mentioning the project’s progress and government support. People ate and chatted, ignoring him. Hao Tiemei disagreed with Wang Daqian’s decision; she felt the money should be used wisely, and few residents truly understood his situation.
Few people truly sympathized with Wang Daqian; most considered him a swindler.
“There’s liquor on every table; help yourselves. I’ll toast everyone.” Wang Daqian stood on the stage, downing his drink in one gulp.
“Boss Wang, you crammed hundreds of us into these relocation houses, and now there’s no resolution. What’s going to happen? Do you think a toast is all it takes?” A young man spoke up. Liu Dazhi recognized him—Song Mazzi, a small-time hoodlum from the nearby textile factory, with a group of idle thugs behind him.
“Boss Wang, since you’re so capable, I have two bottles of baijiu [白酒 – strong Chinese liquor] here. Finish them, and we’ll call it a night.”
Wang Daqian smiled, “I’ll owe you that drink. We’ll have it after the project’s finished. Otherwise, if I drink now, I won’t be able to manage the construction site.”
Song Mazzi pressed on, “Wang Daqian, don’t push your luck. We’re giving you face by being here. If you don’t finish these two bottles, you’re not giving me face. Finish them, and we’ll be even; otherwise, I’ll flip every table here.”
Wang Daqian knew that if he didn’t drink, someone would cause trouble, and if things escalated, he’d have to clean up the mess. His family couldn’t handle any more turmoil. In the past, who would dare to talk to him like this? But now, with so many neighbors watching, no one intervened. Weixiao burst into tears, furious at these people rubbing salt into the wound, and also at herself for not being a man, otherwise, she’d have beaten Song Mazzi up. Wang Daqian gave a wry smile, picking up his glass and walking towards Song Mazzi. Hao Tiemei grabbed Wang Daqian, preparing to reason with Song Mazzi.
*Crash!* Song Mazzi slammed his glass on the ground, shards of glass scattering everywhere. Seeing this, Hao Huigui knew he couldn’t avoid getting involved. Years ago, he’d made a mistake, failing to stop Wang Daqian from drinking, ultimately leading to Wang Daqian’s departure. Today, he had to step up, even though he couldn’t drink much and was allergic to alcohol. Before Hao Huigui could steel himself, a figure appeared.
Liu Dazhi stood before Song Mazzi, staring him down.
“Hand them over.”
Song Mazzi froze. Everyone froze. Hao Tiemei quickly pulled Liu Dazhi back. Hao Huigui thought, *This is bad!* Liu Dazhi couldn’t drink as much as he could, and he was also allergic to alcohol.
Song Mazzi sneered, “Scram, kid. You’re too young for this.”
“Finish these two bottles, right? I’ll do it.” Before anyone could react, Liu Dazhi snatched the two bottles of baijiu from Song Mazzi, opened one, and tilted his head back, gulping it down. *Damn it!* Hao Huigui rushed over, grabbing the other bottle, also downing it in one go.
Everyone watched silently as Liu Dazhi and Hao Huigui finished the two bottles of 56-degree baijiu. Afterward, they both wiped their mouths with their sleeves. Standing side-by-side, eyes bloodshot, each holding an empty bottle, they pointed at Song Mazzi and his crew, their aggressive stance suggesting they were ready for a fight. Seeing this, Song Mazzi realized that if he continued, these two might really fight him to the death.
“Alright, that’s it for tonight. We’re done eating.” Song Mazzi and his crew left.
The moment they left, Hao Huigui and Liu Dazhi both vomited. Wang Daqian quickly supported Hao Huigui, while Hao Tiemei supported Liu Dazhi.
Liu Dazhi, slightly drunk, grinned foolishly, “Teacher Hao, why are you drinking too?”
Hao Huigui, struggling to stay upright, said, “You can’t drink much, yet you drank a whole bottle; are you an idiot?”
Liu Dazhi was about to retort when he suddenly swayed and collapsed. Hao Huigui, though slightly better, also felt dizzy. Everyone helped them into the backseat of Wang Daqian’s car.
“Dad, I’ll go with you.” Weixiao quickly got into the passenger seat.
The bumpy ride made Hao Huigui and Liu Dazhi, lying on Hao Tiemei’s lap, vomit profusely.
“Liu Dazhi, you’re surprisingly tough.”
“Hehe, Teacher Hao, Weixiao’s problems are my problems.”
The wind outside made Weixiao’s face flush, a mix of worry and gratitude.
“These kids are crazy!” Hao Tiemei was extremely worried, constantly checking Hao Huigui’s forehead.
“Mom, Mom, where are you?” Liu Dazhi mumbled.
“Mom’s here, here.” Hao Tiemei patted Liu Dazhi’s face.
“Where’s my mom? Where’s my mom?” Hao Huigui also mumbled.
“My mom’s great; I’ll lend her to you.”
“Lend her to me? Hehe, your mom is my mom, got it?” Hao Huigui, lying on Hao Tiemei’s lap, started laughing, tears streaming down his face.
“My mom’s my mom, not yours! But I can lend my mom to you!” Liu Dazhi, babbling incoherently, patted Hao Huigui. “Okay, okay, lend her to me. Mom!” Hao Huigui lost consciousness, tears streaming down his face.
The two were immediately taken to the hospital for stomach pumping; Hao Huigui’s condition was slightly better than Liu Dazhi’s.
“How could you drink so much?! You almost poisoned yourselves! Especially the younger one; he never drinks, yet he drank a whole bottle; what if he died?!” The doctor was furious. Hao Tiemei and Weixiao stayed by their beds all night. After eight hours, Hao Huigui woke up.
“Teacher Hao, you were so impulsive; why did you drink so much?!” Everyone breathed a sigh of relief; Hao Tiemei scolded him with affection. Recalling last night, Hao Huigui realized that if he hadn’t been there, Wang Daqian or Liu Dazhi might have died. He gave a wry smile, “If we hadn’t done that, things might have been worse. How’s Dazhi?”
Liu Dazhi lay in the next bed, still unconscious, receiving an IV drip. Hao Huigui struggled to sit up, moving to Liu Dazhi’s side and touching him. He hadn’t expected his 17-year-old self to be so brave, so selfless, willing to risk his life for others. He’d lost that kind of passion as he grew older. Hao Huigui felt a little proud; he hadn’t lost it completely; he’d also risked his life.
After another ten hours, Liu Dazhi finally opened his eyes. When he regained consciousness, he saw his father, mother, Weixiao, and Hao Huigui watching him.
“Liu Dazhi, are you trying to die?! You almost died, do you know?!” Hao Tiemei was extremely agitated.
Weixiao, seeing Liu Dazhi awake, stood up and left the ward without saying a word.
“Forget it, don’t scold him. He did it for Wang Daqian.” Liu Jianguo said.
“For Wang Daqian?! Weixiao’s father drinks a couple of pounds of baijiu every day without any problems; why did a 17-year-old kid risk his life?! Liu Jianguo! You’re teaching him wrong; if he gets hurt, you’re responsible!” Hao Tiemei, overcome with emotion, started crying.
“Mom, don’t be angry; I’m fine. Uncle Wang can’t drink anymore.” Liu Dazhi forced a smile.
“Can’t drink? Why can’t he drink?”
“Dad, you explain.”
Liu Jianguo, seeing Weixiao leave the ward, said softly, “Wang Daqian repeatedly told us not to say anything, but now we have to. He has severe cirrhosis of the liver and can’t drink anymore. If he’d finished those two bottles, we’d be attending his funeral now.”
“Ah?” Hao Tiemei was stunned. “Dazhi, how did you know?”
Liu Dazhi had gone to see his father about his parents’ divorce and saw Wang Daqian’s medical report on his father’s desk. Neither father nor son said anything.
“We were at Weixiao’s house that day, and when she wasn’t around, Wang Daqian told us himself that he couldn’t drink anymore. So we drank instead,” Hao Huigui quickly interjected.
“Yes, I treated Wang Daqian.” Liu Jianguo quickly added.
“Teacher Hao, Dazhi, you’re both my sons; I won’t let you drink like that again. If anything happens, think about the harm it’ll cause us. Don’t be so reckless again.” Hao Tiemei’s tone softened.
