- Chapter 59 - The Woman in Red at the Bus Stop
The glass bead was placed inside Guan Xiaoxuan’s inner pocket. As long as she carried it with her, she could directly grab objects around her weighing no more than 5 kilograms.
Actually, Guan Xiaoxuan was taking a gamble.
She was betting on whether she would be killed first by the Split-Mouth Man, or if the Woman in Red would kill the Split-Mouth Man first, then turn around and kill her.
Although both outcomes meant death, Guan Xiaoxuan didn’t want to die so easily.
To put it simply, even if she had to die, she was determined to take someone down with her!
She stretched out her arm, and when Guan Xiaoxuan looked down again, she was already holding a pair of red high heels in her arms.
The No. bus 444 didn’t stop at the bus station. It sped through the city as if nothing could make it stop.
The man naturally saw the red high heels suddenly appear in Guan Xiaoxuan’s hands but hadn’t realized the danger yet. He just looked at her, puzzled, murmuring, “You have a special item on you…?”
Before he could finish, both Guan Xiaoxuan and the man suddenly felt the temperature around them drop sharply.
Guan Xiaoxuan felt like she had been thrown into a deep freezer. The cold was terrifying. Even wearing two layers of jackets, it felt like she was wearing nothing. Her scalp went numb from the chill.
The man seemed to realize what was happening. Looking at the red high heels in Guan Xiaoxuan’s hands, he shouted angrily, “You actually provoked that woman!”
Without another word, the man rushed forward and opened his huge mouth wide, as if he wanted to swallow Guan Xiaoxuan whole!
Just then, an almost maddening cold wave swept through the bus. A layer of frost covered the whole cabin.
The speeding bus suddenly froze in place on the road. The man’s whole body was frozen, his mouth wide open but unable to close, and his eyes showed a trace of nervousness.
Guan Xiaoxuan glanced at Chen Man on the floor and saw a thin layer of frost starting to form on her body too, which had luckily stopped her bleeding.
With a series of cracking sounds, Guan Xiaoxuan saw the Woman in Red.
The woman had appeared on the bus without anyone noticing. She stood next to the driver, water dripping from her entire body, forming a small puddle on the white frost.
The man saw the Woman in Red too. He shivered slightly and then shook off the frozen layer of cold covering his body.
“I’m going to eat you!”
The man hated Guan Xiaoxuan for acting on her own. If he could eat this “Gu” (the mysterious curse/spirit) that she carried, his strength would grow tremendously. Even if he couldn’t defeat the woman behind him, at least he could escape!
Though escaping would bring big trouble later, the man didn’t care.
The woman in front of him was just a weak human. How dare she provoke this Woman in Red? If she was so eager to die, then she would be his next meal!
The man was about to swallow Guan Xiaoxuan’s head. She even saw down his throat. But suddenly, a force pulled him away from her eyes.
The Woman in Red’s hair, like seaweed, tightly wrapped around the man. Her strength was immense. Guan Xiaoxuan even heard bones breaking as they struggled!
Guan Xiaoxuan collapsed to the ground, quickly ran to Chen Man’s side, and tested her nose for breath.
Chen Man was still breathing, but her body temperature was very low!
Guan Xiaoxuan found Chen Man’s severed hand under the bus seat, then hurried back to clear the ice and bl00d from the wound—otherwise, if the tissue died before getting to the hospital, Chen Man’s life would be over.
While treating Chen Man’s injury, Guan Xiaoxuan kept an eye on the Woman in Red.
Honestly, Guan Xiaoxuan had encountered many strange creatures, but they usually fought humans. This was the first time she saw one strange creature fight another.
The Woman in Red mainly used her hair and the frost created by the sudden temperature drop. The man relied on teleporting to dodge and attack.
Guan Xiaoxuan guessed the man’s power was related to time and space—maybe he had quick or instant movement ability.
But the man was really weak, no match for the Woman in Red. When Guan Xiaoxuan looked up at their fight, she saw the man had already lost a leg.
That leg was frozen to the ground, probably torn off while teleporting.
The woman’s wet hair floated all around like a giant net, leaving the man nowhere to hide.
Seeing the woman clearly winning, Guan Xiaoxuan wasted no time. She lifted Chen Man, trying to escape through the broken hole in the bus.
But before she could carry her away, the Woman in Red had already finished the fight.
The man was frozen solid like an ice popsicle. Without mercy, the Woman in Red swallowed him whole.
Guan Xiaoxuan was stunned.
So that’s how it ends when strange creatures fight—one eats the other!
After eating the man, the woman finally looked at Guan Xiaoxuan with satisfaction.
Guan Xiaoxuan felt a chilling cold all over her body. She backed away with Chen Man, retreating to the deepest part of the back row. The woman stood in the only aisle, staring heavily at her.
“Th-thank you for saving us.” Guan Xiaoxuan was sweating cold but forced herself to speak. “We’re grateful. Tell me which cemetery you’re at, and we’ll burn paper offerings for you when we get back!”
