- Chapter 92 - “Paranormal Guan Xiaoxuan has been neutralized.”
Xing Tianqing was the first to react. She immediately opened the golden book in her hands and shouted loudly to her teammates, “Guan Xiaoxuan has been infected! Save her quickly!”
Under certain special circumstances, anomalies can indeed infect humans. This is also called “parasitism,” a terrifying threat. If not treated in time, the teammate is basically lost.
Right now, black tentacles were sprouting all over Guan Xiaoxuan’s body. To everyone watching, it looked like she had been “infected” by that octopus woman. The enemy probably planted some kind of paranormal seed inside her. If they didn’t save her fast, she might die!
Just as everyone was about to rush forward, a car sped up from the foot of the mountain with its high beams on, blinding everyone.
“Don’t move!”
A group of people in black trench coats quickly got out of the car, all holding guns. Several other cars kept their high beams aimed directly at Guan Xiaoxuan.
“Uh… ha…!!”
Guan Xiaoxuan painfully grabbed the tentacle crawling out of her mouth and then yanked hard, throwing that disgusting thing down in front of her.
The black tentacle twitched twice, then completely stopped moving.
Her clothes on her back bulged out, and even some restless tentacles slithered out from under the hem, making it look like her legs had turned into these strange, eerie tentacles.
She weakly supported herself on the ground and looked up at the person who had just gotten out of the car.
The figure looked familiar, but because of the lighting, Guan Xiaoxuan couldn’t see clearly. Her foggy mind felt as if something was stirring inside, making her thoughts slow.
When the person came closer, Guan Xiaoxuan finally lifted her head and saw it was Xing Wenjun.
Xing Wenjun looked down at Guan Xiaoxuan sitting there helplessly. She reached into her pocket and took out something. Guan Xiaoxuan saw it looked like an ice cube—square and crystal clear.
“How pitiful,”
Xing Wenjun said with her eyebrows lowered, looking at the miserable Guan Xiaoxuan with fake pity in her voice. “I suspected your identity from the start. Turns out you really are a strange one.”
Then she raised her hand and tossed the ice cube above Guan Xiaoxuan.
In the next second, the ice cube suddenly grew bigger and formed an ice dome that covered Guan Xiaoxuan and her tentacles.
“Mom?!”
Xing Tianqing quickly ran over. She looked at Guan Xiaoxuan, then turned to Xing Wenjun and said anxiously, “Guan Xiaoxuan has been corrupted. You have to send her to the Weird Affairs Bureau for treatment, or something bad will happen!”
But Xing Wenjun glanced back at her and pointed at Guan Xiaoxuan. “Don’t you get it yet? This Guan Xiaoxuan is a strange one. She died months ago. She got close to you and joined the Strange Squad with bad intentions.”
“What?” Xing Tianqing frowned deeply and shouted, “Stop joking and save her!”
“Xing Tianqing, look carefully,” Xing Wenjun said to her daughter. “Don’t you see all these tentacles growing out of her body? If she was truly parasitized or corrupted, how could those tentacles be protecting her?”
“Mom, Guan Xiaoxuan isn’t a strange one. She’s a living person, and she’s my teammate!” Xing Tianqing opened the golden book in her hand and said to Xing Wenjun, “Let her go right now. If you don’t, don’t blame me for fighting back!”
Xing Wenjun sneered coldly and pressed her fingers down.
Suddenly, Guan Xiaoxuan felt something strike her head, but she had no strength to resist. She could only lie weakly on the ground.
Everyone saw three sharp ice shards drop from the ice dome, stabbing straight into Guan Xiaoxuan’s back!
At that moment, the previously chaotic tentacles reacted quickly. Some grabbed the ice shards, while others wrapped softly around Guan Xiaoxuan, protecting her.
Xing Tianqing’s eyes widened, stunned and speechless.
“See? If she were truly parasitized, how could these things protect her?” Xing Wenjun said to everyone present. “According to higher-ups’ investigation, Guan Xiaoxuan died in a drowning accident back in April. The one who came back from the morgue is nothing but a strange one.”
Xing Wenjun’s voice came from outside the ice dome. Guan Xiaoxuan struggled to open her eyes. She was so tired, feeling the cold creeping in, losing her warmth and consciousness.
She was not a strange one.
Guan Xiaoxuan tried to move her lips but couldn’t make a sound. She could only stare blankly at the mother and daughter not far away.
Xing Tianqing looked pale, even paler than usual. The hand holding the golden book trembled slightly, and her eyes were full of disbelief.
Meanwhile, Song Yi was still tangled up with the octopus woman and couldn’t break free for now.
Guan Xiaoxuan’s gaze met Xing Tianqing’s from afar. In her eyes was shock and disbelief, but she still firmly told her mother, “She’s not a strange one. Guan Xiaoxuan is just a normal person!”
Hearing this, Guan Xiaoxuan couldn’t help but curl her lips into a faint smile.
“I… am not a strange one…”
She used all her strength to look at Xing Wenjun and said, “When you investigated me before… you already checked thoroughly. I… am not a strange one…”
Xing Wenjun turned back and looked at Guan Xiaoxuan, whose upper body was wrapped in black tentacles, and sneered, “Guan Xiaoxuan, do you want to see what you look like now? You say you’re not strange, then what are these things on your body?”