“Okay, okay, they won’t drink again.” Liu Jianguo added.
Hao Huigui looked at Hao Tiemei and Liu Jianguo, feeling a strange mix of emotions. Whether it was his grandfather’s death or this incident, he realized his parents truly had feelings for each other, a dependence and understanding he hadn’t grasped before.
“Mm.” Liu Dazhi looked dejected; he wasn’t worried about his health; he was worried about losing money from missing work.
Youthful loyalty is paramount; he’d do anything he set his mind to.
Liu Dazhi returned to the construction site. Seeing him, the workers gathered around.
Liu Dazhi felt embarrassed and told the foreman, “Brother Fan, I was sick a few days ago; sorry I couldn’t come.”
“You’re the kid who drank with Boss Wang, right? Finished a whole bottle of baijiu?” Brother Fan, smoking a cigarette, asked.
Liu Dazhi hadn’t expected him to know, unsure how to respond.
“You’re surprisingly tough. We worked with Boss Wang before; he’s a good guy. Don’t worry; I’ve collected your wages, paid as a skilled worker. You’re pretty impressive. Sign here.” Brother Fan handed him a paper with his name listed for each day.
“Ah, this isn’t right.” Liu Dazhi felt he shouldn’t take this money.
“Just take it. You wouldn’t be working here if you didn’t need the money. Consider it our way of repaying Boss Wang.”
Seeing Liu Dazhi hesitate, Brother Fan signed his name and handed him 80 yuan. “That’s your wages. Don’t worry; the guys helped finish your work. If you want to thank us, let’s have a drink sometime; you can drink a lot.”
Liu Dazhi, embarrassed, scratched his head and took the money. Leaving the construction site, he saw Chen Xiaowu and Dingdang waiting. Chen Xiaowu was driving a brand-new pickup truck—not as stylish as a car, but a significant upgrade from a three-wheeled vehicle.
“Hurry, hurry, get in. This is Xiaowu’s new car; we can cover two markets now.” Dingdang sat in the passenger seat, Chen Xiaowu looking at her lovingly.
Liu Dazhi jumped into the truck bed, “Xiaowu, steady, let’s go. Let me feel the wind.”
“Alright, let’s go!”
The three of them, in their new pickup truck, sped towards their anticipated future.
Liu Dazhi suddenly realized how much everyone in his class had changed this semester.
Chen Xiaowu became the family’s pillar of support, uniting the stall owners to resist protection fees, becoming the youngest member of the stall owners’ committee, borrowing from the bank to buy a truck, and expanding his business to a second vegetable market. Dingdang, who once despised this type of truck, now sat in the passenger seat with a beaming smile. Six months ago, he wouldn’t dare look Weixiao in the eye; now, he’d even stepped forward to help her father deflect drinks. He felt his life was more fulfilling than ever, constantly striving for a better future.
Time can change many things, but the key is that time changes a person, and only then can it change many things. Liu Dazhi stood in the truck bed, watching the scenery. A cyclist whizzed past from the opposite road. Teacher Hao? Hao Huigui, riding a bicycle, directly entered the gates of Hunan Private High School.
Teacher Hao actually going to Hunan Private High School? Liu Dazhi thought, “Oh no! Teacher Hao wouldn’t defect at the last minute and transfer schools, would he?”
“Xiaowu, stop the car!” Liu Dazhi frantically pounded on the rear window.
“What’s up?”
“Quick! Drive to the private high school; I just saw Teacher Hao!”
“So what?”
“I think he might be transferring schools!”
“Ah?”
“A lack of understanding of something
is actually a lack of interest.”
In the final days of waiting for farewells, Hao Huigui didn’t have many regrets. Janitor Zhou was discharged from the psychiatric hospital. At school, he would greet Hao Huigui proactively. Although they didn’t talk much, Hao Huigui sensed Zhou seemed to understand what he’d said. He also understood that his life in his thirties wasn’t going well, not because of 17-year-old Liu Dazhi’s flaws, but because he’d become someone he wasn’t. He envied Liu Dazhi’s enthusiasm, loyalty, fearlessness, persistence, and “shamelessness.” Hao Huigui bought a camera; he wanted to capture more images, which, if he could take them with him, would be his most precious wealth. If he couldn’t, a “click” would suffice to preserve them in his memory. So he went to Hunan Private High School to say goodbye to He Shifu. Although He Shifu had poached teachers, causing him trouble, he’d also helped him a lot when he first arrived. Hao Huigui just wanted to say “thank you” to He Shifu in person. His old colleagues at the private high school were surprised to see him. After some pleasantries, they told him He Shifu had gone to Zheng Wei’s house.
“To Zheng Wei’s house? Why?”
“Oh, Teacher Hao, you don’t know? Many students who transferred from Hunan No. 5 High have difficult family situations. Although the school offered various rewards, tuition and living expenses were still a significant burden. Zheng Wei’s family doesn’t want him to go to university; they plan for him to learn a trade after graduating high school. Director He used his salary and bonus to help students like Zheng Wei, hoping to prevent regrets in their lives… But many say he transferred for money, which isn’t fair to him. He did it for money, but not for himself.”
“Thank you. I’ll visit Director He again in a few days.” Hao Huigui turned and left. If he hadn’t come to see He Shifu today, he might never have known this secret. Sometimes, people prefer to believe in ugliness, and no one spreads kindness. Sometimes, we say we lack understanding of something, but more often, it’s a lack of interest.
“Teacher Hao!”
Hao Huigui looked up; Chen Xiaowu, Dingdang, and Liu Dazhi were leaning against a pickup truck, calling out to him.
“What are you guys doing here?”
“We saw you. Aren’t you transferring schools?” Liu Dazhi asked.
“Me? I came to see Director He. Why? You guys don’t want me to leave?”
“I told you, Teacher Hao wouldn’t transfer!” Liu Dazhi burst out laughing. Dingdang rolled her eyes.
“Tell me why I wouldn’t transfer.” Hao Huigui asked.
“Well, we’re all at Hunan No. 5 High, and we’re such good friends, and we listen to you; how could you leave us?” Liu Dazhi finished, winking at Hao Huigui.
“What if I did transfer?” Hao Huigui asked.
“Then… we’d cry and beg you not to go. If you really left, we’d break up with you. We’d be sad, but at least we’re a group. You’d be alone; you’d be lonely for the rest of your life.” Liu Dazhi threatened Hao Huigui.
Yes, if he left, they’d be sad for a while, but they were a group. If he lost them, he’d be alone, and that would be truly sad.
Before the winter break, Liu Dazhi continued attending classes during the day and working part-time at night. Weixiao got angry several times, but couldn’t change Liu Dazhi. Weixiao was about to start attending language school; she felt everything was futile. Before, everything was under her control; now, she felt powerless.
After school, Weixiao sat at her desk, lost in thought. Liu Dazhi, for once, didn’t immediately pack up and leave; instead, he said, “Going home? I need to talk to you.”
“Oh, okay.” The two walked out of the classroom. A light rain started, gradually intensifying. Liu Dazhi had an umbrella, but he felt awkward sharing it with Weixiao, so he put it away. Weixiao walked ahead, Liu Dazhi trailing behind; both were slightly damp. Weixiao’s expression was calm, as if preparing for departure, while Liu Dazhi seemed restless, anticipating something.
“Liu Dazhi, what’s wrong with you?” Weixiao turned, seeing Liu Dazhi muttering to himself.
“Oh, just talking to myself.” Liu Dazhi looked embarrassed.
“You said you had something to tell me; say it.”
“I have something for you.” Liu Dazhi put down his bag, rummaged inside, pulled out an envelope, and handed it to Weixiao. His expression was strange—a mix of shyness, apprehension, and pride. He handed Weixiao the envelope and said nothing.
Weixiao opened the envelope and saw two round-trip train tickets and a VIP ticket to an Andy Lau concert in Shenzhen.
“What’s this? For me?”
“You’re leaving soon, so… I wanted to give you a gift, hoping you’d remember this, hoping you’d be happy.” Liu Dazhi said shyly.
