Episode 2: The Super Common Hero Summoning 1
――Let’s rewind a few days.
I was just a normal high school student in Japan, who happened to love reading light novels. My daily routine was simple: reading a light novel in the morning during my commute, continuing through break times, and even while eating lunch.
Then, during the last class of the day――
“Huh?”
Suddenly, the entire classroom was enveloped in a bright, white light. And before I knew it, in the blink of an eye, we were transported to an unfamiliar place.
Well, this was clearly one of those “otherworld transfers” you read about in light novels. But seriously, who would have ever thought it could happen in real life?
“Are you the heroes summoned from another world?”
A voice called out from the front, where a figure seated on a lavish throne was speaking to us with an air of superiority. Even someone like me, who devoured light novels constantly, couldn’t immediately grasp the situation. So, it’s no surprise that my classmates, many of whom probably never read such books, were even more confused. Just as I was thinking that, our strong-willed student council president stood up and spoke.
“Excuse me, where are we? Who exactly are you?”
“Oh, right! It was quite sudden, wasn’t it!”
The man on the throne, presumably the king, spoke. However, it seemed that the explanation would come from the silver-haired man standing beside him. The king casually gestured to the man with his chin.
The silver-haired man stepped forward and explained that, as we had guessed, we were indeed summoned to another world—this world. Apparently, it was something called a “Hero Summoning,” and we were brought here because summoned heroes naturally attract high-level professions, which is why the entire class was summoned at once.
“W-what are you talking about?!”
The one who stood up next was our math teacher, the only adult among us, and someone who seemed the most shaken by the situation.
“P-please send us back to Japan immediately! These kids still have families, and they’re just children!”
Yeah, that’s a fair argument. But in situations like these, things usually go like this――
“We are terribly sorry, but returning immediately is quite difficult.”
The silver-haired man said apologetically. But does that mean it might be possible to return with time? Could it really be that easy?
“So, what do we need to do to return to Japan?”
Some of the students, those who were familiar with light novels or games, were starting to regain their composure. By now, many were probably already predicting what would happen next and considering their options.
“We did not summon you here without reason. We called upon you to help us. This kingdom—Shriden—needs your aid.”
From there, the silver-haired man calmly began to explain the situation in the Kingdom of Shriden and what was expected of us.
Frankly, I didn’t care much about their problems. But the fact that this world had a “status” system and we could immediately check it was incredibly useful. If we had to go somewhere special just to view our statuses, it would make things a lot more complicated for us summoned heroes.
We were told to check our professions, and everyone started chanting “status” one after another to confirm theirs. While everyone was announcing their professions aloud, I silently examined not just my profession but every detail of my status.
(Luck 100? What’s up with that? Sure, maybe it’s lucky I got summoned to another world, but is this actually going to be useful for anything?)
As I pondered this, a commotion broke out at the front of the group.
“Oh! You truly are the Hero!”
It seemed the hero had been discovered.
I looked up and directed my gaze toward the source of the excitement—it was none other than the student council president who had first spoken up.
“May I ask your name?”
“K-Kaminuki Kōya.”
“Kaminuki Kōya, is it! …Indeed, you have the face of a true hero!”
Cheers rose from the knights standing around, and even the student council president seemed a bit flattered by the praise. Soon, the other students’ professions were revealed as well.
The vice president was a Sage, the kendo club member was a Sword Saint, and the track and field athlete was a Fist King. These professions were the most celebrated, with the Hero included. Apparently, these four were called “Special Classes,” marking them as extraordinary professions.
Aside from these, there were advanced, intermediate, and lower professions, and then the lowest, beginner professions.
It seemed that most of the other students had advanced professions, and even the lowest were intermediate, causing an uproar in the hall.
“Um, excuse me.”
Thinking that my own profession, Appraiser (Divine Eye), might also be something special, I raised my hand.
“Oh! We hadn’t heard from you yet. So, what is your profession?”
“Well, my profession is Appraiser. And after that, there’s—”
“A-Appraiser, you say?!”
…Huh? That’s… a surprising reaction.
The king gasped in shock. And after a few seconds of silence, the room suddenly erupted in laughter.
“…Um, what’s going on?”
While I stood there confused, the king raised his hand, and the laughter abruptly stopped. Then, the silver-haired man spoke instead of the king.
“Your profession, Appraiser, is… a beginner-level profession. One of the lowest ranks.”
He covered his mouth, trying to stifle his laughter.
It stung a bit. But I knew that once I explained the ‘Divine Eye’ part, their attitudes would change.
“Uh, actually, after the word Appraiser, there’s—”
“Ah, that’s enough. You don’t need to say anything more. Normally, a beginner profession wouldn’t even be present in this kind of setting.”
“No, but there’s more to it, there’s a bracket—”
“Someone! Remove him from here!”
“Wha—!? Okay, okay, I get it! I won’t say anything else! I’ll be quiet!”
With soldiers surrounding me and spears pointed in my direction, I couldn’t even explain the ‘Divine Eye’ part.
I could see my classmates whispering amongst themselves, and it was obvious they were talking badly about me. Well, if I were the only one with a beginner-level profession, I guess I couldn’t blame them.
At that moment, the disappointment of having expected something special from the Appraiser profession hit me hard.
