Upon closer inspection of the ground, I notice footprints that appear to be human, in addition to the large ones from the beast. If we follow these tracks, we should be able to catch up with Ricott-san and the others.

“…This way.”

“Huh? Wait, Maki-san!”

“Why aren’t we going straight?!”

However, I chose a route that veered off the main path. Going straight would let us catch up with them faster, but that would also mean encountering the Orc Lord first before regrouping with Ricott-san and the others. While it’s possible to think of it as a pincer attack, I’d prefer to meet up with them first, especially since I’m not sure of their current condition.

“We’ll circle around ahead of them, give them potions, and finish this in one swift strike.”

“Is that approach more likely to succeed?”

“Yes.” 

If we go straight, the success rate drops to 5%. By circling around, it stays at 10%, making this the best option. Still, there’s something bothering me from earlier when my display glitched. What could that have been?

“Maki-sama, let’s hurry!”

“Ah, sorry! Right, let’s go!”

There’s no point in dwelling on things I don’t understand. I instructed Vil-san on the path to take, and we quickly started running. Before long, we heard voices that weren’t ours.

“—Run, save yourself!”

We could hear Ricott-san and the others, but the Orc Lord’s voice was unmistakably there as well. We exchanged glances and picked up our speed. Finally, we caught up with them.

“Vil and… A-Alicia-sama?!”

The two of them were stunned by our sudden arrival.

“For now, drink these potions!”

Overwhelmed by our forceful presence, both of them took the potions Alicia handed them and drank them in one go. It seemed that Ryan-san had been injured. “I’ll use my ability to take down the Orc Lord. It may be hard to believe, but Alicia and Vil-san trust me, and we made it this far. So, Ricott-san, Ryan-san, will you—”

“I believe you!” 

I expected some hesitation, but Ricott-san declared her trust in me before I could even finish. That just left Ryan-san.

Surprised by Ryan-san’s quick decision, I immediately turned my attention to the approaching threat. It had finally shown itself.

“S-So, this is the Orc Lord!”

It was the first time I had seen a bipedal magical beast. And standing upright, it was over three meters tall, towering even higher than the King Bear we’d fought before. But unlike the King Bear, the Orc Lord wielded an enormous stone axe far too large for any human to handle.

“Can magical beasts use weapons?”

“High-level magical beasts sometimes develop greater intelligence. This is especially common with beasts that inhabit the Forest of Demons”

“This one… it was watching us flee earlier, looking amused!” 

Ryan-san’s longsword trembled with anger in his hand. After defending Granzawall for so many years and rising to the rank of captain, the humiliation of being toyed with must sting deeply. That’s why I’m determined to help him defeat the Orc Lord.

“Grooaah?”

“Hah, feeling scared now that our numbers have grown? You can still run if you want—”

“GROOOAAAAAAR!”

Ah, of course, it won’t be that easy. I didn’t really expect it to go that smoothly, though.

“Alright, here’s the plan—Ricott-san, Vil-san, Ryan-san! Hold the Orc Lord back without getting yourselves killed!”

“We’re going to get something that only Alicia, Glenn, and I know about! With it, we’ll definitely win!”  

It seemed like Alicia understood what I was getting at. She quickly turned to the others, raising her voice.

“Everyone, please trust us!”  

“”“Understood!”””

It makes more sense for them to listen to Alicia, being the lord and all, rather than me… but still, it stings a little!

“Tch! Le-let’s go, Alicia!”  

“Yes! Um… are you upset about something?”  

“I’m not upset! Let’s hurry!”