“So, you’ve been working part-time after school to earn money for this?” Weixiao’s tone revealed no emotion.
“Mm.” Liu Dazhi nodded, smiling. He hadn’t expected Weixiao to react this way; he’d planned his response, but Weixiao’s indifference caught him off guard.
Weixiao held the envelope, staring at Liu Dazhi.
“Really, just take it. I can get a refund if you don’t want it.” Liu Dazhi continued to persuade her.
“Liu Dazhi…” Weixiao lowered her head, struggling to control her emotions.
“What’s wrong? Don’t cry. You don’t need to be so moved; I’ll buy you even better gifts later.” Liu Dazhi felt a little panicked.
“Can you guys stop doing this?!”
“What… what’s wrong?”
“Can you stop doing things for me, hoping I’ll be happy, making all the decisions for me? I don’t like you working part-time, borrowing money, pretending to be happy, feeling satisfied! Have you considered my feelings? My dad said he was doing this for me, sending me to study in America. Did he ask my opinion? He thought I’d be happier without him; would I be? I like Andy Lau, but Shenzhen is so far away; the train and concert tickets cost so much; your parents’ monthly salary isn’t that much! Do I deserve this? You all say you’re happy as long as I’m happy; it’s all for yourselves, not considering my feelings! You’re happy, but have you considered my feelings?!”
This was the first time Liu Dazhi had seen Weixiao so angry.
Liu Dazhi remained silent, stunned. But Weixiao seemed to have said nothing wrong.
Passersby glanced at Weixiao and Liu Dazhi, but Weixiao didn’t avoid their gazes; she was genuinely upset, having suppressed her emotions for a long time. She didn’t want to burden anyone.
“You sleep in class, work part-time after school; you have your life. Do you think I’ll be happy just sitting on the train, listening to my favorite songs? Am I a fool to you? Only a fool wouldn’t consider where a gift comes from? Liu Dazhi, you and I think differently! You want to do things for me, hoping I’ll be happy, but you don’t understand me at all! You’re happy, but have you considered my feelings? You think you’re being heroic, manly, but you don’t know how much trouble you’ve caused! I really hate men like you, always thinking you can handle everything, making decisions for others, not considering the consequences!” Weixiao cried as she spoke. Liu Dazhi’s heart ached; he felt terrible that Weixiao was so upset, and he regretted not considering her feelings. He felt incredibly annoyed at himself; he’d worked so hard for a girl, yet it ended in failure.
“I’m sorry… I didn’t think about these things. Really sorry.” Liu Dazhi felt terrible. Weixiao was right; he was selfish, burdening others for his own happiness. He felt so dejected, struggling to even walk. He took the envelope from Weixiao, put it in his bag, and turned to leave. Weixiao didn’t want to look at him. The rain intensified.
Liu Dazhi walked a few steps, then stopped, turning back. His wet bangs covered his eyes; he wiped the rain from his forehead, his voice choked with emotion, shouting loudly to Weixiao, “You’re leaving! I just wanted to leave an impression on you! I just wanted to do something to make you happy! I just wanted you to know I’m working hard! If I made you unhappy, I’m sorry! But I really wanted to leave you with a good memory!”
After saying this, Liu Dazhi walked a few steps, then stopped again, turning back. He wiped the rain and tears from his face.
“Weixiao, maybe you think I’m a fool, a childish person, but I just want to know, have you ever liked me, even a little?” Liu Dazhi mustered all his courage, knowing this might be his last chance. After asking, he felt strangely calm.
Weixiao took a deep breath, “I liked you, but now I hate you; I never want to see you again.”
Liu Dazhi gave a wry smile, tears streaming down his face, mixing with the rain. He’d gotten his answer, but he also knew it meant losing her.
“When I finally dared to tell you what’s in my heart, I’d already won. If you could hear my heartfelt words, we’d both have won.”
I can do anything for the girl I like. Not to make her happy, but because of her, I can become invincible. I’m willing to do things I never thought I could do. Not to make her worry, but to show her I can overcome difficulties because of her.
I want to do everything I can for the girl I like. Not to show off, not to be a hero, I know I’m insignificant before her, so small she might not even notice me.
So I want to become bigger, so big she’ll feel someone’s presence even with her eyes closed.
So big she’ll know, even on the street, her hair will feel the wind because of me.
Even if she doesn’t like me in the end, I can proudly say: I once loved someone so earnestly.
Hao Huigui read Liu Dazhi’s essay; the entire class was stunned. After reading the last sentence, the class fell silent for a moment, then a student applauded, then two, then everyone started clapping. It wasn’t because the writing was excellent, but because it captured the essence of youthful love.
In the past, Liu Dazhi would have been embarrassed, but Weixiao was sitting beside him. What’s there to be shy about when you like someone? If liking someone gives you strength, what’s there to be ashamed of? This isn’t “puppy love” as adults see it; it’s “wanting to become better” as teenagers see it—wanting to become better because of someone’s presence, like Dingdang and Chen Xiaowu. Because of this person, you feel your life is real, with real pain and real love.
Weixiao was moved by Liu Dazhi’s essay, but she said nothing; it seemed inappropriate to say anything. Weixiao knew she’d spoken harshly that day, but she still hadn’t gotten over leaving for America. But she didn’t show it; she continued attending classes at Hunan No. 5 High, going to language school in the afternoon, and preparing for her trip to America at night.
During this time, everyone’s emotions were complex. Some were happy, some lost, some wanted to forge their own path, some wanted to enter unfamiliar environments, some were preparing to leave…
The music store repeatedly played Lu Fang’s “Friend, Don’t Cry.” [https://youtu.be/G8yQTz81sHg]
Is there a window that can prevent despair?
Seeing the world, it’s like a dream.
Some cry, some laugh.
Some lose, some grow old.
In the end, isn’t it all the same?
Is there a love that can prevent hurt?
So many heartfelt words over the years.
What can’t be sobered up, what can’t be forgotten.
Moving forward, you can’t look back.
Friend, don’t cry, I’m still your heart’s home.
Friend, don’t cry, believe in your path.
In the world, there’s so much confusion and infatuation.
Your pain, I also feel.
Friend, don’t cry, I’m always in the depths of your heart.
Friend, don’t cry, I’m with you, you won’t be lonely.
In the sea of people, it’s rare to find true friends.
This feeling, please don’t ignore.
Hao Huigui, Liu Dazhi, Chen Tong, Dingdang, and Weixiao—everyone bought this cassette tape.
The reason can’t be explained; I just wanted to keep this feeling, hidden in the music. Weixiao was packing her clothes at home; the radio was playing a hotline segment, and Dingdang’s voice came through. She was still enthusiastic about calling radio stations. “I want to dedicate a song to a few good friends. No matter what happens, remember that it’s rare to meet true friends in life. No matter when or where, I hope everyone cherishes this feeling and doesn’t forget each other.” Weixiao was rummaging through old clothes in the corner of her closet; she wanted to take one of her father’s old T-shirts so she could always see his shadow while in America. As she searched, she found a notebook hidden in the deepest part of the closet. Weixiao opened it curiously; inside, she found her father’s medical records. Weixiao froze; it turned out Teacher Hao and Liu Dazhi had helped her father deflect drinks because of this. Weixiao quietly put the medical records back, closed the closet, and sat on the floor, crying silently. Hearing her father open the door, she quickly wiped away her tears, pretending nothing had happened.
“What’s wrong? Just crying? Sad to leave?” Her father forced a weary smile.
“Dad, I’ll miss you.” Weixiao’s tears welled up again.
Wang Daqian walked over and hugged Weixiao, then said, “I’m sorry, I didn’t discuss sending you to live with your mother in America. All these years, I haven’t talked to you about your mother. Actually, I should have left with her back then, but I was also focused on my career…”
This was the first time Weixiao had heard her father talk about her mother. The most fortunate thing was that her father didn’t say anything bad about her mother; the questions Weixiao wanted to ask her mother now had answers.
“I’ve changed; I can now understand many things I couldn’t accept before.”
