- Chapter 6 - Summoning the Soul?!
Guan Xiaoxuan kept a good attitude of “if there’s a problem, find the police; if you find something wrong, report it,” and cooperated fully with Xing Tianqing and the others.
The Special Incident Investigation Bureau was an official department after all. Since Xing Tianqing had promised to protect Guan Xiaoxuan, she naturally kept her word.
But before anything else, Xing Tianqing took Guan Xiaoxuan to the basement level of Third People’s Hospital — the very morgue where Guan Xiaoxuan had escaped from.
“The morgue at Third Hospital isn’t open to the public anymore. I’m bringing you here mainly so you can see the crime scene and maybe something will trigger your memory,” Xing Tianqing said as they walked down the cold, empty hospital corridor.
Guan Xiaoxuan noticed the hospital felt much emptier than before. When she escaped that night, it was late, but there were still quite a few people inside the hospital. Now in broad daylight, there were only a few medical staff around.
“Where did everyone go?” Guan Xiaoxuan asked the black-coated agents nearby.
Xiao An smiled and explained, “Because of the morgue incident, the hospital has temporarily shut down this entire building. Plus, with our control, you naturally won’t see many people.”
Guan Xiaoxuan nodded, impressed by the strength and authority of this special department, which worked closely with the police. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have been able to lock down the entire hospital building so quickly.
From what Guan Xiaoxuan learned at the police station, the Special Incident Investigation Bureau’s mark was their black trench coats — made from some unknown material that looked very tough. She wondered if a knife could even cut through them.
Besides that, this bureau had another name: the “Weird Bureau.” As the name suggests, they handled cases the regular police couldn’t deal with. Like this case of the living corpses — it was handed straight to the bureau without going through the local police.
In other words, they were basically the “official big boss.”
Guan Xiaoxuan secretly felt relieved. No matter what, she now had protection and could feel safe — at least for the time being. And she believed that wherever you go, official organizations usually gathered the most power.
This meant she didn’t need to worry about the “Red Girl” or that mysterious interest group — at least not for now.
Xing Tianqing took Guan Xiaoxuan into the elevator and went down to the basement.
Returning to this place wasn’t a good feeling, especially since it was the morgue. Seeing the double aluminum doors made Guan Xiaoxuan’s face darken.
“What’s wrong?” Xing Tianqing glanced at her with light-colored eyes and asked, “Do you feel anything?”
“Yes.” Guan Xiaoxuan said with a pale face, “Seeing that door makes me want to vomit.”
Xiao An couldn’t hold back a chuckle and smiled cheerfully at her. “Little sister, I didn’t expect you to be so funny.”
Little sister?
Guan Xiaoxuan gave Xiao An a look. She thought to herself that in her past life, she was way older than this guy. Controlling her expression, she looked back at the door and asked, “You’re not going to go inside, are you?”
“Don’t worry.”
Xing Tianqing pulled out a pair of black plastic gloves and put them on, telling Guan Xiaoxuan, “The scene hasn’t been disturbed much. It should be enough for you to remember a lot.”
Guan Xiaoxuan was caught off guard. She had expected her to say, “Don’t worry, it’s been cleaned up, no need to be afraid.” Instead, Xing Tianqing said, “Don’t worry, nothing has been touched, we’re waiting for you.”
Watching a staff member open the door, Guan Xiaoxuan braced herself and looked into the morgue.
Inside, dozens of corpses were piled up strangely by the door. Their bodies were covered in white powder, eyes and mouths wide open, clawing and snarling like they wanted to break through the door and catch the Guan Xiaoxuan who had escaped.
Suddenly, memories from last night came flooding back, making the back of her head tingle.
If she hadn’t run fast last night, she would have died at the hands of those corpses.
Besides Guan Xiaoxuan, the others also looked a bit unsettled — even the strongest of minds would be shaken by such a horrifying sight.
Guan Xiaoxuan held back her nausea and glanced at Xing Tianqing. To her surprise, the woman was staring right back at her.
Xing Tianqing’s light eyes seemed to ripple like waves. She calmly watched Guan Xiaoxuan from the moment the door opened, reading every expression on her face.
Guan Xiaoxuan’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly looked away, then thought better of it and looked again.
Their eyes met. The ripples in Xing Tianqing’s pupils disappeared, and she smiled gently. “Miss Guan, did you remember anything?”
