- Chapter 78 - The Black Coffin!
Song Yi heard the summons and stepped out from behind Guan Xiaoxuan.
The girl and the ghost stood together in the open space in front of the Sixth Hospital’s consultation building. Listening to the faint sounds coming from inside, Guan Xiaoxuan asked Song Yi, “Can you feel the weird energy in there?”
Song Yi nodded.
Guan Xiaoxuan said, “Since you’re my ‘weapon’ now, I should at least get to know you better. Tonight, let’s clear out this haunted place and see how strong you really are. How does that sound?”
At those words, Song Yi lifted her head, her eyes sparkling like little stars.
Why does this woman look so happy?
Guan Xiaoxuan felt puzzled but didn’t think too much and started leading Song Yi through the hospital to clear it out.
It turned out Song Yi was pretty powerful. She seemed to be trying hard to show off. When one or two small creepy spirits appeared, she went all out on them, like firing a cannon at ants. When one spirit tried to come over to claim credit after being defeated, it was already crushed beyond recognition.
Guan Xiaoxuan thought to herself, luckily Song Yi didn’t want to kill her now, or she probably wouldn’t have been able to escape.
But if Song Yi was that strong, then Jin Cheng—who could easily control Song Yi—must be even more powerful.
And from the looks of it, Jin Cheng hadn’t really done much himself at the time; it was that man who looked like a butler or assistant who took action.
Thinking about this, Guan Xiaoxuan turned to Song Yi walking beside her and said, “By the way, back at Boss Jin’s place, wasn’t that assistant-like man pretty strong?”
Song Yi nodded at the words and said, “I can’t beat him…”
After saying that, there was a hint of grievance in her tone.
Guan Xiaoxuan turned to look at her and continued, “Did you see Boss Jin take action? The man who looks like he’s in his forties, kind of handsome, the middle-aged guy?”
Song Yi thought for a moment, shook her head, but said, “He… is the strongest…”
Guan Xiaoxuan frowned when she heard that. It was just as she thought—Jin Cheng was currently the top-tier power here. His assistant was also very skilled and easily controlled Song Yi.
And Song Yi herself was quite powerful. After all, she was a textbook-level weird spirit. Against weaker enemies, she could take them out in one move.
When cleaning up these spirits, Guan Xiaoxuan could sometimes pick up items they dropped.
But these items didn’t seem very useful—probably because the spirits in this hospital were mindless ghosts, acting purely on instinct, so their dropped items weren’t much to look at.
Still, since these were special items, Guan Xiaoxuan planned to collect them and see if she could sell them on a forum or exchange them for points somewhere.
When Guan Xiaoxuan reached the seventh room on the third floor of the inpatient ward, almost all the new spirits in the hospital had been dealt with. She looked at the mural on the wall and took a photo with her phone.
The painting was the same as what she had seen before. In the corner of the mural were the words, “God is watching you,” which reminded Guan Xiaoxuan of when she went into the mist and Jin Cheng told her to “listen to the whispers of God.”
What exactly did “God” mean?
Was there something scary in that mist?
Was this mural connected to Jin Cheng somehow?
Guan Xiaoxuan couldn’t sort it out right away. But she had a feeling that the huge monster in the mural looked a little like the one she had felt when kneeling at the altar.
Could it be that the “God” in the mural was really the god from the mist?
As Guan Xiaoxuan was lost in thought, Song Yi started looking around, then gently tugged on Guan Xiaoxuan’s clothes.
“Hmm?” Guan Xiaoxuan looked up, curious. “What is it?”
“There’s something underground,” Song Yi said carefully.
“Something underground?” Guan Xiaoxuan looked down at the floor. “Do you mean in the basement?”
Song Yi shook her head. “The lowest part… underground…”
Something underground?
Guan Xiaoxuan frowned. She recalled that when she first arrived at Hospital Six, Xing Tianqing and the others had said this hospital was strange. Even after spirits were cleared, they kept reappearing, so someone had to come regularly to clean them out—a real hassle.
At first, Guan Xiaoxuan hadn’t thought much of it, but now it seemed odd.
Since Song Yi said there was something underground, maybe it had something to do with the spirits that kept showing up.
Guan Xiaoxuan immediately took Song Yi downstairs to the seventh room on the first floor.
This floor’s ward didn’t seem strange, but most of the equipment was gone, the walls were peeling, and the cement floor was dirty.
“Is this the place you meant?” Guan Xiaoxuan asked, walking to where they had just stood.