Liu Dazhi gradually realized that although youthful growth is about boundless possibilities, teenagers are powerless in many situations. He desperately wanted answers to everything but disliked many of those answers. He wanted everyone’s approval but ultimately disliked that version of himself. He wanted to do many things but couldn’t figure out the order. He found himself in a strange situation—either having nothing he wanted to do or suddenly having several things to do simultaneously. He’d done many foolish things and said many foolish words. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t go back to that day, couldn’t take back those words, but those memories constantly reminded him that he was no longer the same Liu Dazhi.
Weixiao also gradually realized that no matter how young she was when she learned self-reliance and self-protection, no matter how capable she was of taking down several boys at once, no matter how quickly she made decisions and took responsibility, people still need emotions. Everything that happened these days seemed to transform her into a different person, more easily moved, more understanding of others. Before, her heart felt cold, with sunlight only on her face. Now, she had many things she wanted to say to everyone. She regretted the things she’d said to Liu Dazhi, but she also knew that once something happened, you couldn’t pretend it hadn’t. Once words were spoken, they couldn’t be taken back. Only time and opportunity could deepen their feelings and allow them to speak more truthfully.
Hao Huigui watched them, observing their changes day by day—growth, rebirth. On the surface, everyone remained the same, but the grass in their hearts was growing wildly, transforming into fields, grasslands, forests, and finally, an endless ocean.
At the end of this semester, Chen Tong was still first, scoring 680 points. Liu Dazhi was fourteenth, scoring over 500 points. Weixiao didn’t take the exam, saying, “Auntie Hao said that for every rank you improve, she’ll buy you an extra cassette tape. So I let someone get a lower score than you. Remember to buy me a cassette tape.” Weixiao smiled, as if their previous arguments had vanished with the wind. No one mentioned that day again; it was sealed away in their hearts, in the safest place.
Liu Dazhi returned the train and concert tickets, repaying his debts and giving the rest to Chen Xiaowu as seed money for his small business. Looking at the scars on his hands from carrying bricks, he didn’t regret it. After half a year of hard work, Chen Xiaowu rented a small storefront, selling not only bean sprouts but also soy milk and tofu. Because of the generous portions and high quality, his business thrived. He even put a spring mattress in the storefront, saving time commuting home. After finishing work, he’d prepare for the next day. Initially, he’d been reluctant for Dingdang to see his struggles at the market, but later, when Dingdang started helping him, he realized he’d made an excellent choice.
During winter break, Liu Dazhi helped Chen Xiaowu at the market every day. Whenever he was with Chen Xiaowu, he felt energized about the future.
“Xiaowu, you work from the moment you wake up until you sleep; don’t you find it boring?”
“No. I wasted too much time before; this is much better. I’m always racing against time; I want to get married soon and marry Dingdang.”
“Hey, have you considered what you’ll do if Dingdang gets into a university out of town?” Liu Dazhi asked.
“I’ve already thought about that. Everyone’s searching for someone worth dedicating themselves to. Everyone has their own standards. If she meets someone better out of town, and if I love her, why wouldn’t I want her to be happy? I’ve also figured it out; I have to make Dingdang feel that I’m reliable and hardworking, that I can make our future better, that she can see hope in me, then she’ll marry me without hesitation. Besides, do you know why long-distance relationships often fail?”
“Loneliness leads to infidelity.”
“Why are people lonely?”
“Because no one’s around, so they find someone nearby.”
“Look at me, I’m busy all day and never feel lonely. Lonely people are inherently empty. Besides, if she’s lonely out of town, I’ll take the train to see her. If the train’s too slow, I’ll fly.”
“Forget it, with your little storefront, how can you afford trains and planes? Do you have that much money and time?”
“You’re right, Dazhi. Most long-distance relationships fail because one person is empty, and the other can’t manage their time, and they don’t have money. So I’ll just earn more money! When she needs me, I’ll be there!”
Liu Dazhi suddenly felt energized. If Chen Xiaowu could do this, he and Dingdang wouldn’t have problems. If he worked hard, he could do the same for Weixiao! When Weixiao was lonely, he’d have the money and time to see her, and they’d be fine. But if problems still arose, it wouldn’t be because of distance; they’d have problems even if they lived together. He’d never thought of fighting reality. Although Chen Xiaowu valued material things, believing money could solve everything, was that really true? Didn’t Oscar Wilde say, “When I was young, I thought that money was everything; now that I’m old, I know it’s true.”
Chen Xiaowu’s dedication to creating wealth through hard work, his down-to-earth approach to life, was far better than empty dreams. Life is lived, not imagined. Although Liu Dazhi never admired Chen Xiaowu, he no longer thought selling bean sprouts was bad. Chen Xiaowu’s 120% effort was truly inspiring. Such dedication could infect those around him. Liu Dazhi felt his bl00d boiling; the person who always scored lower than him had become his most inspiring role model.
Hearing that Teacher Hao was taking everyone to Songcheng to see snow, everyone was thrilled.
“Teacher Hao, when are we going?”
“Maybe a few days before school starts. Weixiao’s tutoring will be ending soon.”
“Great. Let’s finish reviewing quickly. Xiaowu, adjust your schedule too.”
“Come, let me take a picture of you all.” Hao Huigui took out his camera.
“Teacher Hao, have you become a photography enthusiast recently?”
“You’re about to graduate; I want to take some photos as a memento.”
“Teacher Hao, you’ll definitely miss me, Chen Tong, and Weixiao. But you won’t miss Chen Xiaowu and Dingdang so much.” Liu Dazhi said.
“Why?” Dingdang was unhappy.
“Because you can’t get into university, so you’ll only be able to attend a local college; you can come to school to see Teacher Hao every day.” Liu Dazhi chuckled.
Dingdang angrily chased after Liu Dazhi.
Everyone laughed, including Hao Huigui. He knew Dingdang, despite her grades, would stay in Hunan because of Chen Xiaowu. Later, Chen Xiaowu, despite his shyness, persevered, and Hao Hongmei, seeing his hard work and success, finally accepted him.
The day to see snow was approaching. Liu Dazhi was doing homework when the phone rang. Chen Xiaowu’s brother was crying, asking Liu Dazhi to save his brother. It turned out that Chen Xiaowu, having united the stall owners to refuse protection fees, was taken away by gangsters that morning. The gangsters asked Chen Xiaowu’s brother to have his father negotiate. Chen Shihui was unwell, so his brother called Liu Dazhi.
Liu Dazhi immediately called Chen Tong: “If Mom calls and I’m not home, tell your dad to send someone to find us. Don’t say anything now; I’m going to find Chen Xiaowu!”
Chen Tong said, “No, you can’t go alone; we’ll go together.”
“No, I’m calling you so you can protect me later.” Liu Dazhi said anxiously.
“It’s okay; we’ll go together; they won’t dare do anything to us. Don’t forget what my dad does.”
They agreed to meet at the street corner in fifteen minutes. Before leaving, Liu Dazhi looked in the mirror; his school uniform looked unassertive, so he changed into his fake Nike tracksuit. Feeling empty-handed, he grabbed two beers from the kitchen, gulping them down for courage, his head feeling dizzy. He carried the two empty beer bottles downstairs. Halfway down, he went back to call Hao Huigui; besides Chen Tong, Hao Huigui was the only person he could trust.
But Liu Dazhi didn’t expect Hao Huigui to be so nervous on the phone, as if something terrible was about to happen.
“Liu Dazhi, listen carefully; the college entrance exams are coming soon; you can’t have any problems. You might get hurt today; let the police handle it; understand?”
“But Teacher Hao…”
“You and Chen Tong shouldn’t go; tell me the address; I’ll go.”
“Teacher Hao, it’s not that serious. Chen Tong and I are going; everyone knows his dad; nothing will happen.”
“Liu Dazhi, have I ever been this serious? You must listen to me; don’t go! Otherwise, the consequences will be dire; understand?”
“Understood…”
“Wait for me at the street corner; I’ll be there soon; don’t leave.”
“Okay, okay, Teacher Hao, don’t worry.”
