- Chapter 15 - "I think I need to report this to the police first."
After walking out of the brand-new school building, Guan Xiaoxuan stood under the sun for a while, letting the strange, cold feeling gradually fade away.
She glanced back at Zhang Wen and saw the girl still deep in thought, looking very serious.
Even though Guan Xiaoxuan was no longer the same person she used to be, she still didn’t want to see Zhang Wen end up dead for no reason. Such a young girl—she shouldn’t have to die on campus.
“What are you thinking about?” Guan Xiaoxuan looked at Zhang Wen and asked, “Don’t tell me you want to join them tonight to catch that faceless girl?”
Zhang Wen quickly shook her head. “No, no, I don’t! I’m just a little worried about the people staying behind. You said they’re going to act tonight… what if something bad happens?”
“If nothing goes wrong, something probably will,” Guan Xiaoxuan said. “So don’t go with them. Got it?”
Zhang Wen nodded seriously. “I get it, I get it. If you don’t mess around, you won’t die. But I’m still really curious—what kind of special item would that faceless girl drop?”
“No idea.” Guan Xiaoxuan shook her head and told her, “I won’t be with you this afternoon. No matter what happens tonight, don’t get involved with them. Just stay in the dorm, okay?”
Once she saw Zhang Wen agree, she waved goodbye and left.
Guan Xiaoxuan walked around the garden and headed toward the school gate. In her heart, she still felt the others’ plan was too reckless. How could they just casually gather a group of people to deal with something so obviously dangerous?
That’s basically walking straight into death.
After leaving campus, Guan Xiaoxuan pulled out her phone and dialed the emergency number even little kids could recite.
The dispatcher answered in a gentle voice, asking what kind of help she needed. Guan Xiaoxuan responded seriously, carefully explaining everything that had just happened.
“They’re currently discussing how to act tonight, so I thought I should report it first.”
After she finished speaking, the dispatcher paused for a moment. About two seconds later, they replied in a serious tone, “We understand the situation. We’ll assign a department to handle this. Please don’t hang up…”
The fact that the dispatcher didn’t immediately accuse her of making a false report already confirmed she had done the right thing.
Departments like Xing Tianqing’s Special Incident Bureau also worked closely with the police.
While waiting quietly, Guan Xiaoxuan thought to herself—it really is better to let the professionals handle this kind of thing.
Soon, another operator was brought onto the call and asked Guan Xiaoxuan to wait by the school gate. Someone would be there shortly to take over.
Fifteen minutes after the call ended, a police car pulled up at the entrance. Two uniformed officers got out, glanced at Guan Xiaoxuan, and asked, “Did you make the report about people gathering on campus to catch a ghost?”
Their tone wasn’t loud, but by now quite a few people nearby had noticed and were curiously looking over.
Guan Xiaoxuan nodded. The officers said, “Get in the car. We’ll talk there.”
Once she and the officers were inside, the driver started the car and drove back into the school.
The police car quietly made a loop around campus before stopping under the shade of a tree. Not far away was the same newly built school building Guan Xiaoxuan had just left.
“Is it that building?” the officer in the passenger seat asked in a low voice. “Are they still inside?”
“That’s the one, but I don’t know if they’ve left already,” Guan Xiaoxuan said. “It’s been about half an hour since I called, so they might be gone. I can’t be sure.”
The two officers exchanged a look, then turned to her. “Miss, have you told anyone else about this?”
Guan Xiaoxuan replied seriously, “I called the police as soon as I left. I haven’t told anyone else.”
She could tell they were worried she might leak the information, so she reassured them. “I’ve dealt with this kind of thing before. The one handling the case was Captain Xing from the Special Incident Bureau. I signed a confidentiality agreement. I won’t talk about it.”
Hearing this, the officers clearly relaxed, though they still kept a serious expression. “You handled it very well. From here on, leave it to us. You should leave now, and remember—don’t tell anyone else about this.”
“Okay.” Guan Xiaoxuan agreed obediently, though she looked a little curious and asked, “Can I ask how long it’ll take to resolve this?”
“We’ve understood the situation. If what you said is accurate, it should be resolved tonight.”
They looked at her again, finding it impressive that someone so young could stay this calm. It was rare, so they ended up chatting with her a bit more.
Tonight? That fast? The Special Incident Bureau really worked efficiently.
Guan Xiaoxuan remembered how she woke up in the morgue, and within six hours someone had already tracked her to her door. Even catching that Red Lady hadn’t taken more than 24 hours. Clearly, Xing Tianqing and her people moved fast.
But that made sense. Cases involving supernatural elements could easily stir up panic if dragged out. They had to act quickly.
Getting out of the police car, Guan Xiaoxuan left the school. She trusted the official departments—they’d handle this properly.
She got on a bus and headed to the lakeside where the original owner of her body had drowned.
Because it wasn’t the weekend, the lake wasn’t crowded. Just a few people strolled along the shore, and none were standing as close to the water as Guan Xiaoxuan was.
The lake shimmered in the sunlight. Guan Xiaoxuan stood on a large stone worn smooth by the water, squatted down, and scooped up a handful of the cold lake water.
It was April, and the water was still freezing.
Guan Xiaoxuan could still remember the feeling of the original owner walking step by step into the center of the lake—her whole body turning ice cold, like being stabbed by thousands of needles.
That memory was terrifying. Just thinking about it gave Guan Xiaoxuan chills down her back.
She wondered if walking into the lake slowly, just like before, might send her back to her own world.
But she held herself back. A few people on the shore had already started watching her, probably worried she was about to jump in.
Better wait. Now wasn’t the right time to try.
Guan Xiaoxuan stood up, shook the water off her hand, and looked out over the lake. She made a mental note of the spot the original had walked into. When the time was right, she’d come back and try again.