As the woman slowly stepped closer, Guan Xiaoxuan felt the cold grow heavier. Looking at the woman in front of her, she felt her bl00d freeze, afraid to even breathe hard.
The woman just stared at Guan Xiaoxuan, water dripping from her body. Then she gave a strange smile.
That smile made Guan Xiaoxuan’s hair stand on end. The woman’s wet hair, like seaweed, slowly wrapped around Guan Xiaoxuan. She tightly closed her eyes.
She never expected that her very first mission after officially joining the Strange Creature Bureau would end like this—with such a heroic sacrifice!
Although Guan Xiaoxuan really valued her life and was afraid of these things, now that she was close to death, she didn’t regret provoking the woman in front of her.
Better to die at this woman’s hands than be killed by that man. At least they were “acquaintances”—no outsiders getting in the way!
Just as Guan Xiaoxuan was preparing to accept her fate, she heard a very familiar voice.
“Prohibition Rule Seventeen.”
“No aquatic spirits allowed here.”
“Prohibition Rule Eighteen.”
“No harming public officials allowed here.”
As Xing Tianqing’s voice echoed, Guan Xiaoxuan saw the woman in red stiffen all over, frown, and turn her head to look at the woman who had just walked in through the bus door.
Xing Tianqing wore her black trench coat, holding an ancient-looking golden book in her hands.
She had taken off her glasses, and now her golden vertical pupils stared intently at the woman in red sitting in the back of the bus. Behind her, familiar faces swarmed inside.
Guan Xiaoxuan immediately relaxed but still kept a careful eye on the woman in red without showing any sign of movement.
Xing Tianqing stood firmly on the bus, the golden book in her hands shining against her golden eyes.
The bus was eerily quiet, with nothing but the sound of everyone’s breathing.
The woman seemed to realize she was in trouble. She withdrew her gaze and looked at Guan Xiaoxuan, who was just a few feet away, with a terrifying smile.
The next second, the woman vanished right before everyone’s eyes.
Song Yan half-kneeling on the ground, one hand holding his gun and the other touching the bus floor, spoke after three seconds, “Captain Xing, the spirit has left.”
Only then did Guan Xiaoxuan breathe a sigh of relief. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed to the ground alongside Chen Man.
Everyone rushed over to help, giving first aid and sending Chen Man to the hospital.
Guan Xiaoxuan wasn’t seriously hurt. After helping carry the unconscious Chen Man onto the ambulance, she finally let out a long breath.
Xing Tianqing, as the person in charge, was still on the bus conducting an investigation.
Strangely, the bus was still there, but the driver and other passengers had all disappeared, leaving only an almost abandoned empty shell.
Xing Tianqing sent people to inspect it for a long time, and after confirming it was no longer dangerous, she ordered it to be properly dealt with. Then she glanced at Guan Xiaoxuan sitting by the roadside and walked over.
“Are you okay?” Xing Tianqing stood in front of her, looking down and asking, “Do you want me to take you to the hospital for a check-up?”
Guan Xiaoxuan shook her head. She looked toward the east, where the sky was already brightening with the pale light of dawn. She brushed the stray hair from her forehead and said, “The sky’s already light…”
Xing Tianqing looked eastward too and softly replied, then sat down beside Guan Xiaoxuan on the roadside.
“Thanks for your hard work today,” Xing Tianqing said, looking at her. “There were some things we didn’t fully consider that put you in danger. I’ll write a report about this and give you a proper explanation.”
But Guan Xiaoxuan smiled and shook her head. Turning to Xing Tianqing, she said, “You don’t have to say such official things to me. I know there are always unexpected things during missions, but at least the ending was good—we saved the victims, Qiu Nan only got lightly hurt, and I’m fine. That’s the best outcome.”
Xing Tianqing’s golden pupils hadn’t yet returned to normal. She took a pair of glasses from her pocket and put them on, slightly hiding those strange eyes.
Guan Xiaoxuan watched her actions closely, her gaze falling on Xing Tianqing’s eyes as their eyes met.
The cool morning breeze blew gently through the gap between them, lifting Guan Xiaoxuan’s stray hair.
The pale dawn light started to brighten the sky. Guan Xiaoxuan stared at the woman in front of her and stayed silent for a long time before asking, “Am I going to die?”
Xing Tianqing didn’t say anything.
Guan Xiaoxuan covered her eyes and gave an awkward laugh. “I know my time is running out. Maybe today, maybe tomorrow, I’ll disappear.”
“You won’t.” Xing Tianqing frowned and looked at Guan Xiaoxuan, pulling down her hand to reveal her eyes. “There has to be a way. We’ll protect you. You won’t just disappear like that!”
Guan Xiaoxuan looked up at her with red eyes and gave a bitter smile. “No one can escape that woman’s pursuit. Didn’t you say it yourself? That woman is a headache even for your bureau. How am I supposed to get away…”