Hao Huigui’s anxiety subsided; he hung up and ran towards the school gate. He absolutely couldn’t let Liu Dazhi and Chen Tong go negotiate. He remembered clearly that nineteen years ago, he and Chen Tong had gone to negotiate, resulting in injuries for both of them. Especially Chen Tong, who’d been hit by a brick, suffering a concussion, and nearly becoming a vegetable, requiring three months of recovery, affecting his college entrance exams, preventing him from getting into Peking University. After graduating, he became a small civil servant. Because of this incident, Chen Xiaowu and Liu Dazhi felt guilty towards Chen Tong.
Hao Huigui was frantic, cycling to the street corner, but he didn’t see Liu Dazhi and Chen Tong. His heart sank; he turned towards the tobacco factory warehouse where the negotiation was taking place, turning, entering the alley, turning right, running a red light, then turning right again. Hao Huigui couldn’t hear any car horns; the only sound was his racing heart.
Hao Huigui made a sharp turn, seeing Liu Dazhi and Chen Tong on a mountain bike ahead.
“Stop!” Hao Huigui yelled.
The mountain bike stopped.
“Teacher Hao, why are you here?” Liu Dazhi got off the front bar, noticing Hao Huigui was drenched in sweat, feeling a little embarrassed.
“What’s in your hands?”
Liu Dazhi quickly hid the beer bottles.
“Liu Dazhi, can you be more rational? This should be handled by Chen Tong’s father; it’s the safest way. Before you act, can you think of a better solution? Is this kind of reckless loyalty meaningful?”
“It is.” Liu Dazhi said firmly, “Chen Xiaowu is my best friend; if he’s in trouble, I have to be with him! If I don’t go, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life!”
“Okay, but have you considered Chen Tong? If he gets hurt, it’ll affect his college entrance exams; won’t you regret it?”
Chen Tong added, “Teacher Hao, it’s not Dazhi’s fault; I don’t regret it.” Hao Huigui stood motionless, staring at Chen Tong, expecting him to understand.
Chen Tong’s lips moved, “My life has always been smooth, seemingly lacking nothing, until I transferred to the liberal arts class and met you guys. I realized this world doesn’t lack correct things; it lacks meaningful things. Meaningful things might include mistakes. If we get hurt today, I’ll know I’m willing to get hurt for my friends.”
I didn’t know my true self could be like this, but I like this self who can change for my friends again and again. Teacher Hao, if you’re worried, you can call the police, but we still have to go.” Liu Dazhi turned, handing the beer bottle to Chen Tong, then took another from his bag, hiding it in his coat. The two leaned their mountain bikes against the wall and walked towards the warehouse.
Everyone has their own choices, even if it means getting hurt, they’ll take responsibility and won’t regret it. Hao Huigui remained where he was, thinking about Liu Dazhi and Chen Tong’s words. If we always walk the right path, that’s not our life; that’s just a life that seems right. Often, our regrets aren’t because we did something wrong, but because we didn’t do anything. One is willing to do anything for his friends, the other doesn’t want to leave any regrets in his youth. There are so many right things in this world, but without wrong, right becomes meaningless. During these days back in my 17-year-old self’s life, did I only do right things? Hao Huigui thought for a moment; it seemed not; some things were wrong, but they showed me different scenery. If something teaches you a lesson and broadens your perspective, maybe it wasn’t wrong. Knowing you might get hurt, yet still doing it—who can guarantee every decision in their youth is right? “Right” might not be the only right thing in this world; even if it’s wrong, so what? Hao Huigui thought about his own life at 36—always walking the right path, only to end up in a dead end.
“Wait!” Hao Huigui shouted. Liu Dazhi and Chen Tong turned, seeing Hao Huigui leaning his bike against the road, picking up a stick, and walking towards them. Hao Huigui walked between Chen Tong and Liu Dazhi; the three exchanged glances and smiled. So what if we get hurt? So what if we’re wrong? If we don’t do something we want, how will we know what our true selves are?
“Those years’ regrets aren’t because we did something wrong,
but because we didn’t do anything.”
Eight or nine people were waiting for them.
Seeing the three of them approach, three or four people surrounded them from behind, trapping them in the middle.
“Go talk to your friends and figure out what to do next,” the leader, a punk with bleached hair, gestured for Chen Xiaowu to come forward.
Chen Xiaowu approached Liu Dazhi, his face bruised, clearly having been beaten.
“Teacher Hao, why are you here?”
“I was afraid they couldn’t handle a fight, so I came myself. Everything alright?”
“It’s fine; we just got bumped around a bit, nothing serious.”
“Chen Xiaowu, this time we’re just letting you off with a warning; next time, it won’t be so easy. Don’t cause trouble again; understand? We’re letting you off this time.”
“What do you mean?” Liu Dazhi asked Chen Xiaowu.
“They’re letting me off this time, telling me not to meddle in the market’s protection fees anymore; they won’t bother me. These guys are all idle, relying on protection fees to support their families? I might as well join them.” Chen Xiaowu deliberately spoke loudly.
“Chen Xiaowu, if you don’t agree, none of you are leaving here.”
“What do you want?” Liu Dazhi stood in front of Chen Xiaowu.
“What do we want? A lesson!” A thug lunged forward, about to slap Liu Dazhi. Chen Tong quickly grabbed his wrist, flipped it, and threw him to the ground. The thugs immediately swarmed them; the four exchanged glances—let’s fight. Although outnumbered, Hao Huigui and the others weren’t at a disadvantage. A chaotic brawl erupted. Although Chen Xiaowu was short, his moves were effective. Liu Dazhi threw wild punches, using anything he could grab as a weapon, preventing the thugs from getting close. Hao Huigui was like a wild horse, easily handling two or three people at once. Chen Tong remained calm, his punches precise, constantly protecting Liu Dazhi from surprise attacks. Suddenly, a thug grabbed a beer bottle and swung it at Liu Dazhi; it was incredibly fast. Seeing this, Chen Tong leaped forward to shield Liu Dazhi. The bottle came closer and closer to Chen Tong’s head; he closed his eyes, bracing for impact.
“Crash!” A loud sound as the bottle shattered.
Everyone stopped, looking at Chen Tong. At that moment, Chen Tong felt completely numb. He opened his eyes; he wasn’t injured, but Hao Huigui stood before him, bl00d streaming from his forehead. The thug who’d thrown the bottle had been kicked in the groin by Hao Huigui and lay on the ground. Seeing the bl00d pouring from Hao Huigui’s forehead, the thugs, fearing trouble, exchanged glances and fled.
“Teacher Hao, are you okay?” Chen Tong quickly took off his coat and T-shirt, pressing them firmly against Hao Huigui’s forehead. In moments, the shirt was soaked with bl00d. Hao Huigui opened his eyes; thankfully, he could still see. Sitting on the ground, he touched his forehead, “Looks like I’ll need several stitches.”
Liu Dazhi and Chen Xiaowu immediately ran to call for an ambulance. Hao Huigui, surprisingly calm, thought: If I’d shielded Chen Tong, would that have changed the outcome? If Chen Tong hadn’t suffered a concussion, would his college entrance exam scores have been better?
After this fight, Chen Xiaowu united all the stall owners, vowing to restore order to the market and prevent these thugs from continuing their extortion. Afterward, whenever there was trouble in the market, the stall owners immediately sought Chen Xiaowu’s help.
Hao Huigui rested for a week; his trip to Songcheng was postponed. Because he needed stitches, the doctor shaved his head. Seeing Hao Huigui’s bald head, Liu Dazhi laughed every time he saw him; Hao Tiemei knitted him a wool cap. Several parents took turns caring for him at the hospital, especially Hao Tiemei, who was particularly heartbroken to hear he’d been injured protecting her son. She made soup for him every morning. Because of Hao Huigui, Liu Dazhi also enjoyed many delicious meals.
“Teacher Hao, just stay in bed; I swear this is the best food my mom’s ever made.”
“Liu Dazhi, what nonsense are you talking? If you hadn’t acted recklessly, would Teacher Hao have been injured? Why don’t you just stay in bed forever?” Hao Tiemei started scolding Liu Dazhi again. Liu Jianguo entered the ward to visit Hao Huigui.
“Teacher Hao.” Liu Dazhi called out.
“Mm?”
“Are we still going to Songcheng?”
“Of course.”
“School starts next week.”
