When we arrived at the barracks, we found a meeting already in progress with Vil-san and a group of high-ranking officials. As expected, while Alicia’s presence was understandable, I was a complete outsider. The others, except for Vil-san, couldn’t hide their surprise.

“He is my ally. He will be helping with the upcoming beast attack and assisting in the rescue of Captain Ryan and Ricott.”

Alicia’s explanation only deepened their confusion.

(I can understand why they wouldn’t accept me as an ally so easily. I mean, I probably just look like a kid to them.)

At first glance, the group seems to be relatively old. They are probably people of the same rank as the Captain or one rank below it. Naturally, they’d be skeptical of relying on some unknown person who just showed up out of nowhere.

“My lord, if I may ask, who exactly is this person?”

The one who immediately spoke up was a gruff, bearded soldier with a stern face.

“He is the child of an old friend of mine. I have requested his help because his abilities are essential for the rescue mission.”

“Are you saying you do not trust us to handle this?”

Uh-oh, things were starting to get tense. Weren’t these soldiers supposed to be on Alicia’s side?

“I trust you all. However, since we are heading into the Forest of Demons, we need to be as prepared as possible, don’t you agree?”

“That’s true, but—”

“Furthermore, this is a rescue mission, not a hunt. We must act quickly, so wasting time questioning his involvement is pointless.”

“Guh…”

Alicia was so cool! The bearded soldier was left speechless, his mouth forming a tight line.

“I also understand that, other than Vil, no one else has volunteered for the rescue mission. Is that correct?”

“Yes, I am the only one, Alicia-sama.”

Vil-san seemed to be the youngest among the group. The fact that he could stand tall among these older veterans showed just how capable he was. A quick Appraisal confirmed that Vil-san was level 25, with the same profession as Ryan-san: Silver Knight. The other soldiers didn’t even reach level 20, suggesting that level 20 might be the bare minimum required to venture into the Forest of Demons.

Seeing how under-leveled I was compared to them was a bit of a blow to my confidence. And it only made me wonder more about why Alicia’s level was as high as 20, higher than even some veteran soldiers.

“I see… Very well. Then the rest of you should prepare for the incoming beast attack. Vil, stay with me for further discussion.” 

“Understood.”

Vil-san saluted by pounding his chest, while the other soldiers gave a respectful nod and left the room.

(Hopefully, this isn’t a sign of division among the soldiers… That’d be bad.)

“Forgive me for showing you such an unpleasant scene.”.

“No, it’s fine. But… is everything really okay?”

“I wish I could say yes with confidence…”

It seemed like things weren’t entirely fine.

“However, we don’t have time to discuss our internal issues right now.”

“That’s true. Vil-san, I’m counting on you. I’m Mihiro Maki.”

“I am Vil Thomas… By the way, Maki-sama, are you an adventurer?”

Even though we’d met back at the manor, it was natural for him to be curious since no one had really explained who I was.

“No, I’m not an adventurer. I’m just here as a helper.”

“I see….”

“Though I can’t reveal Maki-san’s profession for certain reasons, his abilities will be essential in finding the Captain and Ricott-chan. That’s why I requested his assistance.”

Alice explained briefly to avoid any unnecessary suspicion. Vil-san seemed to grasp the urgency of the situation and didn’t press further. Instead, he extended his hand for a handshake.

“Captain Ryan is my benefactor. Please, let’s work together.”

“I’ll do my best to assist,” 

I said, shaking his hand firmly. Seeing that, Alicia clapped her hands and smiled. 

“Alright! Let’s start discussing the rescue mission! Given the situation, fewer people will be better, right?”

“That’s correct. Tohri and I will ensure Captain Ryan and Ricott are—”

“I’m coming too.” 

“…Huh? A-Alicia-sama, what did you just say?”

“I said I’m coming with you.”

“…Wh-Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat!?”

Yup, I knew it. His reaction is totally understandable.