Guan Xiaoxuan looked down at the things wrapped around her and frowned deeply.
“I… don’t know.”
She really didn’t know what they were, why they suddenly grew out of her body, or why they were protecting her.
With this appearance, even Guan Xiaoxuan herself didn’t sound convincing when she said she wasn’t strange.
Xing Wenjun looked coldly at her and paced over, pulling out a file from her pocket and slapping it onto the clear ice dome so Guan Xiaoxuan could see it clearly.
It was an investigation report.
The subject was Guan Xiaoxuan, but this report was different from the one Guan Xiaoxuan had secretly seen before.
“Did you think when you and that bus girl ghost snuck into my house, I didn’t notice anything?” Xing Wenjun said coldly, looking at Guan Xiaoxuan trapped inside. “I purposely let you see that report. We’ve had our eyes on you since day one when you joined the Weird Affairs Bureau.”
“Remember the day you joined and were asked to give a bl00d sample?” Xing Wenjun said with a hint of mockery, “If you really were a strange one, who would dare let you collect bl00d in the bureau?”
“Bl00d sample…?” Guan Xiaoxuan frowned. “Is there something wrong with my bl00d?”
“A dead person’s bl00d. Do you think there’s no problem with that?”
Guan Xiaoxuan was stunned and slowly closed her eyes.
Xing Wenjun looked at her and asked curiously, “Why don’t you argue anymore? You just said you weren’t strange. So how do you explain all this?”
Guan Xiaoxuan had no explanation.
She couldn’t say she wasn’t the real owner of this body or reveal anything about her past.
“Besides, you’re connected with many strange ones, and we know all about that,” Xing Wenjun said. “At this point, what else can you say to defend yourself?”
A dead person, with ties to strange ones, now looking like a mix between human and ghost — Guan Xiaoxuan knew no one would believe her words anymore.
But why did this happen?
She didn’t understand where she went wrong. Everything was fine until tonight.
She joined a national department, became a member of the Weird Affairs Bureau, had friends at school, and knew many strange ones in the Otherworld. Although she had been through a lot, she really liked this world.
It was unstable and dangerous, but Guan Xiaoxuan felt more and more comfortable living here.
She had so many colleagues and also…
She slowly lifted her head and looked at the pale Xing Tianqing standing there.
Disappointment, pain, and disbelief—all these emotions were magnified on Xing Tianqing’s face, which tore at Guan Xiaoxuan’s heart.
“I…” I never meant to lie to you.
Guan Xiaoxuan opened her mouth but firmly said, “I’m not strange. I never was.”
Xing Tianqing shivered all over and her expression changed instantly. She quickly stepped forward and shouted, “I believe Guan Xiaoxuan isn’t strange. Please release her! I will investigate this thoroughly!”
“Nonsense!”
Xing Wenjun glared at Xing Tianqing and shouted, “Guan Xiaoxuan is a strange one. It’s an undeniable fact. You don’t need to investigate anymore!”
“Mom!”
“Now it’s work hours. You should call me Director Xing!”
Xing Wenjun frowned deeply at her daughter’s aggressive stance. Her assistants quickly grabbed Xing Tianqing’s shoulders.
“What are you doing? Let go of me!”
“Captain Xing, this place is under headquarters’ command. You must obey Director Xing’s orders!”
“I don’t care! Guan Xiaoxuan said she’s not strange. Let me go!”
“Captain Xing, please calm down!”
Xing Wenjun’s face turned even darker with anger. She turned sharply and stared at Guan Xiaoxuan.
That look was full of venom, as if she wanted to tear Guan Xiaoxuan apart alive.
Why look at me like this?
Guan Xiaoxuan thought now Xing Wenjun was like a completely different person from the kind Aunt Xing she knew before.
Was that how she felt when she first approached me?
Guan Xiaoxuan couldn’t help but smile faintly. She looked at Xing Wenjun and said, “Director Xing, you’ve been hiding this from me all along, haven’t you? You probably want to kill me.”
“Exactly.”
Xing Wenjun looked at Guan Xiaoxuan like she was a bug about to die and said, “I hate you strange ones. Maintaining a friendly face in front of you for so long—it just makes me sick to think about it.”
Guan Xiaoxuan calmly looked at her and said nothing.
“Guan Xiaoxuan, actually, I kind of liked you,”
Xing Wenjun sighed slowly. “But it’s a pity…”
“Too bad you have to die tonight.”
Guan Xiaoxuan knew she had no way out once Xing Wenjun showed up. Tonight, she was doomed.
She looked again at the struggling Xing Tianqing and pulled at the corner of her mouth into a smile, slowly saying, “Xing Tianqing, I really am not strange…”
Bang—
A flower made of bl00d and flesh bloomed right in front of Xing Tianqing. She stood frozen, stunned, watching as the once pure ice shattered, and Guan Xiaoxuan was blown apart, her body a bloody, mangled mess.
Xing Wenjun then turned to Xing Tianqing and the entire paranormal squad, saying, “Paranormal Guan Xiaoxuan has been eliminated.”