“Yeah.” Hao Huigui sat up and looked at the calendar on the wall.
“Liu Dazhi!” Hao Tiemei was about to scold him again.
“It’s okay, it’s okay. I promised to take them to see snow; look, I’m already better; I’ve been eating your cooking every day, and I’ve even gained weight.”
“Tiemei, don’t you think Teacher Hao and our Dazhi look quite alike?” Liu Jianguo looked at Hao Huigui’s bald head.
“Really, that’s why I said he’s like another son of mine.”
Liu Dazhi rolled his eyes.
“Dazhi, tell everyone; shall we go tomorrow?”
“Great! No need to tell anyone; everyone’s ready; we can leave this afternoon!” Liu Dazhi was excited.
“Teacher Hao, are you really okay?” Hao Tiemei was worried.
“I’m fine; I just need to get the stitches removed in a few days.”
“Just don’t go crazy.” Liu Jianguo said.
“Dazhi, what’s that in your hand?” Hao Huigui saw Liu Dazhi holding a familiar notebook.
“Oh? This? I found it last week; it’s pretty interesting.” Liu Dazhi held up the notebook.
Hao Huigui’s heart sank; wasn’t this the diary he’d found in the taxi?
“You can write diaries in it, and there’s a section for talking to your future self.”
“Let me see.” Hao Huigui took the notebook.
Liu Dazhi had already written some entries, different from the ones Hao Huigui had seen before.
The first question: What was the most confusing time in your life? Who was there for you?
Liu Dazhi wrote: Probably now. I’m about to take the college entrance exam. Some friends aren’t taking it; some are going abroad. But thankfully, we’re still together, spending every day together.
The second question: Where are you now? What kind of life do you yearn for in ten years? Who do you want to become?
Liu Dazhi’s answer: I live in a small city. In ten years, I hope to have a job I love, to live each day with passion, to solve problems, and not be afraid of difficulties. I want to become someone who can encourage and help others grow, like my teacher, Teacher Hao.
The third question: What do you want to say to your closest friends now?
The page was blank; Liu Dazhi hadn’t written anything yet.
Hao Huigui felt both moved and anxious. Moved because he hadn’t disappointed Liu Dazhi; anxious because Liu Dazhi had started writing in the diary; once he finished the last question, Hao Huigui would have to leave.
“Dazhi, you haven’t answered the third question yet?”
“Ah, I haven’t decided yet; I have so much to say, but I don’t know where to start.” Liu Dazhi put away the notebook. “I’ll go tell everyone now.” He ran out of the ward.
Hao Huigui knew his time was running out. He hadn’t prepared for a farewell; it felt like a dream, one he wouldn’t invest in, one he could wake up from at any moment. Yet, in this dream, he’d rediscovered his 17-year-old self, his parents, and his friends, and a world he’d never truly appreciated.
Hao Tiemei was packing to leave, saying goodbye to Hao Huigui: “Teacher Hao, after you get back from seeing the snow, come to our house for dinner.”
“Dazhi’s mom, Dazhi’s dad, let’s take a picture together. Thank you for taking care of me.”
“Why are you suddenly saying this? You’re not disappearing.”
Yeah, but we won’t see each other again.
Hao Huigui stared at Hao Tiemei and Liu Jianguo, wanting to preserve their youthful images in his memory. What else did he need to tell his mother? Liu Dazhi had changed so much; he was stronger and more independent than his 17-year-old self.
“Dazhi’s mom, next time Dazhi asks you to buy something, don’t say he looks like that thing anymore; he said he has psychological trauma.” Hao Huigui said with a smile.
Hao Tiemei also smiled, “I thought you were going to say something else. Okay, I promise.”
“Also, don’t save money for Dazhi’s marriage; let him choose what he likes; I guarantee he’ll choose well.”
“Teacher Hao, you’re only leaving, stop acting like you’re saying your last words. Come to our house for dinner during the New Year; we’ll talk then.” Hao Tiemei’s tone was slightly reproachful.
After Hao Tiemei and Liu Jianguo left the ward, Hao Huigui said in his heart, “Dad, Mom, goodbye.” Hao Tiemei suddenly returned, walking to the bedside, gently hugging Hao Huigui: “I don’t know why you suddenly said all that. When you first came for a home visit, I felt you were familiar and sensible. Don’t forget, you’re also my son.” She patted Hao Huigui’s back and left the ward.
On the eve of their trip to see the snow, no one could sleep.
Hao Huigui was reluctant to leave; he was afraid he’d forgotten something, so he wrote down everything he could remember. Liu Dazhi’s bag wasn’t big enough, so he wore all his thick clothes, filling his bag with cassette tapes: Jacky Cheung, Jeff Chang, Wakin Chau, Lu Fang, Little Tigers, Stefanie Sun, Rene Liu, Jimmy Lin, Sandy Lam, Beyond, Leslie Cheung, Chyi Chin, Wallace Chung, Edison Chen, Emil Chau, Zhang Yusheng, Chyi Chin…
Chen Xiaowu had never been on a train before; as soon as he sat down, he stood up, saying to Hao Huigui, “Teacher Hao, can I walk around? I want to see what the train looks like.”
“Of course, just walk along the aisle.”
“I’ll go with you!” Dingdang raised her hand.
“Remember to keep your tickets; show them to the conductor if they check.”
The train was crowded; Chen Xiaowu held Dingdang’s hand; she felt a little embarrassed. Hao Huigui hadn’t truly understood Chen Xiaowu before; although his family was poor, he wasn’t self-deprecating; he’d never been on a train, yet he’d said he wanted to see it; he’d held Dingdang’s hand in public; he’d instinctively protected Dingdang.
Weixiao took out an English vocabulary book, preparing for her upcoming language exam.
Chen Tong and Liu Dazhi sat together, each with their Walkmans.
“You brought so many?”
“It’s my first trip; I didn’t know which ones to bring, so I brought them all. Listen to this, ‘Friend, Don’t Cry,’ it’s really good.”
“I’m listening to it now.” Chen Tong paused his Walkman and showed Liu Dazhi the cassette tape.
“We’re listening to the same song. There’s a new singer, Edison Chen; have you heard him? He’s really good.”
“Teacher Hao, what are you listening to?” Liu Dazhi noticed Hao Huigui was also listening to a cassette tape, using the same Walkman as him.
“Richie Jen’s ‘Too Soft-Hearted.'”
“I’ve never heard of this singer; is it good?”
Hao Huigui handed his earphones to Liu Dazhi. After a few seconds, Liu Dazhi exclaimed, “Wow, this song is amazing! Teacher Hao, how did you know about this singer? Can I borrow it later?” Liu Dazhi was excited to find a new song he liked.
“I’ll let you listen now. Give me your ‘Across the Ocean to See You.'”
“Okay, I have it.”
These songs were filled with memories, reflecting their feelings at the time. Everyone wore earphones, immersed in their own music, thinking about their hopes and dreams.
Along the way, Liu Dazhi shouted excitedly; Chen Tong and Weixiao remained calm.
“Snow! Look! Is that snow on the mountain?!”
“Wow! It’s really snow! Teacher Hao! It’s snow!”
The entire train car could hear their voices; other passengers laughed. Youth is amazing; everything feels new. Hao Huigui had booked a small inn in the mountains of Songcheng; it had beautiful snow scenery and hot springs.
When they arrived, it was already dark; they couldn’t see the snow clearly, but Liu Dazhi and the others were still excited, although exhausted from their journey.
“Teacher Hao, although it’s dark, it’s so beautiful… so beautiful…” Liu Dazhi said wearily.
“Xiaowu, let’s have a snowball fight…” Dingdang tugged at Chen Xiaowu.
“Let’s rest early; I’m exhausted… really, more tired than working.” Chen Xiaowu collapsed onto the bed.
Hao Huigui had booked three connecting rooms—one for the girls, one for himself, and one for the three boys. Everyone was exhausted but still excited. After lying down for fifteen minutes, Liu Dazhi asked, “Who’s awake?”
“Me.”
“Me too.”
“Let’s go chat with them.”