When Song Yi nodded, Guan Xiaoxuan crouched down and touched the floor.
The old inpatient ward had cement floors, easy to clean and fairly tidy. But over the years, only the floor was still intact—some parts had cracked.
Guan Xiaoxuan looked carefully but saw no problems, then stepped back a few steps and said, “Can you get the thing underground out?”
Song Yi nodded and motioned for Guan Xiaoxuan to step back to the door. Only then was she satisfied.
Suddenly, Song Yi’s long hair flared out. Her usually smooth, seaweed-like hair stiffened like hundreds of spears, then all shot towards the same spot with a loud bang!
Guan Xiaoxuan was startled. The dust that rose made her cough, and she quickly stepped outside into the yard.
After a few loud bangs, Guan Xiaoxuan worried the noise might disturb the neighbors, but after the sounds stopped, Song Yi took a long time before coming out.
“Well?” Guan Xiaoxuan asked. “Did you find anything?”
“A hole,” Song Yi said.
“A hole?”
Guan Xiaoxuan walked back and saw a big black hole where the floor had been flat before. She looked down but couldn’t see clearly inside—only heard water flowing.
Water?
Why was there water under the hospital? Had Song Yi blown up the hospital’s reservoir?
Song Yi stood next to Guan Xiaoxuan, staring at her and said, “Go down.”
Guan Xiaoxuan shook her head quickly. “Not yet. Let me check again. Since I hear water, I want to take a better look.”
Song Yi blinked and didn’t say anything, quietly waiting.
Guan Xiaoxuan took out her phone and used its flashlight to look down.
Because it wasn’t a professional outdoor torch, the light wasn’t very strong, but she could see a large round cement structure below the hospital. Water was flowing on both sides—maybe river water or tap water, with no strong smell. The water flowed swiftly.
In the middle of the cement was a black object.
Guan Xiaoxuan couldn’t tell what it was, but judging by Song Yi’s expression, it wasn’t dangerous. She said, “Let’s go down and have a look.”
Song Yi used her hair as a rope and helped Guan Xiaoxuan lower down to the round cement platform.
Once on the ground, Guan Xiaoxuan noticed there were crooked black marks on the cement. They all started from the black object in the middle, like traces flowing out, forming patterns that looked like writing.
Shining the light on the black object made her scalp tingle.
Up above, she couldn’t tell what it was, but now, standing close, Guan Xiaoxuan realized it was a black coffin—narrow on one end and wide on the other.
Why would anyone put a coffin here?
Guan Xiaoxuan frowned, feeling the atmosphere suddenly creepy. Luckily, Song Yi remained calm, which reassured her a bit.
“What is this?” Guan Xiaoxuan asked. “Can I open it?”
Song Yi looked at her, confused. “Don’t know…”
But then she added, “I can… help you… open it…”
Guan Xiaoxuan wasn’t sure about touching it herself, so she smiled and said, “Please, but don’t damage it. I just want to take a quick look.”
Song Yi nodded and stretched out her black hair, then forcefully opened the coffin.
As soon as it opened, a cold wind blew out. Guan Xiaoxuan expected something terrible inside, but nothing happened.
Song Yi frowned in confusion and said, “Empty…”
Empty?
Guan Xiaoxuan quickly leaned over to look—indeed, the black coffin was empty.
An empty black coffin buried under an abandoned psychiatric hospital?
It didn’t make sense. Who would put an empty coffin here for no reason?
But Guan Xiaoxuan could still feel a faint chill coming from the coffin itself. It seemed something was wrong with it. She didn’t dare touch it and asked Song Yi to close it again before leading her outside.
The big hole couldn’t be covered up easily. After thinking for a while, Guan Xiaoxuan took out her phone and called the Spirit Control Bureau.
When asked how she found it, she said it was already like this when she arrived, keeping herself clean from any trouble.
Song Yi returned to Guan Xiaoxuan’s shadow, and Guan Xiaoxuan sat in a clean spot to wait.
When she heard footsteps approaching, she saw Xing Tianqing and her colleagues arriving.
She quickly waved, “Captain Xing, over here!”
Xing Tianqing frowned when she saw her and hurried over. “Why are you out so late? Why not stay home?”
Guan Xiaoxuan didn’t know how to answer, paused for two seconds, then changed the subject. “Never mind me. Come see this. I heard a loud noise passing by and found a big hole with something inside.”
Xing Tianqing glared at her but realized the urgency. She stepped inside, saying, “What could be in this old hospital?”
But when the team saw the big hole in the room, each of them was stunned.
