- Chapter 76 - "What’s Living in Your Shadow?! What Is That?!"
Guan Xiaoxuan didn’t know what Xing Tianqing had gone to do. She had planned to come back that night, talk to Xing Tianqing, thank her for taking care of her lately, and maybe arrange a day when they both had time to go out for hotpot.
But by the time it was past 11 PM, Xing Tianqing still hadn’t shown up. Calling her didn’t go through either. Guan Xiaoxuan managed to call Xiao An and the others instead. Xiao An said Xing Tianqing seemed to have gone to see Jin Cheng and told Guan Xiaoxuan not to worry. She even brought people along.
Though Jin Cheng talked mysteriously, often saying things Guan Xiaoxuan couldn’t quite understand, he was a good person, so she didn’t worry too much.
She was only worried that it would be a big problem if Xing Tianqing found out her secret.
Since Xing Tianqing wasn’t home and Guan Xiaoxuan had already dealt with her troubles, there was no reason to keep staying at someone else’s place. So that night, Guan Xiaoxuan moved back to her own home, washed up a little, and went to bed.
She slept very well. When she woke up feeling soft and relaxed, she opened her eyes and saw someone standing right by her bed.
At first, she thought it was Xing Tianqing and was about to speak, but something felt off.
Why was there a cold, damp feeling?
Guan Xiaoxuan suddenly shivered and sat up straight in bed.
When she saw who it was standing by her bed, cold sweat broke out.
It was Song Yi. A puddle of water had formed under her feet, showing she must have been standing there for a long time, silently watching Guan Xiaoxuan sleep.
Her back was pressed against the wall. Guan Xiaoxuan hugged her blanket tightly, her face pale. “W-why are you suddenly out here? You scared me!”
Even though Song Yi had now submitted to her, hiding in her shadow as her weapon, Guan Xiaoxuan couldn’t forget how violent she had been on the bus and at the Sixth Hospital. She felt this woman could claw her to death in an instant.
Song Yi was still dripping wet in her red dress, water falling drop by drop onto the floor, but at least her face wasn’t so scary anymore. Except for a bit of a deathly pale color, she was actually quite pretty.
But no matter how pretty, who stands by someone’s bedside early in the morning?
And judging by how she looked, she had been guarding Guan Xiaoxuan all night!
Thinking about how someone who once wanted to kill her had stood by her bed all night without her noticing gave Guan Xiaoxuan goosebumps.
[Good morning…]
Song Yi even raised her hand to greet Guan Xiaoxuan with a strange smile.
Guan Xiaoxuan: “…”
This whole scene was creepy no matter how you looked at it.
“You don’t need to greet me,” Guan Xiaoxuan said as she let go of the blanket. “Next time you come out, remember to tell me. Otherwise, you’ll scare me to death, okay?”
Song Yi looked at her, confused, opening her mouth as if to explain something, but her speech was unclear and she couldn’t get the words out.
Guan Xiaoxuan sighed helplessly and said, “I’m human, a person. You understand, right? Getting scared could kill me. You don’t want me to die, do you?”
Song Yi nodded obediently.
Seeing that this woman could actually communicate with her so calmly, Guan Xiaoxuan relaxed and sat down on the edge of the bed. She asked, “Did you come to see me this morning for something?”
At that, Song Yi moved closer, her cold, wet hands wrapping around Guan Xiaoxuan’s waist. Then she rested her head on Guan Xiaoxuan’s shoulder, curling herself into her arms.
Before Guan Xiaoxuan could figure out what she was doing, she suddenly felt a sharp pain on her right earlobe and gasped.
Song Yi bit down on Guan Xiaoxuan’s earlobe, then slowly let go. Acting obedient, she curled up in her arms and said, “Marking…”
Guan Xiaoxuan touched her bitten earlobe and asked curiously, “Is this your mark on me?”
Song Yi nodded and said, “You belong to me.”
Guan Xiaoxuan: “…”
She sighed deeply and said, “Alright, alright, I’m yours. But let’s not talk about that now. Can you please get off me? You’re soaking wet, and it’s uncomfortable holding you like this.”
Song Yi thought seriously for a moment and, probably realizing she was making Guan Xiaoxuan uncomfortable, reluctantly let go. She sat down on the floor by the bed, resting her head on Guan Xiaoxuan’s lap and looking up at her.
Gotta admit, Song Yi was terrifying when she was scary, but when she acted spoiled like this, she was kind of cute.
If only she weren’t a ghost.
Guan Xiaoxuan looked at her helplessly, ran her fingers through Song Yi’s wet hair, and asked, “Do you always have to be this wet? It feels really inconvenient.”
Song Yi let Guan Xiaoxuan touch her hair and said happily, “I like it.”
Whether she meant she liked Guan Xiaoxuan touching her hair, or just liked being wet like this, wasn’t clear.
Song Yi looked at Guan Xiaoxuan and suddenly said, “Yesterday… in a dream… someone looked for you…”
Guan Xiaoxuan was stunned. “Someone came looking for me in my dream?”
What surprised her even more was that Song Yi could control her dreams?
Song Yi nodded and said, “Surname Bai…”
“Bai?” Guan Xiaoxuan thought for a moment. The only one who could get into her dreams at night was probably Bai Zhiqi — that strange one. She hadn’t expected Song Yi to be able to block Bai Zhiqi from entering her dreams and even talk to her.
