Episode 49: The Super Common Hero Summoning 45
“—Hey! Are you okay?”
A voice called out from atop the outer wall of Granzawall.
We could see the soldiers on guard from our position, so we all waved back. Although the potion had healed our wounds, our clothes were tattered. So the soldier from a distance must have been quite worried.
As soon as the gate opened, we were led inside. Inside, a bearded, tough-looking soldier stood with a surprised expression.
“…W-What happened?”
“What do you mean, ‘what happened’? That’s a strange question. We just rescued Captain Ryan and Soldier Ricott and came back!”
“Y-Yeah, that’s true… right, I suppose that’s correct!”
As the tough-looking soldier with the beard tried to walk over to us, Ryan-san stepped in front of Alicia for some reason.
A tense atmosphere began to flow, and it was Ryan-san who spoke first.
“I believe it was you, Gimlet, who reported hearing the roar of a magical beast.”
“…That’s right. I’m really glad you’re okay, Captain!”
“Indeed… However, despite hearing the roar of a magical beast, there were no magical beasts approaching Granzawall. What do you have to say about that?”
“Is that true, Captain Ryan?”
Alicia sought confirmation of Ryan’s words.
Gimlet, the bearded soldier, was sweating profusely as he watched the exchange between the two.
“I can’t believe it, but Gimlet. You didn’t send false information in order to seize the Captain’s position, did you?”
“There’s no way I would do that! I definitely heard the roar of a magical beast!”
“I see. Then could you tell us what kind of roar it was?”
“Guh! T-That is…”
Seeing Gimlet hesitating there, it seemed that Ryan-san was indeed correct.
“By the way, is there anyone else besides Gimlet who heard the roar of a magical beast?”
At Ryan-san’s call, no one stepped forward.
I quietly asked Vil,-san, who had come to deliver a message to Alicia’s mansion.
“Who did you hear about the magical beasts from, Vil-san?”
“I’m sorry. I only heard it as a report. However, it was Gimlet who instructed me to tell Alicia-sama.”
Wow. This clearly seems like a setup.
It’s likely that Ryan-san approached the Forest of Demons to investigate the roar of the magical beast. But he found no sign of any magical beasts.
He could have turned back at that point, but perhaps he ventured deeper. And unfortunately, encountered the Orc Lord.
However, this choice leaves one question lingering.
“You may not know this. But normally, the roar of a magical beast doesn’t reach all the way to Granzawall.”
“N-No way! That can’t be! I definitely heard the roar of a magical beast—”
“Perhaps you heard it secondhand. However, when magical beasts actually approach from the Forest of Demons, they don’t roar. They simply draw closer, and it’s often only when you see them that you realize what’s happening.”
“…No way that’s true?”
“Gimlet, you’ve wasted your years. You always strut around within the safely fortified walls. That’s why you overlooked the truth happening on the ground.”
Upon hearing this, Gimlet dropped to his knees and hung his head.
I see, that explains why his level is low for his age.
“In that case, Captain Ryan, why did you go to scout the Forest of Demons even knowing it was a lie?”
When Alicia voiced the question I was also pondering, Ryan-san smiled and replied clearly.
“We can’t tell if it’s a lie or the truth unless we check it ourselves. The Forest of Demons can easily exceed our imaginations. Just like with the Orc Lord this time.”
When the name of the Orc Lord was mentioned, the nearby soldiers began to murmur among themselves.
“The Orc Lord is that dangerous of an opponent?”
“Being the king of the Orcs, it’s not something we could typically defeat on our own.”
Hmm, it seems I need to think about how to explain this to everyone.
I have to keep the fruits that temporarily boost abilities a secret. But we also had almost no chance of winning without them, so I couldn’t come up with an excuse.
Just then, someone stepped up next to Ryan-san.
“I helped with that. I’m an ‘advanced-class’ Quad Mage, you know.”
It seemed that Akigase-sensei had made a surprising improvisation, reading the room.