The three boys got dressed and quietly passed Hao Huigui’s room. They saw the desk lamp was on. Liu Dazhi pressed his ear against the door and listened for a while, but there was no sound. The three then went to knock on the girls’ door. They’d barely knocked when the door opened.
“We were just about to come find you; we couldn’t sleep!” Dingdang complained.
“Shh, keep your voices down; don’t wake Teacher Hao.”
“Then what are we doing?”
“Just wandering around, looking for a place to chat.”
The weather in Songcheng was strange; although there was snow everywhere, it wasn’t cold. The five of them found a wooden house built along the mountain, specifically for viewing the snow scenery. The previous guests had left, and there were still some unextinguished embers in the fireplace. Liu Dazhi poked his head out from the room, using the moonlight to look at the silver expanse covering the mountains.
The snowy mountains at night were so beautiful. The five of them all exclaimed in amazement.
“I’m so happy to be watching the snow with you all,” Weixiao suddenly said. “I hope even after I go abroad, our friendship remains the same.”
“I hope I can get into Peking University, choose a major I like, and make my parents proud,” Chen Tong said.
“I think things are already great; I hope life stays like this,” Chen Xiaowu said, looking at Dingdang.
“Me too,” Dingdang said shyly.
“I hope things will only get better.”
On a snowy night, everything was quiet. Beside the warm embers, everyone’s faces were illuminated.
“Dazhi, what about you?”
“Me? I hope we can come here every year, sit together, even if we go to other places, we can still come back here, sit together, like this, just chatting. Why am I so easily moved? Strange.”
A person’s growth begins with softness.
A person’s growth begins with listening.
A person’s growth begins with encountering similar souls.
A person’s growth begins with feeling lively even when doing nothing.
A person’s growth also begins with a lively group, yet each person feeling quiet.
“Possessing someone, you can spend a lifetime accompanying them, or remembering them for a lifetime. But the best way is to become them.”
The next day, pushing open the window, a bright world appeared, covered in fresh snow—on the trees, the ground, the mountains.
The five of them changed clothes and ran straight into the snow to roll around and have a snowball fight. Hao Huigui took out his camera and carefully recorded everything.
“Can you eat snow?”
“Let me try.” Liu Dazhi took a big bite, his mouth almost freezing.
“It’s sweet.”
“*Slap!*” A snowball hit his face. Weixiao laughed from a few meters away. The five of them tumbled into a heap, chasing and running until they were tired, then lay down in the snow. Hao Huigui climbed a tree and took a photo of everyone lying in the snow.
Liu Dazhi wandered around near the inn and found a patch of fresh snow. He wrote on it: Weixiao likes Liu Dazhi. Hearing someone coming, he quickly erased everything. Chen Xiaowu and Dingdang sat quietly in the small wooden house, leaning against each other, watching the snowy mountains.
“Where’s Weixiao?” Liu Dazhi asked Chen Xiaowu.
“She seems to be with Chen Tong.”
With Chen Tong? Liu Dazhi searched the inn, top to bottom, but didn’t see Chen Tong and Weixiao. He had a bad feeling. Liu Dazhi rushed into Hao Huigui’s room. Hao Huigui was writing something; seeing Liu Dazhi enter, he quickly stopped.
“Teacher Hao, have you seen Chen Tong and Weixiao?”
“No, what’s wrong?”
“Oh, Chen Xiaowu said they’re together, but I looked everywhere and couldn’t find them.” Liu Dazhi’s tone was a little strange. Hao Huigui immediately understood: “Don’t overthink it; Weixiao’s leaving soon, so she naturally wants to talk to her classmates individually.”
“Why individually? They could talk together; it’s not like Dingdang and Chen Xiaowu.”
“Come, I’ll go with you to find them. Remember, it’s enough that Weixiao likes you.” Seeing Liu Dazhi’s anxious expression, Hao Huigui wanted to laugh.
Hao Huigui and Liu Dazhi walked to the back mountain and saw Chen Tong and Weixiao walking back. Seeing Teacher Hao and Liu Dazhi, Chen Tong looked a little uneasy. Weixiao, however, said very naturally, “There’s a large waterfall at the back mountain; it’s all frozen. Teacher Hao, let’s take a photo there later.”
“Okay.”
Liu Dazhi looked at Chen Tong, who immediately turned his head to the left, clearly avoiding eye contact. He then looked at Weixiao, but couldn’t read her expression. After dinner, everyone went back to their rooms to rest. Hao Huigui wanted to take everyone to release sky lanterns, but he saw Liu Dazhi writing something. He walked over; Liu Dazhi was answering the third question in his diary: “What do you want to say to your closest friends now?”
Liu Dazhi wrote: “I want to tell them that no matter how much time passes, I hope we don’t change. We can all become the people we want to be, and we don’t become the people we hate.” Liu Dazhi looked back at Hao Huigui, smiled, and said, “Teacher Hao, I think you’re right. I hope we all get better, become the people we want to be, and not the people we hate.”
“Mm.” Hao Huigui nodded. He knew, barring any unforeseen circumstances, he’d be leaving soon. But at this moment, he felt incredibly peaceful. Looking at Liu Dazhi, Weixiao, Chen Tong, Chen Xiaowu, and Dingdang, he felt incredibly relieved. Over the past half-year, everyone had changed, and everyone had become better. They’d all learned to face their true selves and bravely pursue their desired lives; what could be more reassuring than this?
“Come, let’s release sky lanterns.” Hao Huigui took out six sky lanterns, teaching everyone how to assemble them on the wide snowy ground, letting them write down their wishes. Everyone pondered what to write—important wishes, wishes that must come true… So they decided to write down their ideals from that night. Hao Huigui returned to his room, took out Liu Dazhi’s diary, took a deep breath, then flipped to the back.
He saw the phone number, the same one he’d seen in the taxi.
He used the room’s phone to call.
“Hello, can you hear me?”
“Are you Hao Huigui?”
“Yes.”
“Do you have any regrets about your 17-year-old self?” the other end asked. Regrets? There were many, but he’d understood more. His life’s failures had nothing to do with his 17-year-old self. If he returned to 36, he’d have so much to do. This trip, he’d understood: Changing your life isn’t about changing at a specific moment, but changing from this moment.
“No.”
“Goodbye.” The call ended. Hao Huigui gently put down the phone and walked out of the room. Everyone had finished writing; Hao Huigui lit each person’s sky lantern, then his own.
His sky lantern only had two words: Thank you.
In a snow-white deep mountain, six lanterns slowly ascended. The light illuminated the five teenagers’ faces; in their lives, perhaps they’d never find a more beautiful scene than this.
“Teacher Hao! Let’s come again next time!” Liu Dazhi turned and said to Hao Huigui.
Hao Huigui smiled and nodded.
At 3 AM, everyone was asleep. Hao Huigui sat at his desk, preparing his final farewells. Little Tigers’ “Love” played on his earphones; the music was cheerful, yet made Hao Huigui feel incredibly sad. Hao Huigui wrote letters to everyone, repeatedly checking, afraid of missing anything. He didn’t dare doze off, afraid that if he did, he’d never see them again. After washing his face several times, he revised the wording of his letters again and again. The most crucial part was that he couldn’t write about his destination; he’d originally planned to lie, but he couldn’t lie for a lifetime. Things that were impossible to happen again shouldn’t leave any lingering thoughts. After finishing the letters, Hao Huigui stared silently for a long time, tears welling up, but he held them back.
The sky gradually brightened; someone from the next room got up to use the restroom, and the sound of running water echoed. This sound broke through Hao Huigui’s composure; tears flowed freely, unrestrained. This wasn’t crying; perhaps he was using these tears to wash away the traces of his presence, perhaps he was using these tears to brew a cup of tea for his memories.
“My name is Hao Huigui,
one day, we’ll meet again.”
“Wake up! Teacher Hao!” Normally, Hao Huigui would wake everyone up, but today, he wasn’t there. After calling several times, there was no response. Liu Dazhi peered through the crack in the wooden door; it wasn’t locked. Liu Dazhi almost fell.
The room was empty; a note lay on the desk.
“Huh, where’s Teacher Hao? Did he leave already?” Liu Dazhi looked at the note.