No wonder Song Yi was a textbook-level weird spirit — her powers were really strong.
Guan Xiaoxuan nodded, planning to visit Bai Zhiqi at school later. She told Song Yi, “That person is my friend. If she comes looking for me in my dreams, don’t stop her. She probably has something important to tell me.”
Song Yi gave a somewhat understanding nod. When the sun rose outside, she slipped back into Guan Xiaoxuan’s shadow.
Soaking wet from Song Yi, Guan Xiaoxuan got up and took a shower. When she looked in the mirror, she saw a small row of teeth marks on her right earlobe.
She rubbed it hard, even making her earlobe red, but the teeth marks didn’t fade. In the end, she gave up, thinking they would disappear on their own in a couple of hours.
Since she woke early, Guan Xiaoxuan tidied up the apartment. She hadn’t been home for several days, and there was a layer of dust on the floor. She mopped it clean, wiped the dust off the cabinets and tables, and by the time she finished, it was just past 7 a.m.
It was Friday. She planned to visit Bai Zhiqi at school first, see what she wanted to say, then rest well over the weekend before classes officially started Monday.
Before leaving, Guan Xiaoxuan stopped by Xing Tianqing’s house. It seemed she hadn’t come home all night yesterday, which worried Guan Xiaoxuan. She took out her phone and called her.
At that moment, Xing Tianqing was resting on the office sofa with her eyes closed. Hearing her phone ring, she grabbed it and saw it was Guan Xiaoxuan calling.
Little An, who was on duty last night, said Guan Xiaoxuan had called several times, but Xing Tianqing hadn’t answered, which must have worried her.
“Hello?” Xing Tianqing covered her eyes with the back of her hand, still lying on the sofa. “Why are you up so early today?”
“Mm, I went to bed early last night, so I woke up early.” Guan Xiaoxuan stood in the stairwell, holding the phone. “Where did you go yesterday? You didn’t come home last night, did you?”
“I had some things to take care of yesterday. Just got back not long ago.”
“Oh…”
Guan Xiaoxuan thought for a moment and said, “I’m going to school today. Tomorrow’s Saturday, so I’ll go to the office to return some stuff, okay?”
“Of course.” Xing Tianqing sounded a little tired, her eyelids heavy. “The Red-Clothed Weird Spirit issue is resolved. You can focus on classes now.”
“Okay.” Guan Xiaoxuan said, “You should get some rest too.”
After hanging up, Guan Xiaoxuan glanced at her shadow and pressed the elevator button.
Riding her bike to the school gate, she went straight to the girls’ dorm. Once she smoothly entered the inner world, she found Bai Zhiqi holed up in her dorm room.
Before Guan Xiaoxuan could say anything, Bai Zhiqi shouted, pointing at her, “Don’t come near me! Stay away!”
“Huh?” Guan Xiaoxuan stepped forward but quickly pulled back her foot cautiously. “I don’t have any Class A items on me anymore. Why are you still like this?”
“What does Class A items have to do with it? I’m talking about what’s living in your shadow! What is that? Why are you letting a weird spirit live inside your shadow?” Bai Zhiqi yelled, completely freaked out. “You’re terrifying!”
Guan Xiaoxuan: “…”
She didn’t know how to respond.
Hearing Bai Zhiqi shout, Song Yi stepped out from behind Guan Xiaoxuan. Her hair was wet like seaweed, and she was about to charge at Bai Zhiqi before Guan Xiaoxuan hurriedly stopped her.
“Don’t get worked up, don’t get worked up, we’re all friends here.” Guan Xiaoxuan gave a headache glance at Song Yi and explained, “Bai Zhiqi is my friend, and so are you. You two need to get along and not poke each other with your hair, okay?”
Song Yi stared blankly at Guan Xiaoxuan, blushing slightly as she murmured, “Friends…”
Bai Zhiqi looked at her and forced a smile. “Guan Xiaoxuan, how did you tame her? I always thought you were weak.”
Guan Xiaoxuan sighed helplessly, “I’m not strong now either.”
Seeing Song Yi wasn’t planning to hurt anyone else, Guan Xiaoxuan let go of her hand and turned to Bai Zhiqi. “Did you come into my dream last night?”
Bai Zhiqi nodded, still a bit shaken, and looked at Song Yi. “I did have something to tell you last night, but she stopped me, so I couldn’t see you.”
Guan Xiaoxuan was curious. “What was it?”
“Nothing big,” Bai Zhiqi said. “Just that a weird spirit was looking for you.”
Guan Xiaoxuan was stunned. “A weird spirit was looking for me?”
Bai Zhiqi nodded, glanced at Song Yi, and told Guan Xiaoxuan, “It was the driver of Bus Route 444. He was looking for you everywhere last night. I helped him leave a message for you. He originally wanted to talk to you in your dream, but your bodyguard stopped me.”
Hearing it was the bus driver looking for her, Guan Xiaoxuan was even more puzzled. Curiously, she asked, “What does he want from me?”
“He said he wants to thank you in person,” Bai Zhiqi said. “Tonight at midnight, he’ll be waiting for you at the abandoned bus stop by the north gate of your neighborhood. Remember to go find him.”
“Okay, got it.” Guan Xiaoxuan nodded and then looked at Bai Zhiqi. “By the way, last time I wanted you to check out my weapon. I brought it today. Take a look and tell me what you think.”
With that, Guan Xiaoxuan pulled out the Seven-Star Begonia from her bag.