Remember? She wanted to say she was almost scared to death.
Guan Xiaoxuan shook her head sincerely. “Nothing except what happened in the morgue the night I woke up.”
“Is that so?” Xing Tianqing withdrew her gaze and looked at the corpses clawing at the door. “Those who died with you should be connected to you somehow. If you can’t sense it, maybe the memories are buried deep inside.”
“Buried deep inside?” Guan Xiaoxuan frowned.
Xing Tianqing nodded and didn’t go through the door. Instead, she said to someone nearby, “Bring a chair and ask the spirit medium to come.”
Spirit medium?
Just hearing the name made Guan Xiaoxuan uneasy. When she saw a middle-aged woman approaching, she knew it couldn’t be good.
The spirit medium was a woman in her forties. She looked plain and thin, dressed simply like any ordinary passerby. But she gave off a quiet, lonely feeling. When her black eyes settled on Guan Xiaoxuan, the girl vaguely heard some faint sounds.
Those sounds were very faint and disappeared in an instant, making Guan Xiaoxuan wonder if she’d imagined it.
“Spirit medium,” Xing Tianqing said politely, nodding at the woman and pointing to Guan Xiaoxuan. “This is the girl who ran out of the morgue. Please summon her soul.”
Summon her soul?!
Cold sweat broke out all over Guan Xiaoxuan. How could she summon her soul in her current state? If they really did summon it, would it be her soul or some other Guan Xiaoxuan?
What if two Guan Xiaoxuan appeared at once? That would be so awkward!
And if she fought with the “other Guan Xiaoxuan,” who would step in to break it up?
While Guan Xiaoxuan was lost in these thoughts, the spirit medium stepped up and gently placed her hand on Guan Xiaoxuan’s shoulder. In a soft, feather-light voice, she said, “Don’t be afraid, child.”
As soon as she spoke, Guan Xiaoxuan felt her eyelids grow heavy. The spirit medium’s voice became distant and hazy, as if she was speaking from far away.
“You must be very tired now. No rush. Sit down and think carefully.” The woman’s voice said, “I will summon your soul so you can remember your deepest memories.”
Guan Xiaoxuan sat down, relaxed her body, and drifted into a white mist.
“…Xiaoxuan?”
With a sudden pop, like a bubble bursting, Guan Xiaoxuan snapped back to reality. She looked around in a panic, trying to understand where she was.
“Are you okay?” A girl holding Guan Xiaoxuan’s arm asked worriedly. “You’ve looked pale since just now. What’s wrong?”
Guan Xiaoxuan looked at the girl. She had neat short hair with bangs and bright eyes. They were walking together on the street.
The girl looked at Guan Xiaoxuan and asked, “What do you think about that interest group?”
Interest group?
What interest group?
Guan Xiaoxuan suddenly recalled that during the spirit medium’s summoning, she was told to find her deepest memory.
She looked at the girl and asked in a daze, “What’s today’s date?”
“It’s the 11th,” the girl said, pulling out her phone and showing the lock screen that read March 11 — the very day Guan Xiaoxuan first contacted that interest group!
This girl was probably the Zhang Wen mentioned in the diary.
Zhang Wen was delicate and young, with a girlish charm that made her look like a classmate of Guan Xiaoxuan.
“The senior said this interest group isn’t trustworthy,” Zhang Wen said nervously. “The so-called ‘Red Girl,’ and promises that wishes come true — it sounds like a horror movie. And the way they looked at you made me feel weird inside.”
Guan Xiaoxuan nodded seriously. “You’re right. I don’t trust them either.”
Zhang Wen relaxed and looked at Guan Xiaoxuan. “I thought you might actually agree with them, since you hesitated earlier in the room.”
Guan Xiaoxuan didn’t reply because she knew that the ‘other Guan Xiaoxuan’ with Zhang Wen had indeed agreed, which led to everything that happened next.
The two walked side by side, passing through the early spring banyan tree-lined street, with mottled shadows falling over them.
Guan Xiaoxuan looked around, trying to recognize the place. Suddenly, she saw a woman in a black coat walking toward them.
Xing Tianqing, wearing thin wire-rimmed glasses, brushed past Guan Xiaoxuan and whispered, “Find that interest group.”