“Something urgent came up; I took an early morning train back. After arriving in Hunan, go to my dorm; I have some things for you—Hao Huigui.”
On the way back to Hunan, everyone chatted and laughed. Only Liu Dazhi felt something was wrong.
Getting off the train, Liu Dazhi led the way to Hao Huigui’s dorm; the others followed.
Pushing open the door, they saw five letters on the desk, one for each of them.
Xiaowu:
You’ll see this letter after I’ve left. Because of various reasons, I can’t stay in Hunan any longer. Actually, I never expected to become your teacher; it was a twist of fate that we spent half a year together. Saying goodbye this way is unavoidable; I’d considered saying goodbye in person, but any method would make us sadder. But please believe me, we’ll meet again. Xiaowu, you’re the first among us to enter society; you’re diligent, hardworking, and kind; you’ll definitely achieve your desired life. You’ll also find happiness with the person you like. The four of you, I entrust you to Dazhi; please offer them advice whenever they need help…
Dingdang:
Remember what we said at the night market? Everyone will find their happiness, everyone will meet the right person. I’m happy you’ve changed your perspective and are willing to accept and understand a new person. I don’t approve of early romance, but Xiaowu is reliable; you can continue observing him until he can truly impress you and your family. Don’t give up; I believe Chen Xiaowu will succeed…
Chen Tong:
You’re so excellent and confident. You can decide your future through your own choices. Yesterday, you confided in Weixiao; this might cause you pressure, and you might tell the person involved one day. I want to tell you: Don’t put too much pressure on yourself; if you want, you can tell Liu Dazhi, Chen Xiaowu, or Dingdang immediately. Don’t worry about others not understanding; you’re true friends; true friends won’t treat secrets as secrets; they’ll treat them as part of life. I hope you live the life you want. Thank you for appreciating Dazhi.
Weixiao:
You’re doing great now, and you’ll do great in the future; don’t put too much pressure on yourself. You’ll find many happy and fulfilling things around you. (For example, Liu Dazhi is a good boy; he’ll be very successful in the future; I hope you two can still be together then.) We’ll meet again.
Dazhi:
You’re very much like my 17-year-old self; I believe you’ll become my 36-year-old self, and even surpass me. I hope you maintain your current enthusiasm, kindness, and ambition; I hope you become the person you want to be. One day, we’ll meet again. There’s a box under the bed; it’s a gift for you. I hope you like it. Remember, no matter what difficulties you face, remember, I’ll always be waiting for you in the future, embracing you at every crossroads.
Liu Dazhi bent down, took out the box, and opened it. Inside were two clothes: one Nike, one Puma. Liu Dazhi held the two clothes, looking around the dorm, at his friends holding their letters, blurting out, “No, I have to find Teacher Hao!”
“Liu Dazhi, I’m Hao Huigui,
I’ll be fine, I hope you are too.”
Hao Huigui opened his eyes; the taxi was exiting the tunnel; the road ahead was bright, and the driver was looking for directions. He reached into his pocket and took out his phone; the screen showed: June 24, 2017, 8 AM—the day after Yaya’s 100-day banquet. Had he been dreaming? Hao Huigui leaned back, looking out the window; the familiar game arcade was on the street corner. He was certain he hadn’t been dreaming. He looked at his phone; the signal was full. Had he really returned?
Hao Huigui called Weixiao.
“Hello, Weixiao, where are you?”
“On my way to the airport.”
“Um, I want to ask, why are you wearing a ring?”
“Oh, because people kept asking if I was married or had a boyfriend, so I just bought a ring to avoid trouble.”
She’d avoided a lot of trouble, almost avoiding himself.
“Hello, Huigui, can you still hear me?”
“Weixiao… wait for me at the airport; I’ll bring you a ring.”
“Ah?”
“Yes, I’ll bring you a ring; I’ll give it to you.” Hao Huigui said firmly.
“Okay… I’ll start timing; I have five hours until I leave.”
“Wait for me!” Hao Huigui immediately hung up and called Chen Tong, “Hello, can you quickly buy me a diamond ring? Don’t ask why; then come to the Hunan Expressway rest area to pick me up; we’ll go to the airport together. Oh, and bring Xiaowu and Dingdang! It’s essential; you must come; you have to witness a major event!”
In the car heading to the airport, Hao Huigui sat in the passenger seat, constantly urging Chen Tong to drive faster.
“Brother, what’s wrong with you? Yesterday, you had a terrible attitude; today, you’re completely different!” Dingdang asked.
Hao Huigui looked at Dingdang. This girl had believed in Chen Xiaowu since he was penniless, and it was her unwavering belief that fueled his drive to improve. She wasn’t just a housewife, and Chen Xiaowu wasn’t just a nouveau riche; they were ordinary people who had reaped the rewards of their hard work.
“Dingdang, you’re actually much smarter than me,” Hao Huigui suddenly said.
“Duh, if I were dumber than you, would I be able to get married?”
“Chen Xiaowu, I’m sorry about yesterday,” Hao Huigui smiled, then turned to Chen Xiaowu.
“Ah? Dazhi, Huigui, it was my fault. We’re such good friends; how could I talk to you like that?”
Hao Huigui suddenly remembered something and asked, “Chen Tong, what do you do now?”
“Me? I work at the Industrial and Commercial Bureau!” Chen Tong glanced at Hao Huigui. Dingdang was right; Hao Huigui had completely changed. Oh… Hao Huigui felt a little regret; it turned out everything he’d experienced was in another world. In that world, he’d protected Chen Tong, but it hadn’t affected this world. Thinking about this, Hao Huigui chuckled self-deprecatingly. At first, he’d hoped to change them in 1998 through his efforts, but in the end, he’d been changed by his 17-year-old self. But it was pretty good, wasn’t it?
At the airport, Hao Huigui planned to give Weixiao the ring immediately.
“Wait! Change into something more formal.” Chen Tong opened the trunk, revealing a suit and shirt he’d prepared for Hao Huigui. Hao Huigui grabbed the clothes and rushed into the restroom, changing quickly and preparing to leave. He suddenly noticed something in the mirror; he leaned closer, lifting his hair, discovering a stitched scar on his forehead.
This… was this from the time he’d protected Chen Tong? Hao Huigui was puzzled. Wasn’t everything supposed to remain unchanged? Wasn’t Chen Tong still a deputy director at the Industrial and Commercial Bureau?
“Why haven’t you left yet?” Chen Tong came to find Hao Huigui.
“Chen Tong, where did you go to university?”
“Huigui, are you losing your mind because you’re about to confess? I got into Peking University after scoring first in Hunan’s college entrance exam!” Chen Tong said slightly smugly.
“So… it was real!”
This book is dedicated to our unwavering youth.
Afterword
I wonder what your feelings are after reading this. Right now, I feel reluctant to let go.
For almost a year, the characters in this novel have been constantly conversing in my mind. I know their tone, and I can see their expressions. They’re like my closest friends, opening their hearts to me, confiding their most private matters, letting me see the truest versions of themselves.
Am I Hao Huigui? I hope I am. I envy his ability to interact with his younger self. Looking back on my life, those regrets, my feelings are exactly the same as Hao Huigui’s—regret and remorse, countless nights filled with the longing, “If only I could do it all over again.” In Hao Huigui’s world, I relived some things and let go of some regrets.
I remember an afternoon many years ago, when my parents told me about my grandfather’s passing; I cried uncontrollably in Beijing. So Hao Huigui helped me say goodbye to my grandfather. I remember I disliked my mother singing karaoke; now that she’s stopped, I realize what I’ve missed. Similarly, when I watched Liu Dazhi speak and act so unrestrainedly, I felt envious. Although some things seem childish now, it doesn’t mean I was stupid then; it just proves I’m more concerned about others’ opinions now.
The editor wants to know what Hao Huigui changed and whether Liu Dazhi really went to see Hao Huigui. Actually, we all want to know what happens next. I told myself I must continue writing this story; they’re all still alive.
Finally, on behalf of Hao Huigui, Liu Dazhi, Weixiao, Chen Tong, Dingdang, and Chen Xiaowu, thank you for spending so much time reading their lives.
We will meet again.
Liu Tong
